Cantonese / Chinese restaurants seem rare in this day and age due to popularity of other newer cuisines available for a dine in meal. You'd think they would be on the ball with quality and service.......however.....We dined as a family yesterday, The front of house was a gentleman in a suit, smartly dressed but lacking in welcome. We were promptly seated and drink order taken, all good so far. The food order was taken by said Gentleman who clearly took pride in now having to write the order down and put to memory. Still all good but lacking a smile. The starter came out (mixed salt and pepper for three people) which was mixed in quality. Ribs were nice, as was the beef. However the chicken was tough, the prawns and zero seasoning just batter, and the calamari was overly salty. Mains came out, for some strange reason they decided to platter up the sizzlers on the table next to us, quickly put the platters on the table smoking my son out and covering me in spitting cantonese sauce. Lovely. Then the quality of the food...The steak sold as fillet was arguably frying steak. It was tough, chewy, and didn't exactly melt in the mouth. The salt and pepper fillet was incredibly strange. Bland, raw batter, chewy, my daughter couldn't eat it. We asked for the bill and they asked if we wanted a doggy bag. At the point we said 'no thanks' that should have been his prompt to ask if everything was ok with the meal as there was literally a full portion of the salt and pepper steak left. But no... he just said ok, cleared the table and we paid the bill. We didn't make a fuss, didn't ask for a meal to knocked off, if they don't care enough about their food then we won't be going back. We dine out a lot around Huddersfield and I'd say this was the worst meal we have had locally.

Local restaurant that does take away, with delivery. Very pleasant to order over phone. Told delivery would be as soon as possible. From time of order to delivery it was 1hr 45 min. When it was ordered at 7pm it made a very late evning meal. On the plus side the food was nice, warm on arrival. Not over faced but ok. Would use again but will not be using delivery service at £2.

Had a lovely evening here with my family. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. Hot and plenty of it. Enjoyed it so much I forgot to take photos of the main courses. No complaints. We will be returning.

Delicious meal both starters and main. The table was decorated nicely and the staff were friendly and absolutely lovely to an overtired 3 year old.

I usually come for a dine in meal at the restaurant but decided to order a takeaway last week and was not disappointed! We ordered enough food for 4 and we were told around 30-40 mins (standard for a busy Friday evening I think). I have a nut allergy and my friend is gluten free, when we relayed this to the person on the phone, they were very understanding and recommended dishes which were safe for us, even bringing up which other items we ordered which were not GF just in case we decided to share the food.We ordered the chow mein, special fried rice, dim sum combination and more. Everything was well packaged, hot and delicious, the only difference between eating in and takeaway is that the prices are lower!

Good that deliveries are available at the moment which we were able to book in advance as they are only open Wednesday to Sunday during this lockdown period. Everything was up to the usual standard and the crispy Peking duck was still crispy when it arrived. We had hoped that the side dish of mushrooms would be Chinese mushrooms rather than the usual boring ones you can get pretty much anywhere. However, that was the only negative and everything else was delicious. Can’t wait to visit again!

I ordered a takeaway which I was very disappointed. 1. the chicken was like eating rubber 2. the duck was soggy 3. menu is incorrect4. chicken curry was full of oil and runny5. the portion were really small 6. the customer service was disappointing when I raised a concern. I will not be ordering from here again

Service is great, food is really good. It’s easily the best chinese in the holmfirth/honley/new mill/meltham area

Duck was pretty fair, the crispy pawn dumplings were good, the rest (the mains) were tasteless, threw half of it away. Don’t bother.

Firstly, they told us that it would take an hour to come, after an hour and a half we rang them to ask where the food was, after another 15 minutes it arrived. (Bearing in mind We live less than 5 minutes away)!!! Then they charged us wrong because they got our order wrong; the woman at the door didn’t seem to care. We opened up our food, everything was cold, there was a hair in my sweet and sour sauce!!!! Everything was bland!!!! No flavour, chicken raw, no spice, nothing !!!!! I’d rather eat a piece of paper. I was looking forward to a takeaway and they just ruined my whole weekend. Never ever going there again!

Just returned from eating at The Canton Chef Hanley no Huddersfield. The food was good the service good. But Nowhere in their advertisements or in the Restaurant do it tell you they are Not Part of the government Eat Out to Help out Scheme..

