Have been coming here for a while always had a lovely Sunday especially the Lemon Chicken which is actually in the online menu , Sadly we were told it had been taken off apart from the Beef the rest of the menu was not inspiring. I have just rung again today to enquire if the chicken will be on again lady said menus change most weeks I informed her that it’s been on for many weeks and if it’s advertising it on line then it’s misleading , She replied that it was on last Sunday, I asked her if we did book again could they tell me if it would be on the menu she thought so but didn’t sound convincing . Sadly if the menu stays the same doubt we will return , so I agree with previous comments that a very disappointing Menu now .

We were handed the Sample Restaurant Food Menu, as can be seen on-line. We looked at it, up and down and all came to the conclusion that it was pretty poor, none of us really fancying anything. I asked about the Thai Green Curry, noting that although £22.95, it did not contain any meat. I was told that some chicken could be added, presumably not cooked with the curry and at an even more inflated price. We were really struggling to find something to order. Eventually, we chose, but one of our number, in his mid 90s, was taking longer. The waitress was behind him making faces, both disrespectful and rude. We have been to The George many times over the years but never seen such a poor menu previously. We ordered a pint of lager, the waitress returned asking was it three pints. We clarified 'a pint of your cheapest lager' only to get a 330ml bottle and being told they don't have draught lager. We looked at the sweets: the cheapest were just shy of £10, exorbitant compared with most places, and decided to pass on these. Instead, we plumped for tea for four at £17.20. This was an extremely poor experience and I cannot see us returning. We paid the bill to a young waiter who was very polite and apologetic.

Restaurant/bar staff disorganised and impolite in terms of greeting restaurant arrivals and taking drinks orders. After being left waiting for 10 minutes in bar, had to get up again to ask for some service from group of three restaurant staff who seemed to be standing together not doing very much. They then responded quickly but the subsequent table service was amateurish. Food itself was unimpressive for the price e.g. chicken terrine starter was hard and tasteless. Will think twice before returning. Pity, as it is one of our local restaurants.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Considering the price, the meal was poor in flavour; it seems as though the chef thinks that all dishes are enhanced by cumin, and yet failed to mention it on the menu. Now I like cumin, but not in everything, and when we all discovered that each others’ dishes were cumin flavoured it became a standing joke. (To respond to an obvious reply from the restaurant; we are sure that some things on the menu won’t have contained it, we just didn’t have those starters or mains, and since there was no mention on the menu, we wouldn’t have known, so our comment stands). The service was barely adequate and considering the price was not a patch on other local restaurants we have been to, it just did not have the level of attention or finesse. More training is needed. We were unfortunate to be in the same room as a loutish man in a football shirt and his objectionable friend, their wives were lovely and apologised for the behaviour, but the restaurant staff did nothing other than avoid coming into the room and saying, after the family had left, that their behaviour is always bad! Hmmmm, so why were we put in the same room as them, in fact why are they allowed in the restaurant, and why didn’t we get an ex gratia discount by means of apology? Our family dressed up to go out to dinner on 23rd December, we generally do dress up to some extent, but are football shirts the type of dress The George aspires to in your expensive restaurant? If so then you deserve this review, if not then why were they permitted? By all means be inclusive, just recognise the impact that decision will have on trade. So for a £500+ bill for 6 people, it was pretty poor and 3* is very generous, so we won’t be bothering the George again. If we didn’t personally know two members of staff and live in the same village, we would have given it 2*. Everything mentioned is very fixable, let’s see if The George management decides to convince us all that they are fixing it. The new decor is really lovely.

What a find. We were advised that "The George" was the hostelry to visit whilst in Buckden (the other 2 did look dire). Helpful, friendly staff and warm enough to sit outside (late September). Excellent filter coffee served with Cream, complimentary biscuit and Sugar in a sealed mini Kilner Jar with spoon. Delightful features around the ground floor and a very elegant Gents Loo (signposted 'Boys") with a fabulous Print of a male Nude in the style of Herb Ritts. Hayling Seagoon

We were staying locally and our host suggested here for our evening meal. It was a Wednesday evening, so didn’t book and that was fine as there was one table with a single diner and another with three. The staff are friendly and the choice of menu was pleasing. We decided to have two ‘while you decide’ items of hummus and tapenade and squid with aioli - tasty. Then my other half had the Moroccan chicken - a huge portion, which was fine and enjoyed. I opted for the Sea Trout with pumpkin purée, caramelised cauliflower (delicious) and a seafood veloute. Very enjoyable. No room for desserts, but cappuccinos were pleasant. We had a glass of Argentinian Malbec and a Pinot Grigio from Romania which was delicious.

