The Clarence in Oldham

Worst pub I have ever been in. Staff are rude and food arrived cold. Had to wait to long. I wish I could put no stars. Not a good experience would never go again.

Monday lunch time visit, staff very welcoming and friendly. Food excellent, the pedigree ale 🍺 was excellent too! Will definitely visit again when in the area.

Came yesterday as a table of 7 and had a variety of meals including Sunday lunch , the rag pudding, gammon and a burger. I had the sunday lunch which was really Good quality! All of the food was hot fresh and tasty, meals were plentiful. Starters were also really nice see picture it’s the only one I took! The girls who served us were all very friendly and professional great customer service 😊 Would return!

I was there for Mother’s Day with family, after being seated it took ages to get a drink then we had to go and find someone to take our food order. A couple sat behind us, came in after us and had finished their meal and paid before our food even arrived! Terrible service, probably one of the worst we’ve ever had. The food was nice though, but was spoilt by everything else. Definitely wouldn’t go back!

We arrived here after a lovely walk. Lovely clean pub, staff welcoming and very considerate of me being gluten free, and discussed possible cross contamination from the fryer. Very attentive to detail. It was greatly appreciated as not all places have this level understanding The food was lovely, I had the gammon, and my friend had the cheese onion pie which she loved. The chunky chips were lovely and not greasy. Toilets were very clean, and lovely touch with the free sanitary wear in the ladies. Dog friendly Lovely pub grub, very flavoursome well cooked. Glad we found this pub on our travels today it was well worth the visit. Prices I would say are similar to most.

The staff were welcoming and the food was ok, but nothing special and certainly not worth the price. We didn't know who was serving us and each time we asked for something it got forgotten about. Too many very young staff and no one seemed to know what they were supposed to be doing. The food was alright but very pricey for pub grub. The toilets were grubby with no toilet paper and an overflowing bin, not nice at all. We stayed for a short time after our meal but were made to feel like we were in the way as one of the staff members got out the hoover and started it up. The smell coming from the hoover was disgusting so we gladly left. I doubt very much that we will be back.

Been a few times now...(including tonight) I've had the steak which is always good. Possibly not quite up to the standard of some of local gastro pubs...but incredible value for money. My only negative is the slightly odd opening hours...shuts quite early.

We visited for a family Sunday lunch 2 adults and 3 children 8-12. Service was brilliant friendly and efficient. Myself and my husband had roast beef dinner, my son who is 12 had the Burger off the main menu and my 8 year Old daughters had the kids burgers. The food was Devine..lovely soft and tasty beef, a nice vegetable selection, huge yorkshire pudding and just the right amount of tasty gravy. We also had chocolate brownies, crumble and a cheese cake for desert. All sublime..the kids brownies were huge for £4. The children's mains were free! An offer they have on currently at weekend. The bill was less than £100 including 2 pints and 2 large glasses of wine and pints of diet Coke for the kids.

Lovely, dog friendly pub! Went for a walk round dovestones and popped in here after. The food was lovely and the staff were exceptional and really friendly with the dogs. Would definitely go back here!

