We visited this pub for a family lunch and we were not disappointed with the food which was freshly prepared. The bar staff were cold and not interested in us, and the drinks expensive. The bar is a separate business to the food, therefore two bills. The chef was extremely helpful, and the food was very good. We would return for the food as it was traditional pub food and very reasonably priced, but the bar staff need to realise they are in the hospitality business therefore need to show some interest in their customers.

Walked in, no greeting. Approached the woman at the end of the bar who said “ he’s just setting up” After being sat at a table we were forgotten about, no menus. After 20 minutes we had to go to the bar to get them where the staff member, who was drinking wine at the bar, admitted she’d forgotten about us. She also gave us the wrong wine, which was rectified. Food was good but service slow and an adjacent dirty table left uncleared for a considerable time, although said staff member seen chatting at the bar sipping wine again. We asked for the bill and she asked “ cash or card?” When I said can I see a bill she looked bewildered. She explained the till doesn’t do it and she asked me to pay one amount for drinks another for food. When I said I’d like to check a bill, she pointed to the menu and told me to ‘work it out’ I told her I was surprised by her attitude and she replied “ you came in with an attitude” as we left she was bad mouthing us loudly to the other customers, while the owner stood there open mouthed. Such a shame she let the place down. A simple bit of arithmetic and an apology goes a long way.

A nice little old fashioned pub with good quality food which tends towards the more traditional pub fare. Abbot ale seemed well kept but that was the only beer I tried. Some other reviewers have said they got a bit of a frosty welcome. I certainly wasn't greeted like a long lost friend at the bar, but the service was perfectly polite. The man who served us the food from the kitchen was friendly and helpful. It certainly seems to be a locals pub with a low key welcome, but there's nothing wrong with that - I think nowadays too many people expect a sort of gushing Americanised welcome in pubs along the lines of 'Hi my name is Marty, I'll be your waiter for this evening, our specials today are...' etc etc and expect to be interrupted every five minutes with 'is everything ok with your meals guys? Enjoy!' etc. Traditional British pubs like this are a vanishing breed and we should cherish them!

If your thing is a traditional Sunday lunch this is wonderful pub to enjoy one. The dishes of fabulously, perfectly cooked fresh vegetables were the best I have had out in years. Meat was succulent and tasty. The desserts were really nice too and good value. Our wine was nicely chilled and very pleasant. Friendly lady at the bar and good table service to go with meal. We will certainly be returning in a few weeks.

I was doing a survey for a possible ramble between Sawbridgeworth and Bishops Stortford . The George is only just off the route, so an ideal lunch venue. Luckily I arrived a few minutes before the party of 60 (!!) was due. They quickly made up my choice of sandwich (Cumberland sausage and onions) and brought mustard on the side. They even managed to sort me a coffee. I got rather confused with paying so I'm grateful for their understanding with that too! Highly recommended, shame I don't live locally.

Went for roast dinner. Was awful wish had stayed home with a microwave meal. Pork was chewy. Veg was like concrete. Beef way over cooked. Yorkshires were soggy. The best bit was the horseradish which was ok ish. £60 including drinks. Was ready to say how bad it was but now one asked. Paid and left a certainty we’ll never return. Hopefully was an off day

Went to The George in Little Hallingbury Essex. A small a qaint little pub, we were welcomed by Sarah who handle the bar and meal orders. As it was Sunday had the roast which was both ample and well present. Another yorkshire pudding may have been nice but not essential. Their ice cream "Movenpick" with the desert was magnificent never had it before. The young lady who served us did not introduce herself, but was both pleasant and had a wonderful smile. As pub is very small with dining area essential you book in advance.

Popped in to The George randomly one evening . We live couple miles away and yet never visited before . However it was not a very welcoming pub ,the locals surrounding the bar made it very awkward to get to the bar to order a drink. When we did the landlord made no gesture or greeting whatsoever and also made us feel quite comfortable. We were advised no food is available other than a Sunday. Drink wise there was very limited selection of spirits .

