I went for birthday afternoon tea expecting a delicious tea. What did I get A luke warm cup of weak tea. Complained they brought a different blend Still luke warm if that was possible. As to the food very poor 4 finger sandwiches each which in fairness were average. Waited an hour and finally were offered scones. Not warm, cold, with indifferent jam and cream Then 3 cakes , also average and by this time we had to leave as only allocated 2 hours. Altogether a poor experience and not to repeat

We had the special "Chelsea Flower Show" afternoon tea on Wednesday. From the very first moment, the service was impeccable. We enjoyed every bit of the food. The initial complementary "mocktail" was delicious, as were the sandwiches and everything else. We had a fabulous vacation and honestly, this was the highlight of the trip!

For my birthday I was given a voucher for cocktails and bar snacks at The Goring. The voucher says “To book your experience please contact The Goring using the details below” and lists both an email address and a phone number. I sent an email requesting a reservation, but after a week no reply had been received, and still has not. So I called The Goring and had a very pleasant person take my call who told me that, despite the instructions on the voucher, it is not possible to make a reservation, but if we just show up the team will definitely be able to accommodate us. So, we turned up as instructed and were “greeted” by a woman at the desk at the entrance to the cocktail bar, who seemed very stressed. When asked if we could be accommodated, she was exceptionally rude and barked “as I already said, we don’t have any space and we don’t take reservations. You could come back in an hour but I doubt it will be better. We give priority to our residents anyway” She had not already said this to us, but it seems to another couple who had just left, to whom she was equally rude and brusque (they commented on it as we left). I have seldom been made to feel less welcome, especially at a 5 star hotel. I can understand that the bar was busy. I can understand that staff get stressed, although this is a part of their job. This could have been managed in a much more friendly, constructive and empathetic way, but she chose to be rude and aggressive. I am now in a sad situation of having been given a voucher for a birthday treat, but I have no desire at all to return to The Goring. If I did, what time would that be for them to have space for a non-resident? Why can I not reserve to use my birthday gift? Do I have to turn up day after day to be rudely turned away each time? Very disappointing.

We had a 1pm reservation for 5, for high tea. We were shown our table, then we were handed menus. We made our selections. We had warned the Goring in advance that there were 3 vegetarians in our group. We ordered 5 high teas. There is a limited but decent selection of teas. After we ordered we waited. And waited. No staff, at any point, came to check on us. There did not appear to be a manager in the bar. At five to two I asked one of the waiters to please check on our order in the kitchen. That seems to have done the trick, because we were finally served ten minutes later, one full hour since we had arrived. The food was okay, but in my opinion not worth the 65£ charged for the standard high tea. Desserts and scones were especially average in my opinion. At the end the staff apologized, but not even a symbolic discount was applied to our 405£ bill. We are not going back to the Goring and the search for the best high tea experience in London continues!

Located just around the corner from Buckingham Palace, The Goring has been serving tea for 100-odd years, and we’re pretty sure that the actual Queen pops in for a cuppa once in a while. The stately home vibe means that this afternoon tea is dead posh, This is also one of the most popular London afternoon tea services, so you’ll have to book a couple of months - yes, months - in advance for a table. The Christmas-themed afternoon tea is worth booking for the mini mince pies.

Today we had a beautiful afternoon tea at 1pm. We are about 20 minutes early and being one of the hottest days of the year we were melted by the time we got to the hotel. Which is only 5minutes walk from Victoria station. The gentleman on the door showed us to the bathroom for us to get freshened up. We were then asked if we would like a drink to start with and we're seated in the lovely bar area and had a gin and tonic which was lovely. The waitress then came to get us and let us know our table was ready and showed us to a lovel table in the corner. The room is lovely and bright and your not seated too close to the next table. The champagne is beautiful especially the rose bollinger and the sandwiches, scones, tea and pastries were beautiful. We were given three rounds of sandwiches and a top up on the pastries and scones. We were so full up the waiter was very sweet and packed up the rest in a goodie bag for us to take home. All the staff were so helpful and the service impeccable. Well done we will be back!

