The drunken Coo in South Ayrshire

Wagyu ribeye best steaks we’ve ever had, just quality as soon as you walk through the door and greeted by the friendly staff.

I have no problem paying good money for a meal when it is worth it, however I feel that the Drunken Coo is very expensive for what it is. The steak itself was incredible but at £56 was overpriced. My friend had a halloumi starter at £8.50 and the portion size was absolutely pitiful. We were £120 for a starter each, my steak, one sauce and side, my friends falafel burger (which was dry and devoid of flavour), and two soft drinks each. The service was good, but the music was so loud that hearing the waiters was a challenge at times. I think the management would be doing themselves a favour by reviewing their prices as quite honestly I felt the bill should have been delivered by someone wearing a mask and toting a pistol.

On price point alone, i am comparing it to the spanish butcher or, to a lesser extent, Miller and Carter. The issue i had was that the service was just ok and the food was so-so. You get, just as nice and well prepared, steak at the Balgarth for much less.

Third visit and incredible yet again. The food is just amazing, heads above all other local establishments. Our steaks (8oz fillet and wagyu denver) were cooked to perfection and the presentation of all 3 courses was just beautiful. Service was impeccable from all staff we encountered and the overall atmosphere in the restaurant was exactly what we wanted for an intimate valentines meal.

Had dinner here on Saturday night & just loved the new menu. I had the Peruvian half roast chicken, with quinoa salad & flatbread, the flavours were amazing, the whole dish was absolutely moreish. My husband had a fillet steak with peppercorn sauce, the fillet as always, was cooked to perfection. We had the Baked Alaska & souffle. The combination of the lemon & thyme curd with the mint sponge made the baked Alaska so light & refreshing. The souffle was delicious. The chefs produce the most amazing food every time we are there, clearly incredibly talented. We also love that they take the time to keep things fresh & roll out new menus, they are not content just to sit back & do the same things, so well done to them. We are here regularly & the food is consistently of the highest standard. All of the team are so kind & welcoming to us & it was great to see it was busy on Saturday night, as January can be notoriously quiet & I am sure the genuine feeling of warmth & hospitality from everyone goes a long way to making it a place people want to return to. I know that is certainly the case for us, it was great to see Micheal, Andy, Sophie Danna & Megan & a big thank you to all of them for always looking after us.

My husband and I wanted to do something nice for our anniversary and a friend recommended this place. Everything was perfect. Excellent food, drinks and service! We will definitely be coming back again.

Went last night for a celebration dinner as it was our sons 21st. Food was amazing. Staff fantastic and so attentive. Will definitely be back.

We had a lovely time and a very nice place to eat out. However, one major disappointment was that the online MENU we looked over prior to deciding on going or not was apparently years out of date. The main I had selected wasn't available, and this was annoying (they blamed the Web search engine for out of date menu) 🙄 advertising things you don't serve isn't great for customer service, and will probably stop me going back again. By the time we knew this, it was too late and embarrassing to leave. What we chose from the limited menu was acceptable, and we both enjoyed the food served.

I have eaten at the Drunken Coo on several occasions and have always enjoyed the food. My partner and I decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner here just before Christmas. Knowing that the day before Christmas Eve would be busy I phoned one week before to reserve a table for 2 at 7 pm. However upon arriving at the restaurant we were told there was no record of our reservation. The manager said the best he could offer was to squeeze us in for one hour, allowing time for only a rushed main course, no starter, or dessert. Since quickly scoffing down a main course with one eye on the clock was not our idea of a romantic night out we declined and had to return home. No offer of compensation was made for a night out that had been completely ruined by some staff member's negligence. To say that we were disappointed is an understatement. The staff on the evening did not seem very interested. Saying "sorry" doesn't really cut it. I will think twice before reserving another table here.

The service was terrific and the food was wonderful

This was easily the best lunch we have ever had in Ayr. Such amazing food for the cost. Please keep this menu running. We phoned about 2.15 one to see if we were too late for lunch, they said no last sitting was 2.30. We arrived and were the only ppl in at that time. But the staff were so friendly and it was not an issue for them. We had the Xmas lunch menu for £35 each. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the baked Alaska dessert was delicious. We will be back again and again.

Always 5 stars as I spoke to chef tonight and this restaurant deserves atleast 2 rossettes as humbly speaking as a hospitaliry professional we need this restaurant to be in the fine dinning scale in Ayrshire 😊

I've been 6/7 times now and the food is always fantastic. The staff are really friendly and attentive and the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere. Looking forward to my next vist!

