Discovered The Clerkenwell Kitchen by chance as I was in the area so went in and had a look at the menu as I needed to find a restaurant for lunch. Mains were about £14 and there were a few that looked good. While I was there, I spotted this bread pudding which made me dine there. I am so glad I took a photo of the bread pudding because the presentation of that one was better the one served as the cream was not all over the place so I couldn't do the bread pudding justice. Settled for the Chalk Stream Trout Fishcakes with Marinda Tomatoes & Tartar Sauce. The roast chicken was tempting but then I saw a whole roasted chicken in the kitchen which means it is going to be reheated thus the fish cakes option. The fish cakes were made to order which explains the soft texture but had a few bones. Other than that, the whole dish was amazing and paired nicely with the tomatoes and dill dressing and tartar. Finished with the marmalade & chocolate bread and butter pudding with cream. When it arrived, the first thing I tried was the cream, I was really pleased it was not sweetened and it was interestingly warm. The portion was quite big and satisfying, the best thing was that it tasted like proper bread and butter pudding with smooth egg curd here and there. The dark chocolate complemented the marmalade orange peel nicely. Overall, I really recommend this place especially the desserts and it is good to see they serve proper bread and butter sides as opposed to the fancy stuff.

What a great place to visit. Nine of us dined here, a works area celebration. From start to finish the evening was excellent. Service was top notch, nothing was too much trouble. The starters were superb. Crab rarebit was my choice and it didn’t disappoint. After a bit of a chat and a fag break for some, the mains arrived. No small portions here. Haddock ( the size of which I’ve never seen before) served with biggest fluffiest chips you could imagine. After the plates were cleared and another break for chatting, desserts were delivered to the table. Like the previous 2 course, they were excellent. The team front & back of house were brilliant from our arrival to our departure. My only grumble, why had I not found this place before now.

We went for lunch. My friend ordered the lamb. The chef warned him: “I got a thick piece of lamp - it would take me at least 20mins to cook it”. This is not the place they defrost and quickly microwave food. They cook and they know how to do it well. Simple food, well matched thanks to a great food culture. Definitely my favourite place in the area.

I organised a staff summer social to take place on a Saturday afternoon for about 40 people. Laura and Emma put together a seasonal buffet menu which I made no changes to. They created a beautiful looking and tasting menu which was exactly what everyone didn't know they wanted to eat on a nice summer's afternoon. The whole team (front and back of house) were friendly and highly attentive and took my basic brief and turned it into a fantastic reality, so that once things kicked off I could join in too. A bonus was that we were able to use the outdoor area, as if private. It is shared with neighbouring workshops/offices but barely occupied at the weekend which was great. The restaurant itself is homely and peaceful, set back a couple minutes' walk from the main Clerkenwell Road giving it a welcome peacefulness. We had our choice of music playing in the background which created a comfortable atmosphere for guests to arrive to. Food 10/10. Staff 10/10. Location 9/10. Would recommend and return. I'm sorry I have no pictures to show how great it was... I was too busy having a nice time!

Always passing by this place, so I went for coffee today. After making an order, I was looking for where to sit. The long table next to the window was taken. So I asked whether I could take one table in the main hall. One staff (the first staff) said ‘yes, go ahead.’ Soon after, however, another staff with blonde/white hair (the second staff) came to me and asked whether I was gonna have a lunch. I said no. Then she said I could stay sitting here but she might have to ‘throw you out’ to other places if people would come for lunch. Slightly offended, I said I would just sit on the bar. The first staff gave my coffee and said I could have sit there in the hall. But I said it’s all right. While I was having my coffee and finalising my work, the second staff abruptly asked me ‘have you ordered the coffee?’ I was a bit confused because 1) I had already ordered coffee when I entered and 2) I had had the half of the coffee. I replied to her yes and asked why. She said ‘oh just to make sure.’ The way she talked is like I was just sitting there without ordering coffee or food. Another offending. Later, the first staff gave me a piece of brownie, probably because of this awkward situation. Although I really appreciate the first staff’s favour, I may not come again because of the second staff. She’s rude, judging, and implicitly discriminating. I would have given one star out of five in this review, but three because of the first staff.

