The lady that served us (Beth) was very professional, she asked us if we would like additional food, but did not try to force anything on us that we didn’t want, she seemed to be generally caring, talking to us not just treating us like the next customer. It was a pleasure to be served by her.

Joined for a friend's birthday. Massive beer garden, great atmosphere, really friendly staff who will actually look at you and serve you quickly. Definitely one of the best pubs in East London. The food is a little pricey but that's London and the quality was high. All round fantastic pub.

An absolutely fantastic pub! Never seen a beer garden quite like it, incredible. The service and staff were also top notch, as well as the drinks and vibes of course. I was lucky to be served by a lovely person called Henny (hope I'm spelling that right) she was a lovely addition to what I could already tell was going to be a great pub visit. Will definitely be back to try out some more of their beer selection and to try out different spots in their amazing garden. Cheers

Our first time here despite living in Clapton for 5 years!! Lovely pints (and my wife's fave Rose) great food - we had amazing pizzas. The staff are all so friendly, makes all the difference in a local boozer. Outdoor area is MASSIVE and they had screens up for the match which was great fun. Will be a great summer spot once this wretched winter ends!

When the independently owned pub was bought by Youngs, I was initially cynical about how it would change. Would they try and change it into the Princess of Wales type of pub? Only a stones throw down the road. Fortunately my cynicism was not justified, all I’ve seen is improvement since the acquisition. It’s cleaner, has been given a long over needed sympathetic restoration. Part of the charm of the billet (or bullet if you’ve lived in the area long enough and know its former guise) is its rough and ready and that’s part of its charm. Drinks wise… it’s a London pub! So hard to comment on the prices. But they are reasonable considering the size of the pub. Food. Hmmm, being totally honest even though I’ve drank here for 12+ years I rarely eat here. I love my Sunday roasts, and choose to eat elsewhere for my religious roast. Which is such a shame, however they are currently recruiting a new head chef (the current sous chef has probably cooked the best sunday roast when the head chef was absent) so there is an opportunity to make this into a go to destination for a beloved roast. But in honesty it’s not quite there yet. Most of my friends choose to go to the princess of wales for the nearest roast, but that can change over time, especially with a new head chef. Staff… this is what makes or breaks a pub. The staff are super, super friendly and amicable . At times some can be a little inattentive, but that’s not a deal breaker, it’s part of the Billets charm. It is what you get. The beer garden. By far the unique selling point of this pub. Formerly a huge tarmac car park, it has been transformed into one of east London’s best outdoor pub spaces. Don’t believe me? visit it on a sunny afternoon. But good luck trying to get in when it’s the World Cup. When the summer finally arrives you won’t find a better pub to spend it in. Room for improvement? Yes. Nail your Sunday roasts and it’s bang on!

We went there for a family Christmas meal and I have to say it was the worst Christmas dinner I have ever had and could never recommend it to anyone. The table was still sticky with drinks from the night before, the glasses dirty, still had lipstick on them The meat was like cardboard, with so little flavour that no-one could tell whether it was turkey or pork. The vegetables were over cooked, and mushy, the whole construction floating in an indistinguishable. miserable and watery gravy. I will never eat there again and certainly not recommend it to anyone.

Muireach and his team were excellent hosts for our Aussie rules football club's (the London Swans) annual awards afternoon in the summer. The beer garden was a great size, the beers cold, the spirits well poured, and the food delicious. I've been a regular customer for many years, mainly for a quick early evening drink, not food. Yesterday I was told for the first time - rather rudely by a guy behind the bar - that he wouldn't take cash for £1.80, only a card. When I said I didn't want to use a card, he took the drink back. I shan't be going in again. It's a pity because it's otherwise a good pub with a pleasant manager. And it is/was my local.

It’s such a shame that your experience is completely dependent on who is working. Felt very unwelcome, no greeting, no check back, no help, no recommendations, no smile, barely even registered o was there. The food is expensive for what it is… so I at least expect a smile. Just the previous week I received an acknowledging smile when I walked it, asked if I’d like something to eat and then given a menu, drinks and cutlery brought to my table, suggestions for food made when I was undecided, when food delivered I was asked if I had everything I needed, check back done and including additional drinks, desserts offered, and a goodbye when I left. And all this with a cheery member of staff. Like I said it’s roulette with this place. I’d rather be treated every visit modestly. Rather than treated like a king one week and scum the next.