We were desperate to find somewhere for lunch before the typical service closure window of 14:00. Fortunately we happened upon The George. All was quite when we parked up outside this charming period inn and I thought that (like its nearby neighbour) was closed. Thankfully, the door opened and we immediately were welcomed in by a very pleasant lady behind the bar. On being told we had made it in time for lunch, she brought us drinks and the menu. Although the menu is mostly comprised of traditional pub food, the difference is that it is all made on the premises. We met the chef/owner who was a charming unassuming man. He can certainly deliver good honest food that delights the palate. He also maintains the beer pumps to ensure they deliver excellent pints. Well done all round to the team at The George. We look forward to coming back.

A nice looking pub from the outside, it's clearly a locals only pub inside. Three or four locals stood at the small bar chatting with the barmaid and chef. We got our drinks and asked for the lunch menus. We were given a sheet with just sandwiches, so I ask if they were doing any hot food, to which the reply came “well what do you want?" When I asked what-do-you-have the chef shouted across the bar … “I can do you fish n chips, ham egg and chips, sausage and chips …” . You get the picture. We drank our drinks and left.

Dropped in for lunch by chance on 20th June '19; our SatNag (sic) pointed us to Little Hallingbury as the closest place offering food. A friendly welcome, a surprisingly large choice of menu for a small inn - I am not often spoiled for choice and it is unfortunate that we live too far away to go back for another go. The speciality sausages were a nice surprise and really good, as were the genuinely fresh vegetables. Good speed of service, all hot and perfectly cooked. Big thanks to the chef and all at the George, you gave us a very enjoyable break from our journey and it is really encouraging to see that a proper English village pub still exists here and there, bravo! However, we did not meet the landlord who appears to be less well favoured in some reviews... shame really, might have been fun. Now what we need is for mine host to give some vitriolic responses to the reviews, always entertaining...

Could be the perfact village pub, has so much going for it, the beer and food were good. We were advised to phone and book a table as it gets very busy, we did this and was told it was fully booked at 7 o'clock so we booked for 7.30. We arrived at the pub at 6 o'clock to find it closed! when it did open we were the only four people in the place! We asked the landlord why it was so quiet, he said he sometimes doesnt even open on Saturdays so cant understand why we couldnt have a table for 7 o'clock.Unfortunately the landlord was the only down side to this pub, he was turning custumers away when there were plenty of free tables. It left the atomospher cold and unwelcoming.

Myself and some family including an 8 month old baby tried to visit here for lunch today. We were barely out the car before we were shouted at across the car park not to bother putting the buggy up because children aren’t allowed. While I am all for an adult only pub I feel his attitude was very unwelcoming and rather rude. Coming over to us to talk to us directly in a more pleasant manner would have been a lot nicer! We have come here several times for a lovely home cooked Sunday lunch and have never been disappointed. So we decided to have our Christmas Day dinner here this year. We have been to other places over the last few years but the price here was a lot cheaper to some of the other places offering the same. We had a choice of starters and could of had different if we wanted to for the Main but went for the traditional turkey. Also the same went for desert. Like always the meal was very nice. It is not Bistro or fine dining but traditional home cooked food. Just cooked veg, proper roast potatoes. Nice moist turkey. It was a pleasant atmosphere and we had a good laugh with other diners. We all wet home satisfied and happy.

