The Carron Fish Bar in Aberdeenshire

After trying one on my last trip to Stonehaven, I finally enjoyed my first whole Deep Fried Mars Bar, and didn't have to share it. It was delicious and worth every penny. I would highly recommend it and in the home of the Deep Fried Mars Bar, where better to have one. If I ever go back to Stonehaven this will be my first stop.

The shop was really busy when we came but placed the order and given a number then told to wait outside, never waited long (10 mins) and the fish & chips were amazing. Best fish I’ve tasted in a long time the batter was perfect and the portions were huge. Will definitely be back and would recommend.

Absolutely delicious fish and chips - freshly cooked to order and huge portions. Easily the best fish and chips we’ve had in a long time. Really fresh, flaky haddock and delicious chips. Well organised set up as the shop was busy. Highly recommend a visit if in Stonehaven.

First time in years. Ordered 2 fish suppers, paid, then told to stand outside. Asked for salt and vinegar but hardly any was applied. Suppers far too oily, especially chips.

Finally enjoyed my 1st deep fried mars bar, after about 40yrs of visiting Scotland and never finding anywhere to have one. Very tasty and moreish. Would highly recommend a visit, I know I will certainly be back for another mars bar. Thank you, and what a place to have my 1st one at the home of the deep fried mars bar.

Fab chippy and cheaper than our home one. Good choice on menu and ordering system good. Loved the tartar sauce. Will go back

What I liked was everything was made to order. The fish was cooked perfectly with not too much batter. They have the ordering process off to a tee also.

Fish was lovely, chips not great. Also not great was watching girl who seemed to be oldest server slagging off ex girl staff member goaded on with guy in back of the place, talking about ex member was being unemployable and how she had mental issues, Jesus christ almighty breach off confidentiality abound, and it was savage and prayed no member of ex staff member was present in shop waiting to be served, girl should be fired and the spot as well as male member who disclosed reasons she would never get a job again. Disgusting and savage and owners need to have staff sign confidentiality agreements and also tell them to never discuss ex members again

The Carron Fish Bar was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. We order Fish and Chips and Scampi and Chip, plus we shared the Deep Fried Mars Bar, all the food was excellent and cooked fresh. The have great friendly staff as well.

Having visited Stonehaven before and enjoyed the food here, we were looking forward to our dinner I’m not sure if it’s under new management or standards have just slipped but it wasn’t a great experience The batter on the fish and white pudding was very brittle and where you would expect the two to be connected , once you started eating , the batter was far too brittle and not attached to the food it was coating It was very disappointing and we left a lot of it They also got our order wrong , which was slightly annoying but no where near as bad as the eating experience

Best place to go in Stonehaven for fish and chips and friendly service. Lorraine and her staff went extra mile for me and my husband.

We were several times last year and we though it was excellent, went back again tonight and the standards have slipped badly, The fish was so little and the chips were greasy not what we had hoped for.

Had a jumbo haddock supper, box swimming in grease fish soggy cold and inedible. We have had chips before and they were fine but everything was oily and greasy. I emailed to complain, no reply, won't be back

Passing through Stonehaven and we felt a little peckish…..so decided to share a portion of chips! They were delish. Probably the best we have had in years. Yum…….we will be back soon purely to come for a chippy tea.

Heard about this fish and chip shop through friends ,so it was a must while visiting Stonehaven .We we’re not disappointed as we are pensioners we got half portion £6 each , the two ladies serving were lovely and friendly with their chat as we waited for our fresh chippie

Had their haddock & chips twice in the week we were in the area. Consistent in quality. Service was excellent. Shop does get busy during meal times, causing a bit of a wait, but you can call in your order ahead of time.

Found this from TripAdvisor search, haddock was cooked lovely and the batter was crispy and light, chips were good but portion seemed small on the chips, lastly the mushy peas were nice and the curry sauce was very good.

The most important thing was the standard haddock supper was absolutely delicious… definitely one of the best I have ever tasted. The chipper is just opposite the beach and boardwalk so we took our food over there to eat. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or living in Stonehaven if you want a good fish supper.

