The Ashvale in Aberdeenshire

We stopped by on a whim, seated immediately, friendly service, food was delicious and we were all stuffed when we finished. The restaurant is a bit dated but we visited the facilities and they were spotless.

Third time at this poorly run place in six years Hasent changed one bit Horrible dry fish and chips must have been a year old Staff as per other two visits not interested Older guy frying needs training and servers also Will never be back Ashvale used to have an a 1 reputation when they were smqller company but as usual have let standards go and quality of produce well below stanndard All about cheap produce and cheap staff

Blonde girl that works there is a bad woker. Couldn’t have worse customer service. Food was late. Ew

great fish and chips from lunch menu,mushrooms were good too,pity tins of juice were 2.40 each,but friendly staff,were stuffed after it.

We bought two fish suppers from this shop at Portlethen ,,, one of them had gone off and the fish had too be thrown into the bin... just vile! , It is desperately sad that the great name of Ashvale chipper has been brought down to this level ...HORRIFIED !

Having always had bad takeaway experience I decided to sit in and I must say we both had fish and it was fantastic service was barebones but ok much better than previous visits though

Been going for years today I took my mum for lunch as she has not been well she asked for poached yellow haddock 2 mins before our food came put the waitress tells us that she has battered the yellow fish be a while before I go back !!

We had two standard haddock suppers which I had to wait jusa about 1 minute for after placing phone order! Portion size just right, flaky fish - ratio batter to fish, perfect! - soft, flavoursome fish that wasn't too salty, like some chippers are. Delicious chips! Thank you!

Let me tell you a bit about the weight watchers special, priced at £6.60 and based on my experience of my visit..... Firstly, they get a dust pan and brush and sweep all the old chips from under the counter and gently reheat them several times and then serve 13 of them as a full portion. They are the first chips I have found chewier than a packet of wrigleys. Next is the fish cake which I had to wait for as 'was being cooked fresh'. Really couldn't understand why it had managed to go cold in the 93 seconds it took me to walk to my car. Finally, there is the buttered roll at a princely 50p. The technique for these is to butter them up and wrap in cling film for a few weeks until every last bit of moisture has been sucked out. The result is a bone dry crumbly piece of out of date dough which even the seagulls would walk away from. It is served in a shoe box type carton and quite honestly, a pair of old boots would have tasted better Have you got the concept yet of how you can lose weight with this supper? Basically the whole lot was an absolute inedible disgrace which went in the bin and spared my waistline. If it hadn't been for the fact that the server lady with dark hair was very pleasant, I would have walked back in and thrown the lot back at the excuse of a chef.

Sad to see what was once an excellent take away reduced to this level. I preordered a meal at 5:45 and told it would be ready in 10 mins. Arrived at 5:55 and paid and was told to wait which I did for 15 mins before being told that no one from the till had told the serving staff that I was there. There must be a maximum of 2m between them. I was assured my order would be ready in mins. I waited another 10 before asking again to be told it had been missed. By now I’d had enough and asked for a refund and was ignored asked again and was told the order was on its way but could hear the conversation between serving and cooking staff and it clearly wasn’t. Another request for a refund was met with blank stares and reluctance. Had to loose temper a bit to finally get attention and money back. Staff were all very young, unsupervised and inept at using till and customer service of any kind. This was not just me this evening but several people queried prices charged and incorrect orders whilst I was there. I’m a local lad who has been a customer of the Ashvale for many years reviving excellent food and good service but my last 3 visits have been dreadful. I’ve said before that I wouldn’t use again and have but never again after today

Super food and great service from the staff. Portions are a good size and tasty. If you enjoy fish and chips I recommend this place.

Really disappointed in this place, when we walked in the door it looked very dowdy and run down but we were looking for something to eat before travelling back home. We got a fish supper to share - which was quite expensive for what we got - half a fish supper. Don't get me wrong, the half of fish we did get was lovely but the chips were awful. If you are only getting half a fish, its should be on the menu as a FI supper or an SH supper as you are only getting HALF!! Wont be back I'm afraid, best fish and chip shops are obviously in Lanarkshire where you also get a whole fish for less money