What a fantastic little place this is. The menu changes daily, depending on what's in season and what is available. The food is top quality and superb value. This really is a hidden gem of a place. I've been here a couple of times and on my most recent visit, I had what might be the finest roast beef sandwich I've ever eaten (£6.50, eating in). The other two people I was with had lunch mains, one was a cheese tart (£9/£10ish) and the other was the vegan option (£9/£10ish), respectively. They both said the food was excellent, and it certainly looked it. The service is warm and friendly, whilst being attentive. The whole thing was about £30 with a drink each.

We eat here quite a lot because our office is in this block, but it's a lovely place to come. It's quite canteen-like inside with people having lunch meetings (rather than cosy and intimate), but the food is excellent and service friendly. It's also one of the few places in Clerkenwell where you can bring your dog! I ate here twice in one week (lunches) and had interesting ingredients each time: runner beans, fennel, a few other veggies I haven't had for ages. Lovely pastry in the quiche, thick and tasty sweetcorn chowder, and my colleague had a beetroot 'cake' (potato, beetroot, onion) which he said was delicious. You order at the till which adds to the canteen-y atmosphere but I don't think you'll be disappointed with the food.

We booked the Clerkenwell Kitchen for our PA lunch as it's near the office and always reliable for good food. Unfortunately childcare arrangements let me down which meant that I had to take my 17 month old child along with me. I called ahead in advance to ensure the table was big enough to seat a high chair and was told that they didn't have any high chairs at present, as they were in the process of getting some in. All was fine when we arrived as it was pretty quiet so we sat in the general breakout area outside, which was lovely. When it came to ordering the waiter seemed unfamiliar with the menu and they didn't have any food that seemed to cater for toddlers, but he was able to provide a bowl of chips for my little one. Service was slow but everything was very tasty as it always is. After our meal a few of us decided to order dessert. Once again it took a while for us to receive what we ordered, but we were all happy with our choices. All in all a good lunch, but it just took too long for everything to come out. I'm all for a relaxed atmosphere but I think the staff were probably a little too chilled out when we visited.

This local-feeling restaurant is open from breakfast until afternoon and uses local produce whenever possible. I met a friend for breakfast and we both had poached eggs on sourdough toast (and I had a side of bacon too!) - with 3 lots of tea and a cappuccino the bill was under £20 which i thought was a great bargain for London! Found this address in "le routard". Took a bit of time to find it but was worth It! We had a delicious frittata with spinash and goat cheese and a really Nice salade. Still Some place left for the cake....really Nice. Also a plus : we received immediately without asking water with slices lemon! The interior is trendy

I come here regularly for takeaways, sometimes for lunch or breakfast. And keep coming back. So why no review until now? Perhaps it's because the place is so friendly and easy I forget it's actually a really rather ambitious restaurant as well as the local supplier of sourdough toast. Not dirt cheap - if you want a British fry-up you can pay a lot less than £8.50, even in achingly hip Clerkenwell, and the lunch dishes start at around £9 and go up from there. But what you won't get in other caffs are the carefully sourced, top quality ingredients and the painstaking, if sometimes a little hit and miss combinations and cooking. (More artisanal than fancy/cheffy, I'm glad to say.) And the sandwiches - takeaway from £3.90 to around £4.40 for fabulous salt beef, for example - are a lot better than a limp soi-disant gourmet wrap. I don't agree with other reviewers about either service or coffee - they have both been lovely. If service is slower it's because the cooking is careful, freshly to order, and proudly on show. Come in early and the lunchtime quiches are lining up for their fillings on the counter, next to that day's batch of chocolate brownies. Highlights have been a rainbow beetroot and goat's cheese salad, a potato and fennel bake and a very meaty, porky sausage with my breakfast. So, the bacon was rather well cooked? I like it like that. The orange juice is freshly squeezed and the fruit and veg a farmers' market of colour and seasonality. How do I know? You trip over that day's deliveries on the way in. In summer the communal courtyard is equipped with tables, mostly accessorised by MacBook Airs and the designerati. Wish it stayed open after 5.

