All I can say on behalf of myself and my brother is thank you to you and your amazing staff for supporting us with our mums Wake on 26th November 2024. The staff are so warm, welcoming and happy to help in anyway they can. From booking through to the day communication was spot on. The food was incredible and everyone who attended had full plates and more, there was just a little left over and we were given boxes to take this home, much to the delight of my brother, cousin and friends 🧡 The Marquis of Granby is in a great location with great facilities, it offers fantastic quality food freshly prepared and amazing value, I would highly recommend coming here whether for food, drink or an event. Thank you for your kindness on our difficult day celebrating our precious mum 💗

Arrived at the pub....not greeted even though there were bar staff just standing around. Asked if they had a food menu to be told they are down there. Ask if they had a drinks menu, unenthusiasticly told no, asked if they did cocktails....response 'I don't know'. Was told after they dont...although a member of staff was drinking a pimms. Made us really feel like we had put them out. There was about 15-20 of us all sitting in the garden ordering drinks. At one point a member of the group heard a female member of staff say "urgh I was hoping to be home by 10 now there are 2 groups in the garden". As it got later it got dark but there are no lights in the garden all we had was light from a street lamp. We asked if they could turn on the small lights the had hanging in the garden to be told they don't work. My partner went to get another drink about half 9 10pm to be told, can you tell everyone out there were closing now. Bell for last orders was never rung and there was still lots of people inside drinking, but it seemed like they were all friends of the people who worked there. So dissapointed regarding the attitude of staff. We all spent a fair bit of money but was really made to feel that we were making their life hard. The garden has so much potential but has a few static beaches and a few benches you can move that are rotting. I sat down and a rusty screw fell out of the bench. Would not go back here in a rush.

This is such a lovely old pub building, in a good location with a convenient car park. It is a clear run on goal that they are choosing to miss. Things that they don't do include: Offer the menu that is on their website. Instead, you can get a restricted list of other inferior offerings. Take cash, however legal or against the oft stated wishes of the customers this may be. The only upside is how easy it is to get a table. This is because most people are already not going. Perhaps they have been before.

The menu on the website is not the menu in the pub. The refusal to take cash is inconvenient and disrespectful. The massive roadworks on the road outside were not their fault. The car park could be better laid out. The letterbox out the front is handy if you need to post a letter. The glove we lost in there never turned up. The NHS staff discount is kind though.

I was at the pub with my family last night at around 5:30 and the man behind the bar was very rude when taking our orders and was rudely spoken to us. I am not happy with this. I understand that everyone has their bad days but they shouldn’t take it out on the customers. You should leave your personal life at the door when coming into work. You should present all happy and bubbly. As I know working in the hospitality industry myself. I will not be returning back after this visit as I’m it happy about the way I was spoken to.

I experienced okay food, good friendly bar service and had a generally pleasing visit in what is a classic British pub where real cask ales are served and live sport is televised. There are also darts and a pool table in one corner. I had the chickpea, red pepper and hoisin burger with sweet chilli sauce, which in all honesty was very middle of the road. The fries were more or less the same in terms of overall quality but the dish itself was more than edible. It was the only main vegetarian option being served on their Sunday menu besides the small sharer plates starting from 2.99 GBP. It’s somewhere I’d visit again for sure but more for the sport and facilities, not necessarily their vegetarian burger offerings.

We booked in advance as we were ten people. On the day we ordered our meals, only to be informed after our starters and drinks arrived that chef wasn't available on that day, but someone would be cooking our meals. The only meal cooked was the person who ordered steak, which was overcooked. The rest of the meals appeared to have been bought in already pre prepared and served in earthenware type dishes. They had clearly been microwaved. One dish was still frozen in the middle. When we complained a lady explained that very sorry we have no cook. That was obvious. A man in a grubby apron (which didn't inspire confidence) appeared and apologised, once again explaining there wasn't a chef that day. We were quite annoyed as they had our phone number when we booked and could have advised us of this. The not so icing on the cake was the loud tv with sports on, we had to ask for it to be turned down. The one redeeming feature is that it had clearly been refurbished recently and was bright and airy.

We stopped off for Sunday roast last Sunday as saw roasts on the menu previously. On arrival, at the bar we checked if they were serving food as although there was a few people sitting, it wasn't obvious. We were told after sitting down they were only serving a limited menu due to the chef being on holiday! Obviously first question is well who's cooking then?! Most places would get a replacement chef or stop serving food. We were told what wasn't on the menu for that day and when we asked what roasts were on, we were told they weren't serving them either. Apparently the owner ' ex chef 'was cooking...We ordered two "pie , mash and seasonal vegetables" and a side of chips. We were told it would be 20mins which is understandable. Not sure what happened in 20mins but we were served pies with only half cooked chips, a small spoon of peas and several uncooked baton carrots. Carrots were still cold! We politely asked for the extra portion of chips to be taken away when they arrived with our meals and said we did ask for mash not chips. We received a £2 refund for the chipsWe won't be returning as quite frankly we were disappointed with the fact they had a limited menu and whoever was in the kitchen can't cook...Bring back the chef, every pub or restaurant should have one....right ?!

