Just been in there asked for pie chips and gravy. And they tried putting the pie in a microwave. Might aswell go wetherspoons if you want soggy pies

First time visit and all was great

Really tasty fish and chips. Generous portions, great staff and a lovely dining room. The batter on the fish is crispy and fresh, and always cooked to perfection.

Chips shocking warmed up small portion

On a visit from Derby to a relative I came to this place for our tea. The fish, chips, peas and curry sauce were excellent, probably the best fish in batter I've had for sometime. We had a sit down service which was not fast but food was worth waiting for. Very fresh.

Very nice chippy to visit before a County match, kind service and good quality sausage, chips and gravy. Will visit again.

How good is The Friary? People were queueing outside when it was snowing, earlier this week. That's how good.

The fish is fried on demand and the chips and gravy are tasty. Looks very clean too.

Called in today for a small cone of chips....could count them in the tray!!! Poor value, wont be in again

I just thought that it was okay really, and the staff seemed quite tired, and indeed stressed so I didn’t feel that much better myself (I won’t blame humans for being human)… though it really didn’t help that there was a noisy, aggressive, and rude family in here — I was put off before I even ate but I also thought that the food itself was just okay — perhaps it’s better to takeaway than to eat in here if anything. Incidentally, the pie itself seemed unevenly cooked with some parts being hard, and some parts being soft — if I came back then I’d probably get a Holland's rather than a Greenhalgh's pie — how it looked here looks very different to how it’s advertised on the latter’s website — but who’s to blame? Well, don’t ask me

Good chips, superb toilets. Smart dining room.

Okay. Positives: always looks clean and impressive here. Always wanted to go in because of this. However, I ordered regular chips and some gravy. Went home, opened the chips, and the portion size was extremely small. I even asked the woman in the shop if it was enough for two people and she said yes. At other chippies you tend to have some left overs, but we were left hungry sadly. Also, I was the only one in the shop, and the service was still slow and not too warm. Maybe they were preparing for the county game fans, I’m not sure.

Woman waiter very rude, asked if we were on a budget when we asked for glass of tap water. I am outraged at this behaviour from a member of staff and quite frankly she should be sacked immediately.

Quite expensive for the portion size

Excellent food and service. The Jumbo cod slightly battered, was beautiful for my 93 year old mother who loved the fresh white cod and ate every bit of it, well recommended.

Frequent visitor before County midweek games. Dine in preferable for me. Cooked to order. News flash, now licensed! Highly recommended.

A great place to eat before the football, you can dine in the restaurant area or take away, the staff provide great service and they are always smiling.

Great place. Very good prices and very good quality. We had a family afternoon get together at a local park, which was 3 adults and 5 kids, and we were all fed for about £17. One of the best chippies in Stockport

Chips are amazing, but service was slow as we had to wait for fresh chips. However, the girl serving us kept us updated on progress and apologised for the delay. I find with food places nowadays that online orders are making places extremely busy, and they seem to take precedent over people in the place itself. However the food here is amazing and the girls who work there are always top class with service.

We were waiting in the shop, ages, food was less than average , jumbo cod tiny, think they gave us the wrong one !!!

One of the best chip shops in Stockport. Service is quick, staff are very helpful. Has wide array choice of food and drinks. There's also a seating area which can be accessed by disabled customers. Is well lit, spacious and can get busy on Stockport County Home football matches

Usually good food,but tonight,chips were burnt,dry and cold and the fish was very greasy, threw most of it away

I have never had a bad experience at the Friary, the food is always top nitch and the staff are always warm and friendly. I can highly recommend eating in as its always spotlessly clean and tidy. Always a very enjoyable visit.

Lovely match day chippy. Be prepared for a 20 minute wait (as it gets busy cos its so good) but its defo worth it!

If you haven't tried it give it a go, you'll enjoy.

Ive been in this chippy a couple of times before it changed owners and a couple since. Haddock was always advertised on the board but never available. But every time I've been in the service has been slow and the staff very stone faced. There always seems to be a complete lack of interaction from them. The chips are alright.