My little grandson had made me promise to have a pudding as it was my birthday and I told the staff that.......lo and behold, a fab plate with “Happy birthday “ in white chocolate, with strawberries and 2 wee truffles!! The only slight criticism (which was very minor) was that we were seated near to the swing doors into the kitchen which were obviously in constant use and a bit annoying for those of us facing them.

Great gin, beer, service - nice ambiance BUT food very disappointing. We both had squid to start - very small piece of squid with no taste! My husband had the steak which was good and well cooked - I had the Moroccan kebab with bacon on spiced couscous. The couscous had very little flavour and was solid - more like polenta! The tiny piece of bacon had been cooked to the point of inedible - the kebabs were pieces of pork which had welded themselves so firmly to the skewers I struggled to detach them - no sign of any spices or flavour. It has to be said the waiter was very attentive - offered me a sharper knife and then a replacement meal - I declined as it was too late by then - also the dessert (chocolate Marquise) was excellent. We were the first diners in the restaurant that evening

We normally always go to the Old Bridge hotel in Huntingdon but felt lately it has lost a bit of the personal touch, so were recommended to try The George at Buckden. We ate here for the first time on Friday night, welcomed very warmly by Alexandra and received great advice on the champagne and wines from Philip the bartender. Our food was gorgeous, the chicken and avocado with mango isn’t something I would normally have gone for but it was beautifully presented and tasted lovely. My salmon with fish cake was delicate and served with a bisque sauce which was great as sometimes dishes like that can be dry, not this one. My husband had the Moroccan pork which he really enjoyed. We don’t often eat dessert so had teas instead, all the waiting staff were attentive, polite and friendly giving us enough time to chat and enjoy the lovely food and ambience. We found great wines at competitive prices and came away having felt we had a top class meal for very good value, we didn’t find it expensive for the quality received. Thanks to all, especially Alexandra who has great customer service skills - we loved it and were very glad we tried here.

I have eaten lunch and dinner at the George over the years with mixed results. A lovely old hotel but the bar area lacks something, the staff are rather formal and on one occasion although not very busy we were given a table tucked in a corner by a busy doorway. Why do they do that, why not give the people who have honored them by coming to the restaurant a decent table? A big bugbear of mine. Another time when we were with friends for a special occasion a similar thing happened we were given a table ina corner next to a very large and noisy party in a very chilly conservatory area.

My wife and I booked a week in advance for a major birthday celebration meal. Arrived to an empty restaurant and shown to a table that was effecitvely in a passageway to where a private party was going on. We asked for a table away from the through-traffic and were shown to a table right next to the open door to hotel reception. Draughty and the table wobbled. We asked for any one of the many other empty tables but were told they were reserved, and that we "couldn't pick and choose". The only other offer was a table inv the bar, so we left. We wrote to the manager, who in his reply explained that the otther tables were reserved for regular guests. Needless to say, we won't be finding out how often we need to spend £100+ to become a "regular guest" and be permitted to sit at an acceptable table!

I ate her with my mother and had a lovely three course Sunday lunch. £25 for three courses; each was very well presented and of a good size. The salmon for starter was hot and cold smoked, it is definitely the best salmon course that I have recently had.Main was roast sirloin of beef which was perfectly cooked and had an excellent Yorkshire pudding.I chose an almond tart with apricot compote and honey combe ice cream - it was delicious, the best dessert I have had in ages.

Actuall stayed in the hotel opposite but as it was totally crowded we opted for a quieter location. We weren''t disappointed. The staff were lovely and the food was excellent although we did complain that one of the dished was overcooked but is was no problem to replace. The ambience in the restaraunt was excellent even though I was dressed in jogging bottoms and a t-shirt!

Business lunch meeting, table booked. The menu was not very inspiring to any of us so a light menu was requested. This was produced with the request 'not to order any sandwiches'. I would have liked a sandwich, side salad and a portion of their renowned triple cooked chips. I had a bowl of soup instead. Last visit for me and I will not recommend or book for business meetings or pleasure with this attitude.

The service here is fantastic, polite and attentive without being overbearing. The building itself was lovely, very tastefully decorated with an elegant atmosphere. These things combined with the excellent choice and very high quality food made a really nice meal for my Mother's birthday. I will definitely be bring people back here and thoroughly recommend eating here to anyone.