After previous awful experiences at this pub, decided with new owners and refurbishment to give it another go. On walking in the decor looks great, can’t fault that. The young lad behind the bar seemed hesitant to welcome us and made himself look busy. He then cane over and we ordered drinks. We asked for the menu as couldn’t see any on tables and he started to look behind the bar and said he couldn’t find them. A lady then appeared and said “ we only have a limited menu today as we have no chef he is getting married”! Basically it was sandwiches or jacket potato. I find it surprising that the bar staff hadn’t been informed of this, and I am sure it wasn’t a last minute wedding and they would have been able to get another chef in that could cook more than jacket potatoes?! Surely you don’t just have one chef that works every day so when they are off you can’t serve a full a menu. Don’t think I’ll bother coming back.

We wanted to try somewhere new for lunch and drove by the Granby and so stopped by and chose off the minimul menu we chose breaded mushrooms and calamari which was ok but nothing to write home about. Our main courses were steak and fish pie because their mussels were out od stock. This course took over an hour to be delivered by which time we were wondering whether or not to walk out, when it came the steak was overcooked and mushrooms were burnt and shrivelled with chips that were not peeled from their skin. We also ordered fish pie with seasonal veg with the veg coming died out and hardly any fish in the pie and more cheese than mash in the topping. I would not recommend this to anyone who wants a good meal.

Very reassuring that he fully understood about food intolerances, how the food would be prepared and that the menu could be adjusted to suit. He also explained that as the food would be freshly made it would take a little bit longer to serve. Completely acceptable! The food arrived nice and hot with plenty on the plates. Went for a lunch time meal. The cook was standing outside in the car park on the phone picking her nails(not really a good advertisement). We went inside and decided to order a meal. The pub is very worn and could do with some new decor and a lick of paint and maybe a good hoover! Ordered a sharing platter to start, this was ok although everything appeared to be deep fried including the chicken wings. My husband had sausage and mash, basic meal no onions just gravy but over priced at 8.99. I had fish and chips with peas(asked for no peas but arrive with them) . Not really my kind of chips , they fat and greasy and the fish was in batter , not crispy and was pretty tasteless . Again over priced at 10.99. The new manager was talking to some people on the table next to us, I couldn’t even hear myself think with his booming voice , praising himself about what a fantastic job he has made turning the pub around. Maybe the manager should more concerned about the over priced menu and the poor quality of food before promoting himself.

Very disappointing. Advertise as being family friendly, but lots of roudy swearing customers (who they seem very happy to accommodate),...

Since taking over earlier this year, Sam and her team have completely changed the atmosphere of the place. Historically it was a great family pub but went downhill in recent years. Sam has returned the family feel with good food at very good prices (including a discount for NHS staff), friendly atmosphere and great service. The bouncy castle helps to keep the kids entertained and today we went to support her event where there was a hog roast, pizza oven, Pimms tent and sweet stall alongside the bouncy castle and a rodeo bull to entertain the kids. I've never seen it so busy in recent times. Long may they continue.

We went here on Sunday afternoon to grab a light snack. Although we didn't realise the only option was a roast on a Sunday. We felt rude to walk away so we chose the roast. We both enjoyed our meals although a prewarning / a bigger sign to inform would be great.

The Granby has a separate restaurant and bar. The place is large enough to do this.Table service is provided, prices are around £9+ for mains and £4+ for starters. Fairly typical for pub restaurant food but not as cheap as Wetherspoons for comparison.Service was with a smile, politeness and is prompt.Food was hot, the plate was not. ! This could be a problem for some slow eaters. This was my *only* negative observation. Everything else was a positive.Yes, I'll return again. No problems. SteveBalstone

Evening meal on 11 April. Few diners as midweek but even so lots of tables in use. We had the home made pie (really excellent) and the salmon fillet (also excellent) both with lots of vegetables, which is nice in these days of side salads everywhere. Could only manage the one course each but we were impressed especially as the waitress apologised for running out of the lemon sauce and was it OK for chef to rustle up a white wine sauce so no problem. The Granby is closing for a 2 week refurbishment very soon so we will be back sometime in May.

A pub serving food of an OK standard. The bar area is traditional and small, opening up to a pub eating area. There is also a garden of sorts. It's by a busy road, lacks attention to detail, overlooks the car park and has little atmosphere. This place has seen better days.

