The Duke at Bratton in Wiltshire

Very expensive for what you get. Poor music choice. Generally unhelpful service. We went to the Horse and Groom in Westbury the next day and couldn’t have a table. Duke, get real and wake up to reality, your livelihood relies on people…

I ordered chichen supreme which is chicken in white wine sauce. I got 2 chicken breast with gravity and veg. It was not what I ordered and I think you have to change what is said on your menue

We chose the Duke as it has good reviews, and we are staying locally to visit family. We ordered olives to nibble while we waited for our mains. The olives were good, but the main courses took an hour arrive. The presentation was good, but the meats were very overdone. My chicken was dry and tasteless. My mother had ordered pork belly and the crackling was burned and the meat was stringy. We didn’t bother with dessert or coffee. We might not have minded the wait if the results had been better.

Had a very nice lunch here. Lots of choice also smaller plates choice which I find better as that was what I wanted. Very friendly staff and quick service. I tried the ice cream with espresso coffee. Very tasty. Lots of parking and clean toilets. Will try here again soon.

My partner and I made an unplanned visit to The Duke at Bratton, the staff were very friendly and surroundings clean and comfortable. For starters we had the hummus with toasted sourdough, have to say one portion was more than enough for two sharing and very nice. My wife ordered the Caesar Salad with chicken, I didn’t try it but she said it was ok just not very well seasoned. Said she would have it again though. I had the vegan burger… It came with onion rings that were almost tasteless apart from the fat they had been fried in. The chips, soggy. They were ok, tasted inoffensive but just soggy. Was as if the oil hadn’t been hot enough, same for the onion rings. The burger itself had decent bun with salad leaf and tomato along with plenty of relish. The patty though was just weird, I can’t even describe the taste but it wasn’t nice. It had a batter coating which again tasted like the oil hadn’t been hot enough, definitely not for me. I wouldn’t say it was nasty but I wouldn’t order it again. In short hummus and beer good, staff very pleasant, nice surroundings but the food, meh.

We live locally and this was our third visit and each time we found the pub understaffed, waiting about half an hour to be greeted, the service is friendly but scarce. The staff are not on the ball, on our second visit the pub ground to a dead stop when the local cricket team descended. We have visited other pubs where two people ran the bar and service seamlessly, wake up Duke! At one visit the staff were surprised that people had actually arrived! £70 for a meal and drinks for two is not cheap, we deserve better, c'mon Duke you had a pub full this evening and nobody was being served, we even gave up on our coffee and left. Duke, the food is excellent but you could do so much better with your service

Good Sunday roast, reasonably priced, good service from friendly staff. Excellent ales from in house brewery. Recommended.

Had lunch today, ordered vegan burgers for my daughter and myself, just amazing, done to perfection. We will be definitely returning!

A lovely setting in a lovely village with a lovely view, so shame about the Sunday lunch. Opting for the roast chicken, I had a dry piece of meat, accompanied by squidgy roast potatoes, a rock-hard parsnip, a chewy Yorkshire pudding, and tough broccoli. And lashings of jelly-like gravy, too. Yes, it was awful. And the fact we still had to pay when we complained just made matters worse. Very poor unless you have money to burn, on burnt food ... ☹️

We dropped by this evening and decided to stay for a meal. We haven’t eaten here for a while, because last time we weren’t too impressed. Not so tonight. The food was delicious. Perfectly cooked and attractively presented (the thai green curry- wow!). Thanks also to Ro for being as cheery and welcoming as she always is.

Absolutely superb Sunday Lunch. All five of us were delighted with the quality of the food and the very reasonable prices. Rowena and Gemma are fabulous hosts. Their hard work and lovely smiles, together with the delicious food, made for an excellent experience. Five stars all the way.

Had an amazing Sunday lunch on the 28th January. Great quality food, well cooked and prepared and a very generous meal. It was a family birthday which we will remember. Service was brilliant from the moment we walked in and throughout the meal. The staff are great! Would highly recommend a visit.

My husband and I have visited this pub a few times since moving to the area and the food is always of a very high standard but why I am writing this review is for the two ladies who served us today when we had Sunday lunch. So friendly and professional and always with some humour and banter....customer service at its finest.

