Had a lovely meal at Charlton Inn, every time we come here, we are greeted with a friendly welcome. The menu is extensive on the choice, we chose off the specialist menu and decided to with Haddock mornay, and I had Steak with Guinness pie, which both came with chunky chips and a side of vegetables, both were excellent, and very reasonable value, the whole lot with 1.2/2 pints came to under £36.00, great service and a great pub

Writing for my parents . A dreadful experience with a group of friends. The food was pre ordered. My father didn’t get his meal, as ordered, he had to eat what he was given, as that was what was left. Others had cold veg, over cooked , inedible duck .. another gent didn’t get his meal so he had to wait 10 minutes whilst they cooked for him. All this could have been easy remedied with a member of staff apologising and caring about the whole situation. Customer service costs nothing. The general consensus between this large group of friends is that they won’t return.

The menu here is vast. You expect the food therefore to be .... not so good. Wrong - it is lovely. Proper English Pub, serving good food, nice atmosphere and correctly served beer. The serving staff are young and again therefore maybe not so good. Wrong again. They are professional, engaging and good at what they do. Price is reasonable as well. Sugegst a stop off here.

Booked for lunch, great Sunday roast again but had a couple of big groups in which is fine but staff seemed to pay more attention to the large groups rather than all guests. We go often as local but didn’t once get spoken to once after meal served and after waiting for over 30 minutes from finishing meal still no waiting staff to clear away dishes or offer dessert menu despite the waiting staff checking on the big group of diners so got up and paid and left. More attention needs to be paid to all customers however small the group.

We were recommended by a friend, so decided to try it. Haven’t had such a wide ranging menu choice at a pub before, from smaller menu options at just £7.50 to restaurant quality meals at around £15. We both ate off the daily specials menu with a choice of potatoes and a good selection of vegetables, most definitely not chips with everything. I had wild boar faggots and my husband had half a duck with Cointreau sauce. Both were beautifully cooked and presented. The welcome and service were both excellent and we will most certainly eat there again even though we are about 20 miles from there. Well done.

My husband had the homemade gamekeepers pie (a venison mince pie topped with mash) served with chips and fresh vegetables. I had the macaroni cheese with salad. We stopped off for lunch as was on the main road on the way to our destination and we hadn't prebooked.I really want to be more positive because nothing was BAD but more MEH. There was no lunchtime menu although the menu was quite large but filled with mainly main meals.I had halloumi fries starter. I got 3 sticks for £6.25 with a little side salad- I wouldn't class this as value for money especially as it wasn't even homemade.Baby G had the ham and cheese baguette with lovely chunks of thick ham. At £6.95 again I wouldn't call this value for money.Mr G had a bacon, sausage and egg bap with chips for £4.95, definitely good value. It was quite slow to come. I had draught coke zero and it didn't taste right admittedly I didn't complain because I was so thirsty I practically downed it in one.The atmosphere was funerary. It is obviously a place for locals as the staff seemed to know the names of the others in attendance. Not bad but not special and it wouldn't encourage me to recommend or revisit.

Visited with a few friends over the weekend and it was diabolical! Rude staff, lack of organisation, not a great first time back here since lockdown lifted. We went back last night thinking maybe it was due to the busy weekend...Tables over 6 people being seated, no real track and trace in place! Taking one name for a whole table! Where's the one way system? No one controlling who comes in and out.Only 1 member of staff had a mask on which I know isn't compulsory but after witnessing some of the behaviours it was was reassuring that someone was being considerate and would have preferred to been served by her all night. Only saw 2 out of the 3 staff wiping down tables, chairs, menus and washing their hands frequently. To be honest that's the only improvement since the weekend!!!!!Menus are reused, I witnessed a young server taking menus from one table straight to another! Although she did appear to be in her own little world so wherever she was that is probably acceptable. One of the guests was coughing and spluttering everywhere! Great!! Saw that the person appeared to being staying so let's hope their cleaning of rooms is better than that of the pub.