Went for Sunday lunch with my family and arrived to be very dissapointed. As a vegetarian I always look online at a menu before I visit just to be sure, I saw there was three vegetarian options online. When I arrived the lady asked me whether I wanted beef chicken or lamb and I asked whether they did a nut roast or something similar. The lady said I needed to call ahead to order this, this isn’t on the website nor was my grandad who booked the table made aware of this on the phone, I asked whether I could have one of the three veggie options from the online menu and the waitress said these wernt available on a Sunday so I asked what I could have and she looked at me with a blank expression... this was very awkward as I was with 6 other family members, I was made to feel how I felt visiting restaurants a few years ago when vegetarianism wasn’t that common, times have changed and vegan/vegetarian is now a very popular diet choice. The lady said she could do me a normal roast but without the meat so I agreed after being left with no other options, she came back two minutes later and told me the gravy wasn’t vegetarian, the potatoes were cooked in goose fat and the stuffing had meat in it. I ended up with a Yorkshire and a huge plate of peas....All my other family members who eat meat said their meals were average. This is such a shame as this restaurant used to be lovely! It seems to have gone very downhill and everything seems to be done on the cheap. My brother asked for an extra Yorkshire pudding and the women said sorry it’s only one per order. Toilets need a complete refurb too.

It's a shame the village pub is so poorly used. This is probably due to the really unfriendly owner who prefers an empty pub to treating people with respect and courtesy. Friday night and 3 people drinking at 9pm and chef told us to go elsewhere as he couldn't cook for a table of 5. Anywhere else cooks until at least 9.30pm on a Friday night. the way we were told was, quite frankly, rude. Little Hallingbury is a small friendly village, it's a shame the only pub, along with the owner, in this village isn't.

On our arrival the locals round the bar didn't even look up and that with the landlord's understated welcome made us wonder if we'd found Essex's version of the Slaughtered Lamb, (the comically hostile remote moorland hostelry in the cult film 'An American Werewolf in London')! However things got a lot better... For beer drinkers there was a choice of two ales from Greene King - not this contributor's favourite brewer, but the beer was well kept. In the two small dining salons off the bar you could choose from a standard pub grub menu. We both had whitebait which were delicious. Madam was very pleased with her cod - tender and moist within a crisp batter. I equally enjoyed a big precisely cooked and tasty rib eye steak rare as specified. Our only criticism was that our espresso coffees which filled our demitasses had too much water thus diluting what should be a flavour explosion covering little more than the bottom of the cup. This is I believe caused by pubs using automatic coffee machines which can't be adjusted. So... if you want good food and drink, and good value for money, but don't mind the feeling that it's a pity you turned up, here's the place!

I was staying nearby and booked a table for one on a busy Friday night. This was no problem and I was made to feel very welcome by the landlord. A good choice of food and some have different sized portions for different appetites. They do a selection of pies and specials, but I would say their main thing is their local butcher's sausages - you can have either 2 or 3, with mash or chips. There were quite a few varieties too. I had the pork, cheddar and bacon sausages with mash, peas and gravy, and I can honestly say they were one of the nicest sausages I have ever had. Popped in for lunch. Got the distinct impression you weren't welcome unless you are a local. Tried to sit at a table and got told it was reserved for the local people that were coming in soon. The chef was drinking beer at the bar - pretty unprofessional. Sausages were fortunately Churchgate Sausages (normally delicious), but although they were cooked were anemic save for a black stripe down either side. Baked beans and chips were very reminiscent of school dinners in the way that they were slightly overcooked with a dry texture. Normally I think you can't go wrong with a basic meal, but it was pretty uninspiring. Someone had a sandwich on the next table though that looked ok.

Our first visit but definitely not our last - very welcoming - and the food was excellent. Better than the normal pub fare, the Chef obviously cares about quality, quantity, presentation and customer satisfaction, ticks all the right boxes. Had to be good, there were so many locals having dinner. Menu changes with availability of produce, and thankfully no piped music, fresh flowers were a pleasant change and would have liked time to study the many local and ancient photos adorning the walls - could someone straighten them pls, I'm a bit of an old fusspot, but then would the place lose a little if it's charm? Excellent menu, something for everyone, including me - a wheat freer - pan fried my cod so that I could have fish and chips, ordered a small portion thankfully, can't imagine what a large portion looks like! Has a nice garden too, perhaps the sun will come out for our next visit...

