Carvery is excellent, but the girls in the restaurant can do with some training, they do not know how to welcome people, and just pointed us to our table instead of taking us there, and when we left they just ignored us. The bar service is very slow, a second person is required behind the bar when busy.

Sticky, dirty and smelly place. It’s off putting the minute you walk through the squalid bar. We were so hungry so ordered thinking the food would be good. Omgoodness it was, without doubt THE WORST meal we have ever been served anywhere and we eat out most nights due to our busy lifestyle. If Wetherspoons is a 4/10 this place is a -1/10 !!

We were convinced by locals to revisit this pub as it has apparently changed management and improved. (We were delighted by this news and popped along on Thursday for their steak night). From our very recent experience it is still sadly sub-standard and awful food. Very disappointing. The ribs tasted off, the chicken must be washed in bleach as it’s very chemically, chips are not nice at all, my son had a tough as old boots mixed grill with no chips as advertised on menu (didn’t matter they are not worth bothering with so didn’t complain) husband said the chilli was ok if a little bland - but just about edible apart from the rice. Their coleslaw is homemade style and very nice indeed. Drinks glasses were dirty (lipstick and tiny black marks). Table was super sticky and cutlery not exactly spotless. The bar was loud and busy, it’s a (working man’s) drinkers pub - clearly, we love dogs but almost tripped over a canine gathering whilst trying to navigate to the back restaurant. It’s very cheap and service was “microwave quick” so on that basis it should serve many well.

We booked for a family lunch and we’re not disappointed. Adults and 2 under 3 year old catered for. The staff were all welcoming, friendly and helpful. We opted for the large carvery and got so much for our money. Massive thick slices of well cooked meat-great choice of meats. Vegetables were perfect-roast potatoes, roast parsnips, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, pork crackling, Yorkshire pud, stuffing balls, gravy and condiments. Amazing choice and and amazing lunch. No room left for pudding unfortunately. Children were welcomed and high chairs available. Definitely a place to go again but make sure you book just in case it’s busy. Plenty of parking behind the pub and there is even a campsite-that may be a good one in the summer with the grandchildren. Thank you Castlebrook Inn. We will be back and we will recommend.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience at what seems to be a popular pub. We booked for a carvery, but it was served cold. I assume the appliances were turned down low after the big rush. Not even the plates were warm. We mentioned this and got an apology. Then we had limited pudding choice as they’d ran out of most items. We then had trouble paying as the till roll ran out and they could no longer accept cards, so had to fumble for cash. Not the best experience, and not one we would be likely risk repeating, which is a shame as we drive past this place weekly.

Wow!!! What can I say...what an absolute gem of a pub. Visited 3 times whilst staying in a lovely little shepherds hut in Compton Dundon. Amazing menu, beautifully cooked food and I can honestly say we have never felt so welcome in a pub ever. We prebooked as there was a lot of us, we got there a bit early and I'm not kidding, it was like walking into a homeless people's soup kitchen. Our table was ready, we all just stood there in silence and stared, they put sheets on the tables which were sooo creased, we were quite far from the carvery, none of my party wanted to stay, we complained and they did eventually agree to move us. Right next to the carvery, which looked like it had seen better days. Dried overcooked meat, the condiments were in bowls just chucked on a very dirty window ledge, everywhere you looked and touched was sticky and unclean. Please DO NOT GO! We got up and walked out.

It wasn't a great lunch. I had 3 sausages with onion gravy and Cheddar mash. I was expecting big fat sausages, but 3 skinny sausages arrived instead, they hadn't been browned first and looked anemic. So from a visual point of view it wasn't a great sight and they didn't taste of anything, they were very bland. I love potatoes, but the Cheddar mash was lumpy and it must be pretty bad for me to leave potatoes on the plate. We were the only diners so there was no atmosphere to speak of. Very disappointing and expensive! Although the staff were very friendly and accommodating for the vegans in our party, I ordered first and my meal was forgotten which was very inconvenient because I was sharing with my 1 year old who was not happy about watching everyone else eat. On my plate was 1 slice of meat, 3 small roasties and veg selection not really enough in my opinion for £11. In addition we were made to wait again to pay for quite a long time and for 2 dinners (£22) a pint and a j20 it came to just under £31 so all in all a very lengthy and unsatisfying lunch.

