We first went to this pub during the Covid period and were impressed. Went a second time but the Chef was on holiday. This was our third time. The food is exceptional, some of the best home cooked pub food I have had. We shared three starters, and had three mains. The portions are good sized but the quality and taste were exceptional. Starters, pulled brisket hash, black pudding stack and from the gluten free menu garlic steak bites with Stilton sauce. Mains, gnu burger, steak and ale pie and the Venison casserole. Not one complaint from the three of us. One of us was an ex chef who can be critical, however he was really impressed as it was the first time he had eaten there. Lovely village pub, decent selection of beers, wines and spirits. More importantly a very pleasant landlord and landlady. A bonus for me was the music selection on in the background, rounded off a good day and an excellent meal

Second visit. Again, food was absolutely gorgeous. Proper home cooked food, expertly cooked and large portions. All of us enjoyed our dishes and pretty much every scrap eaten. We will definitely visit again, nowhere else in the area matches the quality of the food here.

We have an evening meal at The Gnu once a month with friends. This started as a one off as we wanted a meal before going to a pub quiz. However, the food and the friendliness of the owners has been so incredible that we now just book her every time we are going out to do a nearby quiz. All four of us have tried a range of things from the menu and special boards, and have never had a single bad thing to so. Food is freshly cooked and absolutely delicious. Prices are also very reasonable for the quality of food.

Came here for lunch with friends. We chose the burger, sausage and mash and the steak pie - all were extremely good. Even though we were all full, greed got the better of us and we finished with the apple and cherry crumble and the sticky toffee pudding. This was our first visit and certainly won't be our last - great food, very friendly staff. Just one tip though - go with an empty stomach as the portions are generous!

Staying at GNU, had lunch there. Lovely pizza, too much for 1 person. Husband had. Steak pie chips and peas, that was also lovely. Land Lord & Land Lady very hospitable. Stayed night, which was very comfortable, and had all the amenities you needed. Also quiet. Had breakfast following morning, which was also delicious, hot and quality meats.

A hidden Yorkshire gem! Great pub grub, great service and fair prices. We had Sunday lunch which for two courses was £18. My wife had prawn cocktail and I had the black pudding stack - two pieces of black pudding sandwiching a bacon slice in a mustard sauce. The roasts come with interesting veg for a change - cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, carrot and swede mash and green beans. Highly recommended!

I was visiting a friend in North Newbald and needed two nights accommodation. He arranged a room at the Gnu for me and it was just perfect. First of all they took the trouble to get a key to me and turn the heating on even though they are closed on Mondays. Second the bed was so comfortable (I stayed in Room 3) I upset my wife by telling her that it was better than home. And finally they did an early full English breakfast for my friend and I because we had an early golf tee time in Beverley and it was just the best. I love visiting Yorkshire and it’s actually probably because you get a level of hospitality that is just so so nice. The Gnu is not the Ritz but I bet the welcome is better, the hospitality is greater and you cannot get a pint of Black Sheep at the Ritz.

We decided to try the GNU Inn having never visited previously. Lovely village pub and a great choice for Sunday dinner. Both me and my husband had the pate starter which was lovely. We asked for more bread and was given it at no extra charge. For main course my husband had roast beef and I had roast pork. Both enjoyed our meals and had plenty of veg, we couldn’t manage dessert. I think the price reflects the quality and quantity of food. Looking forward to visiting again during the week!

Excellent food and service again. My friends and I were shown to a table next to the cost fire. Although the menu isn’t extensive, there is plenty of choice. My two friends both ordered the suet crust pie with chips and veg, which on request came with extra gravy. Both said it was delicious and they both enjoyed the wonderful food. I chose the gammon steak and being on a health kick asked for salad instead of chips. They were happy to oblige and it duly arrived, complete with two eggs (pineapple available) and peas. It was cooked to perfection and very tasty. My companions ordered desserts (sticky toffee pudding and custard) which arrived a little sooner than expected but I’m told it was excellent. It was a large portion so good value. I ordered coffee which complement the meal. The pub started to fill up and we felt a little rushed to leave our seats for locals to sit down - it was quiz night (Wednesday), but otherwise the meal, service, and ambience were great. At a cost of under £20 per head, including drinks, The GNU is worth returning to. Would appreciate some healthy options on the menu

Been in the Gnu loads for drinks with friends but never actually ate there, been trying to find a fairly local village pub that does good Sunday lunches as we’re fed up with some of the ‘chain’ pubs and their microwaved food so decided to try the Gnu for food as we’ve heard good things about it. Wish we’d done it sooner!! The pubs located in a really nice area which is fairly easy to get to and has ample parking at the rear, it’s pretty traditional inside and well looked after - the staff and owners are great, super friendly and can’t do enough for you. The food is absolutely spot on, freshly cooked homemade traditional pub grub at very reasonable prices - the Sunday lunch was superb, good size portions, tasty and great value. Safe to say we’ll be returning for Sunday lunch more often.