Having stayed several nights at the hotel in April and May, I enjoyed these rooms a lot. There are cozy corner chairs to enjoy your beverage, or you may select a terrace view or even sit on the terrace. It is a grand setting for Afternoon Tea. Lunch is lovely as well. It seems many locals set up meetings over a meal or drinks here- I observed this much more than it being used by long- stay hotel occupants like myself. This made it quite a busy place.

I have frequented many establishments in and outside of London for afternoon tea over the past 10 years. Unfortunately 'The Goring' afternoon tea has come out the worst for food, venue and service in my mental notebook. Let me explain why...Service - we were very early but got seated and told that we could order a drink. Unfortunately no one came to take our drinks order until 5 minutes before the afternoon tea was due to be served. I could see that other tables behind us were given a better service as they did get their drink orders taken when they arrived early. I think this upset me more...especially as 3 waitresses were standing by the service station laughing and joking (not busy) so could have come over and taken our order. Aside from this I would like to congratulate the front desk staff and doormen for making us feel extremely welcome upon arrival!Food - it was unfortunate that only finger sandwiches were on the menu. Other hotels tend to mix the plate with sandwich fingers, small brioche buns or they cut the sandwiches into triangles too. There was also inconsistencies with round 1 and 2 of the sandwiches. The scones were ok but I thought the cakes were quite bland and far too sweet. I will say that the fillings in the sandwiches were delicious and the Bollinger Champagne was worth every penny.Venue - in London you are competing with some amazing venues for afternoon tea like The Dorchester, The Savoy, Fortnum and Mason, Claridges, The Ritz etc. and it was a real shame that The Goring room for afternoon tea was very underwhelming. I also thought there would be some music playing - I understand that there isn't really room for a pianist but some background music would change the atmosphere a great deal.Taking all this into consideration I don't think I would choose to book afternoon tea at The Goring again.

My daughters and I had afternoon tea at The Goring on March 15, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. The ambiance of the lounge area was very nice and the hostess was very friendly. Our waiter, a tall young man with presumably a French accent, was initially very attentive. However, after the initial tea service, he disappeared for at least 45 minutes. We ran out of tea, we were given only two scones when there were three of us and our request for water was ignored. My daughter went to the bar after waiting for a half hour and was served by the bartender. When our waiter finally returned, he replenished our tea and food. He did not return to our table after the second service. The hostess presented the check, I paid and we left at 5:45. At 49 pounds per person plus a 12.5% service charge, I was reasonably expecting better service. I should have complained to the manager but I elected not to. The afternoon blend tea as well as the sandwiches, scones and desserts were all very good. This was my daughters first experience at a formal afternoon tea and they enjoyed it but the service was disappointing. Previously, I have had Afternoon Tea at The Langham Hotel London and it was excellent all around.

The tea which I had (English breakfast) was so weak you couldn't taste it. The cream for the scones did not taste or look like Devon clotted cream. My family told the staff that it was lovely as they didn't want to upset me however when we got home they admitted it wasn't great. We've been to all the top hotels in London for afternoon tea & this, we have unfortunately rated bottom of the list. Sorry Goring we will not be returning. Went for lunch this week, the menu was lovely, however the food did not come up to scratch. The starter of risotto was excellent, but the main - salt marsh lamb whilst cooked correctly, the vegetables were stone cold! We sent it back and waited and waited, to be fair they offered us a complimentary glass of champagne. When it did eventually arrive it was overcooked, albeit hot! They offered cheese and the Service, by and large was excellent. We shared a beautiful pudding, so not all was bad - Miguel - the two of them, were lovely. The smiles I have been used to over the years had been replaced by cold inefficiency by certain members of staff. How it has a michelin star, I am not sure - there are crystal obelisks on the table, no flowers - which is fine, as long as they are not chipped! the one on our table was.The atmosphere in the Restaurant is odd, there are too many tables, and I think the room would benefit from a central table with a floral arrangement or some such thing, because it needed to be slightly broken up, I spent my time looking at my neighbours feet, she had taken her shoes off! Needs a shake up I am afraid.

