The George Inn in Selby

We are local and use the George quite a bit We just can't understand how they keep on running out of beer, today no beer on tap at all We can understand a one off but it's constant Even ran out of Pinot Grigio today as we were looking for an alternative drink Who is doing the orders?

Fantastic experience; wonderful breakfast

Just returned from a two nights stay at this Pub and hotel. The hotel room was very basic and the shower was very poor. It was warm enough but no pressure at all so took ages to have a proper shower. On arrival we were asked if we had been before which we hadn’t and then told about the amenities. Unfortunately we were not told about showing our key when we bought around of drinks which would have given us 10% off the bill. We only found out after paying for two rounds of drinks and then that was too late. Also we were thinking of having an evening meal on the Saturday night but the bar was so crowded because of the fight on sky sports that we went elsewhere. The breakfast was also quite disappointing for a number of reasons. There was no orange juice only apple and cranberry and there was no marmalade. To top our experience off at breakfast this morning a member of staff could be clearly heard voicing her displeasure at being there. This was not a cheap stay and we would expect better service and amenities for the price we paid.

This is a friendly pub with accommodation in the town centre Selby.The rooms are clean but basic but mine had a bath tub which was a nice suprise! Food was average but good value( I think a main and drink for 10 quid).Rather noisy at night ,which can be problematic in the Summer months if you have your window open for ventilation.There is parking.I would stay again though if only for a night,so not too bad

Top PUB atmosphere, but the kitchen NO. The hotel, for me a horror...

We stayed for 5 nights, the staff were lovely very helpful and friendly, location is great with a good bus service and train, food was beautiful wine was lovely and the prices were very reasonable, we would definitely stay again, thanks again to all the staff,

We ordered food. I ordered a cheese tostie and found out it was fried bread full of grease. The other 2 food orders weren't that great either was a lovely pub near the market apart from the food.

The pub was busy almost the time lovely place to take dogs music was always good. Service spot on location one of the best tremendous a credit to selby people staff and regulars thank you see ya:soon

Horrific automated phone service. Cant get through, couldn’t book rooms. Answer the phone and be proactive!

We enjoy the long island ice tea before dinner.

Friendly staff giving reasonable service at this great location did not make up for the general lack of care and attention given to the property. Wallpaper hanging off the ceiling, plaster falling off the wall, but worst of all, an exceptionally dirty towel rail in the bathroom so I asked for it to be cleaned. However, only the side facing the toilet was washed down, the remainder left covered in dust. The breakfast containers were covered in "crud" along with the milk pourer. When pointed out, we were told it would be attended to later. We don't know if it was as we left. 😞 Get your act together Stonegate Group as until then, we won't be staying with you.

Great central location for Selby, good price and nice clean room

Met up with family for a funeral. Nice friendly staff.

Great pub and hotel full of character and characters. We had a tasty bar meal and the next day a very good breakfast. Extremely reasonable for B&B and set in the beautiful town of Selby.

Good warm welcoming and friendly cosy pub, good selection of food and drink on offer, also must visit for all sports fans as there are tv screens everywhere showing all the latest sporting events, seating outside front and back, electronic and traditional board games are available for the customers to enjoy.

Lovely although sometimes run out of food or have to pre order in advance for certain meals

Nice pub, a little more expensive, but great people frequent the place. I've not seen any unsociable behaviour in the pub after 10 years of calling in.

17 went for Xmas meal. Christmas meal was ok but not exceptional. Service good. Down side was pub atmosphere, TV screens and pop music playing which you don't want when a group of people want to eat and talk who haven't seen each other for a while. We were in a separate room from pub. Asked for them to be turned off but was told they couldn't. Needs addressing.

Good warm welcoming and cosy friendly pub, good selection of food and drink on offer, worth taking a look at the midweek meal deals with a choice of main course and either a starter or dessert also included is an alcoholic or non alcoholic drink for £10 The pub is excellent for sports fans as there are multiple tv screens all around the pub covering an array of live sports, outside seating area and also seating outside at the front of the pub, good varied food menu, overall a nice relaxing and fun place to visit, would highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.

Great value for money with the meal deal £20 in total for two mains and puddings and a soft drinks. Waitress was very efficient and friendly too

Staff fantastic. Location fantastic.bed fantastic. Bath etc fantastic. however and i mean however. The single room is not fit for 2024/25 times. Its dirty dusty and dated.ok for just sumware to sleep. Decor up stairs lets it all down!!

Very friendly pub great location next to the Abbey

Friendly, warm, cosy and ideally placed in town centre. There was thudding music and occasional outside shouting but was pre-warned about this so was expected. Room was clean, cosy and roomy. The breakfast was tasty and plentiful.