The George was recommended to us by the proprietor of Greenways Lodge when we stayed there on Thursday 7th January 2016 - and what a good call!!! Great village pub with the low ceilings and beams, the small bar area serves a large array of drinks including beautifully kept real ales. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and then we get to the food! Despite a very good choice of food my girlfriend and I both decided to have gammon. In my 47 years I have never had such a large and thick piece of gammon. The gammon came with chips, onion rings and two fried eggs and was beautifully cooked. My girlfriend couldn't manage to finish her meal owing to the super portion size - in fact she left more gammon at the end of her meal than other lesser establishments would give you in the first place. The food was so nice we just had to have a dessert - even though neither of us knew where we were going to put it lol!!! My girlfriend had Lime, mango and coconut cheesecake and I had ginger and treacle sponge and custard. The desserts were every bit as good as the mains and the portions equally as generous - you'll be pleased to know that somehow we managed to finish our desserts!!! To the owners and staff at The George please don't change a thing. We live in Nottingham so don't get down to your area very often but the next time we're in your neck of the woods we will definitely be back and I've already recommended you to other people who I know are going to be travelling from nearby Stansted in the next few weeks.

We stayed over the road at Bonningtons Coach House, and most of their reviews mentioned the George as did our hosts when they phoned to ensure our arrival time. Everything we read was correct. The pub is quaint, beer good, service pleasant and the wholesome food just what we needed and expected. We have no idea why one of the reviewers had issues with the Landlord as we had no complaints in fact the opposite, but everyone can have a bad day so they must have visited at such a time.

This pub was recommend to us and we are glad it was! Lots of choice on the menu, staff were very friendly and helpful, service was quick and food was lovely! The only downfall to are trip to the pub was the mushroom starter. The menu stated bread mushrooms and they were deep fried which isn't my cup of tea. No other complaints. All other food was very tasty and good value for money. Would definitely recommend for a meal or just a quiet drink with friends and family!

A very small traditional pub serving excellent food. Chicken Mekhani was selected from the specials board and I was rewarded with a more than healthy portion served with warm naan, pilau rice and mango chutney. The chicken was of a high quality the spicing was tasty without being hot. I would highly recommend this dish. Abbot ale was on tap and one pint was not enough, good food and good beer! Their sausages come from our favourite supplier the Churchgate sausage makers based at Mayfield farm. The Mayfield Bakery supplies their bread, good ingredients sourced locally.Service was good and friendly, the atmosphere was good even though we were the only couple dining there were some regulars at the bar indulging in banter which was interesting to eavesdrop. I would say that due to the small size of the establishment and its car park it would be a good idea to book. Nice garden outside, Lavs were snugbut clean. A little gem of a traditional pub we enjoyed our visit.

The gentleman and the lady (I guess they are running the place) are simply the most impolite people I have ever come across. The two younger waitresses shuld be the only ones to have contact with the costumers. My advice is that the elderly couple shouldn't leave the kitchen. The food was OK, portions too big, but with the service like that I advise you to keep on driving towards Bishops Stortford there are a plenty good restaurants there.

I was present the evening the visitor from South Africa inserted herself into an otherwise friendly atmosphere. This lady arrived after a number of patrons had been ordering and discussing who was to pay and we're still being served. The lady in questioned yelled in a bullying tone at the young person behind the bar. There had been some friendly banter between the local group and my travelling companion regarding Rugby including South Africa. I am visiting from Australia. The lady then continued her aggression toward the young person behind the bar who was politely asking if a table was booked as this may be necessary (the dining facility being small) to which the lady remonstrated that she could see empty tables disregarding what bookings may have or have not been made. It was a vicious verbal attack on an inexperienced young member of the community. One of the patrons who was talking with me was then verballed with the lady introducing the fact that she was a women and South African. These facts were introduced by the women by herself and without prompt or justification. The host was polite when he returned to the bar and I think deserves some praise for not taking offence at what the lady was inferring.I was a visitor to the district and have no allegiance to the hotel. This lady was obviously in an argumentative mood and spoiling for a fight. There was no impoliteness or aggression from the staff or patrons aimed at this woman to incite her wrath.

