Amazing venue with great atmosphere. Highly recommended. Word of warning however, they have very restrictive drinks policies. No chance of an open drink if you’re in level 2 or 3, not clear why not when every other theatre or concert hall manages to make it work.

My friend and I are here for David Fray Concert Friday 4th October 2024. As I have never been to this area of Newcastle and Gateshead ,I visited The Glasshouse this morning to know exactly the layout of this impressive building before tonight's concert. All the staff I spoke with most helpful and friendly. The whole place has a very good vibe. Only wished I didn't live so far away from this excellent venue.

This is a great venue--but the problem is its very poor location if you don't drive. My partner is in a wheelchair and we either have to get off at Gateshead metro and go down the very steep bank then cross the extremely busy Tyne Bridge Road (takes about 10 minutes) or leave Newcastle Monument metro --via the Millenium Bridge (30 minutes). If going this way it means I have to push her up a very steep ramp just outside the venue. There used to be a bus that stopped at the Glasshouse going to Newcastle but not now. We often have to get a wheechair taxi on the return journey which costs £35 (if you can book one)--if not we have to go back up the long bank to Gateshead metro. Why they can't organise public transport to stop there I don't know--the bus when it was operating was well-used. Another irritation is booking--the seat map on the website does not have any wheelchair spaces you can select so you have to ring them up--and they only receive calls 3 days a week. The phone lines are staffed by volunteers who aren't professional enough.

We arrived an hour before the performance of Fishermans Friends to try and get food. After queing we were told that they were only serving sandwiches and cakes because they couldn’t gurantee it would be out in time. If you look at the menu, it is just soup, salads, flat breads etc very light food and hardly requiring any cooking! We took our business elsewhere and got “street food” next to the river. Stop serving food an hour before performances should be communicated in advance!

Visited today with my wife. We made our way to the premises from Gateshead Quay side using the many steps leading to the entrance. My wife and I are both in our 70s and found this quite a climb. At the entrance we were politely told by the security guard that the premises was not open to the public today. In future would it be possible to place a notice at the bottom of the climb informing the public of this. Many thanks

Had a fantastic evening at the Lea salonga concert it was a sell out show so busy very warm in the waiting areas and not enough seats for everyone to be sat down while waiting for the doors to open which is a disappointment if you wanted a pre drink in comfort had to stand and propped up against the ledge the only benefits of this was the view over the Tyne I would definitely recommend pre ordering and paying for the drinks for the interval just walk out and find your drink in the back ledge with your name on the receipt very handy to beat the huge queue I would also definitely recommend the quick pit stop the by the river brew Co

The Glasshouse is an international centre for musical education and concerts. Opened in 2004 as Sage Gateshead and occupied by North Music Trust. The Glasshouse contains three performance spaces, a 1,700-seater, a 450-seater, and a smaller rehearsal and performance hall, the Northern Rock Foundation Hall. The rest of the building was designed around these three spaces to allow for maximum attention to detail in their acoustic properties. Structurally it is three separate buildings, insulated from each other to prevent noise and vibration travelling between them. Sage One was intended as an acoustically perfect space, modelled on the Musikverein in Vienna. Its ceiling panels may be raised and lowered and curtains drawn across the ribbed wooden side walls, changing the sound profile of the room to suit any type of music. Sage Two is a smaller venue, possibly the world's only ten-sided performance space. A great looking building with great architecture.

This review is for the Glasshouse itself, not the band as they were fantastic. When purchasing tickets, it should be made clear that if you aren’t on the ground floor, you won’t be able to take a drink in with you. An hour is a long time to sit without one. I just feel it should be made plain after paying £33 for a ticket, it’s at the least, disappointing. Floor 3, had no drinks on the pumps and only one bottle of Brown Ale in the fridge. Rather unprepared I thought, for the amount of people there. Girls on the bar were great though. It’s my 4th visit for a gig and it won’t put me off coming back again.

Well this evening we had tickets for Rumours of Fleetwood Mac at The Glasshouse, starting at 7.30pm. We arrived at 7pm as we usually do, to have a glass of wine brfore the show and book halftime drinks. But sadly not this evening. Exited the taxi to be met with a horrendous queue tailing down the entry ramp. We managed to get in by 25mins past, others were not so lucky and were trailing in 10 mins after gig started ! No chance to grab a glass of wine before show started or book half time drinks, It was chaos ...lots of grumpy punters. Apparently The Glasshouse were trialling a bag check at the entrance. Nothing wrong with that nice to see a bit of security but it didn't work, I'm guessing your revenue from the bars will be down. Half time queues at the bars were horrendous, argey bargey and very disgruntled punters. Honestly the band were fab as always, however are evening was spoilt by actions of The Gatehouse, sending an email saying there is going to be a bag check did not prepare anyone for the delays and chaos that followed..you need to review how you organise this going forward as tonight, from a customer perspective was disappointing!!

