I went to the Fox on a Monday with friends for the monthly charity quiz. It was great fun and a really good atmosphere. Quiz was not too difficult and there were plenty of good raffle prizes. We will definitely be going back.

Came for the quiz - great laugh and unique questions! Drinks very reasonable, will definitely be back for their next one :)

I feel like place has so much potential especially in the summer with its lovely garden but the staff really let it down it feels like it’s being run by a group of teenagers. I overheard a conversation which I shouldn’t of between two members of staff talking about there weekend antics and it really put me off.Food was okay I’ve had worst but it wasn’t anything special and I probably would not return to eat. I will however come back for drinks and hope that recent comments and reviews kicks management into gear and reviews some issues people have raised.Also I complained about the toilet and I saw the waitress roll her eyes when she walked off at her colleague

It was a very average meal so I won’t be in a rush to return. We ordered skinny fries but got triple cooked ones which I felt were tasteless. The sorbet wasn’t presented very well at all and two of the scoops were too frozen and covered in ice particles. It was a disappointing trip, however I did like the Super Salad. The service started off well but then the waitress changed hands and we felt forgotten. After getting the bill no one came back to take payment so in the end we had to leave cash on the table and walk out. Maybe they were unstaffed.

It seems that the Manager Simon has been moved on to a new location, which is a great shame as since this has happened standards at the Fox have gone downhill rapidly. Sunday lunch today was the final straw for me, and unlikely I will return to eat there. Waited an eternity for the meals to arrive (40 mins), and when they did, not only did the roast turkey portion look like a child's serving, the whole meal was lukewarm. When asked by the waitress was everything OK, I pointed out the above, I was told this was the new menu the kitchen were getting used, and the portion sizes were correct! She offered to 're heat' the dinner, not offer a replacement, but due to the time we had already waited I declined. I do hope a new manager is in place soon, and gets the place back on track, but in the meantime I would suggest there are better places to eat in the locality.

Nice pub atmosphere. Soup inconsistent mine was thick and tasty my wife's a bit thin. Pate OK bread very strange.

This is a nice pub with interesting décor but the food and service has deteriorated since I was last here. We went as a group of 4 and was told there might be a delay in the food but not too long as a table of 12 had just ordered their food. It's not that they were particularly busy apart from this one table but we waited ages and my main course was cold. 2 of us decided to have a sweet which was a bad move because despite asking if there would be any delay we waited even longer and again mine was cold.

We like the Fox. The Sunday roasts are good and the service good too. Lots of dogs can be a bit daunting. The small lunches are pretty small! Coffee though is pretty rank. Tastes boiled and stale.

Find somewhere else until they get this sorted. The food took forever and wasn’t pretty mediocre! I would like to thank the barman and the off duty person who stepped in and tried to ammanfe the delay. They did there best but you can’t polish a **rd!

I am writing this review due to the ignorance of this hotels management who think by ignoring things it just goes away! Well it does not! You have ignored my feedback complaint on your website and ignored 2 phone call messages.On Sunday 27 October a table booked for 4 persons at1215.Both main course and deserts served cold. All returned for reheating. Yorkshire pudding then like cinders!Given forks for eating custard and no spoons either for tea and coffee. Staff advised me run out of spoons!!!Nothing like grown man eating pudding with his babys spoon!Complained and told "Thanks for the feedback" no apology no money back!If it cannot be worse rlarge raw shin bone on the flagstones by bar!!!!!Dreadful experience !

On Sunday 27 October 2019 I booked a table for 4 sitting at 1215.1/ - 3 out 4 main course dinners cold and returned for reheating. Yorkshire puddings returned as cinders! (We were not the only ones suffering from this).2/ - 2 out 4 deserts cold and returned for reheating.3/ - No spoons for any of our deserts nor for our coffee and tea!! Given forks to eat custard!! Was advised due to everyone in the pub having deserts they had run out of spoons! 4\ - On going to the bar, on the flagstones opposite was a large fresh and raw shin bone!!5/ - Requested to speak with manager but instead spoke with a man behind bar who when I advised him of the unbelievable dining experience I was politely told “Thankyou for your feedback”.We left the pub in total disbelief. No offer of an apology nor reimbursement. Never have I experienced such a disorganised pub. Their hygiene is also questionable.To add insult I filed a complaint on The Fox website, it was acknowledged and I am still awaiting a response! Today I rang, had to leave a message and still no response!The saving grace of this appalling pub was its hard working waitresses that lunchtime, who tried their best.Not recommended!