A few peanuts on the floor next to the chair should have been enough of a warning but warning bells definitely going off when our bottle of Rose wine arrived luke warm - never been near a fridge. The waitress seemed surprised when we pointed it out and went off to "get an ice bucket to chill it for you." Arrived back with a bucket of cold water (no sign of ice) and then told us we could wait for 10 mins while it chilled (!?). Well after the 10 mins it was still luke warm and she insisted on pouring it and seemed disappointed when we said still not happy. She went off and came back with another bottle which she assured us she had got from the restaurant fridge. It was cool but certainly not "chilled". At this point we just gave up and drank it. The maitre d arrived later with the bill and seemed disappointed when husband sought to knock off the service charge. For 36 pounds plus service it is not unreasonable to expect chilled wine and not to be fobbed off with amateurish service and then offered a free glass of champagne when they produce the bill. A lovely bar room but half empty on a Friday night and not vaux le voyage these days.

We went for impromptu drinks at the bar at the Goring yesterday evening. The space is lovely, all dark red and old gold with a recurring tongue-in-cheek sheep motif (above the door, on the ties worn by the charming staff). We started with two 175ml glasses (£13 each - you certainly pay for the location) of Gervasaillou Malagousia, then realised that if we wanted another glass each it was cheaper to drink the whole bottle (£44). Excellent olives, cheese straws and crisps were brought and topped up when finished. It was altogether civilised, but 'a place where every prospect pleases, and only man is vile' - very unfortunately, the staff were quite unable to deal with a noisy, drunk and boorish man, apparently staying at the hotel, who sat talking very loudly and consuming a whole bottle of port (before dinner!). The manager apologised to other customers when the man finally staggered off, threatening to go to Nobu, but I couldn't help feeling that generations of Gorings were spinning in their graves.

My friend and I made this our last stop of the day - a full day of trying elegant hotel bars! My husband and I had previously stayed at this hotel several years ago, enjoying the plush guest room, cream teas in the lounge, champagne in the bar, and dinner in the restaurant. I knew my friend would love it. We planted ourselves in the bar and ordered a bottle of their champagne. It was delicious...as was the little snacks they generously served with it. We giggled, took pictures, checked in on Facebook, drank our bubbly then toured around the garden. The biggest change I noticed was that they removed the statue of Mr. Goring from the lobby and put him in the far corner of the garden! We did not ask why. But all in all, this was the absolute best way of ending our day. My friend will definitely be taking her husband there. And I'll head back when I return to London!

Afternoon tea at The Goring is truly something to behold and savour. From start to finish the experience can only be described as impeccable ranging from the staff to the food to the decor. The hotels history is in itself a good enough reason to visit with it being the only London hotel to still be run by the family who founded it and when considering that it was founded in 1910, that is some achievement! With tea Served in a gilded lounge next to a roaring fire, with iconic lion and unicorn figurettes perched on the mantelpiece and a life-sized statue of Otto Richard Goring looming in the lobby, the setting reinforces this distinct sense of history.Arriving at The Goring Hotel on a quiet street in the luxe neighborhood of Belgravia, there's a sense of understated classic British luxury. Nothing is flashy. There are no gold-plated custom cars with Arab plates parked outside like at some London 5-star hotels. Just a few doormen smartly dressed in traditional top hats and tails warmly greeting guests at the door. This classy understated theme continues throughout. We chose the Bollinger afternoon tea - there is something about a glass of champagne that really adds to afternoon tea I think - and our impeccably dressed waitress poured us a cold and crisp flute of champagne from an impressive looking magnum of Bollinger. Before our sandwiches and cakes arrived, we were given a small glass of cold pea mousse with a piece of smoked salmon which was sweet yet refreshing and was a perfect palate cleanser. The sandwiches and cakes were presented on a 3-tier gold and yellow china cake stand which matched our cups and side plates and it was adorned with a selection of sandwiches, scones and an assortment of cakes on the top tier. The first enjoyment came from the sandwiches on the lower tier consisting of the Coronation Chicken, Beef and Horseradish, Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese and Ham and Mustard Sandwiches, which of course came traditionally crustless. The Scones had a golden glaze to them and there were two choices of plain and currant with toppings of Clotted Cream and homemade Strawberry and Raspberry Jams, which were all delicious. There was a selection of four cakes and a miniature trifle on the top tier and we began with the Hazelnut Choux which was rich yet delicate with the nuts really coming through. The Creme Fraiche and Strawberry Tart was encased in a buttery, almost shortbread like pastry that was surprisingly light. The Chocolate Mousse with Passion Fruit was surprising as it looked like it could be very sickly but the fruitiness hidden inside really balanced out the rich chocolate. The Sherry Trifle was quite a standard dish but it was done well and the Macaroon I think had to be one of my favourites with the flavours of raspberry and pistachio complimenting each other perfectly. For our tea, we chose the Jasmine pearls and the Goring Afternoon Blend and was very refreshing, with us managing to drink two pots of it during our visit! Despite being able to have as many sandwiches and cakes as you liked for afternoon tea, we only had the one cake stand and two sandwich plates of which we struggled to finish!Overall it was a fantastic experience and certainly very good value for money! Without a doubt we will look forward to frequenting The Goring in the near future.

