Lovely pub serving excellent food with a good choice on the menu. Glad we booked in advance as the pub was busy with a good vibe later in the evening with a band playing. They weren’t in a hurry for our table back and at no point did they ask, we could have sat there longer but, and it is a very small but, the service was very quick, not really allowing enough time between courses. The food however was excellent and I am happy to recommend.

We had dinner here three nights in a row. Superb service, lovely staff and good food! They also made a huge fuss over the dog. We would highly recommend.

I have been coming here for 40 years and it remains a fantastic pub, with excellent food and really, really friendly staff and service. They looked after my dogs - treats, affection and kindness every time we visited. Food has been excellent - though my wife didn’t like the bean burger - it was refunded without hesitation. Just brilliant. Sadly will be off home today - but I’d like to thank the staff for being great!

Nice sprawling pub motel feel. Rooms well fitted out but a tad small. Breakfast was 10 out of 10 Drinks horrendously overpriced, I was gobsmacked. Good was fairly good , but just over portioned and again expensive. Less is more. Great location, just not your local country pub. All the staff were spot on and very attentive.

Have had the pleasure of eating here many times and each time has been fantastic . This is a cosy place , has a great atmosphere and the best friendly , helpful staff . They really all go out of their way to make your evening a first class one . The food is always exceptional . This time we had the chicken , smoked bacon , leek and mushroom pie with creamy garlic potatoes and a medley of veg . It was absolute perfection , beautifully cooked , presented and very tasty . I would totally recommend a visit here . We will be back soon . Thanks all.

Had a lovely family meal last night and everyone was pleased with their meal, steak, pie of the day, lasagne and fish and chips - all top quality. Great service, super friendly staff that went out of their way to even welcome our dog. What's not to love!

Stopper here for lunch twice this week, great service and exceptional food, pie, burger and fish and chips all very tasty and good portions without being silly. Nice to see some local beers on tap. Great outside space, including nice undercover area with heaters for the chillier days. Very dog friendly, Cooper loved his ‘Sir Woofingtons’ treats

Best meal and dining experience in a long time. Every staff member we engaged with was great, polite, pleasant and helpful. Partner had sea bass which was 1st class. I had steak with mushroom, lovely salad and pepper sauce. Cooked to perfection. Booked again for Friday as so good. .

Sunday dinner is stunning, topped off with some crunchy veg!

Went for a solo pint. Acused of being a nuisance. Stopped into this pub after the main place (the llwyn) only to be greeted with hostility. I would avoid if I was you.

We are locals. So spent a Saturday night dining out in The Golden Lion with friends. Food was delicious. Service was friendly. (The only Little Niggle I have is, that Alot of the menu meals did contain Chilli,which we cannot eat)which really condensed the menu down for our choices......

This is a beautiful place to stay and eat, had a two night stay with breakfast and evening meal on both nights Beautiful rooms, gorgeous food, and really helpful, friendly staff.

Just wanted to make sure everyone knew that I had my worst ever fish n chips there last September.. fish was not beer battered but some kind of tempura batter and the fish still had its skin on! Almost made me gag but had to get it down me and move on cos I needed the sustenance ans was far too tired to complain and make a fuss.. was doing the Pembrokeshire way.. chips were seriously average too, and the price wow like 20 quid! Uff

We are in a Sunday lunch club. First time at the restaurant and very impressive meal and service. Food, sunday dinner was simply outstanding, deserts a little pricey, but very nice. The staff from the meet and greet to the table service and paying the bill were happy, smiley and generally very curious. Thank you so much. Top job everyone. 💪👏💪

Stayed at the Golden Lion the 10th & 11th Jan with one of their specials B&B and evening meal on both nights and a bottle of wine on one night for £250 + £20 for our dog great value. Lovely warm Room and stunning food both breakfast and evening meals. All staff are lovely accommodating friendly and the service is next to none . Plenty free parking and walks for our dog Cariad even a treat box for the dog left in the room for her. We enjoyed it so much we have booked this deal again the end of Feb as its only available till mid March. We'll thank you amd well done Golden Lion see you next month

Nice hotel right on the Coastal Path. Very fine food, both dinner and breakfast. Spacious rooms. Nice staff.