Popped into this pub for a lunch whilst doing a super walk in the lovely countryside that surrounds it. It’s a lovely looking pub, very welcoming with its fire and cosy tables. The staff are very friendly too.But the food was really average. To start with my hot chocolate was tepid at best. My friend and I both ordered the cheesy mushrooms which promised so much but was akin to a thick mushroom soup. I had the steak and ale pie which was fine for main, the mash potato felt microwaved and I couldn’t eat the cabbage it was so stringy it itched my throat. It was such a shame as the pub has so much potential but the food lets it down.It’s dog friendly though so that’s a bonus

This is a great stop-by whilst out enjoying the surrounding countryside. Having walked and built up a thirst and hunger, The Fox helped fill the void - a fine range of beers and ales combined with good-enough pub food.We ate and drank in the pub section as opposed to the restaurant and found it to be good food and pleasant service.

Being chaotic at home because of builders, we thought we would pop out for lunch. I was aware that this was a dog friendly pub, but when 2 large dogs, extremely dirty and wet, began barking because their owner was eating and was licking her plate, it is very off putting! Well behaved dogs are not a problem, but the barking was very annoying!Food was OK but I do hate a broken hard egg with my gammon!

Visited the Fox as part of a walk . it’s a nice old pub, decent selection of ales and bottles of fruity ciders. Pretty busy for a Monday lunchtime and the service was a bit slow as a result Went for the 2 course lunch deal.Best starter for ages. pâté duo , one course cut, one smooth, both delicious and served with their own well matched fruit sauces. If we had left at this point it would have been an “excellent “But no , there was the main course. Another fairly lengthy wait for steak and ale pie and steak sandwich The meat in my pie was gristly and the crust very salty. The steak sandwich was in-edible sadly. Way too tough to chew apparently ( and we have top quality teeth)When preparing meat you can tell when it’s mostly gristle... You shouldn’t serve food of that quality to paying customers

This place is a bit of an enigma, in many ways its a decent pub, especially in comparison with other nearby places. There's never any trouble, the location is fine with decent walking country right outside and decor is fine - if kind of a theme park take on what an old British pub looks like (the giant pubcos can't resist the formula look they give their pubs). But other factors detract. I visit quite often, though wouldn't call myself anything like a 'daily regular', so will try and give a balanced view of some of things I see.

More disappointing than anything. Our favourite pub we come a long way for but the food is rushed and if it’s not school dinner quality it’s just wrong and I’m not even a chef. Risotto crunchy and too much cheese and far too rich. Steak 2 for 3 supermarket quality. Chips potato boiled too long before fry. Pie shallow and thick sauce with out of the pack gravy. Also just generally rushed with parts cold. Sort it out guys please :)

Really disappointing. Half the menu was not available on a Saturday night at 7pm! Service slow and unresponsive and unapologetic. 3 out of 4 meals were cold. Given one glass of wine rather than more glasses and the bottle we had ordered. Shambles. It's a shame we don't have any really good food pubs within easy walking distance.

My family decided to spend the evening of my 50th birthday at this restaurant. I had not been before and was impressed with the decor and the atmosphere inside, which was neutral and calm, respectively. The layout was sufficiently spacious that there was space between the tables and we did not feel crammed in.

I am no chef but know how to prepare a simple Risotto even with seafood. Scollaps were chewy the risotto was too salty and still salty after the change. Rib starter was cold for each of the party members.