Poor show on the communication front today. We are regular visitors to the Glasshouse and visit at least 2 to 3 times a week for coffee, food and drinks. We also buy tickets for gigs, the last ones were for 10cc. We always check the website for opening hours as we know they can vary from week to week also depending on school holidays. The website stated opening hours today were 4.30pm until 11.30pm so we decided to visit about 5.30pm for food and a drink. We were refused entry as apparently there was a ticket only event on. There is absolutely nothing on the website or fb saying venue closed for a private event, just that it is open. Really poor and when we asked if we could at least grab a coffee we were refused. Just wondering what would have happened if we had tickets for Rumours of Fleetwood Mac who were playing later, and came early for refreshments. The Glasshouse is a massive building so surely there should be access to all customers during advertised opening hours as well as enough space for any private event. Not impressed Glasshouse .

Dionne Warwick 5th May 2024, dreadful, save your £60+ and go and see an up and coming artist. Majority of the show was her sitting on a settee talking about her life, singing was really bad just a handful,of songs that her son had to help her out with. Lots of people left at the interval, we stayed in the hope it would get better, it didn’t. If I wanted to watch the Netflix documentary on her life I can do that at home for free, but it was played frequently throughout! I really think the Glasshouse has a responsibility to vet acts before scheduling as we were robbed by a granny gangsta (as she describes herself) in Gateshead. We go there for music in that amazing acoustic building, not to hear all our yesterdays from an old lady.

May 5th, Dionne Warwick, 'Don't Make Me Over' Tour. Expected to hear a legend sing an array of songs from her legendary catalogue. Instead, was subjected to a screened documentary and a chitty chat on the sofa, with only six songs sung over the whole evening. As she sang, 'Walk on By', a number of the audience, 'walked on out'. This format makes a mockery of the non-refundable £60.50, spent on a ticket. The weighting of docu-flick & chitty chat was proportionately badly wrong and the response of the audience to her evidenced this. She struggles to sing and is supported by her eldest son. She invited the audience to sing along, more like, 'sing for her'. No disrespect for Dionne Warwick, her career, her causes, her bridging, but the whole experience was terrible, except for when she gave the audience what they had come for - legendary songs. Time for her to hang up her tonsils and ensure prospective audiences are clearly informed of her tour being a talk show. I have no issue with the venue. It's brilliant! My 1* is for entertainment value of that performance.

I go for the classical music, which is invariably superb. HOWEVER, since its rebranding as The Glasshouse, its publicity material and notes on the music have taken a turn towards the nauseatingly juvenile, patronising the audience as if they were 11years old. You don't get 11 year olds to come to classical concerts that way! Leave that to their parents and grandparents, upon whom the new style really grates. Have a look at what other classical concert venues do. Please!

Sadly where we were sat wasn’t the best view for the performance we paid £77 for. As people were stood up, dancing coming and going constantly. Thought that it would be a seated venue and not stood. There was no security at the door to check bags or anything which seemed bad. There was constant people who were grinding couple in front of everyone and it wasn’t stopped. I don’t think it was appropriate for the show we were seeing and it ruined my experience as I couldn’t watch it and enjoy it without seeing the couple.

Venue is great, facilities are being kept updated. The pub addition was nice for a pre show drink. The brasserie refurbishment is very nice and the pre show menus rotate to match the performance. Two things to rectify. Our interval pre order for drinks was lost and then took the entire interval to rectify, which was not pleasant. Led to having to quickly decant our drinks into plastic cups as not to miss the performance. So better management of interval pre orders and speed to rectify errors, knowing people have limited time needed. The second issue was how late comers were admitted during the performance, both warm up and main act. As we were at a poetry night this was highly disruptive. There was a constant stream of noise and flashes of usher torches as people arrived late into the hall. Should that conversation to see tickets not happen outside the hall, then the persons ushered in more discreetly?

Part 1: Dec 2019 We went to see Tim Minchin, we got directed downstairs initially however an usher advised we were in the wrong seats and asked us to move upstairs. Upon moving upstairs we were then refused entry because the show had started so we missed the majority of the first half of the show. The fact the usher interrupted during the performance and that Tim referenced a late comer to the show indicated we were the victim of an overzealous member of staff really impaired our night out. Part 2: Sep 2023 It has been a few years since I have been and standards have been maintained. Today's delight was the bar staff serving drinks in plastic cups, entering the Sage 2 to be told drinks aren't allowed upstairs but if we take them back to the bar they will keep them until the break. Returned to the bar to be told they couldn't look after the drinks. My feedback would be to have clearer visibility of policies before the point of sale.

Amazing family friendly restaurant with brilliant knowledgeable staff. This little gem is on my doorstep and the staff and management go above and beyond to cater for my daughter with food allergies. To top it off, I am vegetarian and they also have a superb menu choice for me too. Great place - if you’ve not been here, give it a try. I promise you won’t be disappointed! x