Living locally I used to call at the Clarence years ago and sit outside of a Summer’s evening drinking a quiet reflective pint or two having walked the dogs up Chew Valley and back. To be fair it was mostly a drinking den in those days although as I recall some food was served but not haute cuisine. Inside there were cast iron round tables out of the Edwardian era and worst of all the walls were mainly painted black for some reason. I knew it had changed hands since those days and had been “done up” but I had not been in there for a few years. So, having been invited by some friends to enjoy a pre-Christmas gathering and meal with them at said venue the Saturday before Christmas I was a little apprehensive as to what I would find. Words really cannot convey how much it was now changed from the Clarence of old. The moment I entered there was a warm welcoming atmosphere. No more black painted walls. All bright colours, lighting and Christmas decorations. People sat at tables or standing around having a drink and enjoying themselves. All totally revamped. We all settled down at our allocated table and once seated were frequently approached by staff and asked if we wanted any more drinks although it was no inconvenience to get up and go for our own where the bar staff were attentive and efficient even though the room was crowded and very busy. Given this was Christmas time we were given two menus. One seasonal and one ordinary with both offering food of the highest order. And we were given plenty of time to consider what we would order, probably something that others would consider as being unacceptable, but not to us. I don’t like being rushed in ordering. We were waited upon by two lovely young ladies who in my opinion should not have been out without their mothers, but were totally professional in all they did, and were, and here I am not being sexist, beautifully made made up, smartly dressed in a uniform of sorts, nicely spoken and very polite. The only thing that amused me was when one of the party asked what was the fish of the day and one of these young ladies said it was fresh water Cod which caused some hilarity but not at her expense. She went away to seek clarification and came back to say it was Chalk water Trout and which those who had it said it superb. A slight downside but of no consequence was that those in the party who wanted filet steak were disappointed since it was all gone. However the rump steaks they had were done to perfection whether rare, medium or well done. As for me I had pigs in blankets for starters expecting one sausage and a spoon of dressing only to be delighted to receive six large sausages and a large amount of dressing which was excellent, and to be honest would have served as a main course at home. I ordered rag pudding for my main course but asked the waitress if I could have garden peas with it instead of mushy peas as on the menu. And I got them. The rag pudding, gravy and chips were superb, and what I really appreciated was that the portion was not overwhelmed by the accompanying chips as found in some other Saddleworth eateries. Shortly after the young ladies had taken our orders we were attended by the proprietor/manager who apologised that there would be a slight delay in our being served due to a larger party having got their order in before us. This didn't matter to our party, but it was very nice to be kept informed. Only one of us partook of desserts and they really enjoyed their cheese board which was as varied in it’s cheeses and pickles as it was generous in it's portions. It was a very reasonable price for the evening, (I let my wife pay !!!), which included later in the evening a very good live group singing recognisable songs for the age group in attendance, after the enjoyment of background music of Christmas standards earlier in the evening. All in all a great night out. Good company, good service, good food, good atmosphere and especially good surroundings with so much changed from the Clarence of before. I look forward to eating there again sometime soon.

Family friendly pub with a cosy but lively atmosphere and great, fresh, tasty food. Attentive and friendly staff make the experience all the better. Decor is fresh and tastefully done and the pub has been dressed beautifully for Christmas. Called in after seeing posts on social media of the Sunday lunch offering and it did not disappoint. Beautiful pink roast beef, huge tasty & crisp Yorkshire pudding, well seasoned roasties and perfectly cooked, fresh vegetables including brocolli, cauliflower, carrots, red cabbage, sugar snap peas and parsnips. The plates were impressive and presented really nicely. A good selection of desserts were available. We tried the chocolate brownie and sticky toffee. These looked and tasted amazing. The brownie was rich and fudgey with a slightly crackled and crispy top and the sticky toffee sponge had a lovely light texture with a sweet, almost burned toffee tasting sauce. The price was excellent value for what we had and we will definitely be returning. Hopefully for the festive menu which looks superb value and sounds great. The childrens menu was also nice with the usual suspects. Again freshly prepared and nicely presented. Our 6 year old ate every scrap and said it was really yummy. The menu is also an activity sheet which kept her entertained.

Ww arrived late in Greenfield and this was the 1st bar we encountered, what a lucky find, the staff were welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable regarding the menu. The food didn’t disappoint, my partner had rag pudding for the first time, it was so good and it came with mushy peas and home made chunky chips, so delicious. It was so good we ate there the next night too, I had a meatball marinara panini, my partner had sausage and mash, again the food was delicious and an Aperol spritz perfectly finished off the meal, can’t wait to return.

We were welcomed into the clarence by the owner who was extremely helpful as we hadn't booked a table for four, looking at the menu it was very good covering all tastes, The service was very good nothing was too much trouble , everyone enjoyed their meal which were very tasty and generous, overall I would highly recommend the clarence.

A****! Myself, my partner and our woofer came here from a nearby lodge park, once on a Saturday evening and then again on a Sunday evening. The food, service, portion sizes, price, waiting time, atmosphere and overall pub appearance is amazing. We couldn’t have asked for anything better and the team (Lewis, Naomi, Izzy & James) couldn’t have done any more for us. They’re REALLY dog friendly and there isn’t one negative thought about this place. Unfortunately, both visits we didn’t take a lot of photos as we were too busy enjoying the food!