My mum met with two of her friends there today for lunch. They all ordered from the set menu. The food was fine but when they received the bill, they had been overcharged by £9. When they queried it they were told that the £9 was for the puddings. My mum pointed out that the puddings were part of the set menu. The stroppy waiter said that they should have ordered the puddings with the mains! What?? Never heard that one before! The waiter went and spoke to the manager/landlord and came back stating that he wasn’t happy but would refund the money. He then asked that next time they need to order the puddings with the mains....I don’t think there will be a next time

Popped in here on Saturday lunchtime with my partner for some lunch. We usually visit Croydon but fancied somewhere new and closer to home, the 2 pubs that serve food close to my partners house have gone downhill hence why we travel all the way to Croydon, however I see this place come up as a bus stop when travelling and so I decided we should make a visit here and so we did. Backstory over. Heard it had a disabled toilet and hence a disabled entrance so we headed out. Arrived to a nice bloke who held the door open for my partner who is in a wheelchair, already making us feel welcome. There was a cozy bar area, a dining area and a garden. We asked if we could eat in the cozy area which we could so we sat by the window. Had a look at the drinks menu, had some nice ales, my favourite, especially if they have something different which they did either on draught or in a bottle. If I remember correctly I had a chieftain ale and a jaipur with my meal and my partner had a bulmers and a lemon tonic with peach bitters with her meal. I had the wagyu beef burger with cheese, a salad with horseradish and some chips, my partner had the hunters chicken minus the cheese due to her dairy intolerance. Lovely meal, 2 drinks each, bill was about £42, very reasonable. My partner said the disabled toilet was very easy to access and she has a radar key so could access straight away but I believe one is available behind the bar. Very nice meal, awesome bar staff, settled up, hit the garden but to many wasps outside so went back inside and had a few more beers, a wheat beer I can't remember the name of but it was thornbridge brewery and a pint of Timothy Taylor landlord. We both recommend this pub and I also had an app downloaded for vintage Inn establishments and you can collect stamps on your visits if you have main meals. I totally forgot I had it and asked if it was too late to stamp my card electronically which technically it was but andy who was our go to guy at the bar allowed me to refund my meal, scan my QR code then charge me again. We was both very grateful for that and Andy was very polite and welcoming everytime we went to the bar. Due to our experience we would definitely return

Well if lunch is this good mid week! We’re coming back at the weekend. Undoubtedly one of the places I’ve eaten.

On Thursday 25 men desended on this establishment and found a couple of large tables in the garden. This was the night one of the members of our club was to be dancing in the MorrisMen Side, "The North Wood". We had not booked anything but were welcomed by the manager and staff who could not do enough for us. All but one ordered food and drink, from rack of lamb, through salads to mostly fish and chips. All was serve piping hot and with out too long of a wait. Most of the drinks were of the soft type but those lucky enough to be driven were tasting the local ales. My own chicken ceaser salad was fantastic but everyone though the food was excellent. We were all there from 18:30 to about 21:30 and have vowed to return. Thoroughly recommended. And by the way the Morris dancing was brill as well.

We have always enjoyed going for a Sunday walk and ending up at The Fox for a meal. However our latest trip proved to be a BIG mistake.

The service and food was amazing despite the rain showers. I had the lamb duo and my friend the mushroom risotto both were fantastic and very flavoursome. Will definitely be going back very soon.

We ate at The Fox last week, having eaten here many times before. It's in such a lovely area, and you can go for a short or long walk before or after your visit, with fields and rolling countryside right on the doorstep. There's even plenty of parking on site.

Had a lovely Sunday roast today. Beef was cooked perfectly. Bar staff were very friendly and welcoming. Had a lot fun. Thanks!

i have eaten at this place several times over the last few years when visiting friends who live nearby previously the food has been good and we have all been happy but our last visit was very disappointing.

Visited The Fox for Father’s Day and can honestly say we couldn’t fault it. From the moment I called to explain we’d had an emergency so was going to be late (lady called Heidi couldn’t have been more accommodating saving a table for us) to the service once we’d arrived, right through to the amazing food. Our roast was one of the best we’d had in a long time. Our day wasn’t going as planned and we were now running late for the cinema we’d booked, but nothing was too much trouble and one of the lovely waitresses fast tracked our desserts through for us so we could make a quick exit......and I’ve got to add the eton mess was delish! The restaurant done amazing on what was a busy day for them, so big thanks to Heidi and her team. Would recommend defo!

Awful food and service. The staff are an embarrassment to the company and need to be re-trained. Staff were shouting at each other use foul language. We were rushed and our mains were brought out before we had even finished our starter! The staff were rude and sarcastic and us being there was an inconvenience for them. This pub is a let down for the Vintage Inn brand.