The meat ( generous portions ) was delivered by an other person but then we had to wait for over 5 mins for the veg to arrive , hence luke warm meat & gravy by then . The roast potatoes were hard & greasy where as on the previous visit they were perfection . We think they had been reheated in a frying pan.. We stayed here on a b&b basis. The room was well appointed, very clean and quiet. Breakfasts were memorable and well worth the £10 per head. We had dinner on the first evening, after good starters my wife had a vegetable tagine and I tried the steak and kidney pie. Both were excellent. The next night we had a family gathering and unfortunately the three venison steaks which were ordered were found to be tough and not really edible. After some delay they were taken away, leaving the other food on the plate to be replaced about 10 minutes later by gammon steaks which came on a separate plate.. After rigorous complaining we managed to get one steak removed from the bill but this aspect of customer service was very poor. The other diners did enjoy their meals. The inn has a good range of beers and ciders and, apart from the venison episode, a great atmosphere. We hope the venison affair was a one off and we will certainly stay and eat there again.

The car park was reasonably full, which we thought was a good sign. Inside there were several tables occupied with people dining and we were greeted by friendly bar staff. The vast menu was a bit worrying - plenty of choice, but how can such a local pub offer so much choice of freshly cooked food?! This Pub really is the best kept secret in Dorset. A place which still has the local feel about it and yet is super friendly to every guest. The food is exquisite. We had a venison and ham dish, which was melt in the mouth, followed by apple crumble and custard. YES, a pub desert menu which doesn’t solely comprise the usual cold 'sweets' but has real old fashioned 'deserts'. Before ordering the crumble I had the cheek to ask if the apples were bramleys and the chef, who was in the bar having a break, replied "of course they’re bramleys, and you don’t get nothin' in 'ere out of a tin dear".

Really quite upset after our recent experience. Came for the quiz with some friends of ours as we were visiting my parents who live in the area. Unfortunately within minutes of sitting down we overheard the barman and two customers talking about us, asking if we had actually bought drinks (we had) and staring at us and whispering. Our two friends are gay and it made them feel extremely uncomfortable as we didn’t understand why they were speaking about us. We were paying customers and love to visit local pubs when in the area but that experience was extremely upsetting. I’ve never experienced anything like it. You’d think local pubs would welcome new customers but apparently not.

Nothing special. Basic menu which would be difficult to get wrong. Waitress was very pleasant, chap behind the bar was too. Two scampi and chips and a child’s fish and chips. Was ok.

The food we had was cold and horrible, there were multiple kids at the work place running round as if they were at wacky warehouse, that was their staff, the nights stay was a joke, I smelt the stinky smokers sputtering ourside, the bed had spiders webs in the bathroom had no drainage in place and was told to mop up the floor as that was our complimentary gift for the weekend, ridiculous also we were given a free meal voucher if u had a 3 course meal so it wasn't free, I had a carvery which the meat looked like it had been there for weeks and the chef looked like he was on coke, the dopey barman swore at me many times and muttered, when asked him about the steak pie he got his FINGER AND PUT IT IN THE pie to check it and said it was fine, stupid, say nothing else but that sums our stay however the free newspapers weren't too bad. Will not be returning to this shoddy knackered building with kids working on 2 p an hour, sort it our kids

We come to the Charlton Inn at least twice a year with our group of older people. I have to say, there have never been any complaints (and that is a good as the group can be very picky at times) and everyone always looks forward to going there. Great service and lovely food

We came as a couples one night stay had to wait for what felt like a years wait to be givn the keys to are room to find out it was the wrong rom number which was unaceptable then we went to have Sunday roast the bar manger came to our table with our food and mumbld some words about wacka or quacka and kept repeting them when we asked aboot the foud, we then had the wrong food there was a chef a boy a girll and the bar manger, we saw the boy cooking food in the kitchen when he clearly hadn't done his cucking course yet,my hubbie went to the bar to order the food after waiting 25mins to be served it was inaceptable visit however when the food came it was lovely however we had to wait around another 35-40 mintes for the food to come. All in all disgusted with the service the bar manger (Alan) and will not be reurning. The hotel rom was miles too expensive for the price we paid. INADEQUATE. This place was really nice howeather its gotting worse last visit was around 6months ago and everything was brilliant however I really feel its gone down hill sadnesssly. Thanks for your **** hospitality...

This place has gone downhill a lot. The service was terrible, waited over an hour for food, no apologies given and when served nobody came to ask if all was ok. Waitress sat at bar on her phone, the man behind the bar just grunted at us and more interested in people at the bar than in restaurant. Will not be visiting again which is a shame as previous visits were good.

