The Drill Hall in Dover

I know times are tough right now, but not really and excuse to be frugal... My husband, son and I popped in here last week to grab a quick lunch, as we had visited the area to look at a house at lunch time, so were too famished to wait until we got home. The plan was to get a basic meal for sustenance so ordered 2 sandwiches (for myself and my husband) and a kids pizza for my son. The pizza arrived first, and was pretty standard (if a little pricey for what it was)... no major complaints. It was oven baked and looked and tasted okay. When the sandwiches arrived however, my husband and I just looked at each other as if to say 'is this it?'. The menu read well, and the selection of fresh ingredients looked very appetising. My husband had ordered a ham and gorgonzola sandwich and I ordered a herby sausage and caramelised onion. What we imagined we were getting versus what we actually got were world's apart. My imagination pictured a couple of plump gourmet sausages, slathered in sweet oozy red onions and wedged between two thick slices of fresh loaf... with a garnish of salad leaves. What I actually got was the equivalent of a half a crumbled sausage on two small slices of dry sour dough, with a teaspoon of thinly spread onions. My husband was similarly disappointed. Honestly? What was even the point. We were both so hungry after consuming our bland and meagre portions that we ended up consuming our sons discarded pizza crusts. My recommendation... charge a little more, but take some pride in what you serve your customers. I know times are tough, but better to build up a happy and loyal customer base who come back again and again for more.

The best pizza in East Kent. This place is a great restaurant and stopping off point for exploring the local area. The pizza is made from excellent ingredients and tastes better than even the pizzas on holiday ! The staff are approachable, service is fast, there are nice areas to sit for groups, couples and even a dog. Finish your meal off with locally made ice cream and you've got Sandwich's ideal lunch spot.

Popped in here on a Sunday afternoon for an ice-cream. Service was mixed, the 1st girl was great, friendly and attentive. (Red head with glasses) The second girl was unbelievablly rude, virtually throwing the ice creams at us ! Set up was a bit random, but had a nice atmosphere. Ice cream was nice but expensive, I asked for 2 scoops and got 1.....

The best pizza in the world (and I got to Italy a lot!) super venue, the gluten free options are excellent and the bar superb. The owners only use sustainable products and the service is superb.

A really nice experience with family. Pizzas were good but in the "less is more" range A little on the pricey side - if the pizzas had a little more toppings I think the prices would be correct Staff were very friendly and attentive Toilets could do with some tlc. We called in here for a lunch before heading home. We were against the clock due to car parking restrictions. The staff did their utmost to serve us as quickly as they could and we were delighted to enjoy a sandwich lunch and a drink. Food was good and the lunch was served with a smile. We will return, thank you.

We popped in after golf at the last minute and had a great evening. Lovely wood fired pizzas, great service and as a bonus we had entertainment in the form of a magician/mind reader which was highly entertaining and made for a great evening that we had not expected. The Drill Hall has an excellent menu especially for vegans, but is not exclusively vegetarian or vegan. The restaurant had a lovely chilled atmosphere, the staff were very friendly & helpful and the food and drink was as delicious and to top it off it is also dog friendly. I completely recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit if I am ever in this area again.

We had read that dogs are welcome, this is true, plenty of space if you choose you table well. Many pizza choices, wood fired oven, good drinks list, pizza for dessert with ice cream, it was a good evening for reasonable money. Compostable plates and single use cutlery. It is on our revisit list

large pizzas for eat in or take away, traditionally cooked italian style, vast choice of pizza , slighlty more costly than I would like but very tasty, better than most high street pizza places

Paper plates and plastic cutlery are an eco contradiction but that’s how you get your dinner presented. Surety wooden cutlery is more environmentally focused? Maybe they don’t do washing up and the environment doesn’t come in to it. The food is delicious and artisan but I found it an overkill with certain ingredients- a minor point. Would I revisit? Possibly not especially with the array of tip options presented when you pay with a card. Surely a tip box is more discreet. As I say it’s all a bit of a contradiction.