I had the black cod. Omg it was the best fish I have ever had. Most of the staff were nice apart from one. She just wasn't that nice. Everyone thought the same.

Best place in Scotland for a Steak

Very special night out for us so I was determined to be on best behavior, so did not make an issue. This place, although the food is wonderful and presented exquisitely has lost focus on what is important. It is the customer and their experience, not the privilege of them being there. Strike one....if I ask for my venison to be medium done, i do not expect to be told that it will be at the chefs discretion. I am eating it, not the chef! Strike two....I do not expect my starter to be removed while I am still eating it because my wife says she has finished hers. Strike three...the barrista did not know the difference between an americanno and a double expresso. All in an expensive and spoiled night...will not be back.

My colleagues and I went to drunken coo restaurant for a birthday celebration. I ordered a wagyu steak. It was well made (medium / rare), warm and delicious. Service was fast even for a large group of people. It is very expensive.

Excellent welcome and fabulous service straight off the bat. Food was prompt and quality. This restaurant is a step above. Highly recommend.

Pam and I enjoyed a cosy Sunday night dinner. Staff, especially Dana (hope the spelling is correct) and another young lady were attentive without being intrusive, but also very knowledgeable regarding the menu and drinks (good choice for Pam's wine). Steaks were perfectly cooked and certainly the best I've had this year. Well done to all. Highly recommended and will definitely go back next time we are on the Ayrshire coast.

Absolutely fabulous and great food, me and my fiancé love it.

Had the mid week special, being the steak,eggs and waffle board. Steak was cooked bang on medium rare and the triple fried chips were awesome. For desert I had the celebration of honey, it was superb.

Excellent food and really great front of house staff. We were really well looked after by Katie and Vitalius. The pidgin and scallops starters were excellent. The rabbit and Wagyu mains were really tasty and we shared a honey dessert which was very well executed. Full marks to the chefs. We will be back next time we are in the area.

Three of us. Excellent staff, friendly, helpful and professional. Three for the seared Scottish salmon in a steakhouse? No problem for them, for any group not total carnivores who might wonder about being with steak eating friends. Very enjoyable evening. Over from Ireland otherwise I'd be visiting often and taking friends there. Highly recommended.

Simply the best restaurant I’ve been to, steaks second to none,service second to none, Been a few times and never disappointed

Another wonderful evening at the Drunken Coo. We headed upstairs to the cocktail lounge for a drink before dinner. The cocktails here are amazing, Andy is so incredibly creative, not totally sure of the name, but I think it was a cucumber gimlet & was light & refreshing. New Pinot Grigot on the wine menu was an instant hit. We both had fillet steak, cooked to perfection. I love the Cafe de Paris butter, do delicious. Being too full for dessert I did manage to sneak a couple of strawberries & some basil ice cream from my husbands strawberry souffle. Absolutely perfect combination. Soufflés are always so light, well done to the Drunken Coo for being one of the only places I've come across to offer soufflés. The whole team here are outstanding, Michael & Vitalijus are gracious hosts, Donna, Sophie & Katie are a joy to chat with & always brighten our evening. The back of house team are superstars. The restaurant was busy, as it was the Airshow weekend & everything we had was superb. This is by far the best restaurant in Ayr, very grateful it's on our doorstep.

This is a deceptive restaurant, it looks from the outside like a lot of other restaurants but it's actually a lot better than most. The food quality was surprising, between us we had the langoustines, monkfish paella, tuna salad, Chicken schnitzel burger, salmon and another kind of burger. All of the dishes were really good. The langoustines were superb. We had two children who chose chicken goujons wih chips which were ate without complaint! I noticed there wasn't any vegetables but it didn't matter as they shared my salad. There's also an excellent starter, which is a selection of bread, doesn't sound very exciting but it's wonderful. My son said the baobun starter he had was delicious and he would've happily had a bowl full of them as a main. The desserts were interesting too. The wine menu was good, not too big with a well chosen selection of wines to choose from. Yes, it is a steak house but on the night, none of us fancied one and whoever is in charge of the kitchen, has made the time to make the alternatives very worthwhile. Must make a comment about the staff, who were lovely, they didn't hover but they were there when needed. There's also a very nice cocktail lounge which we didn't notice until we left. Had we known, we would've definitely had a cocktail first, then gone on to the restaurant. Maybe next time!

