Our last night in the UK, we took London based family out for dinner. It came recommended and was in walking distance of our accommodation. Service and food were good. Probably at the slightly higher end price wise at about 20 pound each.

We had a list of Indian restaurants we intended to visit in Brick Lane, however as this is one of the first we came across coming from Whitechapel, a persuasive tout in the street encouraged us to visit. We were offered a meal deal which should have cost my wife and I only £12.99 each. I had a shami kebab and chicken dhansak, and she had a prawn puri and a vegetarian dish, along with a side of mushroom bhaji and naan bread. Sadly the food was average at best, lacking in any real flavour, and had a pale, bland colour. My beer had an unusual after-taste and certainly did not resemble any Kingfisher I’d had before. When the bill arrived, despite having had a basic meal, we were charged £39 and not the £26 I expected. When challenged this was reduced to £35 but I still have no idea where the extra charges came from. This is a very basic no frills restaurant with no expense spared on decor. I can’t fault the staff, who were attentive and engaging, but next time I’m going to stick to my guns and go elsewhere

The Moonlight is on the busy Brick Lane but out of the main strip. We passed all the apparent award winning restaurants and 'ended' up here. The staff work tirelessly outside to get you in with a great offer. I felt it wasn’t an offer but a going rate of £15 per head. The restaurant was small and absolutely no cost went into décor especially with all the competition on the road. There was one door in great need of painting that stood out. The food was mediocre and absolutely nothing to write home about. Their Food rating is 4 out of 5 which is relatively good. Great customer service from Uddin. The toilets could benefit from a complete overhaul.

The food was awful. Like other have said, it tasted like it was microwaved and or store bought. I could have made my meal at home and it would have tasted better. I also would never have come here if I had read the earlier reviews here that say it was almost shut down for poor safety and hygiene standards. When the bill came the guy conveniently pretended not to speak English well and overcharged us. There were just random words we could not make out and price calculations. We paid just to get out of there but it still makes me mad. We spent around $80 for revolting "food" , some of which we did not actually order/receive. This place needs to be investigated, avoid at all costs if you're a tourist.

I came to brick lane looking for a Nice Indian restaurant to have dinner at. Note that pretty much all the Brick lane restaurants have someone outside trying to lure you in, and I found this guy to be one of the least pushy. I have to say I am surprised by some of the low reviews here. The food was delicious (I had a vegetarian dish with Aubergine, tomato and garlic but I can’t remember the name) garlic Nan and plain basmati rice. The waiter was slightly pushy trying to get me to order a starter or side, but he was polite when I refused and the service was attentive throughout. Everyone at the restaurant seemed to be enjoying themselves. I would eat here again.

Usually I get - Starter, Main, (sometimes Naan) and a Drink (although from other reviews looks like some people are getting two drinks...but I think they are halves and I usually make sure it's a pint of lager I get) for £10. Quite honestly, I always enjoy the food, and I think it's decent value. And lets face it, in London, there are very few places where you can get such cheap deals on food and drink!

While walking we were approached by a famous moonlight employee inviting us in and extolling the great food and great prices: "2 beers, 1 curry, 1 appetizer - only 12 pounds - great value - best curry you will every have - only 12 pounds - come in, come in, if you don't like you don't pay - good deal, come in!" My partner and I we "caught" by one of the staff, who offered us a full meal for 2 (starter, naan, main, rice, and 2 drinks each) for £10each. "Bargain", we thought! In we went.We ordered a lamb Jalfrezi and a Shatkora Biran Mas (a fish dish) as mains, with a sheek kebab and a shami kebab to start, and a couple of lemonades. The kebabs were small, almost cold, and dreadful tasting, so we got rid of them quickly. The mains turned up shortly after. The Biran Mas was undercooked on the inside, and overcooked on the outside, I assume because it was deep-fried-from-frozen instead of being cooked fresh. The jalfrezi tasted like yesterday's left-over curries had gone back into a tupperware pot and then been reheated in a microwave. Truly terrible. The naan, seemingly, was not cooked in a Tandoor, and was probably grilled. I base this supposition on the fact that it was as thin as a slice of hovis, was far too crispy in some places, and was not cooked properly in others. I'll concede that, despite being a bit raw and doughy, the naan actually tasted okay, for what it was.I can't argue that the amount of food wasn't good value for money, quantity-wise, but the quality left everything to be desired.I am a man who loves food, and will try anything twice to make sure that I don't like something, but I don't think I'd ever return here.

