I am so glad I didn't read the less positive reviews before I went. Sad for you that you had a negative experience as ours was FANTASTIC. Everything was so fresh, with one member of our party being offered a wonderful array of glutenfree produce. We weren't rushed and best of all this month th hotel are donating £5 from our afternoon teas to Butterwick Hospice. Loved the design of the hotel too, it felt like a very special place to be.

I never write reviews, always like to give places the benefit of the doubt. Not this time. Also looking at previous reviews, am I right in thinking croft hotel don't respond? Booked afternoon tea as a gift for my mams 70th birthday. Took her two sisters along as a treat. Informed on arrival that wedding was on and tea rooms closed, so located at 2.15 in the restaurant. Served a cup of coffee, along with sandwiches and scones. When the "fancies" arrived they were in fact 4 pieces of frozen cheesecake, not what you expect for afternoon tea. It was then nearly 3.30 before we saw anyone again. Despite our efforts to attract someone's attention, they were busy with wedding. When eventually this very young chap arrived we requested to see the manager. He came back approx 20 mins later and still no manager had arrived. She finally saw us 10 minutes after this and was deeply upset that the hotel had not provided good service, which they pride themselves on, and that we had not enjoyed our birthday treat. We were asked to return to the hotel as VIP guests the following month, when there would be no wedding so no excuses for bad service. She would be there personally to see to it. called on the Monday to confirm our booking for the following Friday, it was there. On arrival at the hotel we were shocked to see a wedding was being held, we were told no wedding on. We were shown to the tea rooms by an extremely rude hotel receptionist, who informed us it was not her job to know if we were booked in. When we were eventually seated, behind a large wall out of view, it took some time before our order was taken. This was after being asked, are you sure it was booked? We received our tea and coffee and what can only be described as pickle sandwiches. Everything had pickle on. No choice, just pickle and ham. The cakes were terrible, never tasted macaroons so bad. The table and menus left on the table were filthy. Called for the manager. A very nice friendly chap appeared who asked us if we had booked. I told him to check his t room diary, to his surprise, VIP tea for 4 people in my name. He once again apologised and said have a drink on the house and we will ensure your service is improved. It didn't. My mother whose birthday treat it was, was so disappointed, we had travelled twice from Newcastle for this experience only to be let down again. I was going to write a review at the time but My mother put pen to paper the old fashioned way and said we will see what response we get. It was sent recorded delivery direct to the owners of the hotel. We received nothing. The letter was not even acknowledged. Thanks Croft Hotel for spoiling a 70th Birthday Treat, twice.

Been here twice now in the past year with family. Always welcoming and lovely decor. Good dietary choices as we are both veggies. Amazing choice of tea. Lot's of choices on the menu add well if you don't want afternoon tea. The afternoon tea is great value for money and definitely fills you up! Better than many others in the area and happy it's still open. If you're a cyclist you can pop I after a cycle for bacon sarnies!

Have meant to stop here on our many times of passing and unfortunately did so yesterday. At 2.15 pm we were greeted (!) by a surly waiter that informed us that they closed at 3pm. We looked at the menu and I was going to order the quiche but was told that it took 25 mins to cook. We nearly didn't order anything feeling so unwelcome but did order sandwiches at 2.25 pm and some fresh orange juice (out of a carton) The waiter spilt some of the juice on the table but did not clear it up until I asked for it to be cleared. He spit out the words madam and sir and was the most unpleasant person ever. Our food arrived at 2.50pm (sadly we became clock watchers ) and my hubby explained that we didn't now have time to eat it and we were reluctantly told we would have time to finish. The food was well presented but my bread was not very fresh but the rest fine. On leaving I asked how people could come for afternoon tea if they closed at three but I was told that one could ring beforehand. I had asked the waiter to stop calling me madam in that awful tone but he managed to do it five more times..He has a major attitude problem and did inform us that he used to manage a restaurant with a staff of ten under him - one can only imagine that now he is working on his own that no one will work with him. Someone has spent money on this place and it looks good, the food is okay but this member of staff must be costing the owner a fortune. Went to Auckland Castle a couple of days before which is the same price wise and it was fab - outstanding food, décor and most importantly great staff, my advise is to spent your money their and not here.

