Popped in here for lunch as it looked busy and cosy from the outside. We both had wild mushrooms - hen of the woods, king oyster etc. with garlic on toasted sourdough. Most delicious and a generous portion. Would definitely come back here.

Have had great coffee here on two occasions recently. Always popular and busy but the staff are very motivated and are very efficient. I will say how much I miss the upstairs osteria that they once supported. It was a fantastic limited menu eatery that was fabulous for lunch and supper. With Jano gone too real Italian food has gone from Totnes. Anyway coffee will have to do for the while.

Lovely location and the food on the whole was nice, some of it really good. However, some could have been improved given bread whilst ordering which was a nice touch but it was a bit stale and there was no oil for dipping. Tiramisu also had hard sponge in it. Welcomed by a lovely waitress who explained the menu. The service after this was not good. Took a long time for the food to come out we were there for 2 1/2 hours for 3 courses! We wanted to order a second round of drinks but were ignored by waiting staff. One of the guests on the table asked for an additional drink others tried ordering after and the waiter just walked off. Pretty unacceptable considering it's a small place with only 4 tables. Shame that the service really let it down because it could have been a real gem.

When I visited this little gem it was one of only a few cafes open - most strange towards the end of an April afternoon - and being a wet day the pavement couldn't be used, so inside was packed and I got a seat on a high chair against the wall. No matter. The coffee was excellent, as was the cake. I wouldn't have had room to settle to a bigger meal, but that can be left for next time.

Nice place, very friendly staff, with a limited but original and interesting menu. The starter (burrata) was excellent, the fettuccine with smoked ricotta very good, but the secondo (aubergine £11.50 - the only vegetarian option) was a miniature dish perhaps more appropriate as a small starter: half of a very small aubergine with a bit of crusty top on bland blended onion and tomatoes sauce. The dessert was a disappointment (lemon tart): the pastry was hard and cold, and then it is certainly not an Italian cake at all. The food is good but overall the experience not totally satisfactory - the dessert selection was disappointing (the ubiquitous tiramisu', affogato, and the lemon tart..

I recommend the £35 per head menu which means if you are a party of 4 you get to try everything if you are happy sharing. I live in the area and have visited several times and each time I have lived in hope that:- the portions were a bit bigger, and the meals tasted more Italian, cooked properly and there were a few more nice 'continental kitchen' touches such as - some dipping oil for the bread. The service was ok , polite , but slightly forgetful . The wine was very good . I could have cooked a far better meal . It was extremely poor . We were a table of 6 and all of us said later we would not return . Sad as its been good in the past . Went for an evening meal following our River Dart cruise to Dartmouth and back. How nice not to have to wade through a mammoth list of pasta and pizza dishes. The menu was distinctly different and varied. I was more adventurous than my wife and went for the Italian Experience at £35. This included a small whole mackerel (I much prefer fish with their heads on!), hake risotto and a lamb chop all supported by plenty of veg and salad. Rounded off with a Panettone bread & butter pudding. it's a small intimate dining experience and seemingly popular - we booked for just after 6 pm and it soon filled up.

A friend and I ate here on 22 June while visiting totnes on the recommendation of a number of taxi drivers. Both vegetarian we called to book and there was a slight pause after we announced this fact, followed by an “okay”. Two hours later we arrived looking forward to a lovely meal. The veggie option on one board was an interesting sounding ravioli, the other board it said wild mushroom linguine. Both big ravioli fans we ordered this to be told it had sold out and the linguine was in its place. Appreciate the kitchen had to make something quickly when their flagship dish ran out but this was such a disappointing to say the least. Clearly a rush job and nothing more sophisticated than I’d do at home with a bit of cream, a few mushrooms and some garlic.

I usually visit for lunch and coffee once or twice a month on a weekday. The rustic dining room with its open kitchen is upstairs, so I'm not sure it would be accessible to everyone. The food is typically Italian - straightforward and flavoursome, the service is warm and friendly, the atmosphere is laid-back and the coffee is exceptional. Attentive but not intrusive. Informative about the dishes and good wine knowledge to help you enjoy each dish. However not pretentious so if you simply want beer , cider or a cocktail then these are catered for too.Wonderful food in an amazing atmosphere.Well done and thank Matteo and team.