As the only pub in the village of Compton Durdon we thought it would be popular and full of character. We were disappointed. We visited on a Saturday night and were the only couple eating. There was only one couple in the bar drinking too. The atmosphere was flat. No music in the background, and the bar chairs we sat on were filthy. We should have taken the sign outside saying ‘chef required’ as a warning. There was no menu to order from as we had seen in our accommodation - but a choice of just half a dozen options on a blackboard. The food was ok - all options with chips. The food was cooked by the owners. Clearly the locals already new what to expect and were voting with their feet by staying away.

We decided to pop into The Castlebrook for a bite to eat, en-route to visit my Mother. A large group had arrived ahead of us, so we were informed any food order would have a delay and would be about half an hour. As I wasn’t feeling very hungry we decided to share a portion of scampi and chips. The food took an hour to arrive, which wasn’t too much of a problem. But I was totally underwhelmed with the portion of scampi, 7 small pieces, the chips were of a basic quality. This would have been ok if the cost had been around the £6 mark, but at £9.95 we both felt, this was poor value for money. The pub itself had lots of character and the surroundings were good.

We've had several meals here in recent months. Local to the area we find this little gem has good food options (especially for a little country pub) and the landlords do their best accommodate any special requests. Hosts Becky and Simon are warm hearted and welcoming with GSOH. Plates are piled high with freshly cooked to order food which has to date always been faultless. The building itself is low ceilinged, cosy and charming. Well behaved dogs are welcomed. There is a large field at the rear of the property with stunning views and a small pub garden with tables and benches at the front. Ample parking. Great to visit in the warmer months but equally when colder too when the wood burner is roaring away in the very cosy bar. Well done Becky and Simon, we love it/you and will continue to frequent this favourite little charmer.

At the moment the food choice is a little limited but it is hoped a new chef will join the couple soon. The food we did have was very good but maybe the portions were a little small. I hope the couple are successful and we will return when they have settled in, but maybe not until then.

Lovely service from the new management. Food was good and nice surroundings. It would have got a very good but I'm a big fan of a home made pudding I have a feeling it was not homemade. Would go here again.

This is our new favourite place to go for family dinner, we absolutely love it here. We have two young kids and finding somewhere really family friendly is a god send.

I must say after living in Somerset most of my life, and then moved to Dorset. I was so looking forward to a family reunion in Somerset and especially Compton as where was most of my family came from.

Came up early for a friend's wedding so looked for some where to eat passed this place looking for a dog walk. Dropped in for dinner on the way back. Looked nice the food was good to start off with then the long wait started. After some time I asked at the bar for the sweet menu which came on a blackboard. We ordered and the wait started again! After a long time the bar maid apologised for the wait and that it was being done. It took that long that we were about too give up just as the sweets appeared with an apology that they had had a big table out the back. It would of been nice to of had this bit of information before placing the order. They did not charge us for one sweet. Sorry but will not call again.

The other evening my wife and I visited the Castlebrook for a meal. Two other couples were already seated and had ordered and were waiting for their meal. While we were eating ours we noted the other people were complaining that there was a problem with their food. Interestingly, they had finished it so there was nothing to show what the alleged problem was. I was interested in how the owners were going to manage it.

Excellent pleasant service, nothing too much trouble, very welcoming atmosphere. They were very busy but everything fell into place nicely without any stress. The meals were superbly cooked and presented and absolutely delicious. Prices are very sensibly priced. The small meal prices are unbelievable value for the money especially for say older people or those with a smaller appetite. The bar is a buzz with local friendly sociable characters. All the staff very helpful and obliging.

A great place to stop for coffee, lunch, or tea which rightly seems very popular with the locals. We enjoyed lots of tea and cake after a walk up Herne Hill (recommended) and my OH particularly enjoyed a Manhattan cake which was all chocolate mousse and orange. Great, friendly service as well.

Fantastic night for dinner, we always struggle taking our child out for dinner but we felt such at ease. We were greeted with friendliness, served fast for our drinks and told to choose a table! Food was delivered fast, hot and delicious! Lots of parking space, my son was given colours and colouring paper which kept him happy. We booked in for the Christmas breakfast with Santa and can’t wait 😍

Had been looking forward to visiting here for a while but was left disappointed. Unfortunately they dont seem to be well adverse with alligies. After informing them of an alligie within our party it's seemed that panic struck and we were told they couldn't guarantee that the food was suitable as the kitchen had various things made in it. We left hungry and disappointed

My wife and I stayed for 2 night, expecting evening meals and breakfast as we were visiting Wells and Bath and Yeovil . I think it was a lovely pub at one time but not now. It did no food closed most nights , we visited other pubs for our meals very disappointing stay and would not recommend anyone to stay I think it will possibly close down very shortly.