Prijs/prestatie dus dik in orde. What is it with Brick Lane - is it because they have a captive audience and a very large number of potential customers that this is a good enough reason to stop trying when it comes to cuisine? This is one of the shabby ones on brick lane - brick lane is in dire need of a revamp especially the southern end where this one is situated - but that is no excuse for not marinating the meat or serving tiny portions and charging £4.95 for a pint of Kingfisher. The Sauce the meat was marinated in was of good standard and nice and spicy went for a couple of their specials Dal Samber and Garlic Chilli Chicken Tikka - but if it wasn't for this I would of left very disappointed 4/10

This is more or less the first Bengali restuarant on Brick Lane, and they have a huster stationed outside. If you don't say much, but hang around a bit, he will eventually offer you three courses and two rounds of drinks for £10. If you accept this offer (which they do honour, with pints of lager as drinks and a popadom as one of the courses), you cannot complain if it isn't haute cuisine. And it isn't. It is roughly the quality of the average high street take away. Edible, but well below average for UK south asian food in a restuarant. You get offered two popadoms, so you pay 50p for the second popadom. They give you chutneys, which are another 60p each. And desserts are extra. It is a bit churlish to complain about this (they have to make a living), but nearly everyone else did. This creates an interesting atmosphere as one table after another argues about the bill. Of course nearly all the clinetele are youthful tourists. We weren't, and the entire spectacle amused us, but continuous conflict over dinner may not be to your taste. The decor is tatty but not unpleasant. No post-curry stomache upset. We only went in because we couldn't be bothered to shake off the hustler. I wouldn't avoid the place, but next time I might hold out to see how low he will go. If you are likely to feel ripped off by being charged £11.10 for a meal you expected to cost £10, don't go in, but I'd suggest that you'd be foolish or exceptionally mean if you didn't expect some kind of extras.

"DO NOT GO IN" Should have kept walking up the street !Food was quite simply the worst Indian food we have ever eaten. Sheek kebab starter was barely warm and the main meal was just awful. The only really good food was the Chicken Tikka ( what Indian restaurant would get that wrong? ) There wasnt a towel or drier in the toilets and the soap pump was broken. Yuk.They also added a 10% to our hefty bill with no description and didnt mention it. Their printed bills quote "Service NOT Included !" The waiter couldnt explain this apart from " Oh yes its at your discretion " I would guess most people would pay the bill and leave a tip as well as they read "service not included" Very upset we wasted good money and a treat for our family at such a dreadful place.

We went in by chance after being offered a good deal by the guys outside and after comparing it to several other curry houses on brick lane, we have settled on this one as our favorite and we'll keep coming back. The food is consistently good (personal favorites are the dal soup, chicken bhuna and the lime pickle that comes with the poppadoms is excellent), the value for money is unbeatable particularly if you get the deal with the bottle of wine included, but the real thing that makes the difference is the staff! From the guys standing outside to the waiters to the chefs, they have always been extremely friendly and have gone out of their way to take any special requests we've had and make us feel welcome. I'm usually the kind of person who swears by a restaurant's tripadvisor reviews, but I think this one is worth taking a chance on!

We visited this restaurant on a Saturday night and made the mistake of going in because it was at the start of the street, please don't make the same mistake. We were offered a deal by a tout of a starter, main rice and naan bread and also a pint, I said we didn't want a starter so he said he would do it for £12 instead of £12.95 I also asked if we could have chips instead of rice and he agreed to this all at the £12. Upon entering the restaurant we were shown to a table in a fairly empty restaurant, the waiter was pleasant enough and took our order quickly and with no problems, I ordered chicken tikka sag balti and my partner ordered just a chicken balti we both ordered chips and a cheese naan bread each, the food came quickly and we were both really disappointed, the sag balti had a couple of pieces of "meat" in it, not sure it was chicken and my partner said his curry was like a "boil in the bag" curry, the chips tasted like they'd been cooked in old fat and the naans were plain with no cheese on them, when he came to ask if the food was ok I told him we had ordered cheese naans and he took them away, half eaten, and bought them back with grated cheese on the top!! When our bill came they had charged us more than the £12 they had quoted us and he tried to say it was because we had chips needless to say I only left them the £12. My advice is to go further up the street to the restaurants that have to try harder to get people in you will only be disappointed if you eat here.