Worst attitude I have ever seen - upon entering the waiter looked moody and didn't want to even acknowledge us. We took a seat - there were 5 of us and waited to be served. When he came over we ordered our coffee, tea and sandwiches to a man tapping his pen on the pad who looked like he didn't want to be there - or us to be there for that matter. We asked if they did a flat white to be told curtly no because its the same as a latte! We then asked if the bread used for the sandwiches was soft sliced or crusty from an un-sliced loaf to be told it was just bread! The use of the words 'madam' and 'sir' were almost spat out each time they were used. After the seemingly huge effort of taking the order to the kitchen and eventually returning....well surprise surprise what a disappointment. The coffees were very average, the tea was good - loose leaf and served in a pot. Hot chocolate was nice. The 2 roast rib of beef sandwiches whilst presented nicely on a wooden board with a nice garnish of crisps and salad leaves were served on stale bread and were full of fat and hardly any meat. The couple on the table opposite were also saying how their sandwich was served on stale bread. We said quietly that the sandwiches were not good and they were snatched away and he stomped off to the kitchen. No apology nothing. When we left another person was at the till and said that the original waiter did not want to deal with it. He did come back and removed the 2 sandwiches from the bill and gave a further 10% discount. Still no apology. If he's the owner - sell up - if he is staff - get another job - if you are thinking of going there - don't.

We had been looking forward to this for a while, having driven past on many occasions. When considering the price of the price of the afternoon tea (£25) we had not expected it to match the standard of 'Bettys', but had thought it may make for a pleasant less formal treat all the same. Upon arrival we had to wait around to be shown to our reserved table, and later saw others looking rather lost by the door as they also waited to be seated. We waited for 10 minutes before drink orders were taken. We waited approximately 40 minutes before our sandwiches (afternoon tea) arrived, by which time we had drank our tea and were not supplied with a refill. The service was disappointing, we were dealt with by 4 different staff members as each seemed to vanish without being seen again. At Bettys, nothing is too much trouble, extra sandwiches are freely offered, and tea is replenished without having to ask (and tastes much nicer). The price difference was certainly worth it, and the whole experience felt all the more special. Whereas at Croft Tea Rooms I questioned whether or not if I would have prefered boiling my own kettle at home.

This lovely looking tea room was a massive disappointment. After walking in this lovely quiet rural village we thought we'd stop for cake and tea/coffee to keep us going. I knew we wouldn't be allowed into the premises, because of our dog, I didn't expect them to almost turn our custom away althougher. We were the only customers about, after the family before us were turned away! Do you not like children either?I asked for a seat, table or bench to be brought outside to accommodate us. We were told an outright no, by the very rude waiter! After I suggested he ask his manager for a chair, as they have chairs outside in the summer, so I didn't have to sit on the pavement step with my take away cup of tea, I was still refused. It was suggested I sit further away from the tea room, outside the hotel itself, which I duly did. On the wooden seat there, only to discover an ashtray full of finished cigarette ends, not cleaned away from which looked like days of cigarettes, disgusting! As I waited for my tea, many many other dog walkers passed, do you realise croft tea rooms how much business you are losing by refusing to accommodate us dog walkers! Even outside.your premises. The weather was cold, but sunny, so your precious chairs wouldn't have been damaged, you could even put one of your benches near the tea room, minus the cigarette ends!I felt like an undesirable. Never again will I come to your premises, until you address the cleanliness, and your desire to have customers. By the way no one else visited the tea rooms whilst we had our cups of tea in paper cups. Had it not been a long walk we wouldn't have stayed either!