Do not go near this restuarant. I was completely ignored for at least 10 minutes. I politely waited my turn. Men arriving after me were served???? I queried how to go abouy placing an order, Was told they were too busy, The restuarant was 3/4 empty! I was then degraded as a South African, by a ignoramus who probably has never been south of the equator! The owner , Andrew, arrived and again degraded me, asaking in a very nasty tone 'What is your problem????' When I tried to explain he grabbed the menu from me and told me to go elsewhere.Andrew has now claimed that 'it was all a misunderstanding!!! Completely untrue, he is a very nasty rude person.Do not go near his establishmnet!!!Yes you have guessed..... I am a woman who dared to go out for a meal whilst travelling on business.

Walked in here on the off chance, and from the initial reaction didn't think we'd be able to eat here as the barman said we should have booked a table. They kindly managed to squeeze us in though, where we were able to watch the pub fill up with precisely two more couples all night.Standard pub food in general, but the curry of the day is generally better than the normal stuff, and is recommended.

The pub has an outdoor seating area which we were able to take advantage of before and after dinner. Four of us ate at the pub and we all enjoyed the food (we all chose different dishes). They serve Estrella lager on tap which we all like, between us we also tried the red and white wine and shared a bottle of prosecco. The locals who were in on the Friday night we went were extremely friendly which made for a good atmosphere.

Called in whilst staying at local B and B whilst visiting family. Wonderful village location with decent ale and a friendly landlord. Didnt eat but saw food and it looked lovely. Low beams and small and friendly old fashioned boozer with lovely fireplace focal point. Was about 6 people in at 5.30pm when we arrived and by 6pm it was buzzing. Seemed to be a focal point for locals which is always a good sign

Visited recently with friends for a celebration meal. Several people tried to order food as advertised on the black board only to be told it was not available or there was not enough for everyone that wanted that meal. Bearing in mind this table had been booked at least 2 months in advance and that the rest of the pub was virtually empty, surely this shouldn't happen. I felt embarrassed for the people that had invited us. When food arrived it was very ordinary, no vegetables with any meal except tomato and mushroom. Service was good. Having seen rave reviews for this pub I can only say we were very disappointed on this occasion.

We arrived on a Friday night without a booking, and had a splendid pint before ascertaining that they were fully booked. The owner, who also is the chef, saw us and took pity on us and because it was early, allowed us to use a table that was reserved for later. We had the most delicious meal we had enjoyed for ages. Hickory smoked rump of pork.Mmmmm say no more. Go there.

Had lunch here today and was amazed at the portions, quality and price. I strongly recommend trying this independent establishment instead of the other chain pubs in the area. The food is honest and extremely tasty. Having the option for a smaller appetite is a god send especially with a parent who didn't want to much to eat. There is also a great choice of desserts if you can fit them in.Thanks for a lovely afternoon.

I can thoroughly recommend this Restaurant / Pub as we have been going there for a while now and it never disappoints. Midweek dining is a quiet pleasure of locally sourced food that is well cooked and nicely presented. It is all run with precision by Andrew the chief Elf, helped by lovely Elven ladies - who never bang their heads on the low beams. The Sunday lunches are like you always imagine your Mum would have made on her best days, with a reduced price "Smaller appetite" option for those who might need to be able to walk again, sometime that day. The place oozes 17th century charm, excellent guest beers and understated tradition until each December, when a festival of Christmas lights erupt to reveal its love of all things bright and baubly, all Reindeers decked and tall. You drive past it and smile - every time. This place doesn't disappoint during the rest of the year:- all around the walls and shelves are plenty of photos and nik-naks depicting "local things, for local people" which you can look at as the log fire crackles in the wood burner of the main bar. Summertime Cider and sausage festivals also make this a Morris-man's Valhalla.. Go there, and see for yourself.