First thing you must know about eating at Brick Lane is that there are people standing outside of each Indian restaurant trying to lurk you in. Make sure you don't get lurk in without walking down the street first. This so called 'Famous Moonlight' was the second Indian restaurant we have seen when first arriving at Brick Lane and a tout outside offering a deal for £9 per person. But I wasn't temped so tried to walk away. Then he said to offer us a drink, poppadom, starter, a curry with a rice/naan for £8. Unfortunately my husband was sold by it so we walked in. But it was not a wise decision. This is what I have found:1) The food was average, nothing to 'wow' about it.2) I don't like the waiter who served us. I felt that he was hurrying me to make a decision at all time. He thought he was doing me a favour by giving me 'advice' but I didn't like it.3) The mango lassi was the worst we had ever tasted.4) As someone mentioned, the toilet was not nice!If you are looking for a cheap meal, then go for it. But I regret that I didn't walk down the street first as there were more much better looking restaurants down the street.

Simply the WORST curry I had in my entire life (plain tasteless sauce with two pieces of old lamb). The starter was microwaved frozen samosa.

Being avid indian food fans thought we would have a trip down the famous brick lane. The ambience of brick lane is very authentic and worth the trip. We got pulled in by a tout outside offering a deal for 10. The food was poor small portions the sheek kebabs had been deep fried and greasy. Toilets dirty no tissue or anything to dry your hands on. The whole place is rough which makes you wonder what the kitchen is like.. avoid at all costs. ..

First trip to brick lane so by no means an expert on the restaurants here. We were called in from the street on a deal for £10 per person.Starters: both had chicken chat was gorgeous one of the nicest ones iv ever had.Main: my husband had chicken madras he enjoyed it nice flavour an a good kick of spice.I had medium chicken curry-wasn't the best not alot of flavour n i would have called it very mild spice not medium and this is what i always order so im not normally used to extreme spice. Also each had a peshwari naan bread was so tasty just right on the texture and coconut and a plain rice (lets face it plain rice is plain rice)Both had 2 1/2 pint drinks included £20 for a pretty good meal, not the best indian i have ever been to and the prices are very reasonable anyway but we saved probably about £8 or so and was a perfectly nice meal, cheaper and tastier than some of our local take aways. After the visit i checked out the food hygiene rating as i forgot to do it before hand and was last inspected Jan 14 with a 3 satisfactory. So not the best but if ur passing and hungry its worth a go.

As have others - we got offered a £10 dinner deal. - The "two beers" were half pints, very sneaky. The tables around us got "one beer" which was a pint or a bottle of wine. We asked for one of the four beers between the two of us to be a pint and they charged an extra £2.5 for half a pint of cheap beer!!- The currys were quite small and really the same sauce with about 4 small bits of meat. Both lacked much depth and flavour.- We did not get offered appetisers.- We had naan and rise - so really they filled us up on cheap carbs.Average curry, average service, average atmosphere. Poor value for money. Not recommended. Better deals & food elsewhere.

Having visited Brick Lane with my parents many, many years ago I was excited to take my Indian food loving wife there on her first visit to London. Walking from Aldgate tube station, we lazily opted for one of the nearest restaurants and were punished with a sub-standard experience. The food - Starters were bland and not fresh. My wife's tikka masala was so salty that she had to send it back, it was as though the cook had spilled the whole salt shaker in the pan. When it returned, it was edible but bland. The service - We were the only people there, it was just past midday on a sunday to be fair. Our waiter was relentless with his chatter, which was good fun to begin with but started to grate after a while. It was very underwhelming and we both felt a little queasy for the rest of the day. I regretted not doing some proper research on here for better options.