Our neighbours visited recently and said how good it now is so we went today for lunch. It was busy, bright and cheerful. Lovely warm welcome by the staff. We ordered and the food and drinks followed quickly. My wife had mussels and I had gammon. Our server was delightful and the food was served very quickly. My gammon was excellent. A really decent piece of meat with crunchy chips and peas. My wife had a good sized bowl of mussels and frits with bread. Finger bowl of lemon water provided. The drinks were quick and the wine very acceptable. The place is being redecorated and a new carvery is being installed so the pub closes for three weeks to allow for the work. So glad the Granby is back. Well done to you.

Popped in here for dinner as it's quite local to us. Having read the recent reviews on here, we were expecting good things. We left after 1 drink and ate elsewhere. The entire place is badly in need of decoration... it looks really run down. It was quite empty, so not much of an atmosphere and felt the barmaid wasn't very friendly to be honest. Dread to think what this place was like before if most reviews are saying it's an improvement!? Honestly really wanted to like it as it's local to us but don't think we'll bother again... at least not any time soon.

Decided to take my boys out for lunch, was very disappointed to find that the lunchtime menu had changed and the only choice you have is sandwich or toastie (that's if you don't want a proper dinner) . The sandwich choice was good , however pricey because it didn't include chips or crisps likeIt used to. Service was quite slow and it wasn't particularly busy, we had to wait 45 minutes for 3 sandwiches. When the food did come it was very nice , but won't be going back in a hurry

First visit here on 30.01.17 it was a very busy time as they had a large party in. Food was served fairly quickly and was very enjoyable. Staff seemed polite and helpful. I was served by a young man who was only on his second day there. With that in mind and the pressure he was under from the large party he seemed to cope very well and was very polite. I imagine the bar area would get busy rather quickly as it is not that big. Worth a visit.

I was in Stevenage visiting family and we decided to go to the Granby for our Sunday lunch, what a cracking roast it was too and superb value for money. I understand that it is under new management and felt the new landlady was very pleasant and that she and her staff were very welcoming and pleasant and couldn't do enough to make our time there as enjoyable as possible. I would definitely visit again.

Under new management. Welcomed by the landlady who was very nice and friendly. There was a nice warm atmosphere and the food was amazing! My sister and I shared some Nachos for starters - very tasty and then I had the Gammon with 2 eggs, gorgeous chunky chips and peas. My sister had a chicken tikka massala which was served with a naan and a big poppadom. She loved it. I dipped a few chips in her sauce! As somebody who loves her sweets I looked at the Desserts menu. There were some wonderful choices on there but I was stuffed so didn't have one in the end. I also liked the fact that they have a separate childrens menu with one of the desserts as jelly. One of my daughters is not a fan of icecream so it was refreshing to see a childrens menu with something a little bit different to offer. I would definitely recommend this place.

After my last experience with food here before the new management I was wary as before the food was truly terrible. The restaurant was quiet with only one other table of diners but the atmosphere was warm and cosy the staff were welcoming and very helpful. The meal was especially tasty and well cooked. My sister had the Beef and Ale pie which; unlike in most pubs, was a full pie rather than a dish covered with pastry. I had the mixed grill which was all cooked to my taste and was a large meal very filling. Deserts were a little expensive but very tasty and complemented the evening. Everything was brilliant and I'm glad we gave it a chance with the new owners. We will definitely be coming back.

We go to the Old Forge every few weeks. It is the place we choose by default when we decide to eat out without planning. We like the place and the atmosphere and the children are not complaining of the food. The portions are generous and the prices are adequate. The only issue is that it can be crowded, on weekends there is a waiting queue for the roast meat. If you go on Saturday afternoon or Sunday it is better to make a reservation at least half a day in advance.

Such a shame Harvester is closing, but I’m very glad the team will be back when the place reopens as Miller & Carter. And what a brilliant team it is! Everyone welcomes us warmly and goes to great lengths to ensure we have an excellent visit. The food is always great and the service is spot on - not in your face but there’s always someone there when you need them. Really looking forward to being able to go back in May.

On arrival at my booking time, I waited for several minutes at Check-In. Then a lady staff member rushed by saying: "back in a sec". She never came back! After 5 more minutes, I walked into the table area to find a member of staff; he seated me. Jody was my server, she was most helpful (but couldn't explain the strange behaviour of her colleague). Good ending but a very unsatisfactory start.

We came to the Fisherman for a birthday celebration and our lunch was excellent. Our guest had been before but we hadn’t and Reanna went out of her way to look after us, giving us very good advice on our choices from the menu. We’ve already advised family and friends to book tables at the Fisherman and we look forward to our next visit.