A well maintained pub with a large outside area. A good selection of beers and an interesting selection of music. The food was pricey: £7 for a small plate of mackerel and salad and £14 for a mains. The trouble with table service is that you lose track or how much you've spent. You get the bill and say 'HOW MUCH!'

Great large outside area, partly heated. Staff friendly but service not great. Thought the idea of a budget dish was great £6. If you cannot afford the £17 roast nor the £13 sausage&mash, choose bread with butter for £3 (but order extra butter as what comes with it hardly covers half of it). You deserve better than this, what they call Chili von carne.

This place scrapes three stars, mainly on the strength of a great range of ales available, mostly from smaller London breweries. Located next to Clapton railway station, it's easy to get to and there is a substantial outdoor drinking area, with a decked section to the rear leading round to gardens at the side. So far so good, but it's downhill thereafter. The food was disappointing. I ordered a crispy pork dish shown on the specials board, but there is also a crispy pork dish on the main menu and I think I got the wrong one but as I wasn't sure and couldn't be bothered to argue with the less-than-attentive staff here, I accepted what was given. They just plonk the food on your table and leave you to find your own cutlery and condiments. The pork was quite nice but a very small portion for £12.95, served burger style in a bun with a rather odd mix of other ingredients; not what I was expecting. Annoyingly it was served on a wooden board, which regular readers of my reviews will know it is a pet annoyance for me. The recorded music here is somewhat loud for a lunchtime. There are some things to like about this place but would I make a special point of coming here again? Probably not.

My buddy and I went to the crooked billet to meet his cousin. if you're taking a car it's easy to get to, but with public transportation you will have to walk awhile. The crooked billet is situated right next to another pub called two hands. This place has decent local beers, wine, cocktails and a full lunch dinner menus available.Supposedly this place is known as having above average pub food. I don't know why! The menu seems really appetizing and promising. I wasn't sure what to get so I ordered a sampler platter or at least I believe that's what it was. It seemed agreeable to me because it had sausage roll, scotch eggs, some ham, cheese, bread and maybe a couple of other accoutrements. I couldn't believe how disappointing it was. The sausage roll and the scotch egg called I couldn't believe it I was so disappointed how could it be served cold. I doubt I would ever eat there again. That's why I'm only giving it 3 stars. The drinks are good the atmosphere was good, they even outdoor lounge chairs to enjoy a sunny day, but the food was so subpar. It was just a crooked deal.

Have to say that the food was a mixed bag, had the hake dish which, for £15 on a midweek evening, was terribly small, more like a starter. Now the older I become I will admit the more cynical I get. When the bill arrived it had an erroneous extra pint on it at £4.10. I pointed this out to another member of staff, who returned with the correct bill. Saying with a frown, 'this was already printed out less the erroneous extra pint?'Now when I had a drink at lunchtime the pint cost £3.60. In the evening I had the same pint and was asked for £3.70? Handing over £4 I got 70p in change? Making it £3.30? On the bill the other pint I had was marked at £3.60 which was what I'd paid lunchtime. As I said I am getting more cynical and this may have been overwhelmed staff issues.Make of the above what you will, but check your bill!Errors aside it has to be said the beer, food and staff were all very good and I would strongly recommend a visit.

When my meal arrived, I wondered at first if I had ordered the wrong thing because all I could see was a giant Yorkshire pudding. But there, underneath the large, fluffy creation, was the roast beef (£13.75) that I sought. The pinkish meat (just how I requested it) was tasty enough - although there could have been just a bit more of it - and was accompanied by four crispy roast potatoes (satisfactory, although if I was going to be critical, perhaps a little too much fat was used for cooking. What got me really excited though was the accompanying vegetables. Red cabbage is fast becoming standard fare with London roasts, but creamed swede (absolutely delicious) is not. And the green cabbage was oozing with flavour and so delightful that I saved some for my last mouthful. While I've had some good roasts in London recently, they are often let down by the quality / quantity of the gravy. There was enough of it today, it just didn't really taste of very much. I'm craving some thick, flavoursome gravy. My search continues....But overall, this was a great Sunday roast and the Crooked Billet is definitely worth checking out. The fact there was virtually a clean plate (I just left a bit of the enormous Yorkshire) at the end, says it all. And don't be put off by the exterior of this pub - it may not look that exciting from the outside, but inside you'll find friendly staff, with fantastic ales (four hand pumps when I visited). On one side of the bar, the tables were laid out restaurant-style, but in the other area there were plenty of available unreserved spots for people both wanting to eat or just half a chilled out Sunday lunchtime pint.

