We have had fish from here a few times but tonight the fish was so thin and over cooked we nearly choked on it with surprise!!! Chips lovely , staff lovely but we cannot pay over £40 for fish that no one could eat! Really sad about it.Just chatting to friends and family and I told them about how bad the fish was and even the cat wouldn’t eat it and they told me to add it to the review!

The best fish and chips in Hull. In my opinion. We’ve tried lots of takeouts and this far the best!We come nearly every day and it’s really spot on. Andrea and the staff are really friendly, plus you can also eat in.👌

Every time i go there, they always forget something or get the order wrong. They never put salt and vinegar on your food, even if you ask which i find weird for a fish shop. They have forgotten my cans multiple times... Tarta sauce or my chips. They are very tight on there portions and well over priced for what it is.

Fish was lovely! Good portions 😊 just didn’t like the chips. Will order next time.

Called here many times but Friday evening will be the last, the fish so thin it must have been cut on a meat slicer!!!! After chewing through part of it and eating un cooked chips it went in the dustbin!!!!!

Have gone here for years because it’s the best around ( live in Beverley and call in on my way home from work ) but after Friday evening’s experience I won’t be returning. The fish was so thin and overcooked it was like eating cardboard. The chips undercooked and I ordered and paid for a large haddock and got a small one. It all went in the bin. I live in Beverley so I didn’t return it , I just won’t go again sadly

Always enjoyed FF. But tonight's, not so much. Large haddock, and scampi were over cooked and crunchy. If I hadn't ordered the fish, I'd have sworn it had sat there, since lunchtime. The fish itself seemed a bit 'slim'. The cheesychips, were a bit chatty, couple of green scraggy chips, amongst the stringy cheese. Might give FF a miss for awhile .

In y humble opinion the best fish&Chips in da hull

We've sadly been let down again tonight. We are regular customers but have previously had wrong orders, most weeks okay but tonight 2 out of our 4 meals were really a let down. One fish dippers and one fish were really thin, like cardboard, hardly any fish meat. Sorry but enough is enough, won't be going again. Such a shame.

Asked for a large fish and chips, it was a small a lot smaller than the 2 people who got served before me. No salt or vinegar on my fish and chips either.

For a change it was nice.happy Christmas 🎄 🙂

I always use funky fish. Fish is chunky and white and batter is cooked perfectly and I love the fact its skinless fish . Chips lovely too,not real greasy like other shops .definitely my favourite chip shop

Very small portions, first customer in on opening. Not good value for money.

Dripping in grease and well overcooked. First time ordering from here. Never again. Even the kids thought the chicken nuggets and the sausage the worst they had ever had. The chips were hard and dried out. All in all a disastrous experience.

Service was prompt and polite. Two large fish and chips were ordered and served fresh and promptly at a reasonable price. The whole process took no more than 7/8 minutes. Would recommend to anyone

Used to go here a lot. We have now sacked it off. We ordered a large fish large chips and two peas. Normally plenty for us. When I saw the size of the large fish I immediately ordered two patties as well. The disappointment did not end there. The fish when we ate it was so thin it might well have been a shaving rather than a fillet. Not only was it virtually non existent it was not very fresh. It has become a rip off.

Ordered a large fish and a large carton of peas to take out…. If that’s a large fish,I’d hate to see a small 🙄 Runny peas as a bonus 🙄 Charged me 7.60 for the experience…. Definitely Funky !

Totally tasteless, very surprised as normally very good, I think the fish was far too fresh

Normally very nice but today it was a poor experience. Very disorganised with the staff having little coordination of who needs to be served next, who is waiting etc. The normally large fish was tiny and they didn't pack the sausage I paid for!

Fish soggy with grease, the food tasted like it had been sat there all day, didn't allow a refund

Got Haddock and chips. I don't think it was Haddock, though. Completely the wrong texture and tasted different !

For a change from the fabulous haddock I tried the fish dippers. They are now my new favourite. Small strips of battered fish. Its a great fish shop

Visited between 8pm and 9pm Friday last and ordered Fish & Chips with Peas. I was asked what size fish I wanted and I saw the fryer take one out of the refrigerator, batter it and place it in the fryer. Brilliant I though, red hot fish freshly cooked. No No No!! Sneaky server loaded up a box with chips and a carton of peas and then took an already cooked fish, not from the hot places on top of the counter, but from somewhere underneath, and put it in my box. My fresh cooked fish I'd ordered I never saw again. It certainly was not the one I'd ordered when I opened the box at home. Why ask you if you want Fish freshly frying when they give you something old and overdone. I for one are disappointed with this tactic and Funky Fish should be careful, customers like me will not return.

Brought my daughter here to try her first ever pattie. The staff were lovely the food was delicious and my daughter asks to go there at least twice a week. Quality chippy!

