Your address is miss-guiding. You are not in Castle Douglas, but 15 Miles away in New Galloway! A drive after dinner!

Lovely staff - so friendly, welcoming and helpful with a lovely resident dog as a bonus. I had both evening meal and breakfast there - the food was good quality, tasty and a good portion size. I particularly enjoyed the home made lasagne. The place itself is cosy and oldy worldy style which added to the charm and character. The room was a good size, very clean and comfy. Parking on the Main Street close to the hotel was easy and the hotel is in a great location with lots of beauty spots within easy reach.

Disappointing this time. The food was quite poor. Usually book for afternoon tea which is always lovely. Decided to try the lunch menu which I doubt we will do again. The table ordered 4 Parmesans. One arrived late and the others varied greatly. Mine had clearly been under the grill and the cheese was almost burnt. The bechamel sauce was no existent. The service was also poor and we waited some time for drinks order, despite the fact we could see the drinks waiting on the end of the bar. Cocktails were ordered which tasted nice however the some of the glasses were only half full. All in all we may dine elsewhere in the future. The keys will lose out on our large booking!

Not a fair time to judge as kitchens were being re-furbished. However, service was fine and food adequate albeit with a restricted menu. Good evening overall.

As a regular sewing group we like to try different restaurants for Christmas and a mid year lunch outing. One member had recently tried The Keys and recommended it so we booked up. Booking online was quick and easy, a pleasant girl took our food order over the phone, and there was an e.mail to confirm our booking the day before. On arrival the staff were friendly, the food was hot and delicious, and we would recommend The Keys to anyone.

after reading the reviews i thought this sounds nice, but we were met with a ill mannered lady who said children not allowed in a witch type voice, we don't have a license for children after 19.00, i know we were in scotland but come on, anyway there loss as we went to Kenbridge hotel which was amazing and our bill was £103.00 as there was 5 of us so a big loss for a small country pub will not be visiting cross keys again

No one to greet us upon arrival; Had to queue at a busy bar in order to get seated at our table. There was no order as to who was served; Once we were seated, we were told that all but one of the menu items had sold out; Once we placed our order, we we later told that our options for the starter had sold out; The waitress wasn't interested in keeping our drinks refreshed; The milk served to my wife was off, and curdled when poured into the hot tea; My wife was served a ceasar salad which didn't contain any croutons or anchovies. This had to be thrown away and remade; My roast pork was served with cold Yorkshire puddings; I had to remind the waitress to bring the vegetables that should have accompanied my lunch; No apology or acknowledgement of the poor service when we left;

Really enjoyed our meal Saturday night, which included introducing the visitors in our group (who had come from far and wide) to the local speciality: The Parmo! Everyone in our 12-strong group enjoyed their main courses but we were a tad disappointed with the desserts. The selection of ice creams and sorbets with homemade biscuit came sans biscuit and sadly the ice cream on offer is no longer Beckleberry's (The Keys used to offer their Bubblegum flavour as one of the many ice cream flavours for selection among more flavours than just vanilla, strawberry and chocolate) and the chocolate ice cream on the plate had melted by the time it arrived to the table - bit of a let down compared to the menu description. The Eton Mess was particularly disappointing, as it was a deconstructed Eton Mess when the whole enjoyment of an Eton Mess is that it all comes mixed together in layers in a tall glass. There wasn't a lot on the plate to justify the price tag for that dish. The pana cottas though were very tasty! We used to love the desserts at The Keys as they were the perfect way to round off a delicious meal - here's hoping they're restored to their former glory next time we dine in. :D

Opinion round the table was that the choice of food, from several menus, was plentiful and varied.

Food was well prepared and service prompt - Our Tea-Time group were very pleased with The Keys and we would certainly consider this venue again when next we visit Yarm.

If I was giving this review solely on the food I would give it 10/10. You could tell the food was freshly baked and a lot of effort went into the presentation. The scones came out warm and there was just the right amount of food to fill you up nicely. I booked a table for 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon for my friends birthday there were 4 of us. We did arrive late by approx 15 mins due to traffic. We noticed a table which said reserved so we assumed it was ours, my friend went to the bar area to check it was ours while me and my friends sat down. We waited around 10 mins to be asked what drink we would like at which point we ordered a pot of tea and a glass of water each. Following this our afternoon tea arrived around 4.15 (a full hour after sitting down). The place was full of people, it seemed it was too busy for how many staff were working. The staff themselves were nice and were apologetic for the wait. When our afternoon tea arrived we asked for another pot of tea as we had drank the first lot well before the food arrived. This finally came as we were nearly finished. We also waited ages for our bill too. I wouldn't say this has completely put me off as luckily the food was tremendous, I will definitely try it again and hopefully the service was just a one off bad experience.