Crossing the road from our b&b there it was...so very convenient for us. The space has lots of atmosphere and the "history" says that it was build circa 1640 and totally refurbish in 1994 keeping the ambiance like an old and traditional English village pub. We went at 07:15 PM to drink a bear in the bar (only 4 customers there) but the bartender(owner?) only gave us attention after we told him that we want to book a table for dinner... not a good start because the gentleman is the "face of the pub". Unlike him the younger staff were welcoming, friendly and very professional.Well priced menu and drinks ... well cooked food; our fish & chips was at 100%.Despite the first impression that was not the most pleasant one, a full range of beers, outside garden tables with smoking places, old wooden beams on the ceiling, comfortable seats, good food and cozy atmosphere makes The George a place to visit again.

I highly recommend this as a Sunday Lunch venue. Very good choice of roasts, all served with a lovely selection of yummy vegetables, including baby carrots ,runner beans and cauliflower cheese. This pub is almost my local ...I'm only 6 miles away. During the week, Andrew serves up a fantastic home cooked menu of pies, curries , and many, many sausages....Good staff, who all wear a polo shirt bearing the pub's logo...very nice. It's a cosy village pub. Lots of interesting people and things to look at on the walls. Try and be there for the Christmas lights!!

Having been recommended to this pub all I can say is avoid it if possible. Yes the portions are large but the quality is poor and the service bad. We went on a Saturday night and at 6.30 the place was empty . We should have realised why and left then but we stayed and regretted it .

Entered this attractive old pub for a meal booked for 7.30pm. It was quiet and there were half a dozen people around the tiny bar and the barman [owner?] appeared to be manoeuvring glasses. Despite looking over to us standing at the bar he ignored us for a couple of minutes before acknowledging our presence. When we explained why we were there he curtly told us that he had the booking marked for 7pm. Thinking there was a problem finding us a table I said we would go elsewhere. He said he had a table for us and showed us to it. I wanted to leave at this point but was persuaded to stay by the others in the group.Things improved when the polite young waitress dealt with us. We enjoyed large portions of the main course [maybe slightly overpriced] and even the friendly chef came to the table and spoke.Time to pay and the man with the personality bypass returned.Only one table [including ours] appeared to be taken in each of the two dining-rooms so shouldn't we have been welcomed initially?

friendly welcome. poor selection of beer for such a traditional and historic pub (only 2 real beers and 2 keg). Standing room in bar area other 2 rooms both empty but off-limits as they were dining areas. Didn't see anyone enter them in the 1 1/2 hours we were there. When we left tables were cleared - could've let some tables be used for actual paying customers rather than hoping for virtual/possible diners. Otherwise it's a friendly, quirky place - worth a stop if you're in the area. Didn't try the food (could've gone back second night) as it was too dull and unadventurous for our tastes, although others recommended the quality and quantity.

Lovely Pub. Outdoors has been recently upgraded and it shows. Food is currently Smash Burgers, which are great. Onion fries served alongside are a bit lacklustre. Good beers and pretty efficient staff. Will certainly go back. Only criticism is the number of young children who seem to have been left to entertain themselves. Not the pubs fault.

The pub was very busy when we arrived and extremely noisy. Happily we found a small area towards the back of the restaurant where a lovely gentleman named David was working. Welcoming people and taking orders. Such a gentleman. Calm, efficient, took the time to explain ways of payment. A noisy group of youngsters were spoken to quietly, immediate reduction in volume. Our food arrived surprisingly quickly considering how busy it was. Everything was hot, cooked well, and nicely presented, 2 drinks, fish and chips, ham, mushroom pizza plus side salad, £42, happy with that. And excellent service, thank you David x

Very disappointed!! We had a family meal booked here in November when we managed to get in contact with the pub (they never answer email's or the phone) After hearing the Chef had left. We was told that there was nothing they could do and wasn't anything to do with them! even though that it was a member of staff that took the booking and didn't even think about letting us know that they was no longer doing food!. Thankfully a local from the village has put us in contact with the chef and we have rearranged our family meal with him at a different location. Very poor management and bad experience!!

The bar here is a joke. The staff act like they are at a party for them. It's a bit awkward, really.