We met my sister and her partner at The George for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday. We had never been there before but had a lovely surprise. The bar area and dining area were bright, the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was delightful. Looking forward to our second visit in the not too distant future.

Stopped here on the way back from a visit to the south coast. We saw a sign at the side of the road and thought we would give it a try. It is just 3 minutes from the motorway in a lovely high street. The George looked welcoming with plenty of parking. In the bar we had a choice of a light bite or a proper lunch which we opted for. Lovely bright dining room which soon filled up with lunching couples . Obviously a very popular place. The menu has plenty of choice and at 2 courses for £19 it was excellent value. The food was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were attentive but not intrusive. Great attention to detail and this was just lunch - would love to be able to try dinner .

took my partner and mum for sunday lunch having had good experiences before.Decided to not opt for traditional sunday lunch but the salmon fish cakes (which were three small balls) and tempura haddock and chunky chips with pea puree. The main was 10/10 and I am not easily pleased. It was delicious. My mum and partners lunches were equeally well received. We had attentive polite staff and a three course lunch for £25. What is there not to like.

We had a long table in the Orangery which I would thoroughly recomend. Looking forward to our next visit.

Felt it was time to return and see if the George was back on top. Hmmmm. First impressions not good. Walked in, got a drink at the bar and we were left alone for 20 minutes. Was the place busy ? No. Were staff about, yes, but not that interested in their customers. Eventually menu arrived and matters improved. The food is good. The table service efficient and friendly. But in comparison with the Plough at Bolnhurst it beats the George on customer service.Sorry George.

The George is all that is quintessentially British. Takes me back to a time when service and quality were the norm. The afternoon tea with cream and scones and ' high-tea' sandwiches was delightful. Age is irrelevant, I defy anyone not to be impressed by the ambience, the decor and the friendly attentive staff. Whether you want to read the newspaper with a coffee and a brandy or you are hungry and need something delicious in a great venue look no further.

We've lived in Buckden for a year and half. Thus we have eaten at the George several times as a special quick treat to ourselves. This past weekend was the best so far!!! The new service staff is much better and much more attentive to the guests. My wife and I felt like a king and queen and enjoyed 5 courses with the venison, the cheese platter, and the prosecco being the crown jewels of the evening.

decided to go for lunch here again after not being for a few years.Wasn't disappointed. Excellent well mannered well presented staff and a clean well presented classic contemporary restaurant and bar.Ordered smoked mackerel pate which I asked for a side order of toast with and my partner ordered crayfish. Both had turkey with traditional sides although the sides were much better than traditional and were very tasty. Desserts were orange raison and cinnamon sponge with ice cream. Whole meal delicious, filling and good value. Wont be leaving so long to go back.

Oh for a decent Lithuanian! Where do your staff learn to address besuited diners as 'guys' and 'gents'? Come on, if you aspire to be a decent restaurant, patronising and familiar terms with diners doesn't work. And one question whether it's all right is enough, two in two minutes is an intrusion.

The George Hotel at Buckden has been one of the "Go to" places for a decent Sunday lunch for several years. We revisited today after several months away and (apparently) a change of Chef.I'm sorry to say that the signs of a great place beginning to slide downhill are all there - the staff seems to feature a lot of new faces, and I sensed that the waiting team might be a member or two light. What was surprising was that the standard of the food offering had run so far downhill. Six months ago I would have awarded for George at least 4 out of five, and on a very good day I would give it 41/2 out of five. Today I struggled to give it 3 out of 5, and frankly, if I had given it 21/2 out of 5 that might have been a fairer rating. The problem lies mainly with the main courses. My wife was served a very small portion of overcooked breadcrumbed fish with some acceptable vegetables. I had Roast Beef, but it was tough, the quantity was tiny, the gravy (or "jus" if you want to be posh) was insufficient, and there was none at all on the vast Yorkshire Pudding. We looked around and we saw some very dried out dishes being served. This is definitely nowhere near the impeccable standards that The George used to have, and , I find myself astonished to say, what we had served up was below an acceptable professional standard.I will say that our desserts were good and of the standard we have come to expect from The George, but that does not excuse the extremely poor quality of the main course. As always the cleanliness and ambience was good, and the staff were OK. But the main courses were today way below that of the pub grub you get at most village pubs. But what a surprise to see such a previously glorious place apparently on the slippery downward slope. All the signs are there of a change of kitchen regime, and that the change has not worked

