After an hour and a half journey we came across this delightful public house very warm atmosphere and welcome although there was only a small menu we all were catered for adequately in these days of pubs closing every day it’s great to see that this little gem is still surviving ! .

Whilst travelling in the Peak District my partner and I came across The George at Alstonefield .Although the weather was atrocious, we received a warm welcome. We decided on the roast beef lunch followed by a mouthwatering dessert. The pub was a lovely experience, a great atmosphere, although the staff were very busy they still found time to be friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We can certainly recommend a visit, we will definitely be making a return.

This pub is not closed as stated on Trip Advisor. Visited at lunchtime with a group of friends. 3 good ales on tap. All good! The very friendly service was excellent. We had a bit of a problem near the end of our stay and the manager went above and beyond to sort it out for us. Can’t thank him enough. The pub itself has a good feel. The garden is brilliant and the surrounding village is utterly peaceful. I wholeheartedly recommend it. Worth a detour!

The George is most definitely not closed as it says here and is a cute pub in an idyllic location in the Peak District. I believe it used to be a gastropub but don’t expect that now - it is a pie and a pint kind of place. The menu is small with very traditional pub food (scampi and chips, pie and chips etc). A couple of beers on tap and small selection of wines and spirits. The food is very good and reasonably priced. So if you’re looking for some decent pub grub then this is the place, but definitely don’t expect 5* service or a gastro menu, which it may have been in the past.

I so wanted to love this place. I drove for an hour to get here. I hoped the slick marketing would reflect the reality. I even broke my "always check the reviews before you go" rule. But alas it was not meant to be me and The George 4ever. The place was very cold and the empty dining room had a bit of pre funeral feel so it wasn't a great start. We were left for 15 mins to read the menu. I was told "not today" when I enquired about non alcoholic drinks - maybe they had had a run on them the previous day ? , but as the sweet but slightly disinterested young women that served us didn't seem have any further suggestions I stuck with the water. Sunday lunch was served , 3 courses. Starters were pleasant enough. The main had all the required elements , the beef was quite tasty but the knife provided had little in the way of cutting ability. The cauliflower cheese was excellent as was the carrot. The plate was cold and and the food wasn't really hot enough . No further drinks were suggested so we choose a pudding - Apple and Blackberry crumble. I did ask about what it entailed but as there was some uncertainty about it - I didn't press the point. If the serving staff aren't sure then that's the chefs issue , and not their fault. What was delivered was a teaspoon of cold compote , a granola biscuit , quite hard , and a very large scoop of sweet ice cream. Not crumble really then and not quite what I had in mind on a cold October lunchtime. Further investigations revealed it was probably part of the tasting menu - it had the size and "fun" factor. Nevermind , a coffee warmed me up slightly. It was all a bit gloomy and nobody seemed to be eating and enjoying the experience with any gusto. We paid our 12% service charge and if I had been feeling it a bit more I might have mentioned the concerns but to be honest , from the noises/music coming from the kitchen it all sounded very jolly in there but this didn't seem to spill over into the restaurant so I felt a bit left out. I probably won't come back. The food produced is very insta - worthy but not quite there in real life. I see that the owner runs a small sideline in slightly sarcastic defensive responses to bad reviews and its great that he's so passionate about defending his business but if it were me , I would be a bit concerned about the numbers - the terrible , poor and average reviews are really quite high , especially if you compare these numbers against the establishments that they guest chef with. Maybe some of the points these reviews make are relevant and shouldn't be dismissed . I think if someone takes the time to leave a review maybe they just don't want the confrontation and are disappointed with the experience. But I guess sometimes the proof really is in the pudding...........

We booked a table at the George for lunch today and was pleasantly surprised by the selection of interesting dishes and that there was a tasting menu available at lunchtimes. We enjoyed an 8 course meal of incredibly delicious and beautifully presented food. The rustic...

This place is a little gem. Every dish on the tasting menu was a taste sensation. We paid extra for the fish dish which was crab in a sweet corn sauce and it was well worth it. Having been to a similar establishment down south...

Delicious courses and lovely ambience. Good sized portions unlike many others. Good selection of wines in variety and price. Only slight negative is lack of on site parking.

Disappointing experience in our visit today. Ate at Ego with my partner, my son and his girlfriend. We are local so eat here quite often. My partner ordered Lamb Kleftiko, which is a dish served in a terracotta dish, wrapped in brown paper. It arrived extremely hot, far too hot to eat or do anything with. The food was difficult to eat as it was surrounded by the brown paper. The vegetables were very scarce and we felt it was poor value at £21.95. In hindsight we should have sent the dish back as it wasn't really worth the money. We did complain to two members of staff, one who was pretty indifferent and half heartedly asked if my partner wanted to order something else and again to a gentleman who told us that they have no control over the menu and that it's down to head office who design the menu. We like Ego but will think carefully before visiting again as I value for money isn't what we got today.

Really nice takeaway. We had beef curry, chicken with ginger and spring onion, crispy shredded beef and chicken satay. Free prawn crackers. All gorgeous and not swamped in sauce. Delivery man was lovely too.

We really enjoy visiting Den Engel after new owners took over a couple of years ago. There is a wider selection of drinks and the bar has had a wonderful make over which looks fantastic. We particularly enjoy sitting outside during warmer weather. Most of the staff and the manager are very welcoming. We did try to visit one evening after a meal in a local restaurant but were told under 18s are not allowed after 8pm. Fair enough, we didn't realise, but the member of staff was very abrupt when telling us (asking our 14 year old for ID when she could have just said she wasn't allowed in), but maybe she'd just had a bad shift?

A charming and cozy little pub that feels refreshingly different from the typical Greene King franchise. The bar staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, engaging in delightful conversation that added a personal touch to our visit. The food was excellent – we tried the sharing platters and were pleasantly surprised by the generous portions and great value. The pub’s Christmas decorations were beautifully done, creating a warm and festive atmosphere that made our experience even more enjoyable. This is easily one of the best Greene King locations we’ve visited locally, and we’ll definitely be returning!
