Food is constantly at a high standard. Potatoes they use are of good quality, not the cheap, tasteless whites most restaurant's use . Fish is cooked to perfection every time, not overcooked, unlike every other chippy for miles around.

Disgusting food chips were dry cold and hard never going again stay away from that place

Best I've had so far. Been to alot of famous coastal towns know for there fish and chips and this place holds up against them.

This is a good place to enjoy fish & chips. The restaurant is comfortable and welcoming and the chippy is quick.

Greeted by a friendly man when entering, however the girl behind the till lacked general politeness. I’ve been coming here for a long time and was really disappointed with the food. Battered cod was very soggy. Hoping for better in the future

Not great. £1.80 for mushy peas when you have changed your containers to contain so much less is a bit of a rip off . Batter on the fish was soft and the fish was grey indicating it wasn't as fresh as it should have been. I've used you for years but have noticed quality is definitely not as good as it used to be. Sorry guys but you've lost me.

Nice enough place to eat, however we went in quite late so rhe fish wasn't very hot and it looked like it had been in the hot oven for a while. The batter was quite dry

The premises is small, but very clean and tidy. Greeted by friendly staff on entry, the menu was explained and gluten free options were described, we were able to ponder the choices before giving our order, which was cooked fresh, and served hot. Everyone enjoyed the food which was very tasty. Would certainly not hesitate to return.

We travelled all the way from Basildon to get their fish and chips so that in itself tells you how good their food is The staff are well friendly always go out their way to help and offer the best service I can’t recommend this restaurant enough please go visit them you won’t regret it

Tasty quick dinner. Good value. Situated at top of high Street. Was a quiet weekday evening when we went. Clean and good service.

My first and last visit,absolutely disgusting, chips were horrible, tasted of oil and the fish was awful, my wife and I agreed, the worst food we've ever had,will not be going back,AVOID! Unless you want to feel ill the following morning

We ate in the restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday and the food was at best average, the batter was oily, the chicken dried out with tough skin and the chips were Luke warm and limp. They don’t seem to know what temperature to have their oil at. We won’t be back.

Have used this place for the past two years but within the last couple of months this place has unfortunately gone downhill. Two or so months ago got takeaway for the family, got food back to the house and the chips were soggy and in some cases "rotten". Also just all the small bits that must collect at the bottom of the container they use, very disappointing. Decided to go back a few weeks later incase it was just a one off but that wasn't the case. Same again tonight, chips were brown, completely soggy and flavourless. Saveloy had rock hard skin and compleetly unedible as if it was sat under the hot lights for hours on end, the kids were very unhappy. Will sadly take my business elsewhere. Service from the staff is fine, though you don't often actually get salt and vinegar even when asked. Atmosphere is fine also, it's a chippy.

Sorry to have to give poor review....I called to place order at lunchtime..I called as thought food would be freshly cooked ( have had poor experience before)..picked up 10 mins later got home to find fish well overcooked and oily, and very old chips, gherkin also weird taste...couldnt take back as caring for elderly relative, so out of pocket £11.50....will never return sadly.

Usually very good but I got a take out today and it really was poor. I'm usually satisfied with a medium portion of chips but this time it was half the size and chips mediocre. And as fur the battered sausage. Well the batter was almost like a bit of leather. Will visit again but very poor this time I'm afraid.

The most consistent and excellent fish and chips in Maldon. Everything cooked to order ensuring perfection. A choice of other dishes for this not eating fish. Something for everyone. Got to try it. 😊👍

pretty poor tbh, everything was overdone. haddock was greasy and dry, even the saveloy was dry and over cooked i didn't even know that was possible. will not be returning

If you are looking for fish and chips in a good setting, with good value, excellent meals and friendly service then you will love the friendly fryer. Maldon is lucky to have such a place.

It was really nice and I enjoyed the time.

We ordered haddock, cod and scampi, 2 with chips, 1 with salad. All of the meals were cooked really well. The service was good, and the meals were all cooked fresh and arrived hot. Would definately return for another visit. Prices were reasonable too.