After craving a take away all week I thought I’d pay more than usual and get take out from a restaurant rather than little take away thinking I’d get better quality food, how wrong was I!!! I ordered and was told to be there for 19:05, I arrived 19:03 to be told I was early and didn’t leave the place until 19:35 with my so called food. Got home opened it up and threw away nearly all the meat in the special chow main due to undercooked & very low quality cuts (the chicken was raw in places) salt & pepper chicken was the worst I’ve had, didn’t even come with the usual onions & peppers in the tray. I’ll not be going back and could have saved half the price I paid by going elsewhere. Disappointing overall.

We chose to go here for our 1st restaurant outing post full lockdown because it's so good. You can reserve a table on line and you will get a confirmation of that (so no excuse to not cancel or not turn up!!). Protection is in place and the tables are all well apart. The crispy chicken wings were delicious and so was the crispy duck to follow. The special curry was lovely and creamy and beautifully spiced. Service is always excellent. Looking forward to next visit.

People who leave bad reviews about this place are probably confusing it with an imposter! ‘the canton’ who serve tasteless rubbish. Not ‘Canton Chef’ doesn’t even compare at all. This place is outstanding. Highly recommend’Po Po’ but every dish is really really good. They are popular & busy & yes right now you might need patience but that’s testament to how fabulous the food is! Well worth the wait through times when everybody is ordering takeout. Seriously great food

Was a nice treat .. not my usual take away but at least we can say we wil return the shredded beef in ok sauce is delicious

Really disappointing takeaway. Was recommended by friends but all the dishes were slimy and lacked flavour. The chicken was really chewy and slimy and there was little by way of veg. Not up to our usual Chinese standard (which was closed). Sorry, don’t like to leave negative reviews but this was a real disappointment as we had looked forward to a family treat during lockdown for a long time.

Extremely rude guy in a suit that handled our collection.Poor food, the prawns still had shells on mixed into rice, slimy and tough pork...Won’t return and definitely will spread the word on how terrible this experience was!I was a first time customer... first and last time now! overpriced crap!

Worst Chinese I’ve ever had. Nothing had any flavour even the curry didn’t taste of anything. Chow mein looked like sick! Never again

I visited on Valentine’s Day with my husband since we both love Chinese food. The staff are really friendly and the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere. Our orders were taken promptly and we didn’t have to wait long for our food to arrive. The restaurant had been decorated nicely for Valentine’s Day, and we were even given a free cheesecake which was a nice touch. Would definitely visit again.

Always order takeaways from here and it never disappoints as a family we love Asian cuisine and are always trying new places but we always come back here for our takeaways. Lovely staff great to have it so locally a real gem.

It is not often that I leave a poor review but this is well deserved! We decided to try this restaurant as it is local to us but never again. I feel I was robbed! The food we had was tasteless and definitely not worth the high price we paid for it - the most I have ever paid for a meal in a Chinese restaurant. The seafood hotpot had very little seafood in it and contained mostly bean curd. The lemon chicken was a joke...a small piece of fried chicken, no trimmings, that did not taste of lemon at all. Even the soup we had was not as expected and not very pleasant. The service wasn't so good either since the table we booked wasn't ready and to add insult to injury, they lied about it. My advice - go elsewhere.

Visited this smart, tidy restaurant for a pre-Christmas family birthday. First experience of dining here (I haven't lived near Kirklees since the mid-1980s). The food was pretty good, with a reasonable selection of dishes and menu options, though it's certainly not the best Chinese I've ever eaten. Decent, however, for a restaurant in a small village well off the beaten track. The service was excellent, though we had to point out the bill had been miscalculated by £16, in the restaurant's favour. The manager was happy to admit the mistake and deduct accordingly. It worked out at £144 for six (none of us had alcoholic drinks). My brother and I shared a banquet for two, which consisted of soup, crispy duck pancakes, fried rice, two mains and Chinese tea. Parking is on-street only. Applying the 'would I go again?' acid test, I'd say yes.

Nice ambience inside, plenty of space with tables, bar also. Also ordered a take away from there, friendly staff and good value

It must take skill to take the taste out of food and produce a dish so tasteless. Small portion of tasteless, rubbery chicken in thin black bean sauce, hardly any sauce. Rest of our order was just about average. Expensive by comparison.

We took our friend here for her 30th Birthday as a treat, the staff were very friendly and attentive to all needs, one friend was gluten indolent and they showed her all the meals that were gluten free and went out of there way to change thing and check items!

I’ve been going to the Canton Chef for over 10 years. Roy and all the staff are helpful and a joy to see, whether it is in the restaurant or through their take away. I’ve recommended them to all my friends and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone who is looking for a wonderful authentic Chinese.