The Ashvale has been on the go as a first class sit down, takeaway and delivery outlet. A top class fish n chip restaurant serving many types of fish dishes in many guises as well as many other wonderful dishes more than you e ever seen in most fish n chip restaurants. The Ashvale is a large dining room or rooms with areas in different parts of the building always busy and happy looking people tucking into lovely big plates of freshly cooked food that churns out a steady nonstop stream of these different dishes throughout the day constantly throughout the week. Great photographs adorn the walls of local Scottish fishing vessels used in the procurement of bringing home the catch from a very dangerous job to put great fish on our plates. Wallpaper cleverly adorns the walls taken from old photographs of days gone by from the archives of the city. The staff are over helpful guiding you to your seats friendly and they know the menu inside out explains all dishes to those not aware of certain classic Scottish fish dishes. You can have a small portion of fish or a jumbo but the ultimate is the Ashvale Whale they tell me a 16 oz giant fish stretching over both sides of the plate alongside mushy peas, garden peas, beans you name it they’ll serve it. Bread butter and a pot of tea for me, but soft drinks and fully licensed something to suit everyone. This is a great place for great classic Scottish fish n chip dishes as well as many others. Well worth visiting and you will almost certainly go back time after time.

The choice on menu is way above most fish and chip restaurants, it is always busy, so better to make reservation. I had lemon sole, my family had various other choices, all superb. Staff friendly and helpful. Great value.

Quiet peaceful Resturant well placed alongside shopping centre 5 minutes off the main M90 motorway. Good food served by friendly staff.

Didn’t fancy cooking after new year so went to our previously favourite takeaway but was let down again. Poor quality and unpleasant taste. We won’t be back

Ordered a white pudding supper and portion of curry sauce. The white pudding had half the batter missing, therefore kept breaking when i tried to pick it up. The curry sauce was more like curry juice, it was so thin. Can't say i'll be back

Gets worse every time I eat here maybe hire some adults to control the young staff who haven't a care for customers

Went in for Fish and Chips, seen a meal deal so went for large option. Both prices seemed to be a bit high but place looked steady and assuming this had good promise. Received small deal and was asked more than once what juice I had wanted? After getting home the food was way below chip shop standard and very soggy. Sad I had heard better things? The young guy serving wasn't worth minimum wage and guessing he is a family member etc? I will say the curry sauce was nice good old style. Just a shame when a chippy gets it wrong with the basic of service and food quality.

I was unfortunate enough to visit here, I received what I can only describe as the saddest looking burger of all time. Quality of food was terrible for the price.

This is the second time we have eaten here and both times have been very enjoyable. The service is relatively quick and the staff are very helpfull. Kids under 5 eat free which is great.

chips were average, batter was brown and the steak pie was bloody awful! soft in the middle with the outside like a brick!

Nice family meal here. Fish and chips and lasagne and chicken and chips. Batter was nice and crispy too. Nice staff.

This is the takeaway I'm reviewing. I always tell people how much I love the Ashvale's fish and chips, but, I've noticed as per my title, that it's a bit hit and miss. When I get fresh chips and fish then it's ace, but you can also get old, re-fried fish and chips which I don't like, especially as nowadays fish and chips is no longer the working mans food as it's quite expensive, so you expect the best every time.

Early dinner, The service was slow to start but after that great food and the service was slot better

Far too over priced for re-cooked, burnt, dry food! Steak pie tasted like it was out of a tin! Gravy full of jelly, beef dry and chewy and pastry like cardboard! More batter than actual fish! Batter dripping with fat! Won’t be back.

A small portion of chips and gravy and a drink came to £4.90. Read my receipt and was astonished to see a splash of gravy over my meagre portion of chips was over a £1. Think I’ll be giving this particular fish and chip shop a miss from now on.

It depends very much when you visit this place. At peak times, your wait can be considerable, since it seems delivery orders are prioritised.

I will never return. I had chicken fillets and chips. Both re cooked and cold & hard. Couldn’t even cut into the chicken fillet. It was awful. The chips were cold. The beans were even cold as well. I have been up most of the evening being sick due to this. I will be contacting an hygiene inspector. We were the only 2 people there eating and it was the worst meal I have ever had in my life! You should be closed down. I took away a chicken fillet for proof. Even the lady serving wasn’t clean.. greasy hair! Dirty uniform. Never washed her hands once. Disgusting. Will never go back.

Keep trying this place but always disappointed. dried out fish and crunchy reheat chips. Will not be back.

We ordered a fish supper and a haddock supper. Haddock was mediocre and not fresh. Chips were old and stale - pretty disgusting. Worst of all was the haggis. Looked fine but the smell was so bad. We both tasted it and both had to spit it out straight away... seemed off, or even worse than off.