Me, 'Scon........'Waiter tapping pen on pad and in Impatient tone 'fruit or cheese'Me 'Coff.........'Waiter, decaff, latte, americano'Me 'coffee with milk'waiter sighing heavily ' hot milk, cold, milk?????'This was just part of my experience.Sadly I will not be returning in a hurry.

we stopped on spec for a quick lunch. We ordered the soup of the day and a sandwich . The tomato and basil soup ,supposedly homemade ,was so thick and salty as to be uneatable. It bore no resemblance in taste to any tomato soup I gave ever had, more like tomato paste from a tube, and the egg mayonnaise with watercress sandwich was lacking the watercress and the bread was so stale as to be like cardboard. Not a good experience. The waitress was most apologetic and did reduce the bill. Not her fault as all.

Four friends went for afternoon tea at Croft Tea rooms today. Overall it was a very pleasant experience. We had pots of real tea and were given extra hot water. There was a selection of four different types of sandwiches in nice soft bread, mini fresh cream meringue, mini macaroon, mini lemon tart and a mini chocolate cake along with a small scone, pot of cream and jam. We then had pots of filter coffee which were provided at no extra cost. Although it wasn't very busy service was a little slow but we were in no rush so it didn't bother us at all. We would definitely return.

We have passed the Croft Tea Rooms many times, and today got round to stopping. What a disappointment. The service was poor - we waited a long time for our order to be taken, even though two members of staff were just behind the counter. The tea arrived. Good point - real leaf tea. Bad point, nowhere to put the tea strainers was provided. On delivering the food the waiter said he would go and get cutlery and napkins, and failed to return with them. After a considerable wait, I had to go and remind him. The egg and watercress sandwich had no watercress. The salad had no dressing, and there was none on the table ... also no salt and pepper. By this time the waiting staff had both vanished so we did without. The bread tasted good, but was very dry. We shall not be returning.

As we were passing through Croft we thought we'd stop at the tea rooms for coffee and cake, as we'd intended to do on many occasions. Sadly, we found the tea rooms very disappointing and ordinary at best. The coffee was luke warm and the cakes didn't taste as good as they looked. Be warned - there's a 10% service charge on top of your bill; unusual for tea rooms. We'll drive past in future!

Sadly thought this would be a nice day out for a visiting guest from Surrey. We'd prebooked afternoon tea not realising they wouldn't give us a choice on arriving as they concluded we wanted their basic afternoon menue. Not wanting to complain we settled for the two for £25. When the coffee artived it was cold once milked added. Sandwiches dry, obviously had been standing around a while. The waitress uninterested in the service she supplied. The cakes nice, thank god.. Wouldn't return even though I had booked for easter to take my mother. Must cancel! They need a lesson in etiquette, cut the crust off is a start.

Visited croft tea rooms on friday, never again!! Cant believe the change, what has happened?? I first visited in the summer and loved it, the food and homemade cakes were very enjoyable and i remember how attentive and pleasant the waitress was, however nowadays a different story. Arrived with friends and was greeted with a sigh from a dark haired woman, dont know why she was annoyed as the place was empty, wonder why???? Tea arrived 30 mins after ordering and the food was dreadful, stale, old and tasteless!! All the time we were there the waitress never asked if everything was ok and after the way the food was literally chucked at us i felt i could not complain, she spent the time typing on her mobile!! Scowling at us, never ever have i experienced such appalling service, no wonder the place is deserted!!! Awful.

We visited the tea room this afternoon with the intention of having a coffee and a cake but due to the very unwelcoming greeting and lack of friendliness/ politeness by the member of staff on duty we soon left. The member of staff did not smile once, told us to "just sit down" and as we approached the only table with 3 seats were told "You can't sit there, its reserved", an extra chair was flung towards another table with angst, we sat down but felt so unwelcome that we left without ordering. We instead visited a lovely tea room at a local garden center "Paddock Farm Nursery" and had a delicious lunch, its surprising what service with a smile can do!