4 poeple at our table. 2 of us got served first. The other 2 persons 20 minutes later. No Yorkshire pudding although it was listed on the menu... but no one told us that the kitchen run out of it. The quality of the food was pretty poor and we were not the only table complaining about the food. Thanx God the 2 boyz that deal with us were great and we had a full refund. L

This is the definition of your great local pub. The staff are all welcoming, friendly and happy to pour you a pint and make suggestions about what to drink if you are unsure. The food is excellent and served hot and in good time. We ate and drank at the pub several times as it was close to where we were visiting. They have a large semi enclosed garden area with several picnic tables, an open area with a ping pong table and another open garden area with lounge chairs. They also have a large flat screen television mounted on the exterior of the bar so you can watch all the football matches while sipping a pint and having a steak, a burger, fish and chips or a wonderful great salad to name a few of the food items. This is well worth a trip to enjoy the great food and pub atmosphere. Cheers!!

Arrived at 130pm for Sunday roast. Left at 330pm as we hadn't received any food. Excuses were "the chef didn't turn up", "we had a ploblem with the gas".... It's a roast, not Michelin dining.

the roast dinner was good, i was impressed by the temperature of the beef, it was perfectly rare, exactly how i asked for it...i wasn't too sure about the service as the waitress made a mistake with my drink and didn't offer a replacement, but she was sweet enough and it was exceptionally busy, the outside area is perfect for an English summer as it has a veranda for the inevitable rain that may be experienced during this intrepid season!

Oh dear.. Used to be one of the best burgers and veggie burgers in town but now seem to be serving up a terrible imitation. Halloumi burger was two thin deep fried slices of cheese on a ocean of coleslaw slapped into a soggy bun. Cheeseburger lacked all the care, quality and love of old. Shame. Used to be a good bet. Very disappointed to see standards drop so dramatically. Sad to see another pub revert to serving up mass dross. Hope it changes back for the good.

This place is in the middle of the country, Stoke Row, and so well worth the drive to it. The food was beautiful, fresh and so well presented. The ingredients associated with each dish are clever and fascinating. The wine list is extensive and most interesting, obviously collated by someone who knows and appreciates good wines. We had a large family gathering here and the service was impeccable.

I live very close to this place so go all the time, mainly out of ease. Their outdoor seating area is fantastic. Over the past year, the food has got a lot better than when it was first re-vamped. The starters are always particularly tasty. I really don't think the service is that great at all though, it can be very slow at the bar and the staff at times can be almost rude. I think they need to improve on their drink selection too. It has bad choice of white wines and their prosecco is frizzante so always tastes like it was opened the night before. The list could do with a New Zealand Sauvingnon Blanc! Please improve on these things CB and you'll have a much more satisfied customer!

This is a great little pub, good beer, food and great outside space. Really nice atmosphere, but service is terrible. For the number of staff I have never seen such inefficiency. Other than the blonde barmaid who was clearly the only competent person, the rest seemed to move at half speed with no system being used resulting in very slow service. All the other customers were commenting on the poor service. Such a pity given this place has real potential.

Last year I was used to visit this pub during summer time for the very nice garden area. I have recently came back for dinner, but we ended up in a bit of a disappointment: food was very tasteless, burgers were overcoocked and with wrong/missing ingridients. Then we have received a Fish and chips instead of our starters... and magic moment: the waiter cleaning his nose with his hands after serving us food. Mh Mh! Not so elegant!

The Crooked Billet is a revamped boozer that has been given a bit of a hipster makeover. It has a wide variety of craft beers on tap and a ping pong table in its large beer garden. On a Saturday afternoon there was a mix of clientele crossing generations and class. The food is standard, but well done gastropub fare. I had the sausage and mash and it was generous and delicious portion.

Visited here many times and never been disappointed. Very large garden, which is great in the Summer. Visited her on Sunday for lunch, it was packed and we managed to secure the last indoor table. Great staff, very friendly and really on the ball. I had the asparagus, nut roast, apple crumble and my husband had the squid and pork. All delicious and really tasty. Absolutely recommend this pub.

