Popped in after doing the Halloween trail, it’s ok typical village boozer really. You can spot the locals a mile off and the tv sport coverage is pretty poor (jumpy etc) but that said I got a drink and it was reasonably priced plus I used the car park all day for the trail so yeah not bad.

We’re moored close by so called before visiting to see what was going on that Friday night. Staff were really helpful on the phone and also when we visited. Local pub vibe with really friendly staff and patrons. Had some lovely food with my daughter and dog which arrived timely and was delicious. Nice ales (just two on offer, one amber and neck oil IPA) on pump. All made to feel welcome (did I say that already), few friendly dogs milling around. Overall would recommend. Especially for boaters passing through.

The homemade cheese and onion pie was very very nice, the pizza had plenty of toppings and very fresh. The lasagne was cooked perfectly. And the steak & Guinness stew was amazing, the best we’ve tasted. Would highly recommend and will definitely be going back. Good luck guys ☘️

Went in for a meal wish I hadn't the food took ages to come and when it did it was microwaved and cold in the middle but burnt on the outside sent it back waited and waited again in the end I walked out. Had to pay upfront so lost my money. Never again it has to be the worst place I've ever eaten how can it take 40 mins to warm up a bit of lasagna in a microwave and still get it wrong. Just awful.

Walked in with my girlfriend, sat at the bar waiting to be served for about 5 minutes, got completely ignored although one of the bartenders was busy. We stayed here whilst walking the Pennine Way, getting the bus service down from Burn Clough. We stayed overnight and found the rooms to be immaculate, well fitted out, and quiet. The chef was ill the night we stayed, so I cannot comment on the food, but the manager let us buy fish and chips from across the road to eat in the pub. The full English breakfast was served from 8 o'clock, and it was superb. Finally, the manager gave a lift when we had finished packing our bags in the morning. It seemed like nothing was too much trouble, and he wanted to make sure we had a pleasant stay.

I arrived wet and tired but soon had a decent pint in front of me and a short while later an absolutely superb steak and ale pie. I'd have liked to stay the night but they only have four rooms and they were fully booked. They suggested the Diggle Hotel and once a booking was made over the phone, the owner himself drove me up there, he could see I wasn't keen on walking another step with a 13kg backpack weighing me down.Full marks for service beyond the call of duty. He says he's happy to take Pennine Way walkers back up the hill to rejoin the trail if they're stopping overnight with him. Great chap!

I have been here a number of times over the past few months. Some occasions visiting for drinks and some for food. The drinks selection is great and prices for drinks are good. The food is actually on the cheap side compared to other nearby restaurants but it is NOT worth the money. When you look on the website, the picture of the food look AMAZING. But these pictures are very misleading and the food doesn’t look like the pictures at all!! I have eaten here a couple of times recently. The first time, I ordered a pizza and it was the worst I’ve ever tasted. The base tasted like it had been covered in ‘lazy garlic’ which overpowered the pizza completely and made it difficult to eat. Could taste the garlic for 2 days - and this was after brushing my teeth several times and using listerine. Anyway, a few weeks later I decided to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and decided to eat there again. I ordered a burger this time. The chips were fine (a little undercooked for my liking) but the burger wasn’t good at all. Cheap, greasy meat and thin patty. (Same size patty as McDonald’s but you only get one). No lettuce, burger sauce or gherkins on the burger either! So literally a bun, a thin cheap patty and a sliced tomato! Not good considering you can get something better at McDonald’s for half the price. I won’t be returning for food here. If they can get a basic pizza and burger wrong then they don’t deserve my custom. My biggest pet peeve is paying for food that I can cook better myself for half the price.

After an awesome walk in Dovestones we decided on Sunday lunch. We arrived as walk-in and it wasn't busy. Was cosy with a fireplace. Good baby change too. Staff were good although possibly mis informed regarding the food menu. The reason I say this, we were a party of 6 adults, 1 teen and a baby. And 3 dogs. We all wanted a Sunday lunch. But there was none. It was off for some reason. So we ordered off the regular menu. Starters were good. Mains, 6 X steak pie with minted garden peas and chips. Cheese and onion pie, mash and beans. Great comfort food on a rainy day. Now, the pie came.... Without crust.... No top, or bottom, no crust at all. So we asked, "is there meant to be a crust, maybe A lid like puff pastry". The waitress said she would ask the chef. Then returned and said no it doesn't come with crust... Isn't that what a pie is? Anyway, it was nice but not a pie. So we basically got pie filling. Oh also the minted garden peas were not, they were mushy peas, which were also good, but not what we ordered. The cheese and onion pie was really good and DID come with crust and looked like a pie. We decided not to order dessert.. In case the ice cream came as yogurt or something. To summarise, very helpful and friendly staff. Warm and nice food, but the kitchen needs to work on the menu and deliver what is typed. Or if they can't then communicate that to us so we can order something else.