I normally order from another local chip shop who have always served me well, but was persuaded to give The Carron chip shop a try due to their claim to be the number 1 in Scotland. I Ordered for my family from children to grandparents using the online ordering service as advised on the website for collection, in line with their COVID-19 measures. Had to wait an hour for my collection slot. Then attended during my allotted slot to find a large number of people hanging around the door, with no social distancing present. Many present had visited to order at the the shop creating a queue for those wanting to collect on line and telephone orders and making it pointless waiting over an hour for a slot to collect just to stand in a queue with a big group of people many of who had just visited as before the virus. Food was okay, but of no higher a standard than other similar premises in the area and I got home to find they had made an error with my order giving me two portions of curry sauce (which nobody in my family likes) rather than the mushy peas, I had ordered. Their are better fish and chip shops in Stonehaven.

Great fish and chips and scampi n chips. Batter not overdone and tasty fish. We got the small and it was a good size to allow room for dessert, although we didn’t have the deep fried Mars Bar! Queuing outside on the pavement was disorganised.

Since lockdown we have been missing this chipper so much...got delivery tonight and it was AMAZING, the food was delicious, arrived piping hot and on time! Highly recommend these guys whether in lockdown or not. One happy family tonight! Thankyou Everyone At The Carron!

We had heard a lot about this place and especially after all the publicity on being selected as one of the top 10 fish bars in the country, we had to try it out.We visited on a weeknight, so was not busy at all, had to wait for about 15 minutes or so. The fish was well cooked with a crisp batter, not very greasy like it is in many places. But I wouldn't call it the best I've eaten. The fish was very fresh and a good size for a standard haddock. Was a bit disappointed with the chips though. Even though they were fried just before serving, they didn't seem as crisp. The staff were friendly and efficient, guess they have to be in such a highly publicised shop in the north east of Scotland.

It was my firm favourite for a long time. Recently I have had a few dodgy fish suppers; soggy batter etc.

We only had chips but they were dry, crisp and lovely. Actually went to the fireballs on Hogmany. The amount of people they must have served that night. To keep up that standard is brilliant. Will certainly go back again. The place was heaving all night. Well done to all staff.

WE decided to try the Carron since they have had an award for their fish & chips.Worst decision ever, the fish was poor quality & the chips were not crisp. The Bay chip shop is by far the better quality place to go

I read that the Carron had won an award so decided to try it when I was in the area. I had haddock and chips and it was very good quality. Crispy and with no grease. An easy 5 stars.

I frequent the Carron frequently and the service I receive is phenomenal. Food is always fresh and prepared and presented to a high standard. The staff at the Carron are also very supportive off the emergency services which is a god send at times. Can't recommend this place highly enough! All members off staff I have met have gone above and beyond to provide the best customer service I have rarely seen anywhere else.

Stopped by to pick up chipper suppers before heading to the Stonehaven harbour to eat itI got a macaroni pie with chips Partner got the chicken fillets and chips , bottle of juice and tomato ketchup and off we goWe drive on to the beautiful harbour and park upIt’s a sunny evening 17 deg so we opt to sit on a bench with sun beating on us The pie is just lovely , chips are the best Partner loves his 6 fillets The views are amazing too , young kids jumping into the harbour people out paddle boating Pick yourself up a chipper from the carron and head along to the harbour Lovely evening spent We prefer the carron to the bay chipper No huge queues , you get more for your money and very tasty

Busy fish bar at peak time. Although a young team, the staff appeared well organised and efficient. Order taken quickly and order number allocated. Food seen being cooked to order. Nice and fresh chips. Orders come out quickly and you leave with a piping hot supper! Shop was very clean and staff smartly turned out.

So good that our grandson insisted that we went back to try the amazing deep fried Mars Bar. I passed the fish bar on our first visit as the queue was incredible. However, we now know why! You certainly need a sweet tooth to enjoy the Mars bar, but for me it ticked the boxes. It would be foolish to be in Stonehaven and not sample the unique taste of the very first deep fried Mars Bar in history. 500 people queuing in the street couldn't all be wrong! This is a must if you are in Stonehaven.