We called for afternoon tea on a Sunday. There was a 40min wait, but we were informed of this by our waitress. The tea itself was lovely with delightful scones and cakes. One of the best overall afternoon teas I have had, complemented greatly by the very helpful staff. It was lovely to be served by ' ladies ' who cared about their customers rather than ' surly ' younger staff who just want to finish their shift ! At £15 ish inc service charge it settled nicely in between high end hotel prices and cafe prices. Well worth a visit

After looking at the menu for the aternoon tea we decide to give The Croft Tea Rooms a go. We were not dissappointed, as we pulled up outside it looked ok but not many customers inside but we carried on in. We were greeted by a cheerful waitress who told us we could sit anywhere, as it was our anniversary we decided to go to the back of the room near the window. The waitress came to us with the menu and we chose one original and one sparkling afternoon tea, the sparkling one came with champagne, well it was a special occasion. We were told what the sandwiches were going to be, one of which was salmon, my husband doesn't do fish, this was not a problem and alternative would be done for him. The tea was proper tealeaf tea with a pot of boiling water on request. When the food arrived WOW! We were surprised by the amount of it, a selection of sandwiches, 2 Scones with cream and raspberry jam and 3 full sized cakes each. We had to ask for a box for the cakes as we couldn't eat them all, a proper cake box was supplied with a smile and a no problem. the cost of this was 13.95 for the original and 21.95 for the sparkling Rose tea, the Rose champagne sells for 50.00 a bottle and was very nice. If you're in the area between 2pm and 4.30pm give them a try.

We popped in on a Monday night as all the pubs in the immediate area that we usually go to don’t open on a Monday We arrive at 5:30 opening time and were hardly greeted by Shannon We hadn’t booked, but she found us a table There was a lovely selection of beers and wines and an amazing menu with specials of the day On Mondays they do a night where you can get a sirloin steak for £12 with all the trimmings They also specialise in seafood and there were a number of dishes this included prawns lobsters, monkfish et cetera Who made soup of the day was courgette and sweet potato and this is delicious Between us, we had a steak and kidney pie and there’s also an option of a steak and kidney pudding and two of us had prawn and lobster Thermidor, which was delightful There is a very nice atmosphere in the restaurant. The staff are lovely and the toilets are clean. Thank you, Shannon to you and your colleagues and we very much look forward to our next physics

Ok for a coffee but the staff were terrified of any customers. Not allowed to use the toilet. Long wait for coffee. Shouted at to wear masks we were already wearing. Seemed paralysed by fear - I would avoid even trying to sit inside. They were happy for people to sit outside. Though it was raining hard. Such a shame as a delightful village and would have been a nice break from our walk.

Tried this lovely pub for the first time earlier this week with friends for an evening meal off the weekday menu. I had Scampi which was wholetail, light batter , served with the best chips I’ve had in ages . Others had chicken and burger, all were beautifully cooked and quality ingredients. Eaton Mess was spot on and the sticky toffee and custard had us drooling ! The atmosphere was what you’d want in a lovely cosy country inn, the owners were very friendly, service friendly and quick without feeling rushed. They also accommodated our 2 large dogs offering a nice treat and water. We loved it that much we’ve just returned from Sunday lunch !! Prawn cocktail starters were excellent, more prawn than salad 👍, soup, black pudding and bacon , all served with a warm crusty roll, all were very good. 3 of us had roast beef dinners and one roast pork - the veg was cooked perfectly, as were the mash and roast potatoes. Yorkshire pudding were just right. None of us could find space for a pudding but the menu has something for everyone. We shall most definitely return again.

Excellent place. Clearly this last year has new management as this was a very good experience for 10 of us for lunch en route to our long weekend in Leyburn. Cosy log fire. Welcoming hand pulled cask (theakstons) pulled properly. Food excellent so to the service. Kerb side from road hides a super set up from the back and inside.