Phoned in the order and was told 15 minutes. Arrived after 20 minutes and had to wait another 10 minutes. Order was correct but they didn’t offer a bag for the large order.

Have just had a second haddock supper from the Ashvale. I complained about the first one as the batter was hard, the fish flesh was dry and the chips were burnt. I also felt that despite the server smiling she failed to say please, can t remember if she said thank you but the whole feel of the place was just too casual. Anyway when I complained the lady said she would do another one and deliver it. This she did about an hour later and it was worse! Dark brown batter, really hard and scratchy and the fish flesh was once again really dry.....never again......Really disappointed...

Just finished a takeaway meal, white pudding looked over cooked was dark in colour and the sausage was like warm in the centre, chips also under cooked. As other may have mentioned the front of house need to up their game , the girl has no personality, no please, no thank you and no smile......a very poor experience..I won't be back.

Had quick passing through Portlethen haggis supper last night. The chips felt re-heated and mediocre but the haggis was reasonably better. The young lads at the till need a bit of customer service support and lacked a wee bit of banter. Disappointed indeed.

We go here because my wife like's the fish; however some of the other food is awful.

The family popped in here on the way back from Stonehaven. Two had fish and chips, one lasagne and one chivken and chips. Good portion sizes and nice and hit and fresh. Good meal.

For a last minute meal on the way home from a days shopping we had no complaints. We both had the standard haddock and chips, one with mushy peas and chips one with coleslaw. Both meals were cooked well and relatively grease free.

Cracking fish and chips & mushy peas, fish lovely and fluffy with cracking batter. Got a deal from itison meal for two. Good speedy service. Visited the Aberdeen one a few weeks ago was just as good

Ordered online, arrived fine, lovely delivery man. But on opening the boxes to see about 6 chips per portion with our supper I was quite shocked. Children's fish, the batter was over done and greasy. The dog enjoyed it though.

Fish was OK. Chips were tepid and old. The place looked like it needed a good clean. Staff too busy larking about. Long wait for carry out. I will never go back. Avoid this place.

I had the haggis - very tasty sadly the chips weren't as good. My husband had a burger and thought it was very good. Large portions and good service.

I have just had a take away delivered from here as up working in area . Delivery was quick but our meals arrived on stupid small polystyrene plates which would probably be better suited to kid s portions , they were wrapped in paper with one supper not wrapped properly which ended up at bottom of the paper carrier bag . The chips felt as if they had been left overs from earlier service and the chicken felt as if had been microwaved. The portions for £7 were a total rip off and we both are still hungry after we threw it in bin . This restaurant could do with looking at how its sister take away in Inverurie works as the difference is night and day . Come on get a grip

Dropped in for a rock dish and chipped and was the first time I had eaten this type of fish for a long time and I loved it.

Saturday night treat. Delivery guy is very friendly and they are usually pretty Punctual. Standard varies quite a bit and frequently get the order wrong...even when in the shop! That said usually a pretty decent fish supper. Especially good is the spicy haggis pouch.

ive had a good few chippers from the Ashvale and though not the best its always been decent, but the scampi supper I had was terrible, probably the worst I've ever received at a chip shop,

I called into the takeaway on Saturday evening for some fast food as I was in a hurry. There were five members of staff and I was the only customer, so things should've been fine. It took 25 minutes to get a standard fish supper. The members of staff were happy enough and joking lots with each other, so I'll go elsewhere in future, where preparing and serving food is more of a priority.

I've happily eaten a good few chip suppers from the Ashvale, and though not he best I've ever had, certainly always been a decent carry out, after the scampi supper I received the other night, I doubt I'll return in a hurry.

I didn't have the nerve to ask for the Ashvale Whale, but had an 8oz haddock fish supper instead. Very filling. Plenty of chips as well.

Ordered a standard haddock supper and a haggis supper, which were cooked while I waited. Took 20 minutes. Haddock was tiny and don't think it was fresh at all. By the time I got home, within 5 minutes, both meals were cold. Place appears to be run by youths with no adult supervision. Very, very poor quality and definitely not value for money!! I won't be back again!

Two standard haddock and chips took 20 mins! The staff were constantly complaining and were hardly working. There were four on and only one was doing anything. I'll head down to stoney in future.