We visited The Drill Hall in Sandwich, Kent for their ‘Tricky Tuesday’ event. This venue has such a great, quirky, arty atmosphere and the food is exceptional, especially the pizzas straight from the pizza oven - so fresh and tasty. Our waitress was so attentive, accommodating and friendly. The entertainment was an added bonus and so clever. Visit their website for other events. All in all a wonderful evening and we will definitely be going back!!

We were in Sandwich for the weekend and visited this restaurant after a long walk in the countryside.Warm welcome, including our dog and were seated and served very quickly. Very good Covid measures (tables spaced out, all staff wear masks, disposable/ecofriendly plates, bell on table to ring waiter/waitress). The pizzas are to die for and the gelato was very good as well! We'll definitely be back if in the area.

Just had a family lunch time meal at the Drill Hall. We each had a vegan pizza & were so very delighted with the quality, the service, the price & the tastes. We didnt stop there. We also tried their delicious vegan ice creams. The Drill Hall is opposite the beautiful River Stour. So just a very special dining experience indeed. We'll be back!!

Have passed by many times and finally decided to try when out for a bike ride. So glad we did, great choice of pizzas and the salad we shared was also nice. Everything was spotlessly clean and staff very friendly.

Down in Sandwich for a short break, popped in for a drink, and stayed for lunch. Service was excellent, social distancing etc perfectly organised. The IPA was great, as was the wine. Pizza absolutely delicious. Great place.

This place has a bit of a student vibe though the clientele was a mixture! The menu is basically pizza and ice cream. There is a huge choice of pizzas including a vegan selection; they can also do gluten free bases. My son described his pizza as one of the best he’d ever had. Good service and reasonable prices too.

Went last night to celebrate my Grandsons 15th Birthday - was perfect in every way - the organisation in these Covid times very well organised - the efforts they went to explain system great - the attentive service by Callum who was so good even to bringing a birthday cake to the table with lovely happy birthday singing - the pizzas were great -lovely wine - all in all a perfect evening. Thank-you so much - we are a family in catering so not the easiest to please! but I want to say Thank you for making this such a special evening and we were even allowed to take our 2 dogs - so rare these days - so glad you are there - We always go there when we go to Sandwich was my grandsons choice For his special day - highly recommend this place!

Although we were recommended this restaurant we were very underwhelmed. It’s a large atmosphere-less space which has been organised to meet with social distancing requirements. We were shown to uncomfortable canteen style bench seating even though there were many empty tables with chairs. We were told these were reserved even though we were in and out before any of them were used. The space did not feel clean and I found a hair on our table. The pizzas were undercooked and 2 of our party felt nauseous for the rest of the evening. Food was served on styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery making it hard to actually eat - and the bill? Almost £50 for 3 pizzas, a glass of tap water and two alcoholic beverages. Wouldn’t recommend and won’t be returning.

We turned up just after opening time and were efficiently dealt with, hand sanitizers by the door where we waited, not long, trace and tracked by staff..shown to a table of our choice...if you don’t like bench seating like us ask to be moved. Pleasant staff during awkward times. Food was excellent one pizza and a very nice salad more than enough for us. All in all and under Covid circumstances we can’t fault the Drill Hall. This is a great place with excellent pizza, beer and ice-cream. Nice space, lots of room. The service is a little slow but that is the only criticism.

Second time for us here - we aren’t local but came back for a special visit. Great pizzas, brilliant social distancing solutions. Most people taking away. We all had calzone - the teens had their normal margueritas folded. Garlic bread with pesto and mozerella was lush. Topped off by great ice cream. Portions big - calzone between two with a salad would have done for us but we couldn’t agree on which! Great vegan menu too!

This place is a little gem. The pizzas are amazing and the staff even better. They have really got post lockdown sorted and made us feel very relaxed with the way they are dealing with all the restrictions. It was very organised and a well thought out COVID secure environment. It’s obvious that a lot of thought, work and investment had gone into this, to make it work. The staff are so friendly, and happy to allow dogs inside, which is the perfect end to a long beach walk. A lovely relaxed atmosphere adds to a superb experience and the Pizza are fantastic.