Food ready quickly. Reasonably priced... Tasty food... Just right size portions. Would certainly use for both takeaway and eating in with friends. Staff very polite.

I chose Canton Chef for my 70th birthday party venue because I love Chinese food and have been before. I wasn't disappointed from arriving with 9 friends and family we were so well looked after. The staff are marvellous the food excellent and the venue is spotless. We were so looked after always someone there to pour drinks and to cater to our every need. One of the waitresses even stood out of sight holding the balloons for a group photo. My friends were very impressed and are looking forward to returning.

Staying in Honley on holiday so the restaurant owner knew we were unlikely to make a return visit. However, Roy was solicitous in making sure we were satisfied with our meals and then chatting with us after our meal. The food was obviously freshly made and delicious.

My wife and I have regularly called for an early evening meal having just travelled nearly 300 miles by car from Scotland. The restaurant is so clean & welcoming that we never even think about going elsewhere! Richard, a long established manager really does make us so welcome and suggests what he feels sure I will enjoy.

Having been here several times, I can safely say the quality and consistency of the food is wonderful. Dishes are always hot, flavoured beautifully and delivered promptly. The homemade cheesecake, which I'm told was a recent addition to the dessert menu, made by Kitty (one of the owners) is divine

There aren't that many Chinese Restaurants left in Huddersfield but this is a great place for Cantonese style and worth going a few miles out of town to visit. The crispy duck is beautifully crispy and the service is always excellent. We loved the salt and pepper spare ribs and the Shanghai chicken.

Collected a takeaway from this restaurant at allotted time. Still very hot when we got home. Very fresh, very tasty not a disappointment, far from it. We had king prawn with ginger and spring onion along with crispy chicken in sweet chilli and ok sauce. Mouth watering. Rang the restaurant to compliment them.

Agree with recent review. Takeaway food tasteless. Everything other than sweet and sour dishes have little flavour. Poor ingredients.

Take away. Food was tasteless, apart from the duck with orange. All the dishes we ordered tasted the same. Do not recommend.

The Chinese food served here is far superior to our local Chinese, having experienced The Canton Chef we now prefer to drive for over an hour’s round trip to come here, rather than have our local deliver.

The food was good, nothing exceptional but pleasant. The venue was probably the poorest element with the decor being slightly uninspired. Staff were pleasant. Overall not a bad place.

This restaurant used to be a favourite, we had noticed a few negative reviews, but decided to try ourselves again.

Went with my wife for a meal last night and as usual the food was amazing. There is no wonder it’s always busy.

We called to order 2 x chicken chow meins on Sat 26th Jan @ 7:20pm and I’m still waiting for my order at 9:10pm despite a chase phone call to the shop advising the time it’s taken so far @ 8:40pm. Completely unacceptable. We will NEVER order from here again.

Quoted 45mins to an hour and after an hour and 15 we rang to be told it’s being made. No apologies. We live in Honley 10 mins drive at most from the take out. In the end it was delivered 1hr 45 mins after we ordered. Loved having the delivery driver swear at us because he’d been knocking at next door too.

Booking was easy- rang and left an answer machine message and staff called back the same day to confirm .

The restaurant is inviting and clean, Christmas decorations were still up and they were lovely. Staff very welcoming and efficient, friendly service.

The best meal is the crispy duck at this unit. Sweet and sour anything is next and finally chop suey again any meet. Nice staff and very welcoming.

Small Chinese restaurant but the food is fantastic been a couple of times now and the food is of the same standard also a good selective menu ,the staff are friendly and prices reasonable.

My wife is celiac, which effectively means I have not had a chinese meal in circa 2years.

It was ok. I had chow mein. The chicken was white and boiled. The sauce was sloppy. It tasted ok but I've had a lot nicer. Partner had chicken curry. Average.

Staff are attentive but not overbearing even on a busy Saturday night, I was unsure what a couple of the more interesting menu items were like the seafood hotpot and crab claws, but the manager was very helpful and explained everything to us and stopped by the table after we had eaten to check everything was okay and have a little chat with us. Food was incredible- generous portions and full of flavour, came out of the kitchen promptly and piping hot.

Good service, good food, had the Singapore vermicelli noodles, deep fried chunky beef, very nice! Would definitely go again

Ordered a takeaway and despite waiting 25 mins to collect as told it still took another 20 minutes for it to be ready.

Giving this take away a second chance the special fried rice was far from special. The rice isomer the constituency of porridge and the six prawns and four slices of slimy meat with a few tiny cubes of something like chicken, leave this take away far from special and only fit for the bin. The other meals ordered were much the same.

The food is good, hot and full of flavour . The portion sizes are generous . It can be a good venue for a family meal or a meal with friends.

We used to visit this Chinese frequently but after a visit to their new premises in the centre of Huddersfield the size of portions was reduced by half. After Huddersfield shop has now closed and they have remained in Honley but with the tiny portions. Its such a shame. I notice that the prices have not been reduced by half so why have the portion sizes. When we visited recently we noticed that we were the only customers there and it was a prime night.

I would just like to provide some feedback regarding the treatment and complete total disregard that was paid to my father who attended with his wife and my daughter at the weekend.

One of the best restaurant. My family go here for special occasions. The staff are so friendly and always so quick to whip up an amazing hot dish for you. By far one of the best restaurants i have been to.

Despite several poor takeaways and an unpleasant restaurant experience in the last year, I decided to give them yet another chance as my children really wanted Chinese for tea.

After being advised water chestnuts were not standard in the take-away sweet and sour recipe, it was really appreciated to unexpectedly find a few in my order. This great customer service following a difficult day at work put a smile on my face - and my tummy because the food was great too. Identifying the customers’ needs, then meeting them, doesn’t have to be complicated. Well done Canton Chef.

The outside appearance does not entice but inside is very pleasant. Very attentive staff and the food as always was delicious.

Dined with a large pre booked party. Table booked for 7.30pm, starters (which were pre booked) didn't arrive until 8.45pm. Then mains, which were ordered on the night from a set menu also took ages to arrive. Rice was not left on the table, so you had to ask for it, putting people off doing so. Tea/coffee also not left on the table until after we prompted and mints were only offered to coffee drinkers, but we all paid the same price. This was rectified but again only on asking, which felt awkward. It felt like they were doing everything possible to stop us from consuming any food and drink over the bare minimum and thereby saving them money. I could have had the same meal at another restaurant for half the price. The food was hot and my dish was tasty, others were not impressed. Bottom line is, I will not be returning to Canton Chef, there are far better Chinese Restaurants out there who will get my future business.

I would just like to say that is the most expensive and worst Chinese takeaway I have ever had and will definately not be coming again! £15 for a mixed starter with nothing edible in it apart from the spring rolls, the chicken curry was mainly sauce. A few chips and some rice £25. Never again.

This was the first and last time we will order our takeaway from Canton Chef, its quite expensive which I do not mind paying if you get what you pay for, which I did not find to be the case. The food was bland and tasteless and I think it was thrown into the takeaway containers by a catapult. The hunt for a decent chinese in the Holmfirth area continues.

Still no change in food, expensive for what you get. Flavourless and really not very nice. Chicken was tough as old leather and the chow mein consisted of 2 items of veg. Don't bother... Seriously. No wonder the one in town shut down.

Ate at this Honley restaurant over the weekend and it does a great job of showing off Chinese cuisine. Great variety of dishes that go beyond just Cantonese and Sichuan options but all the classics are there too. Everything we ordered was light and tasty and with some dishes offering quite delicate flavours too. This is a big step up from your usual high street take-away and it is accordingly a little more expensive. But this is a West Yorkshire resturant well worth seeking out.

Went out for a Friday night meal with friends. Lovely atmosphere, delicious food, and very attentive service. All in all a very pleasant evening.

I have to honestly say .... THE BEST CHINESE AROUND! Went to Singapore last year and always craving proper Chinese since. This is the only place that can provide that - not greasy like the local take away and happy to drive all the way from Marsden to collect :)

Used to go here several years ago but switched to the Huddersfield branch as it was more convenient. However, disappointed to find that the Huddersfield branch had closed we risked the icy roads to go to Honley.

Been here many times and food (especially the crispy duck and chow mein) has been consistently delicious, fresh and flavourful. Service from the staff is always polite and friendly, if you catch Roy the owner on a slower evening he is a pleasure to talk to, very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend!

Without a doubt the worst Chinese I’ve ever had. Me and my partner have had to throw both our meals in the bin.

I have to say a lot of the comments on here are true, the restaurant was empty, the staff were not interested really and we found the food bland but OK. No atmosphere, will not be returning.

Not really a great experience! Food was edible, we where served in a fashion. Staff seemed a little obnoxious. I...

So....after a bad experience a few years ago, we decided to give this place another go... To be fair a couple of friends had good things to say; we now have to question either their judgement or what they think a 'good' Chinese restaurant is actually like.

