We enjoyed a drink while we waited for our curry to be prepared. We were made to feel welcome & we’ll be back to check out the other local brews. Our takeaway curry was stunning! Beautiful flavours!

*avoid! Landlord pretty much pushed us out the door before we could in due to having a dog! Extremely rude & very short sighted considering we were in a natural beauty area with several public footpaths! This was the only pub that did not allow dogs inside throughout our stay & we visited many! shame as we were staying nearby &would of spent more time & money here! Their loss!

After coming here, we would never go anywhere else for an Indian, the food is just amazing and the staff are wonderful. On all occasions we have eaten here the land lady is very friendly and offered us a blanket when choosing to eat outside. And Andy the landlord is a great guy! We have bought family and friends here and they love the quirkiness of the pub. Side note: Unsure as to why some people on here are disappointed with the non restaurant situation. The staff are always happy to accommodate customers to eat either inside or outside on the tables. It’s not that outrageous or hard to understand! :)

I don't understand these last 2 reviews. 1. The food is fresh, 2. The sign and staff tell you that it's take away not a restaurant but eating at a table is available on take away cutlery. 3. It's a takeaway not a restaurant but they allow you to use what was the restaurant if the pub is busy and you don't want to sit outside (pretty generous as it's NOT a restaurant). . As for the last one about relying on tourists, only one who looked at what beer they served then asked for beer not available would comment like this. Yes the landlord can be sarcastic but it's in humour not nastiness if you don't like it actually ask for beer that's available not ones that they clearly don't have! Personally we love this place.

I happened to try this place on the off chance as I live relatively nearby but had never stopped off there but I'm glad I did. As a vegetarian I tend to find Indian takeaways hit and miss with their flavourings and options when it comes to veggie food but River Spice is superb - their paneer curries are wonderful, very tasty and good portions for the money too. Another bonus is the local ales on tap, definitely give them a try when you pop in!

Inspired by the review on TripAdvisor, we visited this restaurant. To put it bluntly, the TripAdvisor rating is way too high. We found out on site that only take-away food was served at the table. We ordered anyway. Well, we've been informed about it. Nevertheless, I would like to have this mentioned for future guests. The whole menu was delivered to the table in a large bag. Cutlery, plates etc. were all served to the table as disposable crockery. The salad packed in small plastic bags. The food itself was below average and not fresh in our opinion. The ambiance in the back room was bad. The photos in Trip Advisor do not match what we found. The overall rating on TripAdvisor is way too high in my opinion. There is always 1 star, there is a second star for the food, which might have tasted a bit better if it had been served with normal crockery. Unfortunately I cannot give more stars. Sorry for this honest review but this has to be mentioned. All in all, the visit was a disappointment.

Strange vibe to this place. The inside of the pub is like your typical countryside local where a stranger steps in and feels all the eyes in the room, and the beer garden is basically a car park .... BUT wow what amazing food we had there! The curries are so good, we almost came back the day after for a second visit! So tasty, we enjoyed them so much. Wish we were local as we would be ordering from there all the time! Glad there was a specific vegan menu- a large one too. The landlady was so friendly and kind, especially to our dog! Would recommend, don't be put off by first impressions.

My brother’s 60th birthday celebrations were well planned and we sent our menu choices a few days beforehand as requested by the restaurant. We needn’t have bothered. Despite valiant efforts by the two waiting staff there was chaos in the service. All the mains were served over a 15 minute period and only then did start serving the rice and naans. Everything was cold by the time the complete meal arrived and even then the food was not very good. What was the reaction of the manager? To blame his customers and become loudly belligerent towards us, even though we were polite and respectful to him. I doubt very much that they will learn lessons from our experience and will find reasons to avoid changing their ways. We were going to spend the rest of the evening there but settled the bill and left. We avoided it the following day for Sunday lunch, preferring a 4 mile walk instead. It’s just around the corner from the River Wye Lodge (a lovely place to stay) but don’t bother to take your party here. It didn’t spoil our weekend as it was so bad it was like we were cast adrift together!

The landlord came in to help but instead of helping all he managed to do was shout at us and was extremely rude. After some meals were reheated and fresh naan breadsbought to the table only a limited number of the group enjoyed their meal. They really should have had more staff as we were such a large group. After a grueling days canoeing my associates and I happened to settle upon the establishment known as the Forge Hammer. Feeling hot and parched we decided to order some drinks. We walked into the somewhat empty bar and proceeded to place our order in what we felt was a logical and expedient manner for all parties concerned. Half way through executing my drinks order I was told by the bar steward to stop farting around and quickly finish my drinks order as it was going to get busy very quickly. Apparently all orders had to be “plumbed in” before drinks could begin being poured. This demonstrates an inability to remember a few drinks and indicates a lack of experience in bar management etiquette. It is fair to say, in his defence, that he was on his own and to be honest, my associates and I felt it was unfair for this inexperienced Bar Steward who was clearly out of his depth to be left on his own in a pressure cooker environment. If we could rate this bar 0 out of 5 then this would be too much of a high score all because of the poor customer service which had become a running joke between the patrons in the pub car park who’s experiences with this Bar Steward seemed to mirror ours. We hope that the management can be made aware and assist this employee with the training and development he so clearly needs.