This has been my go-to chippy ever since I have lived in my current house and I have been consistently pleased with the quality of the food and speed of service. It can have quite a lot of people queueing on Fridays if you get there in time for the evening meal (around 5:00). Prices are on the high side but tend to remain the same for quite a long time and the service is generally worth it.

They do really good fish and chips. Rating 9/10 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Just been in after trying it twice and it being horrible and nothing has changed. I looked 2 see if the chips had got any better and they were terrible. All brown and crusty like they use the cheapest potatoes. It's a shame coz this was the best chippy in Stockport wen George had it.

Unreal chips perfectly cooked. The battered sausage was cooked to perfection with a perfect crispy batter. The curry sauce was perfectly flavoured and warm and was really nice. The price was right and would happily go back again.

Ordered steak pie and chips, both were stale beyond belief. Chips were probably fresh a day ago, I honestly could not eat them, disgusting. Could only eat the centre of the pie as the crust was too hard to cut through, had obviously been sitting there all day, will never visit again and would not recommend.

Absulte robbery,asked for meat and potato pie and chips,I got pie and 10 chips.order your chips separately or they will take the p#ss.

Had the most amazing experience here on the 5th of August me and my partner decided to have a bite to eat with our 3 children I met them there and they had already ordered but as soon as I had walked in I was greated with a lovely lady named Jackie and straight off the bat I was amazed by her amazing service it was on another level she was a real Ray of sunshine so attentive to every body she served and to us and our children iv never seen anybody like it the place should be proud to have somebody as lovely as her she deserves the world! But that was not the only thing as we where asking for our our bill we had our hearts touched as unbeknown to us a lovely couple paid for our entire bill we couldn't believe it and as to why we deserved it but we where touched in a way you will never know and we really wish we could have thanked you from bottom of our hearts I know who you where as I had open the door as you left thank you soo much you are true angels and have restored my faith in the goodness of people x

We decided to meet at the Friary on Castle Street Since last time we came the inside has all been refurbished to a high standard. I was early no problem me waiting at a table for 20 minutes. Large Cod, Chips and Peas. Two coffee's two bread and butter. All excellent. Will definitely be back Thanks once again Dickie 😀

Great fresh fish but very slow service, due to each order is taken slowly then cooked individually. Better to have a regular stock cooked and ready to serve as In old days.

The food was gorgeous! I had fish, chips and mushy peas and really enjoyed it! The staff were helpful and friendly too.

We phoned the week before and arranged for a table to be reserved for our party of ladies for mid afternoon. When we arrived our table was ready and waiting for us and there was plenty of napkins and cutlery available, The waitress promptly arrived and took our drink orders whilst we waited for another member of our group. After delivering the drinks to the table, she took our food orders and our fish, chips and peas arrived very promptly with little dishes of tartare sauce as an extra The fish was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and we hope to go back again with a larger group of ladies next time.

Been going for years lovely staff ive been twice this week thanks for keeping me full up 😄

When George had it this place was amazing. We went last week and dined in. The chips had a really funny smell , look and taste. ( the oil needed changing) its VERY VERY expensive to sit in and eat. Iv never been to a chippy as expensive as this 1. Guess were all paying for the renovations.

Having been a loyal customer for so long I have to say the quality of the food has really gone down , the chips are often brown and uneatable wasn’t sure if it was they were being left out to long but seems to be on most visits now a friend of mine who also visits regular has now stop going due to this real shame as it did use to be nice also very very slow service

Fresh fish and chips that easily match if not beat well established brands like Harry Ramsdens hidden on the small semi market of Castle Street, Edgeley. Close to Stockport Town centre and well worth a visit. Especially on a Friday on national fish and chips day! Keep British tradition alive!

Never ring up and place an order over the phone .. she said wait 5 mins ok no problem .. 15 mins later still no sign of my order being taken so I hung up .. poor service