Stopped by for a meal after attending Pots and Pans Remembrance Service. Had the soup which was excellent, very tasty. Actually it is probably the nicest soup I’ve had in a restaurant for a number of years. Cheese and onion pie suffered from the tin becoming too hot during cooking which curdled the cheese. Reason why pie often has a pastry base (this one didn’t) is to protect the cheese whilst cooking. Oh well, slight let down. Chips were lovely though. Roast beef dinner was ok, beef was slightly chewy but was asked to be cooked through and not pink. Chicken dinner was a single slice of chicken breast. Expected a half roast; breast and leg but clearly not. Roast potatoes were great, gravy was nice, veg was both tasty and well cooked. Just would have liked more meat. Service between courses took quite a while, nearly an hour.

Conveniently located for the Saddleworth Rushcart activities. Good bar with real ales that I liked. Large car park. Comfortable rooms at cheap prices. HOWEVER, the bar food was poor and breakfast was utterly substandard: coffee of low wuslity made a cup at a time for a family of coffee addicts; eggs poorly cooked; marmalate far too sweet, bread run out (!). Bathrooms poor, short of every requisite. WiFi very poor in the rooms; unusable. The landlady was well-intentioned and tried hard to be obliging but the place was too cheap to provide a better service. I wish them luck and may even go back; but they need some advice if they intend to keep the B&B budiness going.

After a very wet walk, we were looking for somewhere for Sunday lunch while in the area with our daughter and her other half. We found a couple of places which had been apparently completely taken over by Morris Dancers, and called The Gate Inn in the hope we might find a meal. The staff were helpful on the phone and assured us they were dog-friendly. When we arrived, there was a skip in the carpark, suggesting there is improvement work in progress - which, in fairness, is not before time, as the interior could do with some work. The menu was somewhat limited and it was a shame there was no Sunday Roast option, but we all ate well and the food was of good quality and fairly priced. The Gate Inn has great potential and the attentive staff will be the key. We wish them well as they develop the place further.

As frequent visitors to "the gate" in the past, went back today to try the menu under the new management. We won't be going back! Food very overpriced for what you get. Just under £10 for an adult cheeseburger which came with less chips than the children's burger, nothing else on the plate. Complained and it was taken away, my husband said it was supposed to be served with coleslaw and salad, it came back with just a few more chips on it. Asked where the rest of the meal was so after waiting the coleslaw and salad were brought out. The chips were inedible, soft white and not cooked, my grandson had the same chips on his meal and before we said anything he told us the chips were terrible. Adult scampi and chips looked like a cheap kids meal. Don't know how they can serve food like that and charge what they did for it. After complaining they knocked £6 off the meals.... £2 for 3 lots of chips!! Expensive afternoon, would have been better getting take away burgers from the pub BBQ in uppermill.

Cheese n Onion plated pie portion tasted ok. Served with skin on fries and beans. Not enough beans (spoonful) as in a small pot. Burger for Mrs. See pic. Burger patty ok and again served with skinny fries pot of slaw and side salad. Salad tired and slaw too risky. Burger meaty. They are Deffo making margins. ADVICE. Put food on a plain white plate, give good portions, don't serve tired or past it food. Wouldn't return as it is as for midweek lunch Old Bell does it's classics at a third less...

It's important that this review concentrates on eating and drinking separately from accommodation.Welcoming staff, really, really friendly pub who were fabulous. They and the locals who frequent the pub were incredibly friendly and as there was a live band playing, the pub was rammed. The band were superb. The food was excellent and well presented. I had the mixed grill. The accommodation!!The lights didn't work. We didn't notice this until we went to bed and so didn't tell the staff. We were going to sleep anyway so broadly irrelevant. The shower head on the bath didn't fit the holder so had a mind of its own. But most disappointing was the dirty carpet. Dust visible on the carpet and clearly not hoovered elsewhere for a while.Comfortable and clean beds and we slept well. Overall our experience was very very good due to the welcome and friendliness of the staff. The cleaner needs to be retrained and someone needs to fix the shower and electrics!!