We were looking for a place for a Sunday lunch to mark a special occasion and took advantage of The Goring's Sunday Lunch 3 course offer. We were made to feel welcome from the outset. While the restaurant does not have the cosy warmth of the bar/lounge area the ambience is pleasant. There was plenty of choice in the 3 course menu to suit all tastes. After different starters our party all chose the roast beef as the main dish. We like our beef rare and it was gratifying that, unlike so many places where the Sunday roast joined is overcooked, a joint was brought to the table from which rare cuts could be selected. Portions were good and we asked for and were given some additional slices of meat. The desert course again offered plenty of tasty choices. The cheese board comprised exclusively of English cheeses and offered a welcome opportunity to sample some that were unfamiliar. The wine list is comprehensive and caters predominantly for those with ample means. That said, there are some more modestly priced products that are entirely satisfactory. The service was attentive without being obtrusive. All in all, it was a great choice for that special occasion where you can comfortably push the boat out without a risk of falling overboard! We will return!

The staff are extremely attentive, helpful and go above and beyond to ensure that you are enjoying your stay. The food and quality of mixed drinks (we asked the bar tender to surprise us with whatever he wanted - we weren't disappointed by his creativity) were exceptional.I would highly recommend this hidden gem in the city.

The room is superb, and so is the service: perfect and charming. The hotel has a lot of personality. But we do agree with some others here that the scones and the pastries are simply not as good as the ones in Brown's to name immediately the best. But in atmosphere the Goring might be the winner.

I've been to many afternoon teas and had booked the Goring as a treat for my mums birthday. Welcome upon arrival was great, very friendly and welcoming... following that the experience was decidedly substandard. The food for tea was really not up to scratch compared to other 5* hotels, who offers their guests cauliflower and curry sandwiches!!! The rest of the sandwiches were really underwhelming- plain cheese, coronation chicken and beef- all of which were tasteless, so much so that we had to complain and request someAlternative sandwiches. Scones were cold and the pastries were just about fine. Service during tea, again not up to 5* standards, we had to refill our own tea and champagne throughout much of the afternoon (1st world problems yes I know!) however, when you go for tea you expect a certain level of service. When the waiter asked me how the tea was I responded with "fine", he then said "just fine" to which I replied yes, however didn't care to clarify why I hadn't given it more glowing praise. Afternoon tea in a London hotel is an expensive experience and I think you can get far better tea experience than this e.g. Browns, claridges and cowarth park are amazing. It was actually a disappointing experience upon reflection.

For the last 15 years we have made it a family tradition to have a special afternoon tea as a celebration of our eldest daughters Birthday which falls on Christmas eve. We have therefore enjoyed building up comparables of other lovely London venues, the Ritz, Browns, Claridges,The Savoy for example and this is all part of the fun. We had to wait 4 years to be able to successfully book the Afternoon Tea at the Goring. Perhaps due to the wait I had high unrealistic expectations. I had to pay the full amount in advance including service charge for 5 people no other venue demanded this at the time of the original booking several months ago. Not very trusting start. The surroundings of the bar and Lounge were fine and of high quality and comfortable The service was good with polite waiters. The tea and the cakes were average in flavour. However there was something lacking in atmosphere it was not very Christmasy or particularly cheerful. There was no piano player for example. There was no dress code so at the end of the meal two men very casually dressed sat down adjacent to us as it was used as a bar area also. The men looked as though they had just returned from a building site. We were dressed smartly for the occasion and it now felt uncomfortable. May be I am over sensitive but it felt it was wrong. Casual bar drinking and expensive afternoon Tea experiences should not be mixed. The Ritz have got this right and there is a dress code which works well. I think the management should think about this issue. We all agreed that the experience was very average for the amount paid.

