45 minutes for a hamburger and a fish seems absurd to me, having paid before we felt hostage of this place, don't go there unless you have time and patience to waste...

Ordered a shandy and she accidentally poured soda instead of lemonade but even after drinking half the drink and thinking 'this doesn't taste right' I confirmed with my table and they agreed it was soda! We took it to the bar and they replaced it with a full shandy and just had abit of a laugh about the mistake. Was lovely service and lovely that they replaced it no questions. Very lovely pub with a nice atmosphere and location

A great little pub, with a great atmosphere. Service is very good until it comes to the food. It's not until the order arrives do they tell you the main you ordered is not available, so you are presented with just chips and a salad. Then, when you ask for a steak sandwich as an alternative cooked medium rare they give you one that's been cremated. Disappointing.

While the waiter was very nice, sadly the service from the kitchen was incredibly slow. It took an hour to have fries and a roast sirloin lunch delivered. Worst yet, the roast dinner, the Yorkshire pudding, meat and cauliflower were ‘fridge’ cold, literally had just come out of the fridge with zero attempt to heat the items. Really not sure what happened here, if a chef was away. Thankfully they refunded this meal, I’m not one to ever complain as so many of my friends and family own restaurants, but food coming straight from the fridge just isn’t acceptable :( and the wait time for food is also just way too long.

Had a table booked for food we arrived the bar staff completely uninterested in serving us or communicating. We found our table no one came to ask us if we wanted drinks or food. When we went downstairs to order we were told bluntly that there would be a 30 min delay on any food we ordered. The pub was not busy and looked like no one else was eating. We decided to leave and go elsewhere. Felt like they didn’t care or want to do the job.

I actually love this pub. The beer is well kept and the food is solid. It’s tiny, rather beautiful and has the potential to be a something of a jewel. But it’s badly let down by repeatedly sullen and miserable bar staff. I go here fairly often and the manager is generally pleasant but other than that, it’s really not good enough. Usually there’s a totally wordless transaction: I make an order, it’s served in dead silence, then I pay. I feel truly blessed if I’m deemed worthy of a word of pleasantry or even a vague smile. If you interact, you might occasionally receive some monosyllabic reply, again with no smile or flicker of charm. Ultimately, this is a pub: and it’s in desperate need of people who understand what a pub should be instead of assuming you can treat customers as if they’re short of money for a pack of loo rolls in Lidl. In addition, there is hot competition nearby in the form of two Red Lions not a hundred yards away - the very welcoming and charming one on Crown Passage and the picture book one on Duke of York Street. Again, this could be a real gem of a pub and I really hope it’s able to pull its socks up and fulfil its potential soon.

We had an utterly disappointing experience at this pub. We were overcharged at the counter and arrived late at the theatre due to the incompetency of the staff. At the bar, the staff member repeated our order, yet they managed to bring us the wrong food items. When questioning, the waiter responded "this was on the order". Eventually, she brought us the correct item and advised, the manager would refund the difference. When we departed and asked if the difference was refunded to the card, the waiter said "no" but she would ask the manager. The manager was nowhere to be found. We waited nearly 10 minutes for the staff member trying to find our order and figure out how to reverse the transaction. She never managed. At the end, we left and were 7 minutes late from the theatre, thus we had to watch the first act from the back of the stalls standing.

Great pub, scotch egg is 10/10. But I believe there is a mistake in the menu. Should definitely be Napoleon III, not II! Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Paris and, like other members of his family, was exiled from France after the Battle of Waterloo (1815). He spent the years that followed in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, America and London, where he resided briefly at 1 Carlton Gardens – also in St James’s.

I was doing a self-guided walking tour of London and it mentioned this pub as a stopping point for a restorative libation. Having walked along a street where the parked cars were a Bentley, Rolls Royce, Porsche and a Maserati, I was expecting more than "London Prices". So, I was pleasantly surprised to find Steak & Ale Pie for £14.75! In fact, the entire menu was remarkably well-priced. When the food arrived, I was blown away by the portion size. It tasted great so I can wholeheartedly recommend this pub. It's a bonus that it was also the hang out of Oscar Wilde and Lilly Langtry. Oh, yeah, it also has "Neck Oil" o tap (if you know what that is).

