Booked for two nights to celebrate our 20th anniversary. All members of staff were absolutely first rate, courteous and extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The newly refurbished room was very well appointed with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco to help us celebrate, very much appreciated. All the meals were had there were fantastic, good value and delicious. We look forward to returning in the future. Thank you!

Nice location and the restaurant is spacious, with a relaxing atmosphere. Our waitress was lovely and very attentive. The food is overpriced for what it is and the kids burger meal is the exact same size as an adults burger meal but twice the price. We had to send 2 meals back as they were unedible. They were knocked off our bill and they sent there apologies. Overall average meal and very pricey for what it is.

£17.70 for a pint of beer and a large glass of sauv blanc. That's pretty much Mayfair prices - not bad inside but there are other pubs nearby folks. Avoid if you value your hard earned.

Service was polite however slow. Aperol Spritz very weak. Chairs and tables are worn. Little comfort to the chairs. Meals are quite pricey for the portion size. The burger was a children’s portion. The size of the lamb meal was meagre too. My noodles were overcooked sludge. The building is very nice, but I was expecting a decent gastro pub. We will not return here. Probably this establishment benefits from a lot of passing trade. They need to review value for money.

We were staying in the area for the weekend. I had dismissed this pub due to some of the poor reviews. However, the pub opposite had stopped serving food so we gave here a try instead. Overall am pleased we did. I had a steak, this was nice although a little pricey for what you got. My husband had the cottage pie, which he said was tasty but the gravy was burnt. We asked for some new gravy, which we got but it was stone cold so we sent it back. By the time the replacement came he had finished his dinner. Automatically the lady serving apologised and gave us free drinks. That was a nice touch and really good customer service. We stayed for some more drinks that evening and also visited the next night for a few drinks. It’s a nice pub with a good atmosphere.

We had a lovely lunch of fish and chips and the staff were very friendly. Our dog was made to feel very welcome and there was plenty of space for her by our table. We had been attracted by the offer of lunch with a drink for £13.50 but were told it wasn’t available at this pub, but at others in the chain. However it was clearly on this pub’s website. The staff did apologise but no complimentary drink was offered. I emailed the company that afternoon but have not had a reply,

At the end of a long hike, we thought hearty pub food and a drink would be good. We walk here quite a lot , so were looking for a well placed eatery. Good atmosphere , warm and pleasant staff … a good start. Our food took a long time to appear. My honey roast ham and piccalilli ,half sandwich proved to be a thumbs width of commercial white sliced bread , two, three inch chibbles of ham and a teaspoon of piccalilli. The accompanying soup was very cool....one third of a dish........cost for both..........£12.00 My partner had the Garlic mushrooms on a three and a half inch square of sourdough with a solid yolked poached egg and no evidence of spinach, as advertised....£11.50. No-one asked us about the meal, I don't normally photograph food , but I wished I had. We felt , not just disappointed , but like we had been cheated. Come on ! If this is sold as a lunch, make it so, for the money charged.

Avoid!!! Absolutely appalling rude bar staff, arrived on time and told to wait, which was fine however when we got to the table the restaurant was far from full s ok I have no idea why we were made to wait. We were given menus to read in the crowded bar, had to try and get 11 of us in the bar area with a disabled lady and a pram while we waited to then be told extremely rudely we were in the way! I had emailed prior to us coming to ask if they could do something for mums birthday, most places do in the form of a candle in a piece of cake or ice cream or something just as a gesture to make her feel special. The food was lovely however after paying a significant bill including tip as the waitress was nice it became apparent they weren’t going to offer any gesture so we asked if they could bring her a cocktail or something, absolutely no problem paying for it if they believe it isn’t courtesy to just offer her this when just paid over £400 for the staff to come up to the table in front of the birthday girl asking how we are going to pay! Asked to speak to the manager who did offer to refund but isn’t the point. When we challenged the charge for something we presumed to be complimentary, the manager was clearly being derogatory towards my husband and nephew. Do not go here if you want a nice experience as the customer service is disgusting. Totally spoilt a lady’s 80th birthday.

We have eaten here a few times before and it was a good experience each time. Once, I had what may possibly be the best (though pricey) burger I have ever eaten. We have also had Sunday lunch and fish and chips there: both good. We like the design of the restaurant: it is spacious and doesn't get too loud even with lots of customers. The staff are efficient and friendly. It, and they, are dog-friendly. This time the food let it down. My wife had a terrine then trout with roasties. Both were OK, but what she described, kindly, as "portion-controlled"... on the small side. I had goat's cheese and beetroot tortellini, then chicken and ham hock pie. There were just four tortellini. I would definitely have more at home. One was OK, but the other three had hard pasta: either undercooked or just dried out. The filling was pleasan enough: no more. The pie came with mash (OK), a portion of cabbage, carrot and other veg and a pot of gravy. This gravy looked suitable for serving with beef: dark brown and I guess the only gravy they had. I didn't bother with it. I could see that the pie was not home made, unlike at some other pubs in the area. When I tried to cut the top it refused to yield to my knife. I eventually got into it by using my knife like a dagger... stabbing it. The whole crust was incredibly hard. I couldn't eat much of it. Inside there was a white sauce with some very small pieces of chicken and ham. It tasted OK, but not special; it really was short of meat. My wife had a half of a session IPA which was very nice, but £3.40 for a half? Would we go back? Possibly, as this may have been a one-off bad day. If we do go back I will post another review.