On holiday in Newport we dropped in on the off chance for Sunday lunch. Although fully booked, they fitted us in and served a very tasty lunch quickly and efficiently. We ate at The Golden Lion every evening during the week. We enjoyed good food and service in a dog friendly pub. Catch of the day is particularly recommended.

Cracking hotel, clean and well appointed rooms, lovely food, great atmosphere. Plenty of parking, friendly helpful staff and very dog friendly.

Visit Newport/Dinas every year and have been coming for over 40’years.. Golden Lion is great for dinner and lunches.. this time we had a brilliant lunch, great food and beers. Quality kids menu also.. Highly recommend..

We went here for Sunday lunch. We could not fault it. We regularly go out hunting for great Sunday roasts with a group of friends and this is up there with one of the best we've been to. A solid 9/10, the food was excellent and good value for money.. it was £20 but the quality and portion size easily justified the price. The service was excellent and the staff were friendly and welcoming, we were never left feeling abandoned or unattended.. the decor and atmosphere was also excellent.. the bar area was dimmer lit, cosy and warm feeling. The restaurant was brighter and lighter due to a large glass extension yet still felt homely and cosy due to all the wooden beams and floor.. would highly recommend and will hopefully get a chance to re visit again.

From the time we arrived to the time we left the staff were absolutely brilliant!! So warm welcoming & friendly. The food was first class. We had evening meals both nights of our stay.& Breakfast was lovely too. (Perfect poached eggs) The rooms are lovely and clean. Thank you to all the team.

Go there a lot for food when we visit. Food is great. Dog friendly. Can highly recommend the GL beef burger. Local beers on tap. Only disappoint was we usually have the Focaccia bread with olives. Had it tonight, but there were no olives☹️

We had a wonderful meal and experience here. The staff were very attentive and accommodating. The menu is not typical pub food, the options were varied and the food was great and not overly expensive for what you get. The dining room back of the bar is modern and well appointed. There is limited parking across the road.

Review for dinner only. We visited on the basis of recommendations from a visitors book and while pleasant we were underwhelmed for the price (£100 for 2 adults and 1 child having main and dessert only). Childrens fish and chips was very good. Sea bass was tasty but on the small side and would have benefited from some vegetables as came with potato but little else. Great to have more than one vegan main. However while Fragrant Thai green vegetable curry tasted ok, could have been a little spicier and no authentic Thai curry would include courgette or garden peas! Felt as though whatever vegetables were to hand had been used. Desserts ok. Some confusion over whether sorbet was available or not, but it was. Staff were friendly and it is a pleasant building but has very limited parking. Overall we probably wouldn't go back as felt it too pricy for what it was.

This is a lovely pub. Very atmospheric, delicious food and very friendly staff. I had the curry which was great! Definitely recommend.

Went here for an evening meal, lots of choices on the menus, and very generous portions.

Astounded at the quality of the cooking. Wasn't expecting this level of cuisine at such a small sleepy town. I went for the 'Day's Catch' A pan fried hake on a bed of tarragon and parsley sauce with sauted leeks and peas. Sounded too good to be true. Well, totally exceeded my expectations. The hake, which can be tricky to get right, was cooked to perfection, moist and tender, full of flavour (rare for hake which can be bland). The sauce was so well executed and complemented perfectly the fish. I was eating alone and in this situation I usually bring a book as a 'crutch'. Well, I just couldn't read or look at my phone or anything other than give the dish my full attention! It really stopped me on my tracks. To top it all, the restaurant is very well staffed and service us prompt and efficient. Top marks

Highly recommended. Great staff...every single one of them. Great food...we ate dinner and breakfast...both really good. 2 great evenings in the bar. Live music last night was fab.