Took my family from the isle of man and trusted this restaurant would have been a brilliant outing. As soon as we walked in it felt like we was not wanted even though we had a booking. We ordered a crispy duck and got 6 pancakes even though there was 7 of us. The heat trays did not work as their were no candles so food went cold. The staff were not helpful at all they were rude and didn't want to be there. The mains were shocking food was very poor and the fillet steak meal was for sure not fillet steak. Very disappointing from this restaurant we will not be recommending to anyone and upest that i brought my family to you.

This is a lovely restaurant in the little village of Honley. The food here was excellent, especially the 'salt and pepper' chips, which were cooked with onions and had a great sharp, spicy flavour. The staff were very attentive to our needs. There was little atmosphere, apart from the music playing, as we were dining alone. It was Monday evening though. More people should visit this restaurant as it deserves to be busier. I hope it is at other times in the week. I shall certainly be returning.

I have eaten at the Canton Chef in Honley on several occasions and each time the food and service has been excellent. Roy and his staff are charming and attentive.

Went with family. Normally have takeaways but thought we'd try the restaurant. Lovely. Good authentic Chinese with great service. Maybe a new carpet soon would be good.

We visited the Canton Chef. It was quiet when we arrived but we were warmly greeted and shown to our table.

Pedimos un plato de carne con salsa satay plato. Esperaba algo cremoso y peanutty. Lo que llegó fue principalmente cebollas y la salsa era aguado y soso. Pensé que me dieron en el plato equivocado, pero en la inspección más cerca había unos pocos se resquebrajó hasta cacahuetes en allí. Y ME REFIERO A unos pocos. Acabo de Google - Cerdo satay salsa 'convertidos' para asegurarse de que yo no esperaba algo diferente, y todas las imágenes son lo que yo esperaba. Muy diferente a lo que llegamos. Decepcionados.

This was our 3rd visit to Canton Chef and yet again we were not disappointed. All the food was delicious, we particularly enjoyed the spare ribs(salt and pepper) but all the starters were really good. Service was excellent very attentive staff and the whole restaurant is spotlessly clean.They also do take-away which is just as good.

My wife, myself and our two kids (2 and 4) found the Canton Chef by chance while down in the area visiting family. We were immediately greeted by friendly staff and seated at a lovely table. My son had just recently stopped using a high chair and they immediately offered an appropriately sized booster seat. The staff were always available but never hovering about the table and were absolutely excellent with the kids. Even offering suggestions on the best time and way to serve the meal based on experience to ensure the kids ate and we were able to eat as well. Separate bowls and spoons were brought out with the soup so we could split it into smaller portions to allow it to cool quicker and all without asking. These are all minor points but really are often overlooked when you have children. On top of all this, the value for money was excellent as was the quality of the food and portion size. Would recommend to anyone.

We always try to get to this restaurant when we are in the Holmfirth area. Lovely decor and the food is authentic and very welll presented. Don't be worried by the fact that Richard, the manager, doesn't write down any notes when you are ordering- the food still comes out as requested hot and tasty. Recommended.

Ordered a takeaway on Friday evening. Prompt delivery, however when the food arrived it was cold.One dish was wrong, we called to let them know and asked for another to be delivered. After discussing with the kitchen we were told it was not possible to bring the correct dish as there was nobody to delivery it. We were not offered a refund either.Disappointing for a first order. Would not use again.

This place is faultless, the service is immaculate and the food is amazing, the best Chinese I have ever sampled. It comes out fresh and hot. I am a vegetarian and there is ample choice for all dietary requirements.

We use this Chinese not just because it is local but the food is excellent. Wonderful menu, very helpful and friendly staff, and always busy due to the quality of the food. If you want a good Chinese this is one of the best.

Visited 3 March with family and have been going for years because it is local to us. I cannot commend this lovely restaurant highly enough! We have never had a bad meal or experience yet, the food and service was second to none as usual. Keep up the excellent work!

Nice food. Very sweet and friendly, but rather inept, staff who are easily confused and whose attention it can be hard to catch when you need something.

We have used the restaurant for meals and takeaways for many years and have been generally pleased, however over recent times the quality has dropped. We had a takeaway and quite frankly the food was dreadful. It was 35 minutes late (despite ordering 2 hours earlier) the dishes lacked any taste and were bland, and the amount of meat in the dishes was minimal compared to vegetables. The staff were apathetic about the delay.We will not be going there again, a shame because it used to be good quality

Went with family food fantastic wine was beautiful and the service was great would recommend this lovely resturant which is modern and fresh looking and the manager of the restaurant is a delight to talk to and offers great customer service