The cod and steak pie were nicely done but the chips were small and shrivelled.

2 stars is being generous, I guess they were close to closing as quite a bit of cleaning going on but still open, 2 girls serving helpful and friendly, the piece of cod was good as was the veggie burger but both spoilt by the use of old almost rancid fat, the chips were obviously all that was left, quickly packaged out of sight, they were old, cold and cooked in the same horrible fat, sorry but will not be returning.

The staff are lovely and very accommodating. They have free WiFi! In my humble opinion they have the best chip shop chips in the world! If you love a traditional old looking English restaurant, then this is the place to be!

Wanted to ask if we could sit in. Woman closed and locked the door on us. When we were waiting for takeaway the staff were too busy saying to eachother they weren't cooking anymore food rather than telling me directly. I got the hint and left.

Myself and my daughter get a takeaway from here once a week, as a treat. Chips are cooked perfectly, sausage not too greasy and fish is cooked in a lovely batter, crisp and always very hot and the service is great. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Worst chip shop in Maldon. We used to use this place due to convenience. It has always been average at best. We went there tonight for a take away, nothing has changed, over cooked horrible chips, old microwaved chicken breast, tastes very odd. Give it a miss .

Thin, dry, fish with unpleasant batter, chips okish, asked for salt & vinegar & got none. One of the worst fish & chips any of the family have had- bought 4 portions & all equally as bad

Just under £30 for fish & chips for me and the Mrs, rip off prices and the chips were about 2 hours old and dried out. Complained to the waitress but she didn’t really want to know. We won’t be going back 👎

5 people serving and one customer - me, got home with my paper bag to find the order totally wrong, drinks ordered were missing, pickled eggs replaced with onions, and child portions of chips, ..not impressed, not going back.

Back again. Still excellent fish and chips. Ready as ordered. Gluten free 6 days a week also. Will return.

Should definitely be a couple of letters "UN" inserted into the name of this - pretty bad - Fish and chip shop.I'll never return and recommend the same to others. Unless you like bad service and miserable surly staff who think they're doing you a favour letting you be their customer. They must have to fail an attitude test to work there.If you time it wrong, the food isn't marvellous either.Over the last couple of years I've given them 2 more chances as well. So it wasn't a one-off

Popped into Friendly Fryer tonight at 6 50pm placed our order and said we would be back in 10 mins to collect.On returning 7 mins late, I sat in their collection area and waited another 30 mins. Having given my name 3 times and my order once I was told they were just putting our order together. Sitting the other side of the glass divide I could hear and see the conversation when a member of staff was told our order had been sitting in the hot plate all that time. As you can imagine it was less than luke warm and the lettuce in the burger had even gone brown. Never again. Sadly on ringing to complain they were less than understanding or helpful. Terrible service.

Have used this fish and chip shop for years and they never disappoint. I ordered roe and chips and my friend had a battered sausage and chips. They were cooked to order and were delicious. The chips were cooked to perfection - nice, crisp and golden on the outside and soft in the middle. It was such a lovely lunchtime treat. Well done guys.

Lived in Maldon all my life and usually the food from here is great, however last night the chicken I ordered was black and rock hard on the outside...it took a great force to get into the 'meatier' bit which was dry and tasteless...not impressed at all....was my first takeout after lock down and will certainly be my last from this place!Waste of money, went straight in the bin! *angry face*

Really good fish and chips prepared and served by a friendly crew. The cod was skinless and the batter was perfectly cooked Chips were top notch. Perfect for lunch on a cycle ride.

We ate here on a rainy Thursday lunchtime in half term. We were with our grandchildren. The welcome from the server was warm and friendly. The restaurant was not too busy. The food, service and ambiance was good. We’ll be back.

The foods lovely and so are the staff, the only thing I will say is that thier a bit expensive and a bit tight with the chip portion sizes for thier pricing, other than that I cant fault them at all :)

Hi, this place is a little gem up the top of Maldon high street. Food is very good and the restaurant is a nice place to relax over traditional fish & chips or whatever you fancy. 12 out of 10. It's just nice.......