We had a last minute overnight stay after a very soggy day walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Beautifully clean room with everything you need, delicious dinner and breakfast and really friendly and welcoming staff. The perfect stop over for us!

We mistakenly booked the wrong date for our party of 11. We were mortified but the staff were amazing and managed to squeeze us in despite it being very busy. Food was amazing 🤩 Lovely atmosphere, superb food and very accommodating staff ⭐️

We had a lovely meal here this evening, service was quick and the food was delicious. Very dog friendly, lots of treats available for the dogs. It was cold and wet outside but we were nice and toasty sat in the Shed. Highly recommend!

A nice, quiet room, the restaurant is bright and comfortably furnished, the staff was very attentive, but didn't seem intrusive. Breakfast and dinner were convincing.

Great Ceasar salad. Was super tasty but unfortunately I was feeling a little poorly, and although I thought I was hungry, I couldn’t finish my plate. Which was a shame because it was one of the best chicken salads I’ve tasted lately.

The food and service at The Golden Lion were excellent. A vegetarian, I thoroughly enjoyed the lentil cottage pie; my husband’s lamb chops were delicious as was my sister’s chicken pie. The staff came by frequently to check that all was well. We sat in the covered garden area and were pleasantly warm even on a cold night. I highly recommend The Golden Lion.

Simply amazing. The most delicious sea bass we have ever had, beautifully presented in a stunning outdoor area. Staff couldn’t do more . Very impressed. We will return.

Lovely wee hotel. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Had a lovely meal out on the patio. The rooms were nice and spacious and clean. Hotel has a nice lively bar with local beers. Good value for money and I would definitely stay again if I was in West Wales.

Been coming for a few years. We had a great Sunday lunch at Easter but today ( Sunday) we were all disappointed. The meal was not hot, the roast potatoes seemed to have been pre cooked ( it was 12 midday) and the meat tasteless. We ate it and paid and the new staff were pleasant and attentive. Will we come back -- not so sure.

Having read the previous reviews I was expecting better. Food came quickly but was average pub grub and underwhelming. I had the pie and found it very bland and the greens were uninspiring. It all felt a bit mass produced. Staff were all lovely though and very helpful. Also very dog friendly.

Great meal and excellent service. Quality food. Good atmosphere. Staff attentive and polite. We were lucky to get a table as it was a full house. Always a good indicator of a successful establishment. I can't rate the rooms as not a guest.

Only came for the food and drink, but these did not disappoint. All of the family enjoyed their meals, and all 3 meals were served at an incredibly impressive speed for a pub (<10 mins). Menu seems to have good variety too. Would come here again if I lived closer. Make sure to book, as it gets busy! Images show the GL burger (with modifications) and haddock.

I was waiting 20 minutes in front of the bar to order. The guy from there came twice and ignored me. I suppose I wasn't looking like a desired customer as I was wearing a company branded T-shirt. I will never come back...

On the edge of Newport, this is a friendly pub with parking opposite. Food excellent and great to see it dog friendly. Steak is amazing.

If looking for a place to eat in Newport, this never disappoints! Convenient, good food, and service. We were able to sit outside in the courtyard which worked out fine and we really enjoyed the meal - thanks!

Great value spot in the centre of Newport. Beds were super comfy and the breakfast great. Also very appreciated how helpful & friendly the staff were. Would definely recommend!

The first time we ate here was fine. The staff are friendly and the food was fine. However, our second time was not so good. We had booked a table but when we arrived we found that they had given it to someone else. They admitted their mistake and offered us a complimentary drink whilst we waited. After a while a table became available and we both ordered pork loin in a stroganoff sauce. The pork was tough and overcooked. The sauce tasted like a beef and mustard sauce - no cream or mushrooms (which is what we expected). We told two members of staff that we were disappointed with the food but got no response from them at all - not even an apology. We had obviously made an expensive mistake eating here and did not go back but ate elsewhere.

