You get what you expect and to an alright standard. My rating is given based on if you want a bit of food and drink, it will do that. Nothing special but what they do, they do it well. However, some more exciting places around. Offers cask ales, beer and cider but generally the most common options of these (Doombar, Hobgoblin, Pravha).

Over the past few years we have regularly visited the Cheshire Cat at Christleton. When we visit we always receive outstanding service especially from Sophia who always engages in friendly conversation and makes us feel welcome, she is a credit to the restaurant. This venue is always busy which is testament to the lovely atmosphere and consistently good quality of the food, the steaks are better than you can get anywhere else and always cooked exactly to order, highly recommended.

We visited on a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon. Numbering 5, (2 children) we ordered various items from the menu, all were delicious and cooked to perfection. The food and desserts were served with a smile. We did notice that there was no salad option on our menu, but maybe there was another menu that we didn't see? Toilets are upstairs (19 stairs - quite a climb) but there is a disabled toilet on the ground floor. After our mea,l we watched the canal boats and wandered the canal paths. A very pleasurable visit and we will definitely go there again.

First impressions, it looked brilliant. The location was right next to the canal and ample spaces to sit outside. Headed inside and went without booking and asked for a table in which we received and was given a menu. Looked at the mains menu but thought it was quite boring to be fair and thought it would have had a better choice. Anyway I had the Chicken & Vegetable Penang Curry at £18.95. I couldn't fault the service as it arrived pretty quick as soon as ordered at the bar. Presentation excellent, quite spicy but the grilled chicken let it down for me as it was cheap stringy processed garbage, the rice was very congealed, stodgy and crunchy but overall taste was pleasant. The inside of the pub was nice but was let down when you had to go upstairs to the gents. The walls were dirty, so could of done with either a clean or a paint job. One of the doors to the rooms were open and had a peak and they also didn't look to good neither. Don't let that put you off as I was passing through after a Skydive. It has a great location, friendly staff, food could of been better and there is certainly room for improvements to be made as it could be a very nice place.

The Cheshire Cat is perfectly placed by the Shropshire Union canal and is a pub that I like to walk to from Chester. I have been disappointed when visiting recently. The outside area needs improvement. The tables are not kept clean, the old parasols need to be replaced, the tables need to be cleared of dirty plates etc and dead plants in pots need to be removed. The building needs attention and maintenance. There are not enough staff to meet customer need and it is clearly a difficult and stressful situation behind the bar. Our waitress was helpful and friendly which was much appreciated. The food was ok but not great. The menu is tired. Hasn't changed for some time. Food is expensive and ours was overcooked. It's a shame as the Cheshire Cat could be a great experience. The experience does not meet the expectation offered by the website. Hoping for better.

My birthday ruined. My partner and I came to the Cheshire Cat for a nice meal. They have put up lots of very strong hot spotlights over the tables so I asked if we could move to another table as my fair sensitive skin burns up with these lights. The waitress said for us to find another table and she would serve us there. We found a table that was not quite as bad as most of them and sat there for ages waiting for her to take our orders. Unfortunately she had completely forgotten us. When we went to the bar we were told if we sat in those seats we have to order food over the bar. That we did, my partner ordered Sea Bass and I ordered fish cakes. After waiting for another hour we decided to leave. As we were leaving a waitress came in with a plate of gammon, egg and chips, not what I had ordered and nothing for my partner. I came home looking like a pink panda with a sore burnt face from the strong lights. They did let us off paying for a mineral water and a non alcoholic beer but we won't be visiting there again.

We booked an hour before arriving online for a party of 9 for brunch, as we were aware we were a large party we wanted to ensure there was availability. Booking was easy and confirmed within minutes. When we arrived at 10:15 as per the booking and the staff were unaware of our booking. It then took approximately 20 minutes for them to push 3 tables together and have us seated. It was then a further 20 minutes to order drinks and when they eventually arrived they were just placed on the table with no information as to what each drink was we also requested water for the table which didn’t arrive for another hour. We then had to ask to order our food which we did. What then followed was over an hour wait. When asked how long food would be we were told 10 minutes. A member of the party then went to speak to a member of the bar staff who apologised for the wait and said that a reduction on the bill would be make. Tom then came to the table and asked if everything was ok. He was told we wanted to know how long our food would be. Tom was extremely rude and unprofessional, refusing to acknowledge that at almost 2 hours since arrival and still not receiving our food order was unacceptable and no reduction on the bill would be made. He stated that a table of 9 would take longer, which we agree with but not almost 2 hours long. He also said that the food area was very busy, at this point we were the only people inside the pub and there were approximately 5 people in the outside area. Following Toms rude and unprofessional conduct he then went to the bar area and began to talk about us with the bar staff in a negative way. At this point we left. It was a completely disappointing end to a fantastic weekend we had in Chester. This was personally my first experience at a vintage inn and it does not make me want to rush to return to one due to the staff attitude and unprofessional

The restaurant attached to the hotel we are staying in is undergoing renovation and the staff recommended the Cheshire Cat. A beautiful walk of around a mile along the canal helped further work up our thirst and hunger. The food was absolutely fantastic - my son had the Mac and Cheese, and I had the Smoked Haddock Fishcakes. Both beautifully prepared and delicious. For desert we had the brownie and sticky toffee pudding which were very more-ish. A very good drinks selection, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, was available too. I was served by brilliant, friendly and helpful staff. We would absolutely stay here (rather than the hotel we are currently at) if we are ever in Chester in the future. I very much recommend a visit to the Cheshire Cat 😺...it certainly left us with a grin on our faces!

This place has hugely improved enormously from a few years ago Creative options on the menu (beetroot and seed arancini), or classics cooked very well. Tiny criticism, some of the food tasted very nice because it was sweet. Eg sweet barbecue sauce on the pulled beef. I think this is cheating a bit. 30/09/24: Popped in for breakfast with friends and the obligatory mooch around J&S. Full English breakfast and a mug of tea is value for money and can set you up for the day. The decor is nothing special, but as it's predominantly a bikers' café that's not what it's about. The tables are big enough and spaced out well enough to be comfortable with biker clobber on, but it can get a bit noisy when it's busy and, as it's popular, it does get busy, especially in biking season. There are some back issues of bike-related mags if you fancy a read during your visit, and there is some outside seating for when the sun puts in an appearance, but this is a bit tired and could use a refresh. Service is generally dependable, but can be variable and depends on who is on shift. We've always got what we ordered, but some of the staff have in the past been miserable or surly, which takes the edge off a generally good experience.