Meeting up with friends, we chose this pub as a new venue. Situated in a quiet village to the West of Hull, a very picturesque location with a good sized car park and beer garden. On arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff and show our table and given menus. the pub is very cosy, with good seating areas, a separate bar and a lounge with a log burner (which was regularly fed during the evening). After ordering drinks we browsed the menu and chose our meals. The menu was typical pub grub which something for everyone. I chose Fish and Chips and was given the choice to have my fish skinned, My friends chose lasagne with salad and garlic bread, and steak and ale pie with chips and peas. The landlord who took our order was very knowledgeable about the dishes on offer and very helpful in us making our choices. At around £10 per main course, the prices were very reasonable. Once the food arrived, we tucked in - the portion sizes were very substantial and beautifully cooked. The pie had a suet crust and plenty of gravy, and the fish had very golden crisp batter. Thumbs up all round. After a brief break we ordered 'pudding'. A good choice from crumbles, sponges and suet pudding, all available with custard, cream or ice cream. Despite our first choice not being available, we settled on hot chocolate fudge cake, ginger sponge and treacle sponge. The sponge puddings served with plenty of custard and again the portions were huge but tasted fantastic and were soon demolished. At £3.25 they didn't break the bank either like some other establishments. All in all it was a very pleasant visit, made all the better by lovely home cooked food and a welcoming atmosphere both from the staff and the local clientele. A bonus of the evening was the lovely background music which was appreciated by all of us

They had a live singer (can't remember her name, but she sung with her husband) and they was great & hilarious! Best random night out we've had for a while...... Apart from waking up with a VERY sore head the next day! Keep up the good work team!!

Travelling home from a weekend away we lost our way & found ourselves at the Gnu Inn, in North Newbald. What a wonderful place to get lost. The staff are really friendly & the food was fantastic. I asked for chillie & got curry, my thick Yorkshire accent at fault there. Another great mistake that was meant to be. It was the best curry I have had outside of Bradford. Very well presented & beautifully made. My partner had the lasagna & again this was full of flavor, proper Yorkshire portion too!.We were so glad to get lost that we shall be back again. Our only disappointment is that we live 2 hours away for it to be made a local eatery.

We visited The Gnu recently with my mother in law. We wanted somewhere nice with good pub grub as my Mum in law doesn't like what she calls 'fussy food'.So my husband found the website for The Gnu, it looked a really professional website, well designed, informative etc. When we arrived the outside of the pub matched the website in terms of design and we were thinking 'this looks really nice'.Then we stepped inside, and seemed to be transported back to just an ordinary pub that was very traditional - there just seemed to be a total mis-match between the external image and the internal one.Staff were all dressed in black and it has to be said they did all look like security guards...HOWEVER, they were all incredibly friendly and the food was really good. Good honest pub grub, good prices and friendly staff. So I can see why it gets good reviews. We did come out though thinking that it was almost a surreal experience!

Went for tea tonight, my husband had the big burger which he certainly enjoyed, whilst they catered for my Weight Watchers diet without any problem. Oh and the new coffee machine gives out a fantastic coffee! Thank you.

Visited on a Wednesday night and found the pub to have a lovely atmosphere of a traditional country pub. There was quite a good selection of meals on the menu and a specials board. I had a mushroom stroganoff and partner had a homemade chicken curry. We both thoroughly enjoyed the meals and the staff were very helpful and polite. We will definately return.

We only called in for a quick pint to kill an hour or so, but the food looked so nice we ended up getting the rest of the family and eating here. We weren't disappointed, the food was lovely, really good value and so much of it!!!!! The new owners have kept all t good bits of this traditional pub and added their own touches to make it a little better. We will be back.

After several visits to the GNU we can honestly say that the food is fantastic. We have tried a variety from the menu, last week having Mushroom Stroganoff, which was very tasty to my husband having a gammon which was quite a plateful. This is a village pub run by a family who are trying and succeeding in these hard times. The hand pull beer was good too.

Visited today for a quick drink and ended up having Sunday lunch which arrived quickly and was lovely. A good selection of veg and a HUGE Yorkshire pudding each. A little bit on the pricey side for Sunday lunch at £7.95 a head, but well worth it. As always, the beer was lovely. Will visit again.