We ate here 3 times during our recent stay in Newport. Food and drink are great, very high quality and the staff are excellent, really friendly and helpful and very attentive. It's a very pleasant place to have a meal, great ambience. As vegetarians, myself and my husband particularly enjoyed the puy lentil cottage pie!

We walked from Dinas Island to Newport. This was a destination pub we looked up and thought it would be a good end to our holiday. How good it was indeed. Food was amazing, well cooked and presented. My partner had the chicken Kiev burger and I had the Welsh steak pie of the day.

As vegans with a dog, we are quite often disappointed with pub meals, but the Golden Lion was welcoming to dogs and had a reasonable choice of vegan/vegetarian meals. Green Thai curry with extra chips was excellent and the staff really friendly. It was very busy, even though midweek so book a table to avoid disappointment.

We were made very welcome by the friendly staff and especially the landlady with our dogs in the outside covered area, that is very warm as I went prepared for outside but removed both my coat and jumper it is that good on a cold night. The food for the 4 of us was the best we had all week eating out most days. The local beer was also good. We shall definitely be booking when we are back next time soon.

Just arrived in Newport after a long 8 hour trip and stopped in for dinner. Fully booked! Magdalena was very accommodating and we sat outside with drinks while waiting for a table to be free. Really appreciated her friendly hospitality! Lots of specials and menu items to choose from. Great way to start our week in Newport! Book ahead if you want to go!

Great customer service! We only had a short time to take a break so unfortunately couldn’t sample a main meal but the menu looked amazing. We did have time to have a quick lunch which was delicious, and when I accidentally knocked my drink over as our lunch was being served to our table it was replaced immediately. A great location with a nice beer garden and pleasant smiling staff. Will make sure we have more time when we are next in the area.

We were holidaying staying in Newport and visited the hotel/pub several times... Great atmosphere, cosy , great food and drinks.. Lovely food and great service. We've been here several times and always find the service to be great and friendly and the food is delicious too - particular favourite is the thai curry with chips and rice! Have never managed to have room for a pudding!

Lovely restaurant I had the GL burger and it was amazing, staff were nice and good location. My only complaint would be that the lighting was not good I could not really see what I was eating and it was emitting lots of heat.

We went last night for dinner with friends. We’ve not visited in a year. The menu had a great selection. I would have liked a salad but I am thinking it might not be quite the season yet. However the waitress was kind enough to offer some great recommendations which were delicious!!! Nothing was a bother with the questions we asked about the menu. Genuinely lovely staff who obviously enjoy their jobs. There is no tip added on the bill which is refreshing! I hate assumptions that restaurants seem to have nowadays. They were worth every penny of the 10% we added. The kitchen team did a fantastic job of our meals. Beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. We had the tempura prawns (delicious), the Kiev burger, lasagna, Thai green curry, fish and chips and side salad. We all agreed we would recommend what we had. Thank you for a lovely evening Ps Bring back the scotch eggs!! They were insane!!

We phoned to see whether we get a table and if we could bring the dog. There were no issues bringing the dog and they managed to fit us in which we were extremely appreciative. The service we received from Laura and the rest of the staff was exceptional. The food was served quickly and was really good. I ordered the Bean burger and my wife had the lentil cottage pie and would definitely recommend. Thank you Laura and the rest of the staff 👏👏👏

Hotel was nice but very noisy could people walking pass room and banging doors not as expected bed was terrible to singles pushed together all I could feel was the gap in the middle room was described as large double breakfast was on ok not the best

Friendly helpful staff. Lovely ambient music playing. Ate there Thursday night and again for Sunday lunch. Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious. Only one problem, I had vegetarian dish on Thursday and this was the only veggie option for Sunday lunch. I was advised the chicken was free range so opted for that. But came with pigs in blankets+ pork in the stuffing, I don't like pork. No need to serve it with chicken !!! Just paxo would have sufficed !!! Best to book in advance.