A small dining room above the Curator Cafe on the Plains in Totnes. We were greeted and seated and then ignored for about 10 minutes. The waitress was getting coffees from the downstairs cafe and chef was chatting to a couple who had already eaten. Finally we ordered and the phone rang and the waitress rushed to answer, so the order was partly ordered for food only without the opportunity to order drinks, which were ordered later when the phone call was finished. One order was for Fettucine Ragu, this was tasty but a small portion in a small bowl at £9.50 ( and we don't have a large appetite ). The other main was Farinata with smoked Tuna, which sounded nice and was ordered as a small plate ( £7.50 ) so I didn't expect a huge portion but this was disgusting, the farinata was as tough as a piece of rubber, with a few rocket leaves, several bitter marinated orange segments and the thinnest shavings of tuna possible. With sparkling water the bill was £18.50 and we are one local couple who will not be returning.

Nice food, slightly over-priced. Small place, limited menu, Italian-style food, pleasant decor. Friendly service. Visited in Jan - not warm enough even when sat by radiator.

My brother has been raving about this place for months so me and my girlfriend thought we better try it out. We ordered salted cod for starters but it was ridiculously salty, couldn't taste anything but salt (at the end the waitress told us someone else complained about it and that the chef must of left in the salt too long). Then on to the main courses, which were all very small. I think that if you charging high prices and there is little food then the taste has to be exquisite. The cod pasta we ordered was tiny and had absolutely no flavour, it might be homemade but it was very, very bland. The lamb shank was average but by then we were so disappointed with the meal that it didn't matter. I think i'll some it up by saying that the side dish of cabbage (apart from the shank) was the most tasteful part of our meal.

Another great addition to the Totnes food scene. Above the best cafe in town is a stripped to the essentials osteria. Authentic flavours of a kind you rarely get outside of Italy; cooked and presented with flair. Totnes is becoming the new Ludlow: exciting to see, and eat!

Small rustic restaurant. Relatively small 'blackboard' menu full of country Italian dishes. Freshly prepared. Great food. Attentive service. Good value. Book in advance as limited covers!

It seems the restaurant is in a phase of miss instead of hit. Such a shame as food in the past has been good. Really small portions to share in their festive feast at £25 per head. Small side plates of food brought up at irregular times to start followed by the meanest main serving anyone in our group of over 20 people had been out for. One slice of pork with two carrot batons and a teaspoon of cabbage for most people... some didn't even get the veg! Poor excuses such as "we are short staffed in the kitchen" was not acceptable given that the menu was pre-booked. My complaint direct to the restaurant over a week ago has still not been responded to, our party was really disappointed.

What an extraordinary and wonderful find, a genuine and warmly buzzing osteria in Totnes near the river serving authentic regional Italian foods, mainly inspired from Le Marche. We had taken the train to Totnes to get here, a journey of about an hour, and it was really worth the effort. We all chose the tasting menu, which is five courses (antipasto, primo, secondo, contorno and dessert) chosen from any of the items on the menu that is chalked up on a board. Just as well as we could have eaten every single dish on the whole menu (this way, we almost did, as we ordered a variety of dishes that we all shared so that no one had food envy). To start, some olive all'ascolana (deep-fried olives!) with a spritz or a negroni. A gorgeous pumpkin gnocchi was one stand-out dish, as was a thick piece of brill served on a bed of soft polenta with mushrooms and a porcini purée; a pannacotta made with smoked beer was just astonishing. The wine list is very short, consisting of primarily 3 varieties of Verdicchio and 3 different Rosso Conero wines, imported direct from small producers. What a treat: the wines of Le Marche are some of Italy's best, even though they are not widely encountered. These examples were outstanding, naturally produced vini genuini, full of character and personality. Service was friendly and knowledgable - dishes were explained lovingly; I asked about the different wines and was given excellent advice. We caught the train home feeling happy and replete: all in all it was a wonderful little road trip. We look forward to returning again soon!

This place used to be a polite restaurant with white tablecloths and it felt very Georgian. It couldn't be more different now! It's much smaller than it was, with a slightly shabby chic contemporary feel. It was busy and noisy on a Friday evening. The food is delicious and varied - there were enough of us to have one of everything on the menu and we left nothing. Comparisons are inevitable. In mood and ambience I guess the closest place is Rumour. In food the closest comparison is Jano's. Both of these comparisons are compliments. The only thing I dislike is also the thing I dislike about Rumour - it's incredibly noisy and not the sort of place to go for a quiet romantic dinner for two.

