This place is inside the market. Fresh fish, fresh oil. Firm delicious fish, none of this mushy stuff you get so often. Mushiness is for peas, not the fish. Warmly recommended.

Shut down by the snobs at John Lewis, along with all the other businesses in this row, The Fisherman's Wife is now situated at the bottom of the food hall inside the market itself. It still serves the best fish and chips in Leeds city centre. Good value and friendly service.

Called during the week at lunch time so a bit of a queue but two serving were on the ball and soon got served, fish and chips at £7-50 a bit over priced for take away Fish and chips compared to others with equal or better food in Yorkshire. The fish was cooked perfect with crisp batter, the chips were not bad but I've had better although I would say most fish shops seem to have chips not has good has other fast food outlets. I knocked a point off because of the price but four and a half would be fare..

Great view of the coast from the restaurant however I found the food not as good as rival restaurants and reviews online. The whole lobster meat was dry and I’d prefer more garlic butter on it. The starter of seafood bouillabaisse was a bit disappointing in terms of flavour and type of seafood. The bread roll could have been heated up so it was warm.

No longer trading in restaurant shop. But instead they're inside the indoor market. In open space. Not the same as before. Planned to have our afternoon lunch at the fisherman's wife, and only to find out that they have closed and relocated in the market with shoppers passing by as your eating. Not the same, table and chairs are in the open space surrounded by market stalls, and people walking pass you. Not the same. I personally don't prefer the changes.

While it was very sad that this long-established chippy were forced to relocate because of the snobs and John Lewis, and the Quisling city council. They are now located inside the once-thriving, but increasingly gentrification-ravaged Kirkgate Market, right at the bottom of the so-called food hall. The lasses who work here are still doing a great job, and the food is as good as ever. It remains popular, and is certainly the best fish and chip shop in Leeds city centre.

I have been a customer of this fish shop since the age of about 6. I'm now 45 and this place has never changed apart from some slight cosmetic alterations over the years. The long queues outside are testimony to the incredible flavour and consistency of these terrific fish and chips. If I could open a chain of these restaurants around the world I'm pretty sure world peace would ensue, as the people of the world are turned onto a truly classic British meal that leaves you smiling and wanting more. I live in London now and you might imagine that with all the worlds cuisines on our doorstep finding decent fish and chips would be a breeze. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact after years of searching I've only found one place that comes anywhere near emulating the taste and quality that this Leeds shop provides. Chiefly because they still use beef dripping to fry in so at least on that score the flavour is in the right ball park. Unfortunately the fish doesn't really hit the mark. The fillets are too thin or the fish is too dry. I don't know how they do what they do at the Fisherman's Wife but it would seem very few are able to match it.....anywhere! Making a special trip up to Leeds over the Christmas break.....just to eat here!

The only down side was the tables needed to be cleared off and wiped as i had someones mushy peas stuck to my arm when we left. All in all a great little gem for a nice cheap lunch.

1. Ignore the closing times. Staff don't stick to them. Say closing time 17:30 from 17:00 it's a nightmare. Most of the counter area is cordened off and if any customers entering are confined to the counter immediately by the till. 6 chaps were turned away at 17:15 one day. 2. We ordered a teacake with our meal which the assistant offered to bring to us. It never materialised. As we were leaving I asked her where the teacake was. Looking round she said she was too busy and anyway they'd run out. There wasn't a soul at the counter and she was stood there idle. No refund was offered.3. On the following visit we were served by the same off hand surly assistant. This fish was fine though not consistent in size but the chips? Take look at the photo. Absolute garbage and inedible. We will be having our pre theatre meal elsewhere in future. The reason I say this cafe has gone downhill is that we'd been on previous occasions and the service and food were faultless. Great place for chips. Happy to see that they have stopped charging an extra 50p for paying by card. They also take contactless now.Would be good if the card terminals were mounted to the counter facing the customer to make it easier to pay though. I'd imagine that doing this would also encourage more people to pay via contactless which would speed up each transaction (reducing queue time for customers). It would also be good if they put a sticker in the window indicating that they accept Apple / Android Pay.

I had the prawn cocktail which was excellent, I then had the scampi which was just ok. My partner had the fish cakes which had hardly any fish in them, and the mushy peas were awful. The bread came unbuttered, and was dry, but the butter itself was fine. The service was slow, it seemed to be run by one person who worked hard but she had slow assistants. Although it got busy later, when we arrived there was only 3 or 4 tables occupied. I don't think that we will go again.

We like the look of it because it was very busy, the seating area was full of local people and was still quite early before the lunch time rush. All the fish and potatoes are sourced locally. The ladies serving were quick and efficient. We sat in at the far end of the eating area. It was clean and simply finished. The lovely ladies carried our drinks whilst carried our piping hot cod and chips. My friend had a chicken burger and chips. Beautifully crispy and the salad garnish had just been purchased from the market. The sitting area was very busy but we didn't feel rushed. Over all the whole experience was gorgeous. Unfortunately the restaurant has lost its way through a lack of staff and what staff they do have, are reliant on 1 person. The other younger member of staff just turns up I think, work doesn't really come in to her reckoning. Tea, bread and butter turned up well after we had received our fish and chips and then the 'grilled' haddock I ordered turned out to be poached' but was raw on the undersurface. So disappointing I am afraid. Added to this, it was a day when the Test Match was at Headingley so probably more staff would have been a good idea!

As the title says best fish and chips in Leeds, quite surprised that there's very few reviews for this place. The fish and chips here are really top draw and it is good value.I would recommend the chip shop curry to go with your fish and chips and in the last year or 2 I can't really remember when, they have added a seating area.I have been coming here for as long as I remember and nothing beats this place for me in Leeds at least.

Excellent food and great choice. Suggest you book ahead. For the "top" meals they are between £25 and £30 each. I had a mixed fish dish which was excellent.

The food was very average. There was nothing unique or special about the food. The service was substandard. I would definitely avoid this place.

Popped in for a cheeky pint before dinner with my mate. The place has a good selection of local beer, good service and atmosphere. There are lots of rooms and it’s spacious.

Mrs Bore and I had a salmon and ham sandwich respectively. Both really well prepared on fresh bread though just short of £10 each. The one thing preventing 5 stars is they had outside heaters that nearly singed my hair.