If you're looking for a no nonsense Sunday lunch along traditional lines this is a good place to choose. Easy access and good service plus generous portion sizes. If anything over generous. Limited dessert menu and on the day we visited two of those were not available. You may not need to book most Sundays especially in the summer when outside seating offers a nice al fresco feel to any meal.

I went for Sunday lunch (and had exactly the same food) a few weeks ago. It was brilliant. Therefore I raved about it to my husband, and we went ourselves. The lamb Roast was previously delicious. Although the menu States that it would be served 'pink' I was served RAW lamb which was totally inedible because of the stringy sinue running throughout all the meat. I'd also raved about the puddings to my husband (he loves sticky toffee pudding)... We placed our order for puddings, waited about 40 mins, and we're then told they'd run out. During all of this, our meal was utterly spoiled by the herd of horrors having a kids birthday party upstairs. The banging was SO LOUD and continued ft the entire duration of our meal. The staff however are very nice. But I won't be going back.

We booked after seeing the afternoon tea for kids on facebook coming out in an ice cream truck stand. Ours didn't though we had a small picnic table there were two sandwiches each for the children a cupcake a fruit kebab a small candy floss ball and a few sweets. The adults consisted of four sandwiches each which really only equated to two slices of bread two scones each one friut and one cheese. The cake board had a chocolate brownie, a lemon mouse (which wasn't full we hadn't notices but our server had so took it back to the kitchen to be remade) a caramel woopie pie and a Victoria sponge all each. Along with a drink each. For all I know this was afternoon tea so was to be light nibbles and cake I feel that the sandwiches were a let down and could have had more there didn't look a lot to the children's and we were disappointed that it didn't come out as advertised. I wouldn't recomeny this again for a family. Maybe for a girlie afternoon catch up

I understand that 'The Cross Keys Hotel' is under new management. Perhaps consideration should be given to that fact when reading my comments. My husband and I dropped in for a drink and a bite of lunch. Beer - no problems. Whisky and Dry Ginger Ale - No dry ginger ale. How about a Bloody Mary - No Tomato Juice. No apologies, no explanation, just don't have any! Went on to order lunch.... Ham and Cheese toasted sandwich please - No HAM! We were a long way from anywhere so I ordered a cheese sandwich - I received 2 pieces of stale, barely buttered bread, with a handful of generic grated cheese... Not really good enough.

Our party of 6 adults and one baby visited the Cross Keys in New Galloway on 29th August for an evening meal, based on the positive reviews found on this website. The staff were friendly and helpful in helping to get baby, in his pram, into the restaurant. The order for drinks and food was taken at the table but a couple of people had to settle for second best when told they had run out of a few things on the menu. When the food arrived it turned out to be fairly average pub fare. Nothing stood out as different or exciting. And it was priced a little high for such ordinary food. Not a bad experience but we all wished we had tried elsewhere.

After staying at the Cally Palace for a few days I moved here simply because I was always eating here. Rooms were modern, clean and just not at all what I expected at all, but in a good way. My room faced the main street, but there is so little traffic that I often wondered where all the people were. So peaceful was it that I had my bedroom window open all the time. Breakfast was top quality and plentiful, evening meals were just as good, nice fresh food always available. I will certainly stay here again.

Recently changed owners who have spent a fortune upgrading the property both inside and outside. The menu has been upgraded too and both the food and service are first class. The Sunday carvery is magnificent. The staff are exceedingly pleasant and nothing is too much trouble to them. There is now live music weekly by local musicians and everyone is welcome. All this and dog friendly too. A Moffat Gem.

This bistro has lots of vegetarian/vegan options, and a lovely beer garden with tables, so if it's shining, you can sit in the sun with a lovely meal. It also has free parking, if limited places. Would recommend booking as it gets very busy, but well worth it.

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.