Chose to buy a takeaway having previously been here many times before. They were very busy and was queuing to be served when another customer came in and went straight to the till. I pointed out that there was a queue and the customer accepted and apologised. However, the girl on the till decided she was not happy with this. She took our order and then the other customers. We waited half an hour for our 2 portions of chips and 1 safely. She had purposefully held our order back. Also whilst waiting it was interesting to see how rude she was with her colleagues. A very unfortunate experience, she will lose the restaurant custom if her attitude is not addressed.

What a find, and what wonderful gluten free fish and chips.. beautiful batter and lovely flakey haddock... all tied together with a good helping of mushy peas... not the cheapest, but worth every penny folks.

Lovely food very friendly staff and good value for money

Have been here on several occasions and always had lovely food but this time the fish was flat not nice and flaky and so was the batter not nice at all really greasy tasted like fat was burnt and chips were soggy we won’t be back ... but the seagulls enjoyed it !!

Lovely chips but the fish was awful, over cooked it was crispy fish and burnt batter. So the stars are for the chips and the can of Coke.

Have been to this chip shop lots over the years. It used to be great. Recent visits chips have been dreadful. Reheated, Rock hard. Never will I go here again

I love this place! The quality of the fish is fantastic so fresh!chips are fluffy in the middle crispy on the outside! The selection of other options too is great the kids love the chicken nuggets and ribs and my veggie friend loves the veggie burger! Great service too and very reasonable price!

Scores 5 on a Monday but cashes in on Friday/ Saturday and turns down our custom ..... sore subject- still not put in a 0 star rating- soon will

Have eaten here several times before on an "eat-in" basis and went Friday as a family group.Once again the food was really good, hot and good-sized portions but for whatever reason the senior waitress was so "off" that it was as if customers simply weren't welcome ! (in fact the place was busy and several customers were turned away even though the reserved tables were not due to be used for at least an hour, not even invited to wait while current customers finished their meals)Hope it was simply an "off" day as It didn't inspire me to return and there are plenty of other good eateries in Maldon

Not overly impressed with the food. Our meals came with extremely generous portions of chips not enough fish etc. There was no salad on the side and the fish/sea basket were in my opinion a little over cooked. We ordered bitter which was served ice cold. I found it to be very expensive for what I would class as take away served on a plate. The waitress was very helpful and friendly though.

Just spent 45 minutes of my Friday night waiting for my order only to be told when I eventually got someone's attention that it had been sitting in the hot box for some considerable time. I was given the a refund for the chips. Which were a tiny portion of cold mess by the time I got them. When I queried whether they would be hot I was told they would be. They and the chicken were cold and dry and a £3.30 refund of a £24 order did not cut it.

Really friendly staff, quick service and fresh food. My only criticism was that the front of the restaurant was very hot, probably on account being next to the fryers.

Usually great but very disappointed tonight. The cod was over 50% batter. The fish was chewy and very hard work. Hopefully a blip as usually very nice.

Tasty fish and chips which we bought take away for a walk down the High Street. Found the portions to be good and the food well prepared and cooked. Would happily visit when in town again and we fancy some tasty chips

Long running popular fish and chip shop in Maldon. Take away or eat in. Have been going here for more than 20 years and never had cause for complaint. My wife and I enjoy eating in here on a quite week night. The fish and chips we have had is always cooked perfectly, the ribs meaty and flavoursome and the chicken never overcooked or dry. This is a table service restaurant, the staff have always been helpful and friendly. The WC clean and in good state of repair with hot water. Parking not too far away.

Disappointed. Chips were very small and looked and tasted like they were from the day before and just re-heated. The fish (cod) was very thin with a thin batter that wasn't very crispy. Will not use again

Went here for a Friday night dinner with friends. 3 of us had cod and chips and I had cod roe and chips. Everything was superbly cooked and probably the best that I have had in a long time. Would definitely use more if I lived closer. Great service and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended
