We visited the Newman arms after work this week. The staff were absolutely brilliant and so friendly. Martin looked after us when we arrived and showed us to our table that we booked upstairs. Tom was super informative and told us about the beer that was locally brewed in Walthamstow and Mike was very friendly. Would defo recommend this pub and will be coming back again after work! X

Tiny little pub from the outside which you could easily miss, but a delight inside. The main area isn’t large at all but there’s a surprisingly large range of drinks, especially for gin lovers. The bar staff are friendly, nice and proactive and the seating is good for small groups or individuals. Lovely quiet option in the area and I’ll certainly be returning.

I am traveling across the U.K. with my two daughters and mother-in-law for three weeks. We are in London four days before we head north and each evening we have reservations at a restaurant we hope will be an experience. We had a 7 pm reservation made several weeks earlier and when we arrived the pub below was full but the small upstairs dining room was completely empty. We chose the curtained alcove which was quite nice. The feel was I am not quite sure how to describe it—maybe posh-pseudo-historical—is that a thing? It was certainly very pleasant maybe cozy even. The server was pleasant although I should make it clear that you should lower expectations somewhat as far as service. The food and atmosphere are what takes center stage here. We ordered: Fish and chips (fries for Americans) but we did have to request malt vinegar. I am not sure if that was an oversight or if you must always ask. I do not know which fish was used. This was pronounced delicious by my 15 year old who eats next to no fish and is not very adventurous in her dining. Burger. This came with bacon which was set aside and I am sure you could order it without bacon. There was also a small quantity of sauce and a pickle. It was served with chips (again fries). My youngest said the burger was excellent. Chicken and mushroom pie and a steak pie both which came with seasoned mashed potatoes and sauce to pour. I ate the chicken and mushroom pie and found that I was completely full after. I am very surprised to read that some diners felt this portion was small! The meat was tender and the flavors were nicely balanced. The crust was perfect. It is hard to get a good crust in the states like this unless you make it yourself at home so it was a very nice treat. My mother-in-law declared her own steak pie very good as well and also did not feel she needed more food. We tried to order the sticky toffee pudding and the apple crisp but only the apple crisp was available. This came with cream to pour. I saw some reviewers say the cream was too much but for the apple dessert it is definitely needed to make the dessert work. We ordered two coffees and both came about 3/4 of the cup full. This did not bother me but some diners might be annoyed not to see a full cup. I found the coffee very good. We did not have any of the lovely ale for which this establishment is known. If they had offered a small tasting on the menu I would have tried it but did not feel up to more. I should point out the menu is quite small featuring some starters which we did not try and various boards and pies. We came for the pies and were not disappointed. The only negative of course is the horrific price so I assume most of the diners upstairs are for special occasions or are tourists looking for a dining adventure. Please check the prices in advance. We spent about one hundred pounds for the four entrees one dessert and two coffees. I would not recommend this establishment for large groups (too small), budget travelers or people with very young children.

My wife and I popped in here for a couple of drinks prior to a nearby appointment. The staff I think were new, our drinks took quite a while to be delivered despite there being nobody else waiting to be served. The vodka was awful, it was their house vodka and I’d never heard of it but we decided to get out after one which was a shame. It’s a very intimate ground floor bar which was populated almost solely with staff from a nearby office, indeed further people from the same office came in and disappeared to the upstairs bar. The small bar below ground added more space but unless you’re keen on small spaces, this pub will not suit. Having said all of this I would still return; partly because it’s handy for a place I visit but also to try a different vodka and to give it another chance.

They didn't warn us but had booked in a large party so the only food they could offer were two pies even though we had already been served drinks and been given menus. What was served was OK. But this place has a good reputation for home made pies and good beers - it will not keep it unless they get a bit more savvy

The pub is aways pretty busy and the beer from Trumans is fine. Upstairs is a small dining room, which looks much older than it must be. There's a small menu, which specialises in pies. My friends had pies - which looked tiny - and my wife and I had a slat-beef bagel which was bizarrely covered in barbecue sauce. At £7 each they were expensive for what we got. Only two deserts were on the menu, one of which was unavailable. Service was unfriendly although not actively hostile. With a little more effort with the menu and the service this could be a nice quirky place for a quiet meal.

Lunch was great, staff was super - information and generous helping with beer samples/tasting etc. The pub has been completely re-vamped and unfortunately seems to have lost a bit of its olde world character - it has also changed from being a Fullers pub to Truman, but there is a good selection of beers (and gins) to choose from. Pie was excellent - an evening visit was enjoyed later and the bar staff brought round hot meat and mustard samples for customers, another nice touch. the old grotty loos have been replaced and it seems that a new basement area has been added, but not sure if there is a separate bar down there. It would be a nice area to book for a work function. We'll be back again soon.

Absolutely lovely and down to earth restaurant upstairs. They seemed only to serve steak which I would never normally order from a menu but I'm absolutely glad I did because the steak was heavenly in this place. The flavours out of this world. It felt a little expensive, but I wasn't thinking of the price whilst enjoying the great atmosphere, members of staff, and delicious food. Would recommend and will definitely be coming again.

I love steaks and a pop-up with selected meat at a decent price was an unmissable opportunity. Although you get a great value steak sandwich for £12.95 at lunch, for dinner £25 for steak & chips is a decent deal as well. My offer also included a glass of red wine and you get an excellent selection from Languedoc too! Located in a very small pub (dining room is upstairs), 5 minutes from Goodge St station, you will find the old lost tradition of English pubs: the host, Jon, is an incredibly friendly guy that will chat with you as you've been known each other for ages. He definitely went the extra mile to explain the concept and asking for feedback. The place seems family-run and you feel at home in few seconds. The steak looks small as it's quite thick so ask for medium-well if you fancy well cooked in the middle. The flavour was quite distinctive and matching the expectations. Good chips, too. The extra focaccia bread was prepared earlier in the morning so, reheated, was not very good, a bit too dry and not really fresh (so do order it only for lunch). No service charge but be generous with tips...

A cleaned up, idealized version of an english pub this is not...the Newman Arms is a dive in the absolute best sense of the word. Tiny, a bit dingy, with a somewhat limited selection of beers and liquors...but the sort of pub you walk in to and immediately feel at home in. Maybe not worth going out of your way to visit, but if you walk by and it's open (or if you're staying at the Charlotte Street Hotel, literally steps away), it's not to be missed