Close to the bus station for York, staff are very helpful, food is tasty. Nice friendly pub with rooms.

Regularly call in during the day and on an evening when in town, beer is great and at reasonable prices too.

Fantastic location friendly staff and poper pub food I had the fish and chip platter and it was super tasty just the right sized portion and unbelievable value. You can also order and pay from the app so no hanging around for the bill before catching the last train. Highly recommended

Went for food. Basic beyond belief. The pizza was clearly out of a freezer wrapper. Not for a return visit.

Had a lasagne was great plus sausage and mash’ Half the price as restraunts’ friendly warm staff’ what more do u want !!!!!

Popped in for a catch up with my godchildren, & we had a meal. Basic pub food but tasty enough & reasonable price. Nice decorations up for Halloween. Staff member did make a mistake on 2 of the burgers but quickly got replacements.

Booked a Saturday night stay here as attending a Judie Tzuke gig at the local Town Hall from Bradford as we didn't fancy a late night drive home. Good move as our accomodation was only a ten minute walk away and I could hang up my keys. Room 10 was clean, the bed comfortably firm and the view of the Abbey a bonus. One of the two beside lights wasn't working (as the plug wouldn't go into the socket) and there was no plastic beaker in the bathroom, so we had to us a glass one. Not good. The cheap wardrobe with few hangers and no doors was poor. In the bar, my partner ordered the Steak and Ale pie (pictured) and enjoyed it very much. Beer selection and prices were good too. The locals were raucous at times but the atmosphere was good and football fans were well catered for with screens all over the public rooms, including at some tables. We had free parking for our stay, 10% off at when ordering food and drink was welcome. I was a tad concerned there may be noise from the bar or the bells, but neither interrupted our rest. Sunday morning breakfast was lovely. Along with cereals, fruit and juice, a choice of "traditional" or "full" cooked was on offer - the difference being one sausage, egg, bacon and hash brown or two. We both opted for the latter. It was delicious. There was a 9am rush of customers but the lady front of house coped admirably and responded quickly when anything ran out when it was pointed out to her. Even the chef backstage helping out to serve at one point. The hotel is in need of a lick of paint in places, particularly on parts of the outside but we felt for the price point it was good value and the friendly, helpful nature of the staff made our stay. Great food and drink, stayed the night, very nice rooms a d beds..Parking dump sat nav..it's left passed bookies left again left again, and straight o with car park on your right .and then free parking and easy access to George..

Really good stay here at The George Inn in Selby. Location is amazing, right in the centre, next to the Abbey. Very friendly staff and whole pub is dog friendly. Good car parking, behind the pub (just give your rego to the staff as they have to log it into their system to stop you getting a fine). Great pub food and the cooked breakfast (choice given) included in the price is excellent! For people travelling with a dog (like us) there’s green space out the front (near the Abbey) to walk/toilet and the pub provides water bowls and treats in the pub. For wheelchair users, the pub is all ground level and the rooms are upstairs, we didn’t see a lift but you’d have to check with the pub for accessibility information.

Stayed 1 night, staff were friendly and polite. Room was clean, cosy and really comfy beds slept really well. Bathroom could do with a bit of updating but had everything we needed. Breakfast was lovely. Free parking. We enjoyed our stay and was exellent value for money will definitely stay again...😊

Straightforward pub inn. Rooms clean. Good breakfast. Can be a bit noisy but that's its central local.

This was nice little find and we have revisited since the last bank holiday. We stayed overnight on two separate occasions and found everything excellent: the room, the food, breakfast and all staff were very welcoming, kind and accommodating. Great atmosphere from the music. Food was reasonably priced and delicious. We will be back soon!

We stopped here for 1 night on our way to Yorkshire and we had a lovely stay! The staff is very friendly, and the vegetarian breakfast was excellent. Clean rooms and dog friendly too.

Great town centre location and good spot for cyclists to stay overnight. Rooms a bit tired but ok.

We enjoyed a lovely stay at the George. The staff were very polite and helpful. The room was clean, well appointed and the bed firm and comfortable, we slept well. The toiletries in the bathroom were a very nice and welcome touch. The guest discount on drinks was a surprising benefit to our stay and we enjoyed many a pint in the beer garden. Thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast with everything cooked to our liking. The Abbey bells accompanied our food which was an amazing and very special experience. We couldn't fault our stay and we will be back again soon.

I support a person with learning difficulties who loves to eat here, so I take them.

Location is a 'little tired'. Meal in the pub was nice and good value. Wi-Fi is supplied, but was so slow it was unusable. Single bed room was a reasonable size. Pub is right in the centre of Selby, if that's where you want to be. Free parking, but I suspect it will fill up quickly.

