The Cross Keys in Newark and Sherwood

I visited this Very lovely country pub with my partner and daughter and upon arrival was welcomed by a very lovely lady who couldn't do any more to help us and was very polite. I ordered the steak and ale pie,chips,peas,carrots and gravy which was absolutely lovely the price was 12.50p and the pie was homemade.my partner ordered the chicken burger which she absolutely loved and had 7 mini fillets on with homemade batter it also came with homemade onion rings,chips,salad and coleslaw all for 12.50p. My daughter ordered chicken nuggets which was homemade chicken chuncks and chips an peas for 7.50p and she loved it.To top it off my daughter knocked over 2 full cokes everywhere and instead of attitude or dirty looks the lady was amazing and so understanding.id recommended this pub to anybody and everybody who loves a well priced meal and amazing food also they have a good selection of homemade puddings and a log fire in the middle just to give it that extra country pub feel.

We visited on a quiet Tuesday evening. The lady who served us was very warm, friendly and helpful. The food was delicious (I had sausage and mash) and very reasonably priced. Very varied menu choices with lots of specials and very dog friendly too.

We were staying nearby, overnight, for work. We had dinner at The Cross Keys. The meals were very good, the staff very friendly & the atmosphere, welcoming. We would definitely recommend.

Lovely friendly pub 10 min drive from Newark, with great service and an unexpectedly good range of menu choices. As well as standard pub meals, they have a range of daily home made specials. Moussaka with side salad was beautifully presented and delicious as was Steak & Ale pie. Other tables had Spinach & Ricotta Canelloni which also looked v tasty For smaller appetites smaller portions are available too. They also accommodated our non alcoholic cocktail requests with ease and various niche coffee requests too! Welcomes dogs inside and out. Plenty of parking.

Appalling food I would avoid eating here It’s not difficult to serve poor fish and chips but they absolutely managed it We last visited this pub about 4 years ago so after reading the reviews we decided to try it again (it was very poor last time and nothing has changed) The reviews on here do not reflect the food served to us We will never return whilst under the current ownership

Great bar and very friendly staff and locals and always willing to help. Great menu and great selection of drinks available and great prices and well worth a visit.

Went at a lunchtime with a walking group to this good old fashioned unspoilt pub. The staff were really nice and friendly answering all queries in the lead up to the walk promptly. Opened the gates and toilets for us before our walk. Great food, large portions. Good real ales too. We will definitely go back.

Great value Sunday lunch that is well cooked with loads of trimmings. The real ales make it a good choice for a nice afternoon with cheerful table service.

Just had a lovely lunch at the Cross keys , very friendly staff, can recommend the Chicken Stew in a large Yorkshire pudding with dumplings, very hearty!!

Well what a find...coming back from newark thought we would have a trip to southwell for a bite to eat stopped here on the way and we are not disappointed. Lovey landlord and landlady great atmosphere log fires burning. Great food..you really get your moneys worth here a right plate full and it wasn't exspensive..will definitely be coming more often .

Lovely Fish and Chips at the Cross Keys today. The wife ordered chicken goujons. When they came she asked if they were fish! What a silly sausage! I reassured her that they were chicken and that was that. I did order fish goujons by mistake, but after 28 years of marriage I think it’s important to hold the line.

Pre-Meatloaf tribute gig at Southwell. Travelling, so thought a place just outside the town would be a good idea. Booked table for three at 18.00 and the pub was quiet (booking is advisable as the pub isn’t huge and is popular). Friendly staff, real fire in one of the seated non-food areas. Fireplace where we sat with lovely smoky-smell evidence of a recent fire. Ordered fish and chips x2 and a steak. Fish - lovely flavour, batter light and crispy, not claggy underneath. Choice of mushy of garden peas. Chips - not chips, they were rustic fries (skin on) would have preferred chunky chips with this traditional ‘chippy tea’. Apparently the steak was ‘perfect’. Definitely recommend if you’re out this way.

Friendly barmaid, but the menu is now comprised of pub food from yesteryear - which is a shame given the interesting choices which they used to have. Funnily enough, it was empty when we were there on Saturday lunchtime.

Very nice food and friendly service. Basket meals for £5 are excellent. Well worth calling in. Outdoor seating and traditional indoor area. Will always go back here.

We were just passing by and saw a sign for food. We stopped and were served with lovely beer, a burger and scampi bites by helpful friendly people. Like everyone they are just finding their feet opening up again and we look forward to returning next time we are on this road.

Good food nice place to eat for a small country pub. Landlord and landlady friendly and helpful, always plenty of food on your plate. Have eaten there quite a few times and always enjoyed the food and drinks no complaints about it at all 5 out of 5 for me.

Went on Saturday night. Browsed the menu, which was on a wipe clean laminated page of A4 paper (not very classy if you ask me, but maybe that's just me!) and started to order. The waitress didn't have a clue about the menu or drinks on offer though. Ordered surf & turf but the steak was the toughest I've ever been served! I realise it's a rump, so I wasn't expecting smooth fillet, but it was practically inedible. We had to send my father in law's steak back - it was ordered "very well done" but it was far from it. The waitress started debating with my father in law about whether his steak was medium rare, or just medium. Seriously? Medium rare or medium is irrelevant, it wasn't very well done, was it, and that's the point. Perhaps a "I'm so sorry sir, let me fix that for you" would go down a lot better. Anyway, all in all, disappointing.

This was the worst food ever had in a pub we had fried haddock and so called chips and mushy peas and the chips were black they told us that they are double fried these looked and tasted like they were double incinerated they did ask if we wanted another bowl of chips which were very greasy and didn’t enjoy them on leaving he asked us about the chips in the bowl and said they weren’t much better said I would leave this review and wouldn’t be going back would not recommend to anyone

Saw a sign just outside the workhouse, popped in on the way home. great menu, great prices. Loved the two for a tenner, best meals we've had in ages, service was excellent, will return again soon.

I have had a lot of Sunday roasts out in my time, I can say with some experience that The Cross Keys does the best roast that I'm aware of. I highly recommend paying the £2 surcharge for Rib of Beef. I also tried their Salmon and Hollandaise sauce that was on their Specials board, again absolutely top notch. The vegetables are really flavour some with Broccoli and Cauliflower in a Cheese sauce being my favourite.

Nice place and friendly staff. However it's not child friendly. We went for a Sunday meal. Most of the meal was fine but the roast potatoes were burnt and greasy and my wifes chicken was not that nice. Expensive for what it was. However my 11 year old says the lasagna was delicious!

Lovely cosy traditional pub - had fab meal - real log fire and candles made it really homely. Good atmosphere and prompt service.

Had a superb Sunday dinner at the cross keys today. Thank you to Steve & alison for making us and our family feel very welcome on this special day. Food and service were top class and I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone to this wonderful place. We will be coming back soon for Wednesday steak night.

A quick drink after our weekly shop in Newark. My brothers local! Very friendly and excellent homebrewed real ales in excellent condition. Didn't eat but menu looked varied but a bit pricey in my opinion!

Had perry for a change. It was good but its ABV of 7.5% meant that I could accomodate only a pint and a half.