Visited the area for the design show, so this was a random choice, but what a good one, the Rose wine was very nice and well chilled, the two salads really good, the staff coped well considering it was really busy.

Clerkenwell Kitchen is a great find for breakfast and lunch... it has space, light, nice John Minton-type pictures and lots of bare brick - and it also has really good food, in the 'Modern British' idiom but without any claim to be part of some overcooked 'genre'. I'd choose it for lunch over Moro, actually, and it's a lot cheaper. It doesn't normally open in the evening unfortunately - wish it did. Much of the daytime traffic is business from the local design and architecture communities, who are very exacting clients. If you're in town give it a go - the location is nice, too... a real London quartier.

This is a very nice little café / bar / restaurant in the heart of Clerkenwell.Stopped by whilst on a business trip and found the menu to be reasonable with a good selection of 'speciality' items as well as more traditional fare.Being over 50, balding and a bit overweight I was aware that I was sharing the venue with young, trendy, 'arty' types; not a problem - just made me feel my years :)

I have to give this place kudos on the quality of food served. It is simply superb, fresh and organic, I cannot complain about the food. If we were going strictly on food it would be 5 stars, but then we are not going strictly on the food so I have to take off 1 star for the too high prices and then another two stars for the serviceThe main complaint I have about this place is the staff. They are the only things that put me off going in there when I really fancy a poached egg on rye-bread toast in the mornings. If they aren't busy purposefully ignoring you, they are speaking you in a patronising manner or just hanging around looking bored like they were strong armed into work by the staff at the local mental hospital. There is only one woman in there who is polite and friendly and unfortunately she cooks rather than serves.

Working in the adjacent office block, I use the Clerkenwell Kitchen a lot for business lunches. On this occasion it was very busy, which caused a slight delay in ordering but the food when it arrived was excellent as usual. The kedgeree was fantastic and the chocolate brownies were top notch. They also make a great coffee. Not cheap but definitely worth it. Would recommend to anyone unless you're in a rush as it does get busy and there can be a wait.

I was here last Weekend - I wanted to have breakfast and am quite happy that I found this place - the seasonal soup with bread was awesome and they also have freshly baked goods and takeaway menu. Also, the service is very good and the girl that was there was polite and with a smile on her face.

Three Course has changed food and concept without amending the website. Now it's a short menu of burgers and ribs instead of simple, fresh Scandinavian style. Cooking was atrocious even for the new simplified food. A veal chop cooked to leather. Soft shell burger squidgy and unpleasant. No sides or veg or salads. The "chef" simply can't cook. You have the feeling they are running this place by the seat of their pants - economically that is. David, the very nice and embarrassed manager, told us the owner had gone to work in another restaurant. Other customers have complained that it isn't what they expected. On the plus side, the interior decor is quirky and appealing and the wine list has some delicious, well-priced labels but, on the basis of our experience, it's unlikely to stay open much longer.

Really awesome atmosphere with fluffy warm croissants and other premium pastry. Why have you got terrible staff? These guys will lose you customers very quickly. I ordered a flat white coffee, and I was given a coffee that tasted like microwaved milk with a shot of espresso and he put chocolate on top. Clearly this guy isn't a trained barista. Also, if I eat in, you normally serve coffee in a proper cup and not a paper cup. There were a few other customers who came in and tried to buy stuff but your employees were not there for over 10 mins and so they left. Employ well trained baristas who also are excellent at being hospitable and Temptations will rock.

I really like the coffee and matcha latte. The interior design is nice as well. But unfortunately the music is too loud, it’s hard to relax there or have a proper conversation. I organise socials after my dance classes and I used to come every Saturday with a group of girls (4-6 of us). Last time I asked the barista to turn down the music a little bit and she refused. We were the only visitors there at that time. The barista said something about the cafe policy and that in other cafes the music is even louder. I didn’t get it at all. Unfortunately I have to choose another much quieter cafe to go with my group. It’s impossible to speak without shouting there. Quite annoying.
