What an absolutely fabulous Sunday roast. We all had something different, one had beef, one had chicken, one had pork and one had a nut roast. I had the beef, it was beautifully tender and plenty of it. The others said the same about theirs. I must mention the incredibly light, fluffy and crisp on the outside yorkshire puddings The staff were attentive, very polite and nothing was too much trouble, everything was with a lovely smile. The puddings were also fabulous especially the rhubarb and apple crumble (how could the chef make that crumble taste so good), and the ice cream and chocolate in a Yorkshire pudding was outstanding, loved it.

We have been coming here to eat for about 10 years, sadly we won't be back. The food was ok, hence 2 stars, but our booking should not have been taken as the restaurant was almost full with another party getting ready for a wedding tomorrow and so there was a lot of noise and people walking between tables. No problems with the party (although had to walk through a group of them smoking to get into the restaurant), but don't take a booking for 2 people when you are this full! We left after 80mins, £60 a head poorer, craving some peace!

Have been staying at the lodges for the week. The outstanding part of the trip has been the food, we have eaten here three times and have found the food faultless. The service also is exceptional we had two margaritas and they were really good. The tempura prawns for starters are a must.

We were recommended The Coach House by friends and we certainly weren’t disappointed. Love the beautiful location. Staff who served us were friendly and attentive and made us feel welcome. Great selection of cocktails which were gorgeous. The food was absolutely delicious. Scallops (with caviar) tasted amazing and I can’t remember tasting anything as delicious as my sea bass. Would recommend and hope to visit again when in the area.

The venue is wonderful - the brunch not so great!! This was really sad as we have eaten here other times and it was lovely. Eggs cooked solid, no butter on anything, small amount of hollandaise, shell in the eggs! Coffee was lovely. But all really overpriced for what it was. Not sure if the kitchen was having a bad day or if they need to up their fairly new brunch game to match their other service. Some of the staff were lovely, some need to stick a smile on - even if it might hurt!

We have stayed and visited the Kentisbury Grange a few times in the past but this time stayed in one of the garden lodges as the hotel was full. We look forward to our evenings at the coach house and see it as a treat to ourselves. The attention to detail and varied menu is part of the experience and often makes it difficult to choose as a “foodie” but I’ve never been left wanting. Pleasantly surprised as the accommodation was very comfortable and being a short distance away from the hotel and coach house it was so quiet. Warm, clean and had everything you could wish for with the added bonus as the weather was kind we were able to sit outside and watch an amazing meteor shower with little to no light pollution. We saw over 20 meteors which just added to the overall experience. The coach house serves some amazing food in the evening and we also had the breakfast which was included. Very pleasant staff, lovely location and so quiet. Other lodges were occupied but apart from seeing a couple in passing and a few lights on you would have thought we were on our own. We have always enjoyed our stays and visits in the past and once again we left fully relaxed and refreshed. The lodges are very comfortable, lovely showers, tea and coffee plus a fridge. Nicely laid out with a large comfortable bed. I opened the windows during the night as it was quite warm for my liking but the crisp fresh air was a bonus.

We booked some months ago thinking it was one of Michael Caines restaurants and were worried once we read a few reviews before our visit. We need not have worried though as the staff’s attentive service and the delicious food proves they have learnt all they need to from the great man when he was involved as a consultant type figure The atmosphere was lively and although the restaurant was busy, the service was very good. The manager even came over to ensure we were comfortable and happy with everything as he wanted to ensure our Son’s birthday celebration felt special. The menu was just Sunday lunch but the choice of starters and desserts were from the a la carte menu we had seen on the website. Wine and food was very reasonably priced. We had a really lovely experience and couldn’t recommend highly enough Thank you

Booked a table after reading reviews, We expected a decent meal, but, it exceeded our expectations. The service was excellent, the food better! The atmosphere was great, relaxed and professional. The Coach House is set in delightful gardens within a hotel and holiday lodge development, all of exceptional quality, ok it’s not cheap but it’s not expensive considering the quality product that it is serving. We will definitely be back.

FIRST TIME and DEFINATELY THE LAST, DISSAPOINTING + ZERO ATMOSPHERE - FACT ! REMEMBER EVERYONE TOP CHEF MICHAEL CAINE IS NO LONGER HERE, BE WARNED. When he was there the food was brilliant, not now with newer owners who obviously are skimping on a Top Grade Chef. This Restaurant is NOT FINE DINING by any means, 3-5 years ago maybe yes, but a lot has changed including Michael Caines involvement. Sancerre at £90 and Petit Chablis at £50 a bottle, get in the real world ! The Food was boring and in fact they forgot the extra vegetables [however they took that off the bill] The 'Black Venus' Pub, 8 miles away is a really great place to eat of which I have Zero association with, I simply drove to north Devon for a break, more like a Breakdown ! If you want an average overpriced meal this may be for you. If you are a Fine Diner and want the Tops this is not the Restaurant to go to - you have been warned ! Date of visit: March 2022

This place isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination however I feel the previous 1 star reviews on here do not portray a true/real picture of the place. We dined tonight 27.8.20 for the second time this week. The food is hit/miss it seems to have potential but it’s not quite there in truth, it’s not bad - average is a fair assessment. What’s really good is the surroundings, wine/gin/whisky offering and particularly the service. We were exceptionally well received on both visits from the waiting team and new manageress and because of this we can forgive the food issues and I’m still happy to rate it 3*. The manageress (whom did tell us her name but mortifyingly we’ve forgotten) was genuinely interested in conversing with us and getting feedback and it was a pleasure to speak to someone so passionate about wanting improve taking the criticism of the food onboard professionally and without offence. We were sat at the end of the walkway to the kitchen and so were very aware of the kitchen staff shouting ‘service’ sometimes within a matter of seconds they’d shout it again but more abruptly which was a little embarrassing and over the top so I don’t know if there’s a better way to alert the waiting staff, just an observation. We wish you all well and we are confident that within a very short time with some food consistency you could be onto something very special.

On 27th July, following a disastrous visit to the recently reopened Coach House restaurant, I wrote the following letter to Mr Stephen Brown, Director of Inspired Hotels Limited, the new owners of Kentisbury Grange and the Coach House Restaurant, asking if he would care to comment. "I visited the Coach House for Sunday lunch, along with my wife and two friends. I had previously read a couple of genuine looking TripAdvisor reviews and, as a result was fearful of what might await us. However, despite my suggestion we go elsewhere, my friends were keen to go to your restaurant as they had enjoyed their visits on previous occasions. I regret my trepidation turned out to be well founded. I was aghast when presented with a £10.00 smoked salmon starter – comprising, one slice of smoked salmon, some capers and a piece of white, ready sliced bread cut in half. Nothing else! With VAT at 5 percent I calculate the gross profit on this this to be at least 90 percent and any self respecting five year old could have made a better job of presentation. My wife and I were appalled and embarrassed. We did not comment to our waiter, who was pleasant but completely lacking in any relevant skills, as our friends were clearly keen to make the best of a bad job on their first venture out after the coronavirus lock-down, during which time one of them had been seriously ill in hospital. Hence, this letter bringing the sad state of affairs at the Coach House restaurant to your attention. The main course roast was slightly more fairly priced but not good with, for instance congealed gravy granules/thickener. The third course, a selection of cheeses at £8.00 would have been of better value too, except the cheese was old and dry and it was served with the same commercial white sliced toaster loaf bread, again without butter, as accompanied the smoked salmon starter.I too have enjoyed excellent food at this place under previous ownership, now it is just awful."I had (naively, it now appears) anticipated a prompt response from a caring new owner, keen to explain the appalling experience my party had endured and what steps he is taking to improve matters. Not so, and therefore it is with some regret that I have felt compelled to share with others my experience and the apparent lack of concern, let alone contrition regarding the matter by the new owners. At the time of my visit, and until very recently the new owners were even claiming a continuing association with the renowned chef, Michael Caines; how he must have cringed!

We found this lovely restaurant by chance, looking for somewhere for the last night of our holiday. I was very concerned after reading the reviews, but thought we would give it a go anyway. I shouldn’t have worried, we have had a lovely evening! The setting is beautiful. All the staff were very welcoming and the service was great. In this covid world we felt very comfortable that all tables were seated a good distance apart and although they were full it did not feel crowded and everywhere looked clean. The food was delicious. A good choice. The Hake was yummy and the Steak was cooked perfectly as requested! The kids meals were also really good. Clean plates all round. Desserts didn’t disappoint either. Highly recommend the raspberry Eton Mess!! All in all a really lovely evening. The children said they would eat there every night and if we weren’t going home tomorrow we would definitely be returning! A shame we only found you on our last night!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We were disappointed as soon as we were given the menu. Fish and Chips, Burger and Steak and Chips made up 50% of the main course choices. We ordered steak (nothing else appealed) at £27 we expected it to be good, it wasn't. Bearing in mind it's August the desert choices were Crumble, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate Brownie - fine for an Autumn/Winter menu I guess.I ordered the cheese board which was very poor - brie, cheddar and stilton and 3 multi grain crackers with grapes and chutney. It tasted like basic catering cheese. It was £10.50! I left nearly early all of it. It would have been so easy to provide 3 decent artisan or interesting Devon cheeses. I understand the restaurant is under new management and no longer affiliated to Michael Caines and I understand the new owners wanting to do their own thing but instead it felt like a real lost opportunity. By making more effort choosing a menu that reflected the season and was a little more imaginative they would not alienate the regular local customers. Breakfast was a disaster - the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with wholegrain toast arrived without the toast and by the time it turned up we'd eaten it all. Ran out of orange juice also.. We will not be returning to The Coach House. On the plus side the service in the hotel was excellent, the staff could not have been lovelier or more helpful.

We were greeted to say they had not received our booking even though we had a confirmation call an hour before.Tables are not sat by the government guidelines aka the booths too close together. Obviously they cant be moved but should be every other. Food was at most expensive pub grub. No cocktails which were always a selling point. Only got 4 stars giving benefit of doubt, hopefully it will pick up standards to what it used to be as will rely on local trade to get through the winter months. Nice location.nice setting. So, where to start? We are local and went on a Tuesday evening to check out the new menu which we were told previously by staff was like a gastro pub.So, the service was well intentioned but not particularly professional (I don't expect to be asked what I want and for the server to then start a chat with another member of staff so I am waiting to order, it was also disappointing to be given an out of date menu initially). We asked if we could have a 2 of the starters as mains (yes, no problem) so we ordered food and drink and waited. The setting is still good so we were optimistic although suprised at how expoensive things were - £15 (I think) for a burger - although we optimistically thought that maybe the food quality would be exceptional! In a way we were right, it was exceptional, exceptionally poor.So we ordered poach egg, chips and chorize. This came without the chorizo, the incomplete plate was left on the table to cool whilst a single slice of warmed chorizo was bought to the table. Is that it? asked our 8 year old - apparently so. By now some of the chips were soggy as the poached egg had come with a certain amount of water which had been left on the plateThe salt and pepper squid was an abomination - bland, 4 miniscule rings of deep fried calamari - tasted weird, goodness only knows what it had been fried in and it tasted like everything had been produced in isolation and then plonked on the plate. £9 (I think) seemed totally excessive. My wife asked for the salt and pepper squid as a main, a starter turned up, we queried it and got told it would be corrected. Again the plate was left on the table, my wife tasted it and said she couldn't eat it so the server was asked not to bring anything additionalI had a beefburger it was supposed to come with blue cheese - it didn't. The quality of the ingredients was medicore. The skin on fries were not skin on fries. No condiments were provided or offered, I asked for ketchup and got a selection of condiments in those little foil packs - really? Basically to be fair the burger and chipos were like Weatherspoons or airport food and that is fair enough if you are in a Weatherspoons or the airport - this was £15 at a "Gastro pub and completely unacceptable. We did not have dessert, we couldn't face it. We got the bill - which to be fair had been heavily discounted - but to be fair even if we had been paying a penny, it would have been a penny too much. The cocktail that my wife had was excellentThank goodness for the Pyne Arms - there is still somewhere decent to eat locally.

This place has recently changed hands and you can tell that no body cares about the food. If they had eaten it there is no way they would have served it. The portions were tiny. I’m writing this review whilst eating a bowl of cereal having just left the restaurant. Most of the food was bad but particularly the chips. They tasted strongly like “morning breath” and were completely disgusting and inedible. The staff clearly know how bad the food is as no one came to check if we were enjoying it. My friend left an entire plate of burnt burger and stinky chips and no one batted an eyelid. As a vegan I’m pretty used to getting what I’m given in restaurants. My expectations are very low, however this was laughable. My main was a third of a courgette with 2 small pieces of broccoli and a piece of asparagus. It was smaller than the starter which in fairness was fine-ish. No dessert for a vegan, not even a bowl of fruit or a sorbet so I wouldn’t sit there like lemon as my friends ate their strange deserts. Including the most budget cheeseboard I have ever seen in my life. Like I said, you don’t expect miracles when going out to eat to a non vegan joint but you also don’t expect to pay £25 for an incredibly tiny potion of badly cooked vegetables. The whole meal was grossly overpriced. We feel like we’ve been robbed. And I’m more hungry now that when I went in there. The Malbec was nice. Couldn’t tell you which one it was or where it came from though as the menu only states the grape. Odd.None of us will ever return.