Me and my wife went to the Clarence for dinner, once sat at a table , Lewis came and took our orders. He recommended the Rag pudding (which I’ve never had before) . It was absolutely delicious. The food and service was so good that we came again the following evening and were not disappointed. Many thanks to all the staff who were very efficient, and lastly but not least the chef who produced some of the most amazing dishes we’ve ever had.

Stumbled in this place after a hike around the local reservoir and up to The Trinnacle. Food was pretty damn good and the service from the two young servers was fantastic. Dog friendly too which is a bonus.

We visited the Clarence today after a lovely walk at Dovestone reservoir. We chose it because of the many good reviews. I think those reviewers went to a completely different restaurant!!! The menu was ok, and emphasised home made food. We ordered the "home made" cheese and onion pie with delicious chunky chips and the classic burger. 45 minutes later we were still waiting, despite there being very few customers.We thought this meant the food was being made and cooked freshly. However when it eventually arrived it was inedible. The burgers were leathery, tasteless, had a very peculiar texture and taste. The bacon was cold and the cheese was weird. The cheese and onion pie was hard, overcooked and was definitely not home made. The chunky chips tasted like they had been cooked the previous day and warmed up. I could not eat them. We were really disappointed and complained. We were then offered free desserts, which we declines as we thought they would be of the same abysmal quality. The waitresses were lovely and offered us free drinks. A different waitress then asked us to pay for the drinks at the behest of the owner. We declined!!!!This was one of the worst meals in a pub we have ever experienced and I would recommend you never visit. But the waitresses were kind, apologetic and helpful. Perhaps the owner should be on site rather than on the end of a phone and do some quality control.

I came on saturday without a booking and was seated straight away. Excellent staff that were very helpful and friendly. The food was delicious i had the rag pudding and my boyfriend had the peri peri burger which was huge!!! Couldnt recommend this place enough.

Steak sandwich inedible due to it being very poor cut/quality of meat all gristle, we was approached by waitress asking how our meal was to which our disappointment was aired she did ask if we wanted something else, but didn’t want to wait a further 30 minutes for a replacement meal to eat alone. Unfortunately no discount whatsoever offered on bill, and no follow up from management. poor customer service.

On our way home from our camping trip we decided our holiday did not need to end so we called into The Clarence for a meal. We called and booked a table on our way down the motorway and explained that we could be delayed, when we got there it was ready and waiting for us. We ordered some drinks, a sharing platter starter and two steak meals, a child’s meal and a peri peri burger. All our meals were cooked to perfection and as a regular visitor at a well known franchise steak house we felt that the steak meals were just as nice and well presented. Portion sizes were very generous and the customer service was spot on too. Thank you

Arrived on a very busy Thursday afternoon, staff were very welcoming on arrival, sat us straight down got our drinks order. We then ordered our mains, I ordered fish & chips, my wife ordered the steak sand which which was incredible! & my fish & chips was amazing! The chips are the best I’ve had for a while. I enjoyed it that much I thought I’d have a 3rd course, I ordered the waffle with Nutella, & my wife had the Eton mess cheese cake, all absolutely delicious. The staff are very professional & very attentive. Lots to offer ale & larger wise, I tried the Tigar rut which was one of the 3 ales that was on & I really enjoyed it. We’ve recently just moved into the area & would highly recommend this place. Best place we’ve been to yet.

We are local and on the way after a huge walk we stopped by for Steak Sandwiches ! Honestly sooooooo nice ! The kids smashed in their sausage and burger in no time and that’s very rare occasion. Best pub chips in town ! Highly recommended and the staff are very nice, polite and welcoming.

Called in with my wife Christine for tea , i ordered scampi and chips which was mediocre and on small side , Christine the sloppy Joes burger which was run of the mill. We were welcomed in on arrival but bar staff and waitresses just all stood about talking at the bar and not professional at all. If u had a meal they were all over you but just in for a drink got you less attention. Place ok but need to step up.