The title says it all, food is overpriced and not very tasty, and the staff can be very rude. I have visited the Crooked Billet several times since the refurbishment and each time have left feeling rather bleh about the place. Today after booking a table, we arrived to be told that we could not be accommodated and we were advised to go elsewhere. No apology or any attempt rectify the misbooking, just rudely ushered out of the pub. We will not be returning.

This place is always good fun, the Sunday food is very good and theres lots if it. A little on the expensive side, especially for locals but they attract more of a 'yummy mummy' kind of crowd. They never have enough staff for the amount of customers and this leads to a lot of waiting around and trying in vain to get someones attention. If you are a little more proactive then they seem to take notice. A bit too stressful for us, its not the place for a laid back meal. The garden is very nice and fun in the summer. Will be interesting to see how they cope once its winter and the space for seating is halved.

Love it here. Where else can you get a whole bloody roast chicken delivered to your table. Great beer garden, friendly enough staff and nice huts to move into with patio heaters for when it gets a bit chilly. Only one toilet for the blokes though which isnt the best when two East End hipsters emerge from it looking "perky" on a Sunday afternoon. REALLY?That being said it still a great little find and it's nice to see some great boozers sprouting up around Clapton.

I recently went to have a drink in this pub on a busy Saturday. The atmosphere was great and I have to say the pub is superb. After waiting 10 min at the bar waiting to be served (fair enough on a busy Saturday night) I simply asked the bartender "can I order with you?" The guy said no in a very rude way and walked away. A few minutes later I asked him again to be served and HE GAVE ME THE FINGER !!!I have never seen such a behaviour from a member of staff, this was shocking. It turns out the bartender was the bar manager which tells a lot about the vibe of the place. I am not at all familiar with leaving negative comments but I think this is simply unacceptable. It's a shame because this place looks great and has a huge potential. Overall it was an extremely bad experience. Won't go again and won't recommend it.

We love it here. You can have a quiet pint or get amongst it at the weekend. They have a burger bar outside, as well as games like ping pong which is great in the summer and the fairy lights outside create a lovely atmosphere. I always get the haloumi burger and my boyfriend loves the pulled pork. They have a few decent ales too.

This place has undergone a big change. An outside seating and dining area replaces what was an empty car park so these guys have great ideas. Table tennis table and great outside informal area but food is pricey as is the wine. First time I've ever experienced sausage sold by the inch........oo-err missus!!Worth a visit to give support for their efforts and hope they eventually pull it off.

Discovered this little gem whilst on a trip to London. Light and airy with a contemporary decor and friendly atmosphere. Excellent menu - perfect for lunch - the food is all freshly prepared and cooked to a very high standard. Very reasonable prices too! They also cater for functions so would be ideal for this. I'll be back next time I'm in London to try sample more from the menu. Decent wine for me and good range of beers for my husband.

Clearly understaffed, although there were only about 6 people in the restaurant, still managed to take 30 mins just to produce 2 cokes… waited 45 mins for food before giving up.

Came to your restaurant on for a Sunday roast. I ordered chicken and got it raw and bleeding... After getting it taken back due to the state it was in, I waited over 25mins got a new one. I then got a tiny section of just the breast, 2 potatoes a tiny amount of carots, no gravey but weird mustard mesh. I cannot believe that this tiny portion of whatever was clearly left in the kitchen, cost me £35. No offer of a discount for the raw food or the huge wait or for the insanely small plate I got in comparison to my friends. The waitress didn't come and check on us, and I had to keep grabbing someone's attention to get drinks ordered. I am incredibly disappointed by this service and the awful experience I received considering the cost I had to pay for my food! Gutted and wouldn't recommend!

We used the restaurant for the first time on recommendation that food was excellent but £22 for cod and chip and 2 soft drinks was over priced.a can of coke £2.50 the food was so shocking that for somewhere that cook to to order the chips were cold and the fish was soggy best thing the coke was cold as described Service was terrible the was a lady behind the till that sounded like a banshee English not her first language but the food was the pits I cam next door to another burger takeout and had better service and hotter food Save your cash and the disappointment maybe better as a take out but I won’t give them another chance and for a chef of 15 years that is a proper insult
