The Captains Table in Teignbridge

Loved this place when it was the Captains Table. Now taken over by Venus. Visited with family, but menu wasn’t much more than overpriced snacks. Ate inside, but pot of tea served with a cardboard mug. Sorry no proper cups it’s all to do with sustainability. Well the wooden tray/ plates with a bit of paper on were just about acceptable, but according to their menu one of the fish dishes is sourced from the USA. Don’t quite see how that fits the sustainability boast. When we went in the place was empty, three previous visits it was packed, bit of a clue there. Staff were pleasant, but we won’t be going back.

Shame it’s been taken over by Venus was such a lovely friendly cafe before always made you welcome! Now it’s over price and everything is disposable!! I do expect to go into a cafe and get coffee in a proper cup and not a disposable one!! I can get that from cafes cheaper who do takeaways!! Very disappointed!

Despite a warm welcome on a wet day, it took 20 mins to be served and longer for our drinks to arrive when the place was a third full. Saying that the lady serving was jolly and prices good. It is also clean. It's laid up for food and a bit canteen like with metal chairs, no comfy sofas, so after being there for an hour and parking set to expire, we were glad to leave. Okay for a cuppa if you have time.

This is an amazing cafe for Devon cream tea! Delicious scone, mocha, tea cakes, hot chocolate, tea etc., accompanied by great service, beautiful views and lovely furniture! 10/10 (we loved the music too! hey barbie, hi ken!)

This has become my regular coffee-gossip rendezvous - for the good coffee, fabulous view of the sea, very friendly service, and more amenable acoustic environment for someone with impaired hearing (me!). There are acoustic baffles on the ceiling in the end away from the bar, and I do think they make a difference. Yes, it is a bit canteen-like, and it would be great if they replaced a few of the tables with comfy sofas and coffee tables perhaps. Like many people I have lower-back issues which are exacerbated by sitting in an upright dining choir for more than 30 minutes or so. Lounging around on a sofa is definitely more my style, and more comfortable too. The only thing I really don't like is the habit of leaving each place set up with a knife, fork and napkin. I've not eaten there yet (It's a bit expensive for my budget), but I would definitely ask for fresh cutlery if I did since you don't know who's been sitting there before, fiddling with the cutlery, breathing or coughing or sneezing on it. This practice is very outdated and unhygienic, and I'd suggest getting rid of it! But I really like the place. PS For people with mobility issues, there IS a lift, but it's not immediately obvious. Go to the end of the building furthest from the pier, and you'll find it there. There's also a spacious accessible toilet on the same level as the eating area. The other toilets are down a flight of stairs.

It was a long wait for the old Beachcomber to be replaced. Loved the fabulous array of tempting home made cakes and snacks on display- never disappointed whatever I chose. The atmosphere was always buzzing and cozy - a great place to stop off after a bracing dog walk on the beach. Sadly the new Captain's table is not what I was expecting. Totally transformed into a rather clinical restaurant / cafe which was not what I was after today. Reading the mixed reviews after my visit I can see it will appeal to some who want more than coffee and cake. Disappointed after all the anticipation of the reopening.

Walking locally to explore the area while spending a week by Teignmouth Back Beach, I wanted to sample the coffee here. Coffee was good, although the service was a bit slow despite it being fairly empty at 1030. The only thing to improve is the access from the front road which was extremely difficult for someone with physical disabilities. The steps are steep and small, too small for my feet, and the doors open outwards onto the central handrail, making entry into the building difficult. Going outside was also unnerving as there is very little room to stand and get your balance before going down the steep steps. I didn't look for a lift but I'm guessing there isn't one. In winter, there's plenty of parking along the sea front, but I imagine it will get very busy mid season. The view from the restaurant is excellent, and so on a windy or cold day, as it was, it was enjoyable to have a hot cappuccino whilst enjoying the view.

Stopped off for fish and chips. Good portion, came with minty pea crush and tartare sauce. They also had a lunchtime special. Friendly staff. Good range of drinks. Great sea views.

Great position food really good service was by nice people but far to slow. 15 minutes to order a drink and food drinks took 10 minutes the food took over another 30 minutes and I took the empty plates back to ask about my pudding after another 20 minutes. Just a shame as it could be so good but won’t go back as far to long over 2 hours for 2 courses.

What a brilliant day. We went in at lunchtime and had looked at the menu online before. My wife is a celiac, but perhaps selfishly I fancied the sharing platter. The lovely waitress Ellie went to check with the kitchen it turned out the calamari was the only thing that wasn't gf. They served it with the calamari separate and with both brilliant gf bread and amazing local bread. Struggled to eat it all. Amazing taste, exceptional service. Will definitely be there again.

Not one to use for large groups - very few staff struggling to serve, with strained faces visibly revealing the stress they’re under. Nice personnel - they deserve better management. Food started appearing promptly enough - but tiny amounts of near-cold, tasteless vegetables in army-issue style enamel tins. Salmon was virtually cold and very mean in portion size, served with two small potatoes on large almost-cold plates. Turkey looked more generous by far, and the vegetarian stuffed butternut squash option was tasty but unfortunately overcooked. Extra veg was very belatedly brought - some of it even hot! - but too late to be on the plates alongside the meat or fish! Mini-Christmas puddings - don’t go there! Very very unpleasant consistency: attempt at attractive serving style, but oh dear! Customers won’t be fooled by pretty garnish, chef….. We want to be persuaded another time, that a small family group would be better served, and value for money.

After a lovely walk along the seafront, we thought we would pop in for some lunch. Yes it was lunch time, yes it was busy, but even after going up to the counter and asking to order, we were still waiting. Someone else came past and I asked if we could order and was told to wait 2 more mins to which it was time to go, we had already been waiting 20 mins without even being asked if we would like a drink.

Lovely place for a light lunch. Recommend the Veggie Sharing Platter. Nice atmosphere great vies over Teignmouth Pier(on a nice day). Staff friendly.

Some friends and us came for coffee and cake. The service was very poor. The coffee and cake was ok - there was a mix up with the food and we had some things we had ordered and some we hadn’t. No gluten free options other than scones and when they brought those out they weren’t sure which ones were which. Very disappointing.

We visited as a family in august for the second time and the place and meal was great, the staff are really friendly and welcoming too; however we visited in between xmas and new year and although the meals were good we felt a few things had slipped - the sauces taste so cheap, and for burgers / fish and chips you want decent sauces - it really took away from the meals sadly, the banana blossom and chips was quite a tiny portion compared to the fish and chips and the fish pie was supposed to be a mix of fish but was just salmon (perhaps that’s just luck of the draw though). It’s such a great addition to Teignmouth and hope the feedback is useful to keep people coming back. Thank you.

It was lunchtime, so expected it to be busy but menus took ages to come, ordering took ages, food took ages. Burger and chips - stone cold chips and burger dripping water! Steak sandwich was tasty. There were three waiting staff trying to manage a full cafe - they would have been better to close some of the tables and provide a better service to fewer people. We won't be back :(