We have been to The George to eat quite a few times now and the food has always remained at a very good standard, the surroundings are always very welcoming and easy on the eye but the service has always been a little less tentative and questionable than you would expect from a good quality establishment. We went on this occasion for "afternoon tea" which was lovely, good selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones for a very reasonable price.Food came in a relatively good space of time - but it was the amount of time taken from after we had finished to when they came to collect the plates which was questionable. It's almost become a 'thing' with this restaurant that they are never in a hurry to serve you - which to an extent can be a positive aspect because you are not feeling rushed but there is a very thin line between 'not being in a hurry' and a complete standstill which some people would find difficult to judge. I can see why people do get agitated with the speed of service and certainly friends, colleagues and other trip advisor members do question the level of service but to me its something that over time we have become used to - our theory is ... if we have a spare few hours for lunch and we are not in a hurry then yes pop to The George ... BUT .... If you need to eat lunch and be gone within an hour then best consider other possible options. Overall though - I will definitely go back because I really like this place

My friends asked me what I would like to do for my birthday, as we normally go out for a meal, but this year I fancied doing something different.. And thought afternoon tea would be really nice, there are a few places that do this in our area, and the the George at Buckden was suggested and I said yes straight away that would be lovely!! We all thought so and after the booking was confirmed for 8 of us at 3.30pm 25th July the day after my birthday, we were all really looking forward to it. My friend rung an hour before to confirm and was told yes that's fine see you soon. So when we arrived at the time and went in the restaurant, we were all surprised to find nobody was expecting us...They made up a table quick in the conservatory, and we waited and we waited.... Finally after my friend asked a waitress they came through asking us if we wanted tea or coffee, we all wanted tea and then about 6massive tea pots came out, they were just plonked down by sullen looking waitresses, when I say plonked down 3 of my friends nearly got scalded as the tea was slopping out.. Then we waited for ages and ages.... We were all hungry and at this point I was thinking this is my birthday treat what is happening here.... After being reminded we were still here, they finally came out with 4 very large cake stands, but there clearly wasn't room for them on the table with so many teapots... so we moved bits around for them, but one waitress couldn't wait and put hers down knocking a glass of tonic water all over my friend, at this point I asked her ' I can see you haven't done this before" her reply was yes I have.... So I said " it doesn't look like it" The afternoon tea itself was nice but not amazing,, the scones were a little dry...The service spoilt my birthday treat , if it hadn't been my birthday treat we certainly would of been making a BIG COMPLAINT on the day, everybody felt for me, I came home with my lovely presents and cards feeling flat as I can honestly say that was my worst birthday experience ever, we tried to laugh it off and faulty towers sprung to mind.. But this is the George at Buckden with rosettes my son is in this industry and is absolutely appalled at this standard, I have been a few times over the years for lunch and it has been beautiful. So what has gone wrong? This is the first time I have ever written on trip advisor .. I will be expecting a reply.....

This was a return visit for afternoon tea following a rather disappointing experience a few months ago. What a difference this time though. The tea selection has been changed in the intervening time and when our tiered plates were brought outside to where we sat in the lovely sunny area at the front of the hotel, there were murmers of interest from all the surrounding tables. Top marks for presentation then.We started with our finger sandwiches, cheese and pickle and the creamiest egg mayonnaise you could ever wish for. Ham and salmon were also available but we asked for a vegetarian option.Choosing where to begin with the cakes was difficult. There were bite sized scones, a sugar pink filled macaroon, small plain cake topped with a little marzipan, chocolate mousse slice, a small fruit jelly. My companion and I compared our preferences as we ate. Neither of us rated the scones as our favourite, primarily I think because the recipe is more cake like in texture than a traditional scone and we didn't like the sweetish baste topping but the accompanying generous globe of thick cream and tangy home made blackcurrant jam was superb. I particularly enjoyed the macaroon but both of gave top marks to the mango (and possibly passion fruit?) jelly. This was truly delicious and complemented by the creamy topping and crunchy crumbled topping.Combined with an enormous pot of tea, refilled by our attentive waitress, and the beautiful surroundings we came away with a feeling of having had a lovely afternoon out and a determination to repeat the experience again in the near future. Thank you to all the staff there too.

Ordered 1 large glass of sauvignon blanc 1 beer and some crisps. Asked for the receipt and the wine was £9.00. So expensive. As we left nobody even said goodbye even though a manager was plumping up the chair's as we left the hotel. Not good. In the reviewI Didn't stay here but don't know how to change it.
