The Crown & Thistle in Carlisle

Didn't manage to get a table as fully booked however had a pint and service was fantastic! Hope to come back another time but with a booking for food.

Lovely meal here after a long walks beside the River Eden. Very busy as it was Good Friday, but they found us a table even though we didn't book. The wait staff were super friendly and attentive. The Classic fish and chips I ordered was the best fish and chips I have ever had. A huge chunky portion of fish (cod?) kept very succulent in super crunchy batter. Astoundingly good. The chips were thick cut, very crunchy and soooooo good. It usually comes with mushy peas but they had no problem swapping that out for a salad which was very well made from diverse salad greens and a tasty dressing. Cannot recommend this dish enough. My partner had the French dip - roast beef in a brioche bun with caramelised onions, cumberland cheese & french mustard. Glazed with a honey butter, sea salt & baked. Served with rich beef gravy. It was delicious and filling - oh he had to have a side of those delicious chips! All the food was locally sourced and there was a great map on the chalkboard showing you where each local ingredient supplier was located. Brilliant local support - good one. The local Ullswater Blonde ale from Tirrel Brewery was delicious too! Thank you Crown & Thistle for a brilliant meal. Will definitely be back.

We have dined here on many occasions normally all is well. However on Easter Saturday it wasn't the table hadn't been cleaned it was very sticky. The menus were pretty grubby food splash marks a change of paper would certainly look cleaner and professional. We ordered steak one was cooked to perfection the other was very tough. The atmosphere is always the same good homely place. Always very busy it is advisable to book ahead.

My wife and I just Rocked up just after 11:30 this morning and immediately we were attended to buy a very nice waitress and the menus arrived very quickly as did the drinks. The menu was extensive and hard to choose however we did manage :-) thoroughly enjoyed our food and we would definitely be back again no question

What an absolute delight, so glad we popped in whilst whizzing past I. The motorway. Food was AMAZING, thank you chef! Service was impeccable, thank you servers. We plan to pop in again in the spring when we can enjoy a snack and some cold drinks, and stay over if there are rooms. Loved it.

Excellent birthday lunch. I had Pheasant and orange pate, my husband had haggis with egg on potato rosti to start and mains were 2 way duck and all the trimming and i had pulled lamb. Not like a pub lunch more like fine dining. Compliments to the chefs. A bit of a wait but it was busy and our mains were prepared to perfection so no complaints

Every time we are in Scotland we go here. We are in love with this restaurant! There is especially a great vegan selection. They make everything possible and we love it. The atmosphere is so nice too! Monthly, rustic and yet modern. Definitely reserve in advance! But it is clear that you have to come! Beer lovers will also get their money's worth here 🥰 we love you!

Visited today for the Festive Menu. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The staff were kept busy, but were able to provide an excellent service to all diners. They were very efficient, pleasant and friendly.

I have been there for a Sunday meal it’s jolly good I enjoy my Sunday meal I’ll give it five for everything for SERVICE it was very good the staff talk to you even the manager a good place to go to for a good meal and I hope you enjoyed whoever goes there thank you have no pictures

Hidden gem in Rockliffe just north of Carlisle. Outstanding food, superb service along with a warm friendly atmosphere. They were short staffed today, it the whole team were working fast, efficiently and with great attention to detail as done with a smile too - really impressed with their positive attitude. The menu offered a wide choice of different delicious dishes - if we lived closer we’d come in here all the time !!

Smashing! Extremely polite, friendly staff. Very, very busy but still managed to get us seated. Super clean, super efficient. Food was amazing. Good portions, fair price. Well done. Totally enjoyed our meal!

We were looking forward to come here with over people telling us it was good, Disappointed, Beef was tough and was cold, Guinness was watery. Didn’t get told about the specials. Disappointed

My first time visiting the Crown & Thistle. A lovely pub! The food was fantastic amongst table of 10, I can recommend the Cumbrian Pork Tasting main. The staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating throughout the evening. Will certainly be back.

The dining area is well layed out, good space between tables. The furniture works really well in the space too. Staff were very friendly and happy to give suggestions. It was pretty busy when we were there and it has a great atmosphere. Food was lovely and good value.

It was our first experience at the Crown and Thistle last night and certainly will not be our last 🙂 The whole experience was outstanding. The food was delicious, one of the best meals I have ever had. We had the Cumbria Tasting of Pork, Wow 👌 😀 The raspberry dessert was lovely, plus the service was really good.

Spur of the moment decision to have lunch and we were very happy would definitely go again. I had the lamb kofta and they were very tasty. Fabulous chips too

Really cosy pub with a great menu

A real gem of a place. Went here with the brother on the way past to get a break from the traffic queues. Had the burger, best ever, place was packed, turning people away so recommend you book. We were lucky to get a table, the lady who greeted us at the door was great and squeezed us in. Service was top notch, food came in a good time despite being very busy. Highly recommend, brother paid and the tight git didnt leave a tip, will get them sorted next time we pass.

The restaurant was okay, look good but the waiters to way to long to get or make any of our food. There were about 10 other people there and it took them about 20 minutes for them to get us some water and we waited about 40 minutes to get our food. the food was also not that good and the deserts are the only thing to write home about because they were above average. So go there is your patience, really patience, and don't need to eat or like below-par foods, eat here.