We came here for Sunday lunch and it didn’t disappoint, great friendly staff choice of small, medium or large roast was perfect for our varying levels of hunger and the selection of vegetables was perfect especially you could ask for extra, made it a fab meal and lashings of piping hot gravy and an extra jug really made it. Possibly the best restaurant roast I’ve had in years! Thank you 😊

Oh dear! This was not a good experience and I hate to be negative. I opted for the ham hock with toast and piccalilli. The ham was so salty and stringy and the toast I fear had been left out all night to dry out. The piccalilli probably went back in the jar! We sat outside because we had dogs, which was great, but it just all looked so sad and unloved. We were close to a very full skip on the edge of the car park, the grass was badly in need of a mow and all in all it was not an experience I'd like to repeat. And I'm only posting this because it wasn't exactly a 'cheap' brunch. Many apologies to the nice lady who served us!

This is my local pub. It has always been lovely. Great service and food. I booked a table a couple of weeks in advance for my sister's 50th birthday. We arrived, not even asked my name. Offered outside or inside. We said outside. Told to pick a table. One dirty bench was free. We took our drinks out, not allowed to have them on a tab. Told to take our menus with us which were food splattered pieces of A4 paper. My sister's partner had to go back in and order and bring out a pile of cutlery and a few paper napkins because there was none left. He had to pay up front for the food when he ordered. We stayed for our mains which were nice. But didn't bother with anything else and went home. This was supposed to be a special evening for my sister, I was wanting to pay after the meal but it ended up being my sister's partner paying. For the price I would have expected much better service. I'm so disappointed. I don't normally complain and I'm easy going but this really got to me.

I have given The Duke 5 star reviews under previous ownership, but a recent visit for a birthday meal was very disappointing. The menu is quite basic, limited and expensive, but that is ok given the current economic climate if the food is good. There was a long wait for our meal even though the restaurant was quiet and when it finally arrived, the food was mediocre at best and not really worth the wait or the expense. We left feeling disappointed and slightly ripped off as our meals were of a very poor standard for the amount they are charging. You can eat elsewhere locally for a similar price and much nicer food.

Starter: The soup was hot and wholesome. The Haddock consisted of only four 25mm diameter crusty bread balls placed in mayonnaise dabs. Main Course: The Belly Pork was served as a 50mm (two inch) cube. The top gristle was about 3mm thick. It was over cooked and unchewable. A cube of under-cooked fat was sandwiched between the top gristle and a thin layer of undercooked pork meet below. The drinks were normal but of course they were prepared by third parties and only had to be poured into glasses. At an overall cost of £84, it was appalling value for money

There wasn't a great selection on the menu. Not your basics like steak and chips. All a bit fancy. My Husband ended up with 2 starters for main as nothing he liked. The food was dangerously hot and should never be served that hot. I had a squid (very tasteless) starter and couldn't eat it for 20mins, it burnt my fingers and my mouth. My Dad had a curry for main and they put the small amount of curry inside the poppadum, everyone knows you use the poppadum to dip in the chutney and curry not sure it as a cup. My Dad also had an Apple Crumble for pudding and they served it in a tea cup!!! That was also thermonuclear he had to pour the tiniest just of custard over a crumble in a tea cup. Trying to be too upmarket in a small country pub.

We where served by Lauren who was amazing and knowledgeable Quality of food was great, lots of choice and we couldn’t fault anything If we are in the area again we will be back

We rang the phone to book a meal for five. The person who took the call said someone from the Duke would give us a callback, we didn't receive any callback so we went elsewhere.

We stayed a few hundred yards from here and it is one of the few restaurants in Bratton. The food was lovely and the staff very friendly. We had the mussels and the beef pie. Beer and cider selection was excellent, the wine selection was more limited. Note, the kitchen closes in the afternoons so you’ll have to time your visit accordingly.

Came here as part of a large family group (19 people). Warm and welcoming on arrival and exceptionally helpful. We all ate together and no one has to wait for their food. The food was of a good standard and the food service professional. Would highly recommend the The Duke at Bratton.

Very strange dining experience. Came here as a family of four after reading some good reviews, left bitterly disappointed, Starters were on the whole very nice. We had the goats cheese and beetroot salad and the deep fried squid in batter, both were lovely. The creamy garlic mushrooms were more like six button mushrooms in a creamy garlic soup, I ordered the beef burger, PLEASE, don't make this mistake check photos, even my nine year old was less than impressed. The hunters chicken was a bit dry, and the minted potatoes were bland and obviously yesterday's batch but at least the ales were good, and they were kind enough to take some money off the bill for my inedible (clearly) frozen beef burger. I can only assume they have had a falling out with the "French chef" or he doesn't like working Saturdays? Otherwise I would have given a one star review which isn't like me, please check my reviews 👍.