Our first experience of tea for two at the Goring and not disappointed! As you would expect the greeting and service is excellent. Depending on the package you have paid for (or have been given in our case) you get a glass of champagne to start with, There is then a wide variety of teas to choose from which are refreshed when they become cold. A range of sandwiches is provided and again these can be replenished if required. To finish there are the splendid cakes!! All in all excellent.

I visited The Goring for Christmas Afternoon Tea yesterday. The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas, with a lovely open fire and striking real tree in reception. The perfect way to get you feeling festive. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We also had a cocktail prior to the Afternoon Tea, which was very well presented and tasted great. We appreciated that we were able to sit at our table straight away despite being nearly an hour early. This demonstrates a very good service. At the beginning of our visit we advised staff that we did not like Salmon. The first set of sandwiches came with a salmon replacement; however when we asked for some further sandwiches, they included salmon. This is the only thing that has stopped me rating the experienice as 5 star but other than that the afternoon was faultless. We felt very comfortable in the surroundings and I look forward to coming back to try a meal in The Dining Room!

I took my friend in for a drink and a bar meal on Monday , first of all I have to say that this is my 20 th visit to the Goring over the last 3 years From staying overnight for dinner in the restaurant and many happy bar meals and drinks in the garden over the years , this was not a pleasant experience there's always reserves on the tables they don't allow non-residents to book a table in the bar they always try and accommodate you however we wanted a particular table which had a reserve on it we went in at 4:40 nobody came to sit on that table until after 6 o'clockThe lobster omelette as usual was superb choice of wine was lovely. However it is very hit and miss on service and what staff you are going to encounter some of them treat you as if you're the dirt on the bottom of their feet and some of them treat you like royalty .If you don't want non-residents in the bar then don't serve them if you do !! treat them with the respect that they deserve I have been to the Goring on many occasions and bring a lot of guests and spend an awful lot of money and would hate to think we are not welcome .My guest enjoyed the evening and thought the hotel was amazing she does not live in London but in a small market town with very little choice of hotels there are a lot of good hotels in London which you can go for all meals and drinks come on Goring treat non-residence and residence with the sameRespect .

I dropped in here twice recently for a pre-lunch drink. I chose the champagne cocktail. It came with nice nibbles (refreshed when I had eaten the first lot). Kind service. Very pleasant atmosphere - but get there early because the bar fills up fast, or make sure yu reserve a table. In my opinion, you should avoid the martini cocktails: too watery and nowhere near cold enough. The champagne is fine.

Stopped here was going to have dinner but decided to eat elsewhere. Such a shame what a stunning venue. Nice bar lounge area really nice decor. The main waiter fella was walking around with a look he thought he owned the place. When I asked for a drink in the lounge he acted like he was put out! Not one smile! Shame as it was a atmosphere prior to that, and at £80 for 4 gin and tonics and 2 bottle beers I'd expect the staff to be professional and act like they are pleased to see me. I actually thought of giving him my opinion, but thought I didn't want to spoil the evening.

A big blip in making our afternoon tea booking by the lady in charge. If not for the deputy manager, Mr. Gabor, our afternoon would have been ruined. He more than made up for the oversight and rudeness of this staff member. We ended up having a great afternoon tea. The sandwiches were delicious as well as all the little cakes. The scones could have been better - was a little dry. The waiters and waitresses were exceptionally polite and pleasant. Love the old, quintessentially English setting of the yellow terrace where we had our afternoon tea. Would go back for tea again and also try lunch and dinner there. Maryann S.