Excellent, as always! This is the third time I've been to the Totnes Osteria and I'm happy to say that the food is still top notch (first visit spring '16). This time I visited with my family to celebrate my birthday. We opted for a la carte and shared a selection of dishes so that we could all try a range of different things. Everything was delicious, some stand-outs were: salt cod on thinly toasted bread (I forget the Italian name); superb home-made spaghetti with fresh crab and just the right amount of chilli seasoning; mackerel baked in paper with kale and capers. Our waiter, Oliver, was friendly, organised and very attentive. He carefully explained the menu and how many plates to order, and recommended good wines, too.

We dropped in on a recommendation, and had a lovely evening. Our server was really helpful and didn't make us feel like ejits for not knowing what some of the foods are (so make sure you ask), we also had dietary requirements which were managed really well. We had a taster menu (make sure you are hungry if you go for this option). There were things we loved and things we weren't as keen on but that's what a taster menu is! Even the food we weren't as keen on wasn't because it was badly cooked, it just wasn't to my taste or husbands taste (e.g. I wasn't partial to the cavolo Nero, but I tried it!).We thought it was really good value, and loved the casual atmosphere and watching the chefs do their thing.

After hearing much about the Curator we booked on a Thursday in August. The service was very freindly and care was taken to walk us through the menu. The two meals we had were very different. My wife's Rock Bass was very good, unfortunately my pork was not. It would have helped if we had been asked if our meals were ok, but I eventually had to call a member of staff over. The deserts saved it really, but touch and go if we go back. For the prices it should be better.

This was the fourth visit for us, about 2 weeks ago. A table for 6 in the new second floor dining room. Great atmosphere. Great service. We all had the tasting menu with a good variety of dishes. A mixed offal starter was a highlight - cooked in a rich sauce. But a crab pasta dish and a fresh mackerel main course were also superb. Deserts were also excellent. The wine list is also very good and the staff happy to make suggestions from their extensive knowledge. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Curator Kitchen.

I can't begin to explain how disappointed I am with my last experience at the Curator Kitchen and it saddens me to leave this review, I have been to the Curator Kitchen in the past and had a great time from which I've recommended it to a lot of people and highly rated it but after my last experience will unfortunately not be doing anymore...We booked a table for 8 of which 7 of us chose the £30 a head set menu of which you each get a dish off each course, what this boiled down to was only one plate of either dish between all of us, consisting of small portions which amounted to no where near the amount we paid! (3 small lamb cutlets between 7 people is just a joke and one the starters only contained 6 portions)It was more frustrating to see a table of 6 opposite us go for the same option and somehow get the same size portions? And the most insulting thing of all was that the 8th person in our party chose to order 2 things from the menu separately, they never even got their food... We were just told that it was 'merged' with the rest of our food! If two people go out for a meal and order the same dish, in no way do you ever expect it to get condensed onto one plate, this is seriously slack and unprofessional! The quality of food was nice but nothing special, not as good as food I've ordered from here in the past and by no means ever worth the price tag.The overall aesthetics and atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, they have a good selection of wines and the service is alright. Overall its a better place to get a meal for two or a light lunch but expect to get seriously ripped off if you go here as a group looking for a worthwhile experience.

Sometimes I need reminding just how delicious, relaxing, and restorative good, simple, food can be. What things >can< taste like. And today, the Curator did that for me. The place was a little self-conscious at times, but I guess it has to be; in the UK, we lack a widespread culture of subtle, careful, everyday food. And you do pay a little (not much) more than you would if a place like this had more competition. But I'm so glad it's there. Just to remind me. Today: beautifully made bread, nicely dressed salads, well-sourced charcuterie and cheese. In a relaxed, small, but airy room. I feel the place has still got some settling in to do.. But I've been three or four times now, and I'll be with it all the way.

We came here for our 2 year wedding anniversary. We honeymooned in Italy so thought we'd try the 'Nice looking Italian down the road'. Well, we were blown away! Delicious, rustic food (better than any we had on honeymoon) served by excellent, knowledgable staff who were only too happy to help in a cosy, unpretentious setting. Thank you for making our anniversary a memorable one- we'll definitely be back again!

Down a small street leading off from the quayside sits this superb Italian restaurant. We had dinner one evening in November whilst we were staying in Dartmouth and I'm so glad we did. The bruschetta was brilliant but the pasta was exceptional and together with an amazingly tasty squash salad made for a great meal. The cosy and intimate feel of the restaurant was enhanced by the warm welcome and excellent service we received. On top of that, the drinks were sensibly priced with a good variety of wines on the menu. We had a great evening and I'm pretty sure you would too. We will certainly visit again when we are next in Dartmouth.