Whoever was working the shift just night was the most sullen, miserable bar person I've encountered in quite a while, which was obvious from the first 5 seconds. Also overheard a woman expressing surprise she came out of the ladies toilet, she found herself in the dark upstairs. Come on, this stuff isn't hard: smile, say 'hello, what can I get you?' and don't make customers feel like an irritating inconvenience. Decent customer service makes a huge difference; the opposite puts people off coming again, especially in an area not short of excellent pubs.

One word: disaster. I booked for business lunch for 14 people a week in advance. Got an email saying someone will contact me within 24hours. No one did. I tried calling them and only was told to send an email, which I did. Again, no reply. We tried calling again, left messages saying we were coming, but nothing. However, the link from the very first email was "live", saying "we are looking forward to seeing you". So, we turned up and guess what? They didn't have our reservation, but we showed them the email. The pub was half empty and instead of swiftly pulling a few tables together, they were trying to figure out what happened to the reservation. After 15 mins of this we were fed up and left, had to do a business take away instead as impossible to find place for 14 people right at the spot. VERY DISAPPOINTING! PS: I got a link to review my visit... and the link in the email is not working! Can they do anything right?!

A delightful and unusual little pub in the hallowed surroundings of St. James’s. Used to be the watering hole for the next door St. James’s Theatre where Oscar Wilde premiered a couple of his most famous plays. Shamelessly demolished by a property developer in 1957, the spirit of the the theatre remains in the top bar of the pub which is known as the Theatre Bar. Tiny and very Edwardian, the pub continues to thrive: now a Greene King house which sterilises things a bit but it’s still delightful with good beers, solid food and a nice atmosphere is sometimes a tad cold in terms of heating. Nice traditional fixtures and fittings and very popular post work. The staff can be a mix - some are pleasant and one smartly dressed chap in waistcoat and tie is always efficient and friendly. Others can be a bit off hand, bordering on the rude - I’m not sure they mean to be but it’s just an attitude that doesn’t work in the hospitality trade. Overall though, really worth a visit and especially as part of a pub crawl in this area that boasts a number of lovely pubs including three “Lions” within a 200 yard walking distance (two Reds and a Golden!)

She then disappeared for 10-+minutes so I couldn’t order another drink with my meal and a bunch of people ended up waiting at the bar for someone to appear to serve! Just goes to show majority of people are honest as nobody helped themselves! Table next to me was a family who ordered nothing the whole 40 mins I was there, just used the free WiFi and toilets completely seemingly unnoticed by the woman behind the bar 🤷‍♀️ I’m not a tourist but clearly this is just for tourists???

This is a nice little pub quite near where I stay over in London. Had had a drink here but never dined here before but saw an update on Google maps and the website that said kitchen was now open until 10pm on weekdays. When I arrived at 8.45 I was told the kitchen had taken last ordered. As soon as I showed the evidence the young man behind the bar profusely apologised and phoned the chef to explain and ask him to stay on, which he did especially for me. As of writing this review the later kitchen opening times are still live but staff hadn't known anything about it on Monday earlier this week. I ordered one of the specials on the board, the chicken pie. It was enormous, well cooked and very tasty. An extremely generous portion for a London pub and the chips were tasty too. The carrots in the accompanying sauce could have been softer but it was a late night pub meal to no complaints. Unfortunately didn't get the name of the young man behind the bar but he was definately a asset to the place, very friendly, ineffably polite. Downstairs is very compact, as you'd expect for such a place tucked in the middle of St James but the theatre bar upstairs is a lovely place to grab a pub meal, plenty of space, comfortable seating and on a very hot day very comfortable due to the AC running. Will certainly come back again once I've doubled checked the kitchen opening times because the food was tasty, great value for central London and generous portions.

Waited 30 mins for 1 taco from DF tacos. Maybe should have said 2 large takeaway orders before me when I placed mine. Otherwise, whole environment is great.

Great food and drink. Good atmosphere, suitable for business and family meets, lots of space, able to book out reserved areas