A quick meal out on a whim for the family and we were not disappointed. We will certainly be returning for more meals out.

Food is exceptional the fillet steak in particular is mouth watering thoroughly enjoyed my whole meal one of favourite places to eat.

Simply the best pub food for miles around. Service is always good, food is really tasty & well presented. What more could anyone want?! Best to book ahead, as walk ins may not always be lucky enough to grab a table.

What a wonderful little pub, food was lovely and a good portion size. Staff were welcoming and attentive without being overpowering (a rare skill in my experience). No obvious disabled parking bays and car park surface uneven which caused a small issue for one of our elderly party members.

We took a very worthy detour from the M6 to visit this establishment. This is a charming pub with wonderful design features that create a comfortable and original feeling atmosphere. Very dog friendly a great selection of drinks on the bar but we were on the fruity cider as the weather was blazing. I was really torn between 3 different dishes that I knew would be amazing including one on the excellent specials board. I went for the lamb pie with fondant potato and the minty gravy in particular made this spectacular dish stand out. However it was the prompt and attentive service at this pub which stood out the most to me. Johnathan in particular with his keen observation and great customer service skills always seemed to appear just when we wanted him to, he impressed us in this manner on no less than 4 separate occasions during our meal. I can't wait to return and try something else from the menu, we were even saying how we would love to live near this pub.

Sunday lunch not worth it at all boil in the bag roast beef and gravy frozen potatoes not worth a pound never mind what they charge won't ever go back

Family meal at a pub I last went to about 30 years ago. Clean tidy with excellent service, my meal the burger was delicious my wife’s pork was excellent and my daughter had macaroni cheese tasty, I will definitely go again without waiting as long!

Top quality food exellent staff

We had a family meal here last night. There was 4 of us and we all had 3 courses. The food was amazing, cooked to perfection and large portions. Best lamb I have ever tasted! Great customer service from all the staff too and served quickly even though the pub was fairly busy. No waiting around for the next course but enough time in between. Highly recommend X

Really lovely food, service and atmosphere with a roaring fire on the go. Very friendly staff and very attentive service. Quality of the food was excellent with all locally sourced ingredients. We were staying in the area for Easter and wanted a nice meal out before we leave. Definitely recommend.

The food was gorgeous! I was really impressed with this restaurant, everything was locally sourced and the quality of food was great here! Server's were attentive, and the young man who served us was funny, charming and helpful! I will definitely be back, my highlights were the raspberry sorbet, the pithivier and ALL of the tasting of pork dish, wonderful food, great attention to detail in food, decor and service and extremely filling!

Just celebrated my Mum’s 83rd birthday with an excellent Sunday lunch. I had mentioned when I booked it was Mum’s birthday & they had put lovely ‘happy birthday’ banner up on the wall at our table. The pub was very busy but the service was excellent. Great atmosphere, easy parking - would recommend to anyone.

The food was superb, all 4 of us really enjoyed our meal. Decent cask beers as well, and with a friendly staff this pub was a great find.

We booked for a Christmas night. It was excellent value for money. You had a great menu choice, and you got to have a dance as well. Definitely recommend booking to go here for any time of the year.

Not very children friendly and not a lot of information on there website versus when they open and start actually serving food

By far the best pub lunch I’ve ever had. Good job the chef owns it or he’d be head hunted. You can tell immediately by looking at the menu that it’s going to be worth the visit. The portions are large, the food is beyond expectations (better than fancy restaurant quality) it’s really not - that’ll do pub food. If you’re disappointed I’ll eat my hat or you think McDonalds is ok food

Lovely pub, great range of beers and excellent food. We had the Christmas menu and it had a good variety of choices alongside the traditional turkey. Highly recommend the Westmoreland ramekin starter of mushrooms and bacon cooked in cream and garlic.

Great night. Only the one visit so far but seems to have managed to keep the atmosphere and friendliness of a local, but with great food and space for groups

Have been here before and food was excellent. Sadly not so this time (Saturday). My host could not eat what he was given. He could barely get a knife through it(the light lunch of ciabatta ad sausage). Perhaps new knives are needed as they are quite blunt.) The French onion soup was overpowering with something we cannot work out making it unpalatable. We did complain at the time and they were very good any it. It won't put us off coming back as have eaten very well there before. Hopefully it was just a blip. One thing... The portions are way too big!

Excellent food. The steak was delicious and well worth the money. They managed to squeeze me in as I didn't have a booking. Also, they let my dog join us.

First time visit with friends, lovely pub with excellent food. Only slight criticism was we had pre-booked our table but when we arrived there were still other diners sat at it. Rather than giving us another table, which were all empty but reserved, we were told to stand at the bar until our original table was ready. I'm sure the staff could've re-jigged the seating arrangements to allow us to sit at a table upon arrival but it seemed a bit 'too difficult to do'. But that was the only slight negative really on what was a lovely meal and we would deffo return. Recommended.

What can I say but this place ticks all our boxes , we love it even though its out of our way it's worth the journey.