We visited the Drill Hall last Wednesday just after the restrictions had been lifted. The social distancing was well managed and the staff were polite friendly and very good.What can I say best Pizza I have had outside of Italy in fact I would say better there is a wide choice including Vegetarian and Vegan will be visiting again and again

This place is great if you want low spec and casulIt's a large room with little furniture so was very noisy! This place boasts about its sourdough pizza and that is what brought us here on a recent tour of Sandwich. Unfortunately their pizza is actually made with yeast! ( I KNOW all you sourdough afficionados!)It is a small working area however, when i went, the owners were belittling their staff which is never something i want to witness.Toilets were none too clean but don;t want to put you off!I found the pizza mediocre and lacking in flavour....also seemed expensive for the area and qualityI only visit this area a few times a year so I doubt they will miss my custom but will be spending my money elsewhere in future

Our family have been using the Drill Hall on a regular basis ever since it opened, perhaps twice a month, or sp. It is exclusively a pizza restaurant, don't think you can even get chips (probably not a bad thing)! For desert they do a variety of ice creams and sorbets. Their pizzas are more expensive that most of the pizza chain restaurants; however, the quality of their pizzas more than compensates for the extra few pounds you have to pay. I don't think I've had a better pizza outside of Italy (perhaps not even there). The ice cream and sorbets, which I understand are made on site, are also fantastic, albeit a little more expensive than your regular ice cream vendor. Like all things in life, to get high quality you pay more. Personally, I think the Drill Hall is good value for money. Our regular visits willl continue.

Having been diagnosed with coeliac disease many years ago, eating a good pizza is a very rare treat. At the Drill House the owner knows exactly what's required to minimise risk! Dough is made away from everything else, his pinny is changed, the shovel that puts the pizza in the oven is scrubbed and there is a special work area. The pizza I got at the end of it was truly awesome! The base was thick and like a 'real' pizza and the toppings were yum! Thanks so much! I will be back!!

This is a knockout pizza parlour on the quayside in the wonderful town of Sandwich. It's called the drill hall because that's what to was previously I believe. It's an unconventional, large space which fits in well with ambience of the place. The pizzas are really excellent. They're authentically Italian in look and taste and are HUGE too - perfect.My favourite? The Amici Della Carne - hot, spicy and so big it's a real challenge, but I always pass the test!So should you. When in town give it a try. On the other hand, they do takeaways too.

Good wood-fired oven pizza after walking from Deal to Sandwich - we visited lunchtime on a Saturday in Feb there were a couple of booked parties in but luckily space enough for all including dogs...plenty of choice including GF & drinks/ full bar. Typical prices & gin-of-the-day sounding good plus gelato ice-cream but we didn't have room!

I first visited the Drill Hall back in 2019. Now, I don't usually like pizza, only due to personal preference, but when I ate the truffle mushroom pizza (cant remember the name) it blew my mind into a different dimension. The crisp, the flavor, the EVERYTHING! from the moment I walked in until the moment I left, the smile on my face was everlasting due to the festival of flavors that remained in my mouth. the service - absolutely bloody 10/10. From the moment I walked into the Drill Hall I knew it was a friendly place. The smiles, the kindness the energy is exactly what we need. To be able to sit and eat some delicious food and feel comfortable like you're in your own home? absolutely, yes please! I make visiting The Drill Hall a priority, my friends, family love it and we visit religiously once a fortnight. Every pizza/Gelato i had tasted has stayed with me, and I will always be adventurous with Pizzas as i know I have full trust at the Drill Hall! Guys, just go. Take your dog for a walk down the river and stop in. It will not be a regret. Outstanding service, outstanding food. OH, and not to mention the excellent Vegan and Gluten free menu!

We can't praise the Drill Hall highly enough. We booked well in advance for a large family birthday event for up to 30 people aged from 4 months to 86! The owners and staff were incredibly helpful, allowing us to bring our own decorations and providing pizzas for varying diets. Service was quick and we loved the fact that young children were welcomed. We even brought our own birthday cake! Big thank you Drill Hall for making this birthday event a very happy one!

Ok, we came here on a Thursday night. Ordered at the bar and our pizzas were brought over relatively quickly. Lovely pizzas. Only one thing I would say is that they should have two separate que's, one to order food etc.. but another if you just want to order drinks etc. As I would imagine at the weekend it would be very busy and if you had food and wanted another drink, you would spend a while in the que etc... apart from that, very tasty!!