I feel this chip shop has gone downhill in the last few months. I had ordered, fish and chips x2, one jumbo sausage and chips plus, peas. Got home, no jumbo sausage, small sausage. The chips were like hard sweets, awful chips. It looks like the chips where reheated from lunch time. I don’t think I go back again, not value for money.

Had the smallest fish ever was not much bigger than a fish goujon ..I would be embarrassed to charge the price just wish I had taken a picture

The fish and chips are great, the staff friendliness is great but they didn't rechecked the items what custumer paid for before handed to customers. Need to have a better system.

Absolutely shocking just wanted some cheesy chips but a man called Jacob and James threw eggs at the window on their bikes completely ruined my experience, patty butty and cheesy chips was decent though

Best fish and chips I've tasted

Used to be one of the best chippies in Hull and we would use it once or twice a week. We bought some fish n chips prior to going on holiday in the summer n had to throw it away it was so bad. Wanting to give the benefit of doubt thinking everyone has a bad day we tried it again some 2 weeks later, the food was slightly better but not much. We gave in this week and gave them one last try and it turned out to a a total waste of money. The fish was over cooked to the point where even the batter failed to protect the fish itself from turning brown. Such a shame its gone from the best to probably one of the worst. I'll keep an eye on the ratings and if It shows signs of improvement i'll be happy to give it another try but until then i'll continue to use Frydays in cottingham

I visit this place on the regular so it's about time I left a review. This is the best fish and chip shop in Hull without a doubt. They use sustainable line-caught Haddock from the Barents sea, which is known for its superior quality. Good to see a fish and chip shop taking sustainability and quality seriously. Fish is freshly fried when you walk in, and portion sizes are good but not excessive. The fish has always been of excellent quality when I've been in and the chips are fantastic too. Batter is golden, crispy and light – just the way it always should be. The patties are also some of the best I've tried and every fish and chops you order comes with a fresh portion of homemade tartare sauce (delicious!) Keep doing what you're doing. I spent a lot of time working with fish and chip shops for the national fish and chip awards so know good quality when I spot it.

Just got large fish and chips the fish was small were they get large from I don't know used to be really nice here right down hill very expensive , greed takes over alot of people when u ask for large fish should be large disappointing never again

Quality fish and chips, cooked to your personal preference. Not the quickest because they only cook the fish to order, but at least you know you're getting fresh every time. Highly recommended

Last few occasions have been really disappointing. The 'large' fish really was not large and the chips were so greasy were almost inedible. Husband picked it up on the way home from work and if he hadn't been so tired he would have driven back and complained.

Two lovely ladies serving an awesome haddock, chips and curry sauce. This was my first but, definitely not my last, visit to The Funky Fish.

I have been going regularly for quite a time and I can highly recommend. The food is cooked to order and is lovely.

Decided to visit after shopping locally. Wow what a mistake. Ordered and paid for our food and had an extremely long wait for such a small order. People coming in to be served without a mask despite a sign on the counter saying masks to be worn in the shop. When my partner queried this with the server she just laughed. Will definitely not be returning to a business that does not care about the safety of its customers. Food was nice but not worth the risk to our health. No wonder Hull is in tier 3.

Been in for my lunch sometimes always clean staff very friendly. The food is good but portions are a little on the small side.

I really love this place and will always call in when I'm passing. the home made patties either cheese or corned beef are delicious. The chips are just unbelievable! If you can find better chips than this anywhere on earth then please let me know,. Place is always clean and the staff are very efficient. A great chippy.

Me and my hubby are visiting this chippy at least once a week and every single time the fish and chips is to die for. We eat it as eat in and the service we are getting is really good. Really recommend x

Tried this fish shop as my regular chippy was closed, was disappointed with the fish, supposed to be a large but was very small, almost like a fish finger, to be honest would not go again, waste of money....

We use Funky Fish on a regular basis. Service is good and the food well cooked. There have been one or two mistakes made when the eatery is particularly busy, but the staff listen to any complaints and rectify them were necessary. Very satisfied.

I went there and paid for fish with 20£ note and I don't remember them giving me my change for about 14£ something even when I got home I checked in my bag I realised that I don't have my change I really don't know what happened.

A very good modern Hull fish & Chip shop with attentive friendly staff, quality food with the bonus of take away and a pleasant indoor seated eating area too. Wil definitely become a regular place to eat when heading into Hull on Beverley Road.

Fantastic chips fantastic atmosphere and fantastic people! Some of the best chips in Hull and fantastic value for money. Thoroughly enjoyed my food every time I have been and so has my daughter who is somewhat hard to please.

Honestly one of the best fish and chip shops in Hull. MSC certified haddock cooked fresh to order. You guys should go in for the National Fish and Chip Awards and help put Hull on the map.

Brilliant chippy, decent portions, lovely staff. My only issue is its slightly pricier than most other chippys in Hull. Big plus is the fact you can sit in for the same price as taking away 👍

Best fish Ive tasted. Prices are better then most. Plus you can sit in and eat. Plus you can have a pot of tea and free WiFi.