Friendly staff and rooms were clean enough but very dated and in desperate need of a refurb. No proper handle on bathroom door which stuck a bit. Just a littlentired really but it is an old building.

The bar is delightful as much as the hotel in itself. The food and drinks are quite cheap for the quality !! Don’t hesitate to eat there if you want, it’s really worth the money. You can even play retro video games at your own table, as some high tables are provided with a tv of their own. Free parking just behind the hotel. Very dog friendly !!

Good value for money accommodation in the centre of Selby with a decent breakfast included.

Convenient for train into York. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable and clean room, although bathroom in need of updating. Room fairly well insulated so not too much disturbance from pub noise. Breakfast excellent, nothing too much trouble. Overall, good value for money.

Called in for lunch. It was disgusting, sauces on big breakfast appeared uncooked, fried eggs overdone and ripped on plate. Horrendous meal

Shabby Hotel inside and outside put shelby to shame. Room okish but paper peeling of wall !!!. Evening meal was just edible but definitely been warmed up brioche bun burnt no apologies. Coffee machine broke..staff unfriendly

As an old pub with a very reasonable price point for both accommodation & food / drink, I've given my ratings based on expectations & not a comparison to the Ritz.

Comfy rooms although nay be a bit noisy if you are on first floor. Evening meals were very tasty and the breakfast was excellent

Bought my two daughters with me from Kent and got the family room. Was really impressed with the George Inn. Room was lovely, clean and fair size too. Also had a lovely view out the window of the Abbey and the staff were really nice and friendly. Would recommend to anyone and will definitely be my number one choice when we come back.

Absolutely lovely hotel, free parking at the rear. Really clean. Good sized rooms. Nice bed and pillows. Breakfast was massive. Right next to Selby Abbey. Will definitely stay again. Only downside was no lift but I did request a low floor due to mobility and was given one.

Couple of pints and a game of darts

Here 1 night. Very pleasant stay. Room was basic, but clean. Tea and coffee, tv etc(not all channels work, but who cares!) Bathroom with a bath and a shower. Bed was large, and very comfortable. Room was lovely and warm. Location is brilliant, close to the station and all amenities. Breakfast was excellent, with a large choice hot and cold. Fresh coffee- help yourself. This is a really great place to stay, and excellent value for money. Thank you

Just had a 2 night stay. We have known this hotel for many years, some good some bad, now I think they've got it back to good. Staff very friendly and helpful. Had breakfast and an evening meal both excellent and bar prices very reasonable. Will be visiting again

Clean and spacious rooms, nice and polite service, very atmospheric pub in the very center of the town.

My partner and I popped in for a drink on New Year's Day after a walk. Not many places were open. As we went to walk through the door , a young woman was smoking in the doorway and shouted over to a friend/colleague "Why are they all coming in here?!" In an exasperated tone. Charming!! Clearly within earshot as we walked past and she wanted us to hear. Not the warmest of welcomes for us, New to Selby and looking for friendly pitstop. The same girl who had been smoking by the door way served us. It was busy in the pub with a good natured crowd. She was fairly neutral whilst serving us but certainly not as friendly as I would have expected. I asked if there were any spaces to sit down at tables and she gestured over to a right hand side panelled room. Once sat down, I felt a bit more relaxed and the drinks were nice. However, I would expect a warmer welcome and this girl clearly needs to understand positive customer.service in the hospitality industry as they pay your wages! I will have to think hard as it left an uneasy taste for me if I want to return, which is a shame as otherwise it was a nice atmosphere and seems like a good pub.

Veg very under cooked which was cold funny taste to turkey. Very upsetting for the price. Got the mince pies but NO coffees or tea at the end.

Great place good price on drinks and excellent staff

This is a review for the pub - I have never stayed here. I have eaten here numerous times...breakfast lunch and dinner times. I can recommend the small plates on their menu. They are great whether you're in a small group or a large group. Always friendly service and a nice atmosphere

Very good pub/Inn in the centre of Selby. Can't comment on accommodation, but visit regularly for breakfast. Brilliant breakfasts - always freshly cooked. Decent prices. It's definitely worth visiting for breakfast.

Location is good. Right next to the Abbey. However, the food was mediocre at best for the price and they forgot us until we had to mention that we had waited over half an hour for our food. Friendly pub, though, and dog friendly too.

Great stay at the George in Shelby. Friendly and welcoming service from the team. Good location for York which is approximately 20-30 mins away by car.

The staff was very welcoming, especially Diana with her uplifting mood constantly making sure we’re having a great stay. She was kind and polite. Brilliant customer service.