The meals arrived in good time and a mix-up with one dish was swiftly sorted out and a replacement dish received in a few minutes. Portion sizes were adequate and not overly spicy. The restaurant was not particularly busy but our table of 10 proved a challenge to the one person serving. Mario (we learnt his name later) hails from Birmingham and insists on calling everyone "Mate" Apart from that he nicknamed one of our party "poshboy" and another "adidas man", luckily neither took offence but he could have been skating on thin ice. Hidden away in Lower Lydbrook, this lovely pub is friendly and welcoming. There is a restaurant tucked away through the back, where you can enjoy a very good curry. For those with Coeliac disease, food allergies or intolerances, it is helpful that the menu states those dishes that DO contain gluten or nuts, rather than those that don't. One of the staff is affected personally, so they really are on the ball! Really enjoyed our meal. Well worth a visit.

Stopped off at The Forge Hammer when we were canoeing down the River Wye. It was a short walk from our landing point. We had a dog with us and there was a dod drinking bowl outside the pub so she could join us having a drink. I went in to th ebar which sold Sharp's beer. I asked to sample the Original and Atlantic beers and the barman told me that he drank 1/2 & 1/2 so I said I would try the same which I did and it tasted good. He then went on to tell me that that how Sharp's Doom Bar came to be by mixing two of their other beers. There is an Indian restaurant attached to the pub but when I heard someone ask for some Indian food they were told it was close at that time. It was around 2pm on a Saturday.I would go back here beer was good and barman / landlord was friendly, we had a bit of banter between him and the group I was with

Lovely Indian restaurant, separate room to the main bar so not trying to enjoy your meal surrounded by locals/drinkers etc. Reasonable prices on food and drinks. Table service. Waitress (Tracy) really friendly and helpful when we were deciding what to order. Highly recommend the banquet menu which is a bit like all you can eat, but cooked to order and brought to the table for you. Take away also available. Plenty of parking (free). Close to river bank for walks.

We've only recently moved to the Forest from London and chose to visit this, our local Indian restaurant, for the first time today. So first, I feel I need to give this some perspective. Having been spoilt for choice in London we have high expectations and are not easy to please when it comes to curry; so what a delightful surprise to find that behind this unassuming local pub is a hidden secret. I mean don't get me wrong, the pub clearly displays that it incorporates the restaurant but considering the implications: pub and curry, then the last thing we expected was what was inside. Let me talk about the ambiance first. The decor is immaculate, clean walls, subtle Indian artifacts. Not in any way cliched. The background music is traditional and gentle rather than obtrusive. The staff are the most helpful I have ever encountered and as for the food. Well, we decided on the all you can eat option which is brought to your table fresh rather than left to congeal in a ban marie. The waiter warned us the portions would be taster size but we thought they were actually ideal; only a little smaller than full size. and the starters and sundry dishes - including the bread - are full size. Also, the popadoms, which come with the deal are fresh with delicious chutneys. To cap this all you can re-order as many dishes as you like so even if you did find the main dishes small it doesn't matter. And just as a side thought; I have spent a number of years on a self-imposed mission to discover the best CTM in the country and so far, this might just be the leader. All we can say is well done and thanks. I know there is very little in the way of negative reviews about this restaurant but if you find any at all then don't listen. Of course all opinion is subjective, and you can't please everyone, but as a curry lover, take it from me this is superb. Well done!

The host was very welcoming. Lighting very grey and ash tones hurt my eyes. The Buffet menu is different to the one on facebook. Says order three each and comes in little dishs, so started to put my order in and was told they curry's came in larger dish and to only order 1. I went to the forge hammer about 5 years ago and the food was out of this world, kept telling everyone to go, not now. Starters were nice.

Our second trip to the area this year.No visit would be complete without at least one evening at the Forge Hammer and an Indian Meal in the River Spice restaurant which can be found on the same premises. It's so good we went twice and we were only there four nights !!!!Andy continues to keep a really authentic/friendly pub feel to the bar helped by a wide choice of beers. Good chance of meeting some local characters in the bar as well.Ali continues to establish the restaurant, tweeking the menu to ensure that new and established customers alike get the most from their visits. The food is delicious, the welcome always warm and a good evening is guaranteed. This really is a winning combination.

Another visit, 6 months on. Andy and Ali are the same as ever, welcoming and warm hosts. The beer is great and the Indian food as wonderful as ever. A new menu is almost ready, but we have tried some of the dishes already and they are excellent. This is one of our regular destinations on our frequent trips to the Wye Valley, just wish we lived closer!

Visited here one Friday evening recently, after a bike ride in the forest. Food is soo much better than your average Indian restaurant. More interesting choices and it's properly home cooked. Often it's the same chunks of chicken thrown in the sauce of your choice, but you could tell this had actually been cooked in the sauce from scratch, and it was nice, succulent pieces of meat. Even the poppadoms and chutneys were excellent - my (Indian) husband actually asked where the pickles were from, they were that good!

Just moved into the area. Our estate agent recommended this restaurant. He was spot on! Excellent vegetarian choices for us. We ate here with friends on Saturday night. Considering it was bank holiday weekend we were surprised that it wasn't packed as the the service, surroundings, friendliness and food were excellent - other than to echo a previous comment that it could be a bit spicier. But that's just my taste. The rest of the party were happy. This is now our local so looking forward to many return visits.

We visited the Indian restaurant attached to the Forge Hammer pub on a Sunday evening recently staying in nearby Lydbrook (well over 25 minute walk!) - it seemed to be pretty much the only open place we could find! The food was really tasty, generous sized portions and at a great price - exactly what we were after a long day. The Cobra beer on tap must have been the best I've ever had too! As it was a special occasion, we mentioned this to our waiter who to our surprise brought us out a bottle of bubbly to celebrate - really generous!Would definitely visit when we are back in the area, thank you!

We stayed at a local B&B and found the Forge Hammer to be an added bonus. A good curry and great service from the owners and staff. The food is a modern take on indian food, mine could of been spicier but overall it was good.