We called in on the way past, we're bowled over by the specials board, the breadth of the menu is impressive.

We visited as a group of 6 for my husband's birthday. Thoroughly disappointed, the food was adequate but the service was terrible. They failed to offer any sauces or check if we needed anything and didn't clear our plates. We were going to order pudding but gave up waiting and left. There are much nicer places to eat locally. One staff member was particularly rude and sullen. Definitely in need of new staff!!

I took a party of eighteen people to the The Charlton for an evening meal. The food and service were excellent. We had the exclusive use of a room, and considering the variety of food and that was ordered they coped very well - fresh vegitables and lovely puds. No hesitation in retuning with a large party.

We eat here often and the food and service is always good. My favourite is the hunters chicken although the burgers are excellent.

The Charlton is my local and as such I have previously reviewed before. The pub changed hands in June last year and the new landlord and landlady threw a lovely welcome party, superb buffet and drinks included. They soon set about refurbishing the main dining area with a lovely new carpet and new furniture. On Monday last week eight of us gathered for a celebratory birthday lunch which was superb, all meals were served spot on time and were enjoyed by all.

Visited as a party of 8. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was really nice with steaks cooked just right. A large selection of food is available and at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended to visit.

I used to like going to the Charlton we went regularly and when it changed hands we thought we would try it out one lunchtime, there seemed to be a what looked like a family running it the man just sat at the bar picking his nose giving orders to a woman and a young girl who didn’t seem to know what they were doing , still we ordered food expecting the usual fresh good pub grub but instead got what looked like frozen battered fish frozen chips and frozen peas all of which I could of got from Iceland’s very disappointing , I said then I probably wouldn’t go back but we believe in second chances so we thought we would try one Sunday lunchtime , well I can’t tell you how shocked and angry we were when we walked into the pub before we even sat down we were told “don’t bother staying because we have no food left “ it was only half past one , I can’t believe a pub could run out of food on one of the most popular days for people to go out to eat, we didn’t even get offered a drink or a sandwich or anything to get us to stay, unbelievably bad service , we will not be going back there again.

We stopped here for a light lunch whilst travelling for a weekend away. We did not intend to go along this road, but a diversion due to road closure took us to this pub. A very welcome break in the journey, baguettes very tasty and filling. chips excellent - best I have tasted for ages in a pub.

Pass this pub on a regular basis and been in once or twice before but not for sometime. Bit disappointed this time, in particular tables were sticky and obviously not been cleaned properly. However, food was good but I thought a bit expensive - it is a pub in a small village on a main road I suppose - Burger, chips and salad £9.95, med glass of wine £5 ish.

Decided to try this as it’s under new ownership and within walking distance. I booked ahead for Sunday lunch at 1pm thinking it may be busy but the main bar was was completely empty. The staff greeted us warmly and were offered drinks which we decided to have at the table in the the restaurant away from the loud music. Obviously the staff were playing what they wanted rather than something suitable for the clientele. The restaurant only had one other couple dining, it was completely empty apart from us. The waitresses were very young, sweet and polite. After a considerable wait we were served our food. What a disappointment! The lamb wellington consisted of 3 slices of lamb with a thin layer of pastry around the outside, my Mothers 3 slices of pork looked nice and I have 2 slices of overcooked roast beef. The vegetables looked ok but were barely warm and and roast potatoes were yesterday’s and had chewy skins. Very disappointing which we pointed out to the waitress when she asked how our meal was when she cleared the table. I could hear the same comments from the other couple when they were asked the same question. We decided that we’d go home for our pudding rather than chance a repeat reheat of yesterday’s. Such a shame, we weren’t offered any explanation, but one only had to look around to see why the place was empty. My husband who doesn’t cook could have produced a better meal. It cost us £56 in total. We shan’t be returning and I don’t suppose the other diners will either. I took the meat home and there were no complaints from the dogs!

Been here a few times to eat and been a very mixed experience with food quality. Yesterday we have Sunday roast from carvery and it was disappointing. Food tasked like it had been reheated particularly roast potatoes and meat. I think it depends who’s cooking as I noticed normal chef not present. Don’t think I’ll be bothering again as I can do better at home! Lovely pub and people welcoming, it’s a shame.