My wife and I arranged to meet our younger daughter at the Devonshire Arms for lunch and to have a look round Baslow, as we are thinking of retiring to the area. I had been craving a Ploughman's Lunch for a period of time, so was delighted to see it on the lunch menu and decided to order it. Well, when it arrived, I could not have been more disappointed. On the menu, it stated that it came with both ham and cheese and farmhouse bloomer. Firstly, the cheese was missing and the farmhouse bloomer was one pathetic slice of stale sourdough bread. My wife pointed out to the manager that there was no cheese on the plate and I asked for some proper bread. Well......the cheese was quarter of a small truckle of Bombardier cheese from the Snowdonia cheese company and the bread was a couple of slices from a white sliced loaf. Bearing in mind we were in Derbyshire, a county that makes wonderful cheese, why was I being offered a mass-produced cheese made in North Wales and why was I not given bread from one of the artisan bakers in neighbouring villages. The answer is of course cost and management that couldn't give a sh*t !!! Oh and the price for this pathetic excuse for a Ploughman's Lunch .......£ 13.50 !!!!! Yes, that's right £ 13.50. It is no wonder that the terrace was virtually empty on a sunny Friday lunchtime in August. With management that cares about what they are doing, a capable chef in the kitchen and a menu that sparks the imagination, this pub should be full on a Friday lunchtime in August. Need I say more. Seriously disappointed and will not be back. We might have to look for somewhere else to live as we are intending to have many leisurely lunches in our local pub in our retirement, just don't think it will be the Devonshire Arms.

When we eventually received our food it was excellent and we didn’t leave a scrap. We’d chosen lamp rump and chicken & ham pie. However, we had to wait 55 minutes for our meals to arrive and had to chase up twice. Apparently the lamb rump takes 30 minutes to cook in their usual style. We’d asked for it to be well cooked which, apparently, was the cause of the additional delay. We weren’t told when initially ordering that the lamb would take 30 minutes. When our meals were brought out we were asked if we’d already paid, which we had. Must admit I’m wondering if there would have been some recompense had we not paid. We both had drinks and didn’t need additional ones which were offered. No-one bothered to ask us, either during the meal or when we’d finished, if everything was ok. I’ve worked in customer service for decades and know you have to take it on the chin when you’ve messed up. Hiding away doesn’t look good.

We had the sharing starters which were ok we had the hummus, tempura, arrancini and chicken wings . Then we had the fish and chips - there was more batter than fish and was overcooked and the chips were cold, the chicken schnitzel was also overcooked and very dry and the chips all cold and we also had the trout which was very overcooked and the vegetables hard and cold. The staff were friendly and brought fresh chips and took a meal off the bill . However the overall quality of the food was extremely poor . The wine was good value and nice . There were very few people eating in the restaurant clearly a sign we should have noticed ! We decided not to have a coffee or dessert and went to Il Lupo across the road where we had eaten previously which were lovely .

This place really suffers from an identity crisis. Its menunis so disjunctive. Occa Bussi, Scampi or Peruvians Areyas? It’s very strange and none of it very good. The lobster thermadore croquettes Al were truly insipid. Why would you encase thermador sauce in a croquette? You...

Fab food and staff. Met friends here for a meal, lovely setting in the round restaurant room. Food was great and the staff were fab, professional, friendly and a credit to the restaurant. Would definitely eat here again.

We had to complaint as our hanging chicken kebab was over cooked and the flat bread that came with it was burnt. By the time they replaced the flatbread I had finished my meal.

We stopped off on our way past for a spot of lunch and decided to eat in the bar. Lovely relaxed feel, with helpful but not annoyingly overattentive staff. The food is very definitely worth the premium price tag - every bite of every dish...

Purchased a 99 and one for my partner from the van £10 what a rip off when challenged answered very arrogant it is Bakewell and I pay £40,000 for pitch. Rubbish ice cream and even worse service. Never again.

Great little pub, properly known as Rose Cottage, in the oldest building in the village. Good beers well kept, excellent food in generous portions. Dog friendly but NB no children and, being such an old building, no disabled access (steps to premises, steep stairs to loos).
