Literally the rudest old woman behind the counter, shouts at you like she’s at borstal. Would make a rather good prison officer but as a front of house I’d rather employ jeffery dahmer.

Lovely chinese takeaway. Chicken curry and egg fried rice, prawn crackers. was really good and friendly staff.

Tried here this evening with my work colleague ordered chicken chowmein, a bag of chips and some vegetables spring rolls.. chowmein I asked for with some oyster sauce very fair sized portion was impressed, the chips was a very large bag from what I'm used to getting back home, and the spring rolls I got 12 of those.. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal the chowmein was outstanding, chips really nice aswell & as for the spring rolls they tasted outstanding aswell cost for the meal £13 quid pretty reasonable priced to be honest and a quick service aswell, so thanks! I'll make sure I return next time I'm down for some scran!

Lady was rude on phone and told us we took too long ordering, food is greasy and tasteless, chips were barely cooked, portions are big which would be a plus if the food was relatively edible, glad we’re only visiting for the weekend otherwise I’d rather go without Chinese food for the rest of my life than endure this hell hole being my regular.

We were put off visiting here for a while because the outside didn't give a good impression. The window display looks dirty and there are lots of dead flies in the window over the top of the menu. Having said all that, they have a 5 hygiene rating and some great reviews so we decided to give it a go. So glad we did. The staff are friendly, prices reasonable, clean inside and really tasty food and generous portion sizes. Will be back but please get rid of the dead flies in the window- it will be putting some people off.

Really good portions of good food - had the Singapore style rice vermicelli amongst others. Saved us from going hungry as almost everything else is shut after 3pm Sunday!

Won't fib. Reviews didn't appeal but options were limited. Glad we did try this place. The food is great and the portions are huge. Service was swift and staff polite. Doesn't deserve its position on # restaurants in Barnard Castle.

Tasty, fresh, big portions. Not greasy like other Chinese takeaways. Always come away pleased with my choice. Don't take card though and the décor hasn't been updated for decades.

Was staying next door to here so called in for our supper after a few drinks hubby had spring rolls and curry rice and chips and I had curry and chips the staff were very friendly the food was delicious and big portions would definitely recommend here

We're touring at home, rather than abroad this year, and eating takeaway instead of eating out. This was the best so far. Roast duck in black bean sauce with pepper for me. A generous portion, with plenty of meat, chunks of tasty vegetable, with a decent zing to it, for a relatively modest price. Sets a high standard.

After a few beers next door, got a lovely take away from here. Woman behind the screen was very helpful, the portion sizes were large and tasty.

Went here one night after we'd planned a long, busy day so as to make tea easier. Ordered early evening and food was ready to collect on time. Food was tasty, portions were huge and came with prawn crackers which were great! The chicken szechuan was particularly nice!

Having moved to the area in late October we hardly had time to settle in before 'Lockdown' was upon us, so no opportunity to try any local restaurants or takeaways. We decided last week to try a takeaway from The Golden Gate Chinese Takeaway, we ordered by phone and collection was within 30 minutes. The food was excellent, lots of flavour, good portion size and the best prawn crackers we have ever tasted - non greasey, crispy with lots of flavour. This will definitely be our 'go to Chinese Takeaway' from now on.

Called in on route home, lovely women on the phone took order, ordered beef Curry house special mushrooms and beef chow mein, big portions with the chowmein but overall food terrible, fried rice an abortion and I even left the curry, deffo better options elsewhere

We ordered what we thought was enough food for 4 people and the portion sizes meant we had much too much food left over - so beware and only order a portion between two people - it was excellent value for money and would have been even better had we realised how much we'd get. Good quality standard Chinese takeaway and very helpful staff.

This place is a Chinese takeaway and the food is good. They have a wide choice on the menu. It’s probably the best place in Barnard Castle to get a Chinese.

We drive to this take away which is 30 minutes away because it is so good. Best dish had to be beef in black bean and the chicken balls are crisp and juicy excellent value and quality.

We went here following a recommendation from friends and were not disappointed. The place was spotless, menu comprehensive and service good. The meals appeared to be a little pricy by takeaway standards, but the portions were huge and the meals were excellent value. The food was very tasty and piping hot. What more do you want?

A group of 10 looking to place an order, called to check vegan options with the restaurant and greeted by a very rude lady who refused to check with the chef whether the options were definitely vegan. Was told “If you have any doubt don’t order” and “darling I’m too busy to check, I’m not arguing with you”. In the time she spent being rude and argumentative she could have checked with the chef but was told she wasn’t able to do this as “he didn’t speak English”. Would not recommend this take away.