We ate here one night as we were staying in a lodge. Although the accommodation was fantastic, the same cannot be said for the dining experience. I am sure that it will improve, as everyone is only just getting used to socially distancing dining and serving. However, the service was slow and presentation of food was poor. It was not good value for money and really just very average. This was a shame as the venue for dining was very nice and the staff were all extremely pleasant, just really seemingly under trained.

Let me be clear, I love this restaurant and have eaten here on numerous occasions. However, during my most recent visit during the brilliant Exmoor Food Festival month, I was very disappointed with the range of low alcohol beers that were available. The Coach House is located in a rural area. So someone is going to have to be the 'dedicated driver'. It fell to me on this occasion. So I asked what non or low alcohol beers the Coach House offered. Well, they only had Peroni. Now I like Peroni but in the summer and not on a cold February day. There are now so many really excellent UK brewed low alcoholic beers available and the restaurant really needs to embrace the growing market for these beers and increase their offer to guests.

We have visited the Coach House several times, and it is our « go to » place for celebrations. We prefer the two- or three-course lunch menu which is excellent value. The dishes are always beautifully presented and flavourful. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable.

What a treat! Arriving at The Coach House we were greeted by the most welcoming staff who made sure I could gain access in my Electric Wheelchair. The restaurant had a lovely Christmas Tree and the layout was fantastic- plenty of room between tables. You could also see the chefs at work via the glass fronted kitchen! As the menu is constantly changing we viewed both the taster menu and the a la carte whilst we had a pre dinner drink - the girls had a glass of champagne whilst I had a GnT! We chose to order from the a la carte and placed our order with our waiter who answered any questions. We then were served freshly baked bread and a surprise taster dish of Cream of Onion Soup - delicious was the verdict. Our starters then arrived delicately presented - we chose Scallops and a Salmon Rillet (mouse) - there was a bit of swapping as we wanted a taste! It was brilliant! Our mains were Venison and Pork Belly again meticulously presented - the taste was fantastic! To accompany our main course we chose from the comprehensive wine list a lovely velvety Pinot Noir which was very good. We then had dessert - Regional Cheese with a glass of Port, Apple Parfait and a Chocolate Panacotta again superb! Coffees and a Brandy ended a great evening. The staff were brilliant, no pressure to hurry, explaining/describing each dish as it was served, talking about the drinks/wine we ordered it was fantastic! It was for me our best meal of the year! All in All Fine Dining at its Best!

We ate here whilst staying in The Grange. Very well laid out & relaxing restaurant. The staff were perfect without being over the top. Great range of drinks & wine & the food was amazing . We went for the taster & couldn’t fault it. Better than some Michelin star establishments we’ve ate in. Surprised they don’t have one to be honest. The breakfasts were fantastic as well. Great choice with great ingredients cooked to perfection.

Delicious afternoon tea to celebrate my Dad’s 90th birthday. I loved the sandwiches. The scones were huge! The cakes were rich and I couldn’t eat it all so we were able to take a ‘doggy bag’ home to eat them later. We ate in the main hotel in the lounge by a roaring fire as it was very quiet and a ‘Monday’. Staff were kind and helpful.

We stayed for a full week at the hotel, which is just amazing, our good points are the staff were just outstanding and always polite and always had time of a short conversation. The breakfasts were great, our only let down was the evening menu we were told that it changes evey 3 weeks and the menu we had on offer for our week was not to our taste so sadly did not try the evening meals.

Hidden away, restaurant had a good feel, although a real downside was the fact that the restaurant was not well heated and did take the edge of the dining experience.

It’s in the middle of nowhere, and not cheap, but worth the trip. The beef was cooked soups vide, with a little braised beef on the side, and was quite simply the best I have had anywhere. The atmosphere was relaxed and staff were very friendly and helpful. The person who made up the bill made a major error, but fortunately I caught it. Other than that, everything was perfect.

Very much enjoyed dinner at the Coach House. Very good food indeed at £50 for three courses, and very well served by friendly staff. All the care taken in selection and presentation you would expect for a high end establishment, with the bonus of a generous amuse bouche. Lamb and Dover sole main courses were spot on, My dessert, with strawberry muse, sorbet & panna cotta exceptional.

My wife and I chose the tasting menu and I also had the wine pairings for the meal. Each course was described and the reasons for the accompanying wine were explained. The food was wonderful, quite intense flavours, but because the portions were small, the taste was never overwhelming. We had a superb experience, which was enhanced by our waitress/sommelier. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are looking for something a bit different, but not too unusual