I just popped in for a quick pint and a sandwich.

We visited the Fox as a family group of 5 plus a baby for a birthday lunch. We booked a table in advance as it is known to be busy. The interior of the restaurant is open and pleasant, the overall experience, however, was pretty poor. The wait for each course was long and whilst the starter was OK, the mains were definitely underwhelming when they arrived. The triple cooked chips appeared to be standard frozen french fries, the sea food risotto contained little sea food and was the consistency of overcooked rice pudding, finally some of the plates appeared to have been kept warm for some while. May be we were just unlucky as some of the plates that passed us looked great. But luck should not play a part in a restaurant experience. Finally, the staff, whilst friendly and helpful were clearly over stretched and embarrassed by the poor service from the kitchen. On two occasions trays of our food and drink were put down in such haste that part of their contents spilled onto the table and a guest or fell onto the floor.

We recently celebrated my daughters 40th birthday with lunch at The fox. The staff were amazing, allowed me to take her birthday cake in earlier and brought it out with lit candles after we had eaten our lunch. Our lunch was absolutely delicious, we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Only issue was with a pizza which had a burnt base, but the staff apologised and took it away. A fresh pizza was brought back quite quickly. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the ambience of the place was lovely and friendly. Will we go back again? YES YES YES. Will we recommend The Fox to others? YES YES YES and we have done so already. 5*

Good food and a very good selection of wines Apple Pie dessert was excellent! It is an attractive restaurant with a friendly atmosphere and very good service

Spent Christmas Day dining here with the family, never again. Complained directly to staff - rude response and tried to complain online - no response at all! Photo is Christmas Day desert for one of us! Laughable.

Had probably the worst burger I have ever had. the chips were also dry and the onion rings had little onion. It's a shame because this is in a great location and the staff are friendly.

It's a pleasant place for a drink in the bar (although usually nowhere left to sit and nowhere to hang your coat, that should be easy enough?) but we went for lunch last Monday and it was not good. Two piddly sea bass fillets that were totally dry and overcooked on cold vegetables. Stroppy waitress, doubt we'll eat here again.

My husband, daughter and I regularly visit the Fox, sometimes with the dog after a walk in Happy Valley, sometimes for a meal. We enjoy the friendly atmosphere and cosy surroundings. In winter, the fireplaces are lovely to sit near and the garden is very large with plenty of seating for warmer days.

Have been past on many occasions, thought must make a visit. Well wished we had’nt. Our host treid very hard, but could never make up on the food failings. So ordinary and very salty. We not be returning.

Went in here without muddy boots as we were walking after our meal and we don't have a dog. We went for a family Saturday lunch which was tasty and not rushed. This is a large pub with lots of seating areas and a massive outside area which I am sure will be very full in summer given it's location right next to Happy Valley. Staff were smiley and happy and helpful with seating and high chairs.

Booked table for 7pm. Food arrived an over an hour later. My meal was steak and ale pie. Unfortunately I couldnt find any! Also some items i asked for on the menu were not available. This is the second time this has happend. Avoid. Will not be visiting again. Also contacted Vintage Inns to complain and geuss what? No reply !

I booked a table for 8 with pre-ordered food yesterday for my walking group. Food arrived on the table as soon as we arrived, spot on time and was delicious. Service was incredible courteous and staff was amazing. We go to a lot of pubs as we walk every 2 weeks since 7 years and this was one of our favourite pub. The "dogs and muddy boots welcome" sign in front was heartwarming. Thank you for a lovely lunch!

Waited to get a table, which is fine, it’s a Sunday and the menu was pretty good. Eventually got a table, chose our food & went to the bar. We were met with “the kitchen is closed”. This is 5pm on a Sunday. Found out it is closed for about an hour. Hard to comprehend why a restaurant would shut their kitchen, and not be a lot more clear about it rather than let people wait around unknowingly. Poor.

We were there for my father in laws birthday dinner.

Service was very slow. Small lunch menu looked nice but some items out of stock. This seems to be a regular occurence. Our drinks were left on bar for about 20 mins. When we had the nerve to complain the person in charge was very aggressive and told us we were lucky to have a table. They need to up there game and realise customers are the people paying there wages and treat them with respect not contempt

Whole experience was terrible, always hopeful as local to me that it will improve, food, service awful. Lovely welcome until you start complaining.