We're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park and decided to walk here (15-20 mins) for drinks and an early dinner.They were able to accommodate us, they have space inside and multiple outside spaces as well as a gezebo area in the car park (as many pubs have done to extend seating capacity during COVID). Staff were welcoming and happy to organise a high chair for our 8 month old. They also santised it before offering to carry it to our chosen table outdoors.Food was lovely, exceeded my expectations, well presented and tasty. I had fish and chips, my wife had caesar salad and my son had garlic bread starter + sausage and mash. Only criticism is that my wife asked for no anchovies, but still had them. Some drinks we didn't order were added to our bill, but they removed them without question.We also visited again. After lunch in another local pub, for drinks and desserts. On arriving the car park was full, but as we were about to leave a member off staff ran out to tell us we could park in another car park right next to them.This time we sat in the outside gezebo area. Desserts were very nice, and staff were very attentive to all the tables outside, someone was always on hand and proactive.Would definitely recommend and if we had time would have eaten here again.

The Clarence used to have great food on offer. Always well cooked and tasty, using meat from the local farm shop. After a couple of visits in June of 2021 it was clear to me something had changed, and not for the better. The gammon had seen its freshest days and was well over done, and the steak sandwich they replaced it with was no better. Such a shame, as this was a place I would regularly walk out to for tea.

Fab little walk from Dovestone Holiday park, lovely friendly welcome, very dog friendly! Had some drinks and food and they do sausage for the dogs! Hubby had burger I had the fish delish.

We came in as a family of 7 (2 adults and 5 children). We hadn’t booked a table but was able to be seated in a few minutes upon our arrival. The only reason we decided to try this pub/resto was because of the signs outside « kids eat free ». The menu looked nice and I went for a Caesar salad. Mistake! I mean the lettuce was fresh and the chicken breast was lovely but I didn’t expect to have so many anchois (which I mistaken for andives when I read the menu- my mistake!) and a cold soggy egg (not my mistake). My husband had the sausages and mash that he couldn’t finish. The children had chicken strips (which were fine)and pizza (not nice at all) and oven fries. None of us finished our food. When we received the bill, I was choked to see that the sum came up to £53 !! Innocently I thought the children were eating free. AND be aware that when you ask for water to drink, you are charged £2.50 for a glass bottle!! I explained my concerned to the manager and his response was shocking. Very unprofessional and rude to say the least. They actually overcharged us £14 on our bill -their excuses being the system in the computer. If it hadn’t been of my husband recalculating our order (on our way back home) we would have never known! Last thing, i did sent them a private message with constructive ideas to improve their menu and got blocked from their Facebook page! *sorry for my English, it’s my second language, I’m French Canadian!

can’t fault the food! Was sat down quickly which was good as hadn’t booked and was clearly busy. Only downfall was had to call on servers whenever we needed anything even though a lot of them seemed to be roaming around but not actually doing anything.

What a busy place! Atmosphere was great, lovely food. Staff couldn’t do enough for us. Hand sanitizers at each door, one way system in place we felt very safe, social distancing also very good. We will definitely be back.

Arrived for lunch on a very busy Sunday afternoon. COVID measures were all in place and we felt very safe. Staff were very professional, they new exactly what they were doing. Manager was very efficient. Food was also very good! Best place we’ve eaten for a long time. As I said the place was very busy, we didn’t book but was advised to as they were fully booked all day. We enjoyed it that much we have booked again for next week. If you haven’t tried the Clarence yet you should definitely do so. You won’t be disappointed.

No enforced guidelines for covid 19 come and go as you please if you try to follow guide lines your told to go any way you want by staff and do what you want.Then when they get your order wrong there is no customer service here i don't know where the manager has come from but he's never worked with the public before with the attitude he has but happy to take your money I would drive past and find somewhere nice to go

5 of us had a Saturday meal here just after lockdown. The vegan with us ordered the falafel burger (the only vegan option, but fair enough). When it arrived it was a falafel sandwich between two very small slices of bread, came with salad instead on the chips (as per menu) as they're not vegan. That meal was sent back. The steak another had came with mushrooms that had about 12 full garlic gloves in (no kidding). The garlic mushrooms (starter) had about the same amount. The bill came and had the vegan meal still on the bill. Additionally it had a number of drinks on that we hadn't had. The Manager got very shirty when this was pointed out and very reluctantly removed them from the bill. Won't be eating there again EVER. Also ... NO social distancing taking place or masks at all.

We have stopped twice this Bank Holiday Weekend, we came in for a coffee on Saturday and stopped for a beer, in their sunny beer garden on Monday. Place seem always busy, their food looks amazing and the atmosphere is great! It was nice to see a pub owner/manager, working hard among the staff, helping behind the bar and also chatting to everyone making you feel very welcome. They use track and trace service, you need to leave your details on arrival, hand sanitisers are also available at various locations. Great effort! Will be back for sure!