Met up with friends for a meal, drink and chat. First time for 2 of us since new owners took over and wished we had tried before. We had gammon, lasagne and mushroom stroganoff all of which were very hearty and tasteful. The service was attentive and Tracey needs a mention here. Will definitely be going back and trying to plough our way through the menu!

We had eaten here 5 years ago and having heard that there was a change of management we thought we would give it another try.The lounge area is not particularly inspiring as you walk in - quite old fashioned with a few tables round the outside. We picked up a couple of menus from the bar - a typical bar menu with steaks, curry, lasagne, burgers, etc. We made our order at the bar, picked up a couple of drinks and sat at the table near the front of the lounge. The staff were all very friendly and soon place settings and sauces were being delivered.Unfortunately I have to say that the food was pretty average. We had 2 different versions of mushrooms to start with - garlic and with Stilton. Both had a thick batter round them and a small side salad - tasted OK but there was more batter than mushroom. For mains my wife had the gammon and chips with a side salad. The gammon was small I would have said, though cooked well, and the chips tasted like cheap frozen ones. My steak and ale pie was hot and tasty. So overall the food was fine but nothing special and as such won't entice us back again with so many other good choices of pub food in the area.

I visited the Gnu last month and loved the food although the restaurant was cold, when we returned last Sunday the food was still excellent the fire was on creating a nice warm environment. It was nice to see lots of people seeming to enjoy their food too.

Myself and friends visit East Yorkshire for five days, on an annual basis, about the same time each year to compete in a competition. We have previously visited the Gnu Inn and found it perfectly acceptable but unremarkable. Last Thursday two of us paid a visit as we always scout about the area looking for somewhere decent to eat. We were very pleasantly surprised to find the Gnu under the new management of a charming couple who made us feel at home. The pub still carried on the business of a traditional village hostelry and is all the better for that. A good selection a beers and local ales was to be had along with a beautifully cooled Guinness. I ordered the mixed grill at £17.95 and my mate the haddock and Chips at £8.99. Food arrived a reassuring 20 minutes later at it was immediately obvious that everything had been freshly cooked to order. The mixed grill was unbelievable and should only be attempted by those with a serious appetite and a love of good meat. Steak, lamb, pork chop, some other cut of pork, black pudding, onion rings, pineapple, mushroom, chunky chips and peas, all beautifully cooked. (I couldn't finish all the peas !) My mate loved his haddock and chips with mushy peas and salad. Such was the standard of the food and the pleasant ambiance of the pub that we forewent looking for an eating establishment the following evening and returned to the Gnu where I confirmed that the haddock and chips were excellent and my mate extolled the virtues of the homemade steak pie and accompaniments. The Eton Mess deserts were similarly delightful. If you want overpriced flummery, colourful swirls and other pretentious food this is not the place for you. If you appreciate the best of ingredients, cooked in a traditional, heartwarming manner and served in man sized portions you will not be disappointed. See you next year.

We had lunch ere on a Sunday following a few recommendations from friends. The food was good pub grub with a selection of roast dinners available. The portions were HUGE!!. Popular with ramblers and families alike. Prices were average and décor a little shabby but old world as well. We would definitely go again.

Having had a very bad experience in the pub across the road (Tiger Inn) we decided to go to the Gnu Inn. We had a lovely warm welcome from the landlady who was happy to serve us despite us being a little muddy from our hiking. She was pleasant, chatty and we are looking forward to returning there to sample their menu. I would recommend this pub to everyone, best in the village of North Newbald by far. Thank you

We would like to congratulate the chef on a job well done & wish him success in the future. Our breakfast was equally as good, cooked exactly how we like it.

We stopped in on a Tuesday late afternoon. There was only one table occupied so it was nice and quiet. We both had double scoop cones. There were loads of ice cream flavours to choose from. Yummy.

We booked into the lodges next to the Gardeners Inn and decided to walk around for dinner & drinks. The venue is decorated for Halloween which I did enjoy and we had a lovely welcome from the waitress. A few item were sold out but the menu was plentiful and the food did not disappoint. I had the sizzling hunters chicken and my partner had Korean Chicken. Portion size was fantastic the side salad & slaw was fresh, definitely the best hunters chicken I’ve had. Banoffee Pie & cream for dessert again it was better than any other I’ve tried. Lovely atmosphere, service time felt right for the number of tables eating and the price was reasonable. Would recommend 100%

First visit to this lovely little restaurant to celebrate 🍾 both Mother’s Day and my wife's 60th birthday and we were not disappointed! The setting in the window table with background music and plenty of space was perfect. We ate off the a la carte menu and we both had three courses complimented by a bottle of fizz. Each course was food heaven and the service was exceptional so we will be returning for the Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday in April. Thank you