We had a 9:30pm table booking for food. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted by friendly smiles and guided to our table, swiftly offered water and handed the menus. With a couple of tasty cocktails ordered to the table, our friendly waitress took our order of the calamari (light bite) - pictured, the rosemary wagyu steak, and the mixed grill. The taste was phenomenal, meat perfectly cooked, and when we were both defeated by the portion sizes, the waitress came over to collect our plates. A short consult later with our second stomachs about dessert, we ordered the pistachio raspberry tart, which again was stand out 🤌 All of the staff were absolutely wonderful and if we're ever in Ayr again, we will definitely be back. Sure it was expensive, but worth every penny. Thanks for a wonderful night!

My favourite steak experience of 2023 so far, the New York striploin was amazing in every way.

This was my first visit and I was hesitant as I thought it was slightly out of my price range but oh my goodness you do get what you pay for here. To be honest I would have happily paid more than what they charged for what I got, it was that good! The service was 5 star service, the atmosphere was perfect, the wine was right up my street and the food was probably the best food I have ever eaten. Overall probably the best meal I've ever had and will definitely be back again for more. (We had the Chateaubriand, Rioja, Soufflé and the parfait desert thing)

Wonderful food and service in a Great setting

Our first visit to the Drunken Coo and we will certainly be back. On arrival the restaurant suggested we have a drink in the upstairs bar which was a lovely relaxing way to start the evening. Our starters (small plates) of blue cheese mousse and smoked duck were excellent. I love any opportunity to eat local produce and the Troon langoustine were sweet and delicious. My husband couldn't finish his tasty dirty burger. It was huge. The lovely staff recommended the strawberry soufflé for dessert and they were spot on. A lovely surprise was the additional drinks and dessert for my husband's birthday. Really exceptional food quality and service. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Have frequented the Coo on a few occasions since opening I can confidently say I Have never had a bad meal. The steaks are beautiful. Portions are plentiful. Staff are true professionals and you are always guaranteed a fabulous evening. Cocktails are delicious and I highly Recommend a relaxing pre dinner drink in the cocktail bar upstairs. Highly recommend!

Food great but customer service skills extremely poor. They forgot to deduct our deposit from our bill. When I telephoned the same evening to request this money back, they said they could not put it on my card. Said they could only transfer it into my bank a/c. Ended up going in to get cash from them......unsure if I would return....manager needs to upgrade his customer service skills! Waitresses were all lovely tho!

OK I never order steak because I am always disappointed. Well...here I was blown away. We had wagyu steak with half lobster. OMG it was awesome. Best steak ever, really perfect. Dessert was scrumptious and staff really lovely. Thank you to Michael who was kind enough to swop my garlic mash for yummy triple fried chips. We have been before and the standard it excellent. My new fav place....

Great food and extremely friendly, helpful staff.

Great service but the 2 Tbones me & my son had was not cooked properly. The inside was as we asked but the meat was very tough & the outside edging was not seared & the edging fat (&some meat) was uneatable. Just the bone should be left when finished. Worse Tbone for me..shame 😕

Wonderful steakhouse with superb food and five-star service. We had the ribeye and the mixed grill, meats were succulent and cooked to perfection. The onion rings though...my god... has to the be best onion rings I've had in my 37 years of living. And I'm from the US, that loves deep fried anything. Can't wait to try it again! Went with friends last night. Meal was amazing. This is my 6th visit. Never disappoints. Will be back.

Walked in on spec as I couldn’t find anything else that looked half decent and expected to fine a run of the mill, formula, provincial high street steakhouse. How wrong I was. The menu, the cooking, the staff and the ambience were all top class and quite individualistic. The wine menu was excellent and well balanced. Yes, some of the dishes were expensive, but hey, wagyu beef don’t come cheap. One dish at least was underpriced, that was the cheeseboard. The waiting staff were well trained and well informed, it’s a long time since I’ve been to a restaurant where the waiter advised us not to have two cheese boards as one at £13 would be more than enough to share, and how right he was; not only were there a wide variety of cheeses, but they were all in top condition AND we took half of it home in a doggy bag! The owner/manager/maitre’d took the trouble to do a walkabout checking all was well and we got chatting. When he realised that we’d finished our bottle of wine and had nothing to drink with our cheese, he disappeared, then returned with a couple of glasses of an expensive claret on the house, which he wanted our opinion on. It’s individual acts of hospitality like this that turn a good experience into a great experience. Well done the Coo and long may you prosper.

Food was really nice, steak cooked to perfection and enjoyed the sides. The cafe de paris is a must! We enjoyed cocktails in the lounge pre dinner which were great. The lounge has a chilled atmosphere. Staff were brilliant, took time to chat and explain menu & wine choices. Only thing I would change would be the chips as they were massive!