Having been disappointed with Barnard castles take away offering in the past, we took a chance and tried a take away from the golden gate last night... we were delighted! The food was delicious and excellent quality. Proper size king prawns and plenty of them, authentic taste and huge portions. Definitely going back for more!

Food freshly cooked to order so need to order ahead or wait a few minutes (20). Food is delicious with distinctive ingredients easily identified. Portions are substantial and I haven't managed to finish a Special Fried Rice in one go! Chicken pieces are very well cooked from substantial breast meat. Beef also v good. Curry sauce is one of best I have had from a take away, flavoursome, not gloopy or too thick through over warming and drying out. Chips are superbly cooked with firm exterior but fluffy inside. One of the best take always I have used and will be doing so again on a regular basis.

I have tea from here nearly every weekend, quick phone ordering service, polite staff , excellent food , decent price, what’s not to like ??? Would recommend it to everyone!!!

Had spare ribs with honey and chili. House special chow mein. Pancake rolls. All very good with very big portions. The ribs were the best I have had from a takeaway. Chow mein was a meal for 2 easily and very tasty. When Im back in the area I will definitely be visiting again.

We have used the Golden Gate several times now and no longer think about an alternative. Food is always too much and always enough left over for another day. Efficient service. Staff very polite and helpful. Always give complimentary crackers.

My family and I agree that this is the nicest Chinese takeaway we've had in and around Durham and we've had a few! The meat quality is always good and the food is tasty. Always hot upon collection too.

Bit expensive for what it is. Friendly staff, very quick, but disappointing food. Had frozen vegetables in and there wasn't a hint of oyster sauce in the 'duck and oyster sauce', it was like water and cornstarch. On the plus side, brother's sweet and sour sauce was nice.

The Golden Gate is a very good takeaway. Good food and huge portions augmented by friendly service - what's not to like?Actually, there are a couple of small things I'm not overly keen on:I hate tinned ham, and really wish some Chinese restaurants would stop using it. It's actually getting rarer these days, but they use small cubes of it here.And there really isn't any need to augment fresh vegetables with a handful of frozen mixed veg. It doesn't really add anything.Other than that - all very good, and highly recommended.

We enjoyed our meal from here - the food was ready in good time, freshly cooked, good portion size and tasty. The waiting area was pleasant and the staff friendly. It was busy with phone orders and regulars from the moment it opened. I'll certainly use this one again!

Telephoned an order in to be told it would ready in twenty minutes, I thought how good can it be if ready that quickly, we ordered large spring rolls which were delicious and freshly cooked, a tasty king prawn and mushroom curry and a good egg foo yung. The prawn crackers were nice too. Haven't been able to get a decent Chinese in Barnard Castle for a long time, that may have changed.

Has changed hands, and although good before, it is now better. All the food tastes and looks fresher, less salty. The portions are large. The value is good. The staff are friendly . Looks cleaner inside. Don’t have a Chinese often, but this is still our go to Chinese takeaway.

Llamamos esta noche después de leer las críticas de aquí y disfrutamos de nuestra comida, las costillas estaban muy bien aunque la salsa estaba climatizada en un alto horno, así que si es posible poner en un plato! El tamaño de la porción era como señaló una critica muy grande, ambos disfrutamos de nuestras comidas y cuando volvamos aquí tendremos una comida de aquí.

Paramos para llevar, usando este la comida en nuestra opinión todo empeoraba, Alguien ha mencionado que ya tenían una comida y fue mucho mejor, así que prueba, estamos muy contentos de que he cambiado el menú y la tienda en sí tiene mucho been tidier y limpio. La comida que nos dieron era muy agradable y el pollo utilizado mucho mejor que antes. La señora que nos atendió fue muy agradable y sabe, ha mejorado mucho durante todo el servicio.

Comida China era normal que te dan buenas porciones, pero no recomendaría, sólo hay otros dos chinos en el Castillo de barnard que takeouts también son de mi opinión, así que alguien necesita su juego. La tienda en sí es muy cansado y un poco desagradable necesita una renovación.

I always like getting food from here for my birthday or special meals. The portion sizes are big, the prices are ok, normal for most chinese take-aways. The duck pancakes are great!!

Not a Bad Chinese had some quite good dishes, certainly the best in Barnard Castle. Shame there is not a proper Chinese sit in Restaurant in BC anymore:(