We had prebooked for our group of 16 lunching on Monday this week, following our morning walk.

Had a nice lunch here today after a long walk.. Everyone enjoyed their food and said they would come again. The service was ok nothing special but not bad enough for us to moan just not very jolly staff!!

Went for a family meal and often frequent the Fox but not anymore after my experience on Saturday . We had booked a table and arrived on time at 12.30 after looking at the menus we ordered our food . Finally just after 1.10pm our starters arrived and we were one starter short , a member of staff who we think was the manager and had taken our order, came over and said we had only ordered 1 starter , when we had in fact ordered two, so we said ok well we will share then as we have already waited long enough, to which she rudely replied “ long enough ? You have waited 12 minutes for your starter which is the standard time “ we were actually taken aback at her attitude ! Firstly we had ordered well before 1pm as we had arrrived at 12.30 and did not take 30 mins to order so 12 mins it certainly was not ! She also never apologised for the fact we we short a starter as we ordered two lots of falafel and only got one ! Then to challenge us about the time it took to arrive ! She was very arrogant and rude and if I hadn’t have been with my family I would have walked out . It left us fuming that she was challenging us about length of time food took to arrive and lack of apology , the whole meal was ruined for us and we couldn’t wait to leave . It’s a shame as the pub is lovely and the food can be pretty good but because of this rude woman I won’t be back

Been here twice now for a Sunday roast and I really recommend it. I normally go to a lot pricier places in the area and I can honestly say they do a lot better than most ( nothing is as good as a home cooked roast) but the roast dinners here come pretty darn close.

Popped in tonight for a drink & a meal. New guy behind the bar, Simon. Was very welcoming & accommodating. Food was fresh & very tasty.

On the plus side it's a great location with excellent decor, the tables nicely spaced out, food is generously portioned, well cooked and good value.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. There were 6 of us for lunch we all had starters, mains and puds, all different and all nicely presented and tasted good. Our waitress Donna was particularly friendly and attentive and made our visit more pleasant. Very enjoyable and will go back very soon.

Had a small family meal (3 of us) while visiting a relative in the area and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the friendly and helpful staff. Good menu choices including vegetarian.

Popped in on a spare of the moment trip! And was presently surprised! The atmosphere was great and the food topped it all ! Great Food, price, company and atmosphere what more do you want ? Normally eat here in the evening but will definitely do lunch again

My wife and I took my mother and brother here for a fabulous Sunday lunch.

There are lovely walks around this area and we often go with friends and dogs to the fox after a long walk to eat. We go to have a drink there now and I would recommend this, however we have ceased to eat here . I guess it depends on what you are after, we had two very disappointing meals. They are not the same as previously , And the price compared to the offerings are no longer value for money or as good a quality as before ....- we prefer to eat elsewhere. But for a cold pint on a warm night... it meets a need.

Redecorated vintage pub with small garden to the side where you can sit in the sun. Peaceful location though can get busy. Ok range of bears and new menu with usual pub food. Fish and chips was good, salad less exciting and a bit ecpensive for what it was.

I ordered a burger which was totally over cooked and rated like rubber.

Met with some friends who had just landed from Australia and who wanted to visit a good English country pub to have a cold beer and a bite to eat. Having myself visited the Fox on and off for over 40 years I must say that the service last night was appalling. We sat close to the bar and could hear the staff being constantly berated rather loudly. When we first arrived there was one bar person. I went to buy some drinks and joined a long queue. The woman who was being served had to go out into the garden to ask her friend what it was she wanted to eat, leaving the bar person staring blankly into space until the woman came back. We all stood there waiting, with no option but to also stare into space! All very embarrassing. No apologies, no manners, no customer service and no extra staff! Such a shame. It was like a sitcom! Finally I was served by a member of staff who clearly didn't want to be there. The food arrived and was very nice, but oh, the staff. Such a shame they are not given any further support, maybe it would help them smile! Hence my low rating.The pub itself is so lovely but I won't be recommending it anytime soon.

I had a wonderful birthday meal at the Fox on a Monday evening. Food was hot and fresh and staff attentive.All of our group enjoyed the food and wine. Will definitely be coming back.