We headed to Brick Lane expecting a unique curry experience. We were approached by a touter outside the restaurant (as it seemed many others in this forum were) offering starter, main, rice and side plus a pint and a half of lager for £10.95. I opted for the veg thali. The selections were nothing special: Bombay aloo, sag aloo, dall, and ordinary vegetable curry. My date had shami kebab to start, lamb balti, rice and sag aloo, which were all ok. The food was not that hot and the portions were average. I was concerned they would shaft us when the bill came as it seemed like a good deal but they were true to their word. The bill came to about £27 as we added some poppadoms. If we had come to London just for an Indian meal I would have been sorely disappointed but as we were in town to do some sightseeing, it wasn't that big of a deal. I have a feeling most of the restaurants in Brick Lane are average so I wouldn't advise making a special trip (only my opinion).

Avoid this place at all costs. The touts outside claim you will get a 4 course meal for 12 pounds. Two of the "courses" are rice and naan. Those are sides, not courses. The red wine we received as part of our meal was closer to vinegar than wine. And the next bottle we paid for was 12 pounds for the same rubbish. The lamb korma tasted like 5 cups of sugar mixed in with condensed milk and a sorry bit of curry. Truly terrible dining experience.

The beauty of Brick Lane is that there are so many restaurants to choose from that you can choose to be fussy with the deals staff present on the street in an attempt to win your custom.'The Famous Moonlight' was okay but I have been to better places in Brick Lane. The inside surroundings aren't very inviting and customers appear to be huddled together in a small, confined space. The 'air conditioning' appeared to be a £9.99 Argos fan on rotation (not great during a heat wave). My starter - a mix kebab - was three morsels of non-descript meat with a dribble of salad (as someone else has stated). The main (mine was a chicken tikka dish) was nice but the portion was not huge. We were offered a bottle of wine with our deal which I'm sure I have seen on sale at the local newsagents for £2.99, though the wine was still nice in spite of this. The staff were very friendly and talkative, they showed great customer service skills. They are a family business and you can tell that they want to do a good job. There is no expected service charge on your bill either which makes me want to give them a tip all the more! Few things rile me up more than staff telling me that I should tip..Recommended.

OK, it was my fault - I was hustled in by the staff waiting on the street to get pedestrians into their restaurant. The Kingfisher beer was good and cold, unfortunately, so was the vegetable pakora. Hot on the outside but icy in the middle. Then they got our order wrong. I had ordered lamb and got chicken. Not cool (unlike the pakora). Just an average meal. Will not return.

I went to The Famous Moonlight on Saturday night with my husband and a friend. We were approached in the street (as always, in Brick Lane) and encouraged to dine there on one of their £10 deals - we negotiated poppadums, a starter, two drinks, main (any, incl seafood), rice and naan for a tenner each, which is about what we'd expect to get down Brick Lane. My issues are this:(1) I got the mixed kebab for a starter, and it was just three tiny pieces of non-descript meat with a limp bit of unappealing lettuce.(2) My main was listed as "King Prawn Korma" but in actual fact it was tiny, frozen-then-reheated shrimps that are rubbery in texture and generally tasteless.(3) The two "drinks" were half-pints, not pints as we'd expected (something we probably should have clarified at the time of negotiation)(4) When our order was taken our waiter tried to tell us we were allowed rice OR naan, when we'd clearly negotiated both. When he eventually conceded (as we were not backing down) he said we could only have two servings of rice between the three of us - admittedly, this was enough, but we were entitled to one each so it was a bit annoying. (5) My fellow diners mains were fine, but I'm told the meat was minimal and there wasn't much spice. We felt a bit like a cattle yard, being herded in, pushed through, and herded out quickly. To be honest, I wouldn't really mind that part of it if the food was up to scratch. You probably think that for £10 you shouldn't expect much, but having been to various places on Brick Lane half a dozen or so times, all of which do some kind of £10 deal, and this was my worst experience of the lot. The restaurant also smelt a little funky. A good point - the guy outside that we negotiated with seemed really nice, and not too pushy, even to other patrons who weren't interested. Two stars may seem harsh, and in honesty I'd like to give 2.5, but when I think that I wouldn't go back, and I wouldn't recommend a friend go there, it seems fair.

Food is good. But they charge you more than the written price on the menu. They don’t give a proper bill to the customer. You have to go to the counter desk for pay and they charge you as they wish. They are very busy so they take the advantage to charge you more as you cannot see your bill. Be careful when you visit them!