Very good food, Amazing staff. My eldest daughter felt unwell and they couldn't do enough. The food was excellent along with the service....5 🌟

Highly recommend the Clarence if you are looking for amazing food for an extremely reasonable price! The small plates and bar snacks are incredible!! 😍 No need to think about this one, get yourself down there! ✨🙌🏼

We just wanted to say thank you for such a beautiful meal, friendly and kind atmosphere with a clean, warm and safe social distancing environment. This was our first visit since The Clarence has been under new management.The seafood broth with salmon was amazing and hubby’s steak was cooked to perfection. I don’t often eat steak but had to have a try as it looked so nice and the taste was just as good as at Miller and Carter.The restaraunt was very clean, clear marking in the floor, tables were far enough apart from one and another, hand sanitising stations in all areas and I saw staff wiping down surfaces and menus frequently. Great job guys, you should be very proud

Beautiful food..had nibbles..squid for me which was flavorful..nachos was well worth the price...well presented plus the nachos were well melted with cheese n not over cremated like in some places where it dry.....really cozy and kept in line with social distancing and hand sanitizer...owner dave a pleasure really jolly chap....

First time visit to The Clarence for a birthday mealOn entry we felt overwhelmed that none of the staff wore any ppeTables were not particularly spread apart and it was very busy making us feel on edge all the timeWe were all crammed into one table which again wasn’t very covid safeMenus were obviously re usable rather than throw awayI tried the halloumi fries starter which were nice and the creamy mushroom dish was also niceSome of us had fish and chips and cheese and onion pie which was niceI had the fish finger sandwich which was rock hard and inedibleOverall it wasn’t the best and I wouldn’t be going there again

We arrived on a very busy Saturday afternoon, Hand sanitizers on the door & all tables were well spread apart, everywhere was spotless. We soon got sat down and ordered our drinks. Service was excellent. We then ordered our food, I had rag pudding chips and gravy, my friends ordered fish and chips & the classic burger which was cooked to perfection, very impressed. We have definitely missed this place over the lockdown & can’t wait to get back.Thank you.

Nice pub, quick service and in a nice location. Went to get our first Sunday lunch since lockdown, so were very excited, and hadn't tried the Clarence before.Sadly, whilst the service was quick and the food did taste nice, the portions were minuscule. 3 tiny roasties, no parsnips, one small piece of broccoli, a couple of small bits of cauliflower, a slightly burnt smallish yorkshire pudding with two fine slices of lamb. Had expected there to be carrot and Swede mash - this was a puree, and not a lot of it. Nothing else on the plate - which looked bare comparative to what we would usually have, even at home. Couldn't be arsed to complain but it was pretty obvious to the servers that we weren't impressed. Went down the road afterwards and ordered another roast between us at the Dysarte. Was £2.50 less and was a much larger meal (probably the same size portion we got on two plates at the Clarence) - thankfully this filled the gap. Shame, as it was all cooked well and tasted nice, we just left hungry. Another table we were chatting to also made the same comment to us when we left/as their roasts arrived - so not just us being awkward. Was rather disappointing and not really worth the money. Would go back for a drink but not for food. Sorry

Our first full breakfast and may I say it was absolutely delicious. Lovely and friendly staff. Clean facilities and a warm and inviting atmosphere.

I went to the Clarence last Saturday for food with family party of 6. They accommodated us all. Excellent food and all staff very friendly and helpful! Karaoke was on in the evening and was great! I cannot thankyou enough for your hospitality

Went for a walk at Dovestone reservoir this morning. On the way home we stopped for a pub lunch never been in this pud before I would definitely recommend it the food was excellent. Cheese and onion pie chips and beans was delicious. Very filling. Prices was very reasonable and the staff was very friendly. dog friendly to.

Perfect location for ramblers cyclists etc. Village pub atmosphere with local ales and good quality food. Highly recommended.

Decided to try the Clarence for the first time yesterday afternoon, it was excellent. They have a light lunch menu which is great value!! And delicious. Staff were very attentive as well which makes a massive difference. For a Thursday afternoon it was very busy ! So probably best to book.Looking forward to trying here again.