This pub has a good beer garden, fields all around and serves some good traditional British food, We visit this often and have never had a bad experience

We went on a really bad day pub was so packed had to wait nearly an hour in get served it's so small. Will have to go again when less busy

Not sure why we returned yet again, after previous horror-shows. Perhaps the location & pub itself - both lovely.

I used to go to this pub regularly for food and it was always good, I hadn’t been for a few years due to moving and decided whilst out with a friend to go for a roast dinner this evening.

Visited twice in one week. Both times with family. We were extemely impressed with the decor, it's hands down the most beautiful vintage, country house eatery i have ever seen. Especially when the fireplaces are lit it's perfect. Also great touch with being dog friendly given the location i.e. popular dog walking area.

4 of us popped into The Fox, at Old Coulsdon today for lunch as we live nearby. We have tried to love this pub restaurant since we moved into the area 35 years ago. It has been reasonably good in the past at different times but today outclassed even the most disappointing experiences we have had. We waited for an inordinately long time for our meal, and when it eventually arrived, 3 of the meals were cold, one was lukewarm. We sent 3 meals back, one of our party ploughed through his lukewarm meal. We were offered replacements, one decided enough was enough, one decided to have a toasted sandwich instead, and when it arrived it was inedible . We got a refund for two of the meals, and we decided than rather than bother to complain again, that the inedible toasted sandwich left on the plate would speak for itself. Vintage Inns, you really need to take this lovely venue in hand. What a waste of a beautiful building.

Popped in for lunch today with friends. Three of us opted for the fish & chips on the lighter menu. I asked for sweet potato fries instead of ‘fat chips’. The food arrived in reasonable time Tiny tiny portions - three fish goujons, and possibly 10 chips each, with cold mushy peas in a tiny pot. The waiter didn’t speak or offer any condiments - we had to go up to the bar and ask for them. And then when the bill came, I’d been charged 50p extra for the sweet potatoes. It would have been polite to mention that when we placed the order. £8.95 for a tiny meal is bad enough but £9.45 for the inconvenience of the kitchen staff swapping chips for sweet potato fries is absurd. We shan’t be eating there again

Last evening celebrated my birthday at a local pub on friday night with my family.

Last time we went to The Fox it was closed for refurbishment so we were keen to see what changes they had made. We were at the front of the pub by the log fire, so we didn't really notice any major changes. The Fritto Misto was very good and we really enjoyed it. We just hope that all their food lives up to this standard and they maintain high standards. Must say, we were surprised by the number of dogs in the pub, but they didn't seem to be causing any problems.

Group of 10 adults and two children for lunch. Of the adults 8 ordered roast dinners and with the exception of one meal, all the vegetables and roast potatoes were served COLD, not lukewarm but cold. The servers were very apologetic and immediately removed the discrepant items to the kitchen to remedy the situation. Whilst the problem was corrected it is inexcusable for such poor presentation, especially since the restaurant was not that busy.

Arriving at the pub a few minutes before our table booking, we headed to the bar to get a drink. The bar man was very friendly and checked whether Mum wanted ice in her drink (Mum's complaint is often that she gets ice added at other pubs) or whether I wanted a small, medium or large glass of wine (so many pubs don't seem to offer the medium option now a days so that was great!).

Came to tonight to try the new menu and we weren’t disappointed! Everything we tried was delicious and staff were lovely. Would recommend!

Went for Sunday lunch with the family. Lovely friendly service, comfortable setting with lovely old roaring fires. Youngsters happily catered for. Food was very nice indeed with good portions and plenty of veg included. Vegetarian and vegan options for one of our party. I also noted as we left that the place was dog friendly with water bowls and dog biscuit treats by the door which is a nice touch.

Been here before and not been overly impressed, but this time it was great. Service was excellent and the food was really really good.

We'd been walking the London Loop from Hamsey Green to Coulsdon [pdf of route on Tfl website: London Loop] and had had a wonderful walk on a grey December morning across many ups and downs before walking through 'Happy Valley' - a park that actually lived up to the name- away from all traffic noise with gorgeous views and lots of birdlife to spot. As we exited the park, we saw an imposing pub sign for 'The Fox' but couldn't see the pub itself...