My wife and I ordered the catch of the day, cod and chips and I must say that even though I live on North Shields, a major fishing place, the meal was amazing. Crispy white cod and chunky chips on a sunny day. Nowt better.

went In for a fish supper last Thursday the first of August. I knew when i saw the queue I was making a good decision, and my goodness I was not wrong. I ordered 3 fish suppers one for myself and one each for my 2 workmates. This was the first time I had been in this fish bar as I was up from Kilmarnock working in the area. The battered fish was absolutely brilliant the batter nice and crisp and the fish melted in the mouth the chips nice and crisp and fluffy on the inside. This was the standard fish suppers which were plentiful and at £21 for 3 was value for money. All in all it is the best fish supper I have had for many a year and I have been all over the country I will definitely be back in when I am back up this way in a couple of weeks. I would like also to say the staff are very friendly and polite.

My wife and I popped into Stonehaven for Fish & Chips when travelling south and found the Carron.

Fish shops in Stonehaven are busy and this shop offers a reliable telephone order system where you are given the cost and collection time. Good menu. Parking directly outside is “pot luck” but ample not too far away. Found the staff fast but friendly and tidy. You can see the food being cooked to order in clean kitchen area. Plenty pubs nearby to wash your food down in the area.

Once again, we visited the Carron Fish Bar, on a gloriously sunny day. They were busy, as always, and everything was cooked to order, so worth waiting 10 minutes. When our server was wrapping our fish, we were offered the usual salt and vinegar, but also a wedge of lemon, not common for a take away, but very welcome. The batter was crispy, golden, light and the fish was cooked to perfection, flaky, and fresh. The chips were made from Spanish potatoes, we were advised, and they were also just right. The meal was piping hot, and we sat at the picturesque harbour, enjoying our meal and watching the fun being had on the beach. Perfect take away on a perfect day, in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended.

I have eaten fish suppers over the length and breadth of the UK. The Carron’s Jumbo Haddock Supper is without question the best I have tasted - ever. My wife went for a standard breaded haddock - both fish were perfectly cooked and so succulent! I couldn’t praise The Carron highly enough. Pleasant staff and I also witnessed “no quibble” pensioners’ portions being sold.

A busy wee shop when we were there. Different meals on the menu, they also do Pensioners portions. The fish i had was Breaded Haddock my wife just had the small Haddock. Enjoyed it very much. No seating as it's basically a chip shop.Next time I'm in Stonehaven will go there again.

Popped in here to grab fish and chips, it was a Easter Sunday around 4pm. I was totally surprised that in the heater there was no food on display that had been cooked. It was very warm in the shop so having to wait 15 minutes for the food was a little poor. As I stood there with my order placed an already 5 minutes a chap came in after me and ordered the same as me and actually received his food before me which understandably I was a little disappointed with but he may have been a regular but never the less not great. The food was placed in cartons and I took my food away once I had received them. I ordered fish and chips twice and didn’t receive much change back from £20 so I thought this must be good. When we opened the boxes I was a little underwhelmed with the small fish and dry chips, the fish was over cooked with not much juice in it at all and the chips were dry and tasteless. I was really disappointed to be honest as I had looked forward to these all weekend. The service was good and the place really clean but as I’ve pointed out the wait wasn’t worth what we were served.

The best fish and chips in Stonehaven and right up there with best I've had ever! The haddock covered in lovely golden, crispy but then soft batter. The deep fried Mars bar delicious even if it made me fatter. Would definitely recommend as just off the front where there are massive queues for other places but this is purely due to location not quality.

Went into the Carron fish bar for our supper and have never had a bad previous experience. Until today. I asked for what I thought was a fairly simple order and asked a simple question to which the dark haired girl working there was very blunt and didn’t really have much of a clue to be honest. After a LOT of confusion, I was then overcharged. I pointed this out with absolutely no apology from any of the staff. Surely they are supposed to take responsibility for this and apologise to their customers?

Loved our fish and chips from here but my hamburger was just average. The chips were fab though and plenty of them. Takeaway only, there is nowhere to sit and eat. But it was very busy and that’s always a good sign!

Dissatisfied much! Large portion of chips apparently serves 4-5 people! Yeh if you want 5 chips each. Sorry being a local I especially found this less than satisfactory! Not setting a good example for tourism. Expect much better standards!

We both had the red pudding suppers. Over cooked red pudding, rather under cooked chips and both well under seasoned. Get rid of the silly spray bottle for the vinegar and put a decent amount on the chips

Occasionally go here for my Friday fish and chip supper it's always delicious, best chipper in my opinion.