Called in for lunch today after hearing lots of good reviews. We’d always been put off by the thought of eating off of paper plates with plastic cutlery sat around patio furniture. Pizzas were ok but had better - service really poor - 2 lads on more focussed on chatting than serving us. Pizzas arrived plonked on table and walked off. No advising us where cutlery was etc. I went over to ask and he dismissively pointed at the corner. Food hygiene wasn’t good with someone going into the kitchen area to make food for himself and one of the staff members munching on pizza whilst serving. Despite fact we were only ones in neither of the 2 staff came to check all was ok. There is no need to eat off of paper plates and have plastic cutlery. They’ve got loads of space to have a dishwasher and it’s much better environmentally. It is utterly ridiculous. And as for the patio furniture ...They’re charging normal restaurant prices but the overall experience is low budget. Lacklustre effort which is somewhat typical of a lot of the establishments in Sandwich that is stuck in c1970 still.

Eaten here several times as locals and as regulars for gelato in the summer-went as a family this evening-ordered my favourite usual pizza with fennel sausage-out of the 8/10 slices on my pizza on only one slice had 3 little ‘blobs’ of fennel sausage -didn’t make a fuss but when a passing member of staff came by I asked if I could possibly have a bit of the sausage, being the reason that it was why I had especially ordered that particular pizza-I watched him mention this to another staff member ,they looked over at me and went to the pizza chef,had a discussion,looked at me again and then sent someone back to me-that person then said that if I wanted more sausage I had to pay for it as that was the amount that the pizza came with- I double checked with him that they were happy that only one slice of the whole pizza came with that amount of sausage and he said yes ,you’ll have to pay if you want more.

Arrived to a cold reception in every way, this restaurant is freezing. It started badly and went down hill from there. Diners eating with their coats on. Plastic furniture and cutlery.

No heating, garden furniture to sit on, disposable cutlery, reasonably priced food. If you do go, ask to sit next to the pizza oven, it’s the warmest place! I Wouldn’t bother again!

Rather expensive meal seeing as you have to order at the bar and the fact that the seating is garden furniture so the seating height isn't ideal for eating. Elbows in the air. Found the need to take cushions from other seats to bolster the whole family (were not short either). Nice pizzas and cooked in an open plan kitchen on a clay oven but still a little too much for the overall experience.

We first ate pizza when it was an oven on a van in the Guildhall Square and the owner also did a corporate party. We enjoyed the pizzas then. He has since expanded and moved into The Drill hall an it’s a great move. We loved it the moment we stepped in. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the ethos hasn’t changed and the pizzas are the most flavoursome pizzas we have eaten. Everything is homemade - even the ice cream. No plastic. Plenty of choice, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. There’s a bar too. They have drinks of the week, the gin last night was really tasty. Already planning a return visit with friends. Wonderful. Best evening out that I have had for a while.

Honestly, the best gluten free pizza I have EVER had. It was so amazing that I was concerned that it wasn’t GF (obviously it was, but it was THAT good!) dog friendly too. Just brilliant.

Fantastic pizza. Amazing best in sandwich. On the 14th December a group of my friends and I visited the drill hall. 5 star pizza and it is reasonably priced. Can’t wait to come back.

Great atmosphere, great products and choice of Pizza. Have eaten here on many occasions and have never been disappointed.

What a lovely place to go really friendly staff the pizzas are fantastic probably the best pizza I've had in years and really good value for money it knocks spots of any of the chain restaurants that call themselves pizza parlours definitely worth a visit

Very good pizza party for 16 medievalists, we did the whole range from vegan and fish to classic and meat freak fest!

Have been here a few times. Normally, I think goi g out for a pizza is a waste of time as it is always a disappointment until ...l we went to The Drill Hall in Sandwich. Brilliant sourdough pizza and great friendly people there. Browse the art on the walls while your pizza is being cooked in their authentic wood fired oven ... eating amazing pizza and then go home with an amazing loaf of their fresh baked bread. Totally hooked on this place. It is so good!

Visited today following a recommendation and wasn’t disappointed. Pizzas were very flavourful and I will be returning with friends later on.