We hadn't been to this particular ashvale before, and will not be returning. Service was good, and the staff member was polite. Unfortunately both the fish suppers we ordered were rotten, could smell them the moment we opened the boxes once home, decided to try them anyway and discoverd it tasted as bad as it smelled.

Visited on 7 November and found it very good quality with fast friendly device from the lady and the front desk Ample parking available Will be back

Went here on Friday night for the first time

I have just received a delivery that contains raw chips for each supper meal ordered! Phoned to complain and was told 30 minutes, maybe more for replacement chips despite the fact the rest of the meal being ready to eat now! Not happy with the supervisor I spoke too, who did not seem to understand my point that ordering a take away was meant to involve no cooking on my part and I had already waited an hour. In addition the rest of the meal would have to dry out in oven whilst I waited for replacement chips.

You can get a good range of food here, but for us, it didn't live up to the Ashvale name. The chips were not as crisp as they should have been. Otherwise, there were no complaints. The service was fast at least.

I recently had a fish and chip lunch deal takeaway for £5 which included a drink. The portion size was standard to any other standard supper so was much enjoyed.

Lovely experience in this restaurant, very clean, service was very good and the lady who served us was very friendly. We ordered the jumbo haddock and it was a true 'jumbo'! The fish was bright white and the chips were cooked to perfection. I took my brother here who was on holiday from Holland and I'm glad I did, he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very impressed with the restraunt. Clean and fresh, great food and excellent service. Would reccomend to anyone for a meal as no complaints at all.

I usually try to find the silver lining for any cloud. The silver lining this time belonged to an unfresh fish (I could smell, and then taste that it wasn't right). The server, though, took the biscuit. She wasn't interested in her job, and neither were her colleagues. She ignored us, her customers, in favour of her friends, and showed a general ignorance. This place (pun not intended) has really gone downhill from the last time I visited. I'm so disappointed.

I find this place very hit or miss. Sometimes it is really good. Other times it is not. Tonight it was a bit of a miss. The fish was a bit overcooked and dry. I also prefer to order home delivery because there can be occasions when you go in and the staff consist of petulant teenagers who have no idea about customer service.

We visited one evening after work. The location is convenient for home and we'd been there before. Anyway, upon entering, we were promptly welcomed and shown to a table, although we had our pick, as we were the only ones there!

Haddock and chips done to perfection every time. A wide choice on the menu and daily homemade specials. Very friendly staff and restaurant well kept. Have been several times and always enjoyed our visit.

Since moving to this area about a year ago, have tried this chipper a few times. Although the fish has always been pretty good, the chips are often undercooked and therefore hard.

Been in twice in one week, sit in much better, food cooked to perfection. Jumbo haddock a must, chips peas and bread and butter, pot of tea.

Had a Groupon voucher for 2 Fish & Chips. Telephoned in advance, still had to wait a couple of minutes, don't mind when it's cooked to order. The fish was cooked to perfection, chips were great too. Well worth the money, will certainly purchase the next time there is a voucher.

dont eat here!! went on xmas eve. the takeaway was closing early for xmas which was understandable. went in half an hour before they were closing so had plenty time to order our food. ordered my food and was told to wait. was then summoned over 10 minutes later to be told the food i wanted wasnt available so had to order something else instead. the staff were too busy arguing with one another about who was doing what to clean up. no apology for my order. finally got food 5 minutes before they were closing. got food home to find the fish was off and the chips were cold. i only live 30 seconds away. by the time i got back round the lights were off and no one was there!! had to bin the fish straight away!!

have been here several times for take away and sit in but not found it the best chipper in town. Average all round the staff are good but the food not the best. Would still go back but only if there isn't another chip shop near

The visit to Ashvale was lovely i came and the waitress was ready to serve us straight away. The food was delicious and great service. But i must say the chocolate ice cream was horrible and it tasted like coco powder and vanilla ice cream. When i left the shop i left mu hoody and nearly forgot it until the waitress went out the shop quickly and gave it me! Great staff!

We have had our fish and chips here on several occasions, the most recent being 31st August. The fish has always been well cooked with a nice crispy batter. It was not very busy and the waitress was very pleasant and made a lovely pot of tea.

The restaurant is at a corner in a bigger centre. Enter from the parking area. We dropped Our bikes on the grass just outside and milled in, hungry, and it started to rain. Few People indoor when we entered. Simple and functional interior. Chairs and tables for grown ups.