Excellent midweek meal, no need to go to Glasgow just come the the coo. Looked after very well. Food was tremendous. Special smoke and fire board. Everything delicious. Pork was outstanding. Will be back soon.

Four of us went for dinner last night and all of us were very impressed with our meal. The food was first class and the service was exceptional. The cocktail bar and the restaurant in general has been fitted out and designed to a very high standard. Thoroughly enjoyable evening and we will definitely be going again.

The restaurant seemed to be trying to be a very high end establishment, with a formal approach, which the male front of house staff put forward in a not unfriendly, staid. The female server had a much fresher friendly approach. The food however was excellent...

Outstanding steaks cooked to perfection with a chargrill flavour. Excellent service, good wine list and a grown up menu make this a very special restaurant. You may need a doggie bag for the steaks though as they are huge. Great restaurants like this are few...

Outstanding food and service on a busy Hogmanay night. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and the food was simply amazing. We had the delicious scallop and Asian style pork belly starter. I could have eaten a bucket of that alone. Followed by rib eye steak cooked over charcoals exactly to our liking. We also added the langoustines and the crayfish Mac n cheese 🤩. Everyone cleared their plates! We went upstairs to the bar for a pick me up espresso martini which was also delicious. Worth every penny. We couldn’t fault a thing. Another very good and well cooked steak from this restaurant. Definitely the place to go in Ayrshire for a steak meal. Take plenty of money though.

A great place to eat or enjoy a drink

The wife and I have eaten at premier restaurants across the globe, and the food at The Drunken Coo stands equal to, or above, all of them. We were on a golf trip to Scotland/England/Ireland, and when in Ayr we asked what the best restaurant was... Decided to have a good meal at a fine restaurant. Wow. Shocker. The atmosphere was outstanding. The service was wonderful. The food was unbelievable. Literally everything from the bread to the appetizer to the meal to the dessert was just spectacular. The experience was really just impeccable all the way around. We're buying a home on the east coast of Scotland, but we'll be making regular trips across to Ayr, if for no reason other than to enjoy The Drunken Coo. Definitely try it if you're in the area.

Visited Drunken Coo for first time, special treat, went with best friends, both had Scallops for starter, two scallops in a nice plate for 13 pounds, nice but never again, no way value for money. Both couples had Chatibriand to share, decent amount of food...

Christmas work meal for 9 of us. First time visiting. Fantastic food, great service and lovely atmosphere. Price range to suit all budgets. Bread board is a must! Thank you. We will be coming again.

I first went here 3 months ago on a works night out - table of 10 and all 10 loved every course and the staff were amazing. My husband heard how much I loved it and booked his works night out on Friday last week...

Nice restaurant, friendly staff and good service. Unfortunately my wife and had mussels which were very tasty. But wthin 6 hours ww both suffered from food poisoning for 36 hours.

You get what you pay for at The Drunken Coo. Absolute first rate food.

Had a lovely birthday meal this Friday evening. Well presented and attentive staff plus timely service of both drinks and food. The atmosphere is cosy, classy and "Instagrammable" which complements the food and service perfectly. There was a varied selection of wine, lager (bottle & draught) and spirits plus a few non alcoholic options to chose from. We had a range of meals on the menu from the Wagyu Hanger Steak (pictured), Tandoori Chicken Burger (also pictured) plus both Fillet and T Bone steaks. The specials on offer included Veal & Venison which all sounded excellent. All steaks were cooked exactly as requested with clean plates all round from our party of 6. The accompaniments such as triple cooked chips and Onion rings were very well done (excuse the pun) and the steak sauces were rich and flavorful. If I'm truly honest, the Fillet was better than the Wagyu IMO. I think it's down to the fact that the Fillet is of extremely high quality whereas the Wagyu would have been fair to middling quality (given that both dishes were roughly the same price). A very enjoyable experience all round and I would happily go back to sample more of what The Drunken Coo has to offer!

What an amazing place, stopped in for some food after looking for a steakhouse online, great friendly atmosphere with chatty staff who made you feel very welcome, We had the wagyu sharing platter which was by far the best piece of steak I've ever had, kids meals were equally impressive and we all left with full bellies, definitely worth visiting if you are in the area.

Wow. £300 for 2 meals. One looked like a piece of dog shyyte, the other a steak from the premier inn. We travel a lot and know quality, ant this it ain’t it !!! . Save yer sheckles or go to Mac Donald’s. So disappointed...

Went for the midweek deal so superb value. Three steaks which we asked to be cooked three different ways. Each one absolute perfection! Great quality beef and delicious sides.
