Just awful we waited 45 minutes for the food. I ordered chicken balmoral what I got was charred chicken breast that had been seared to death making it really tough. The haggis was served on top of the chicken and was mushy. The dish was nothing like chicken balmoral I don't know who there chef is but I could do better. My husband and daughter in law ordered the steak pie the pastry was half cooked and the filling too salty. We will never eat there again.

Staff friendly enough Drink orders finally taken after sitting for nearly 10 mins. Prices are up there with Edinburgh city centre £6 for a 2 cans of coke zero... Food arrived my wife had cancun chicken pasta and it arrived macaroni with clearly frozen veg as the sauce was watery and a cut chicken breast plonked on the top. Nearly £16👎 My chicken pizza was good freshly made 10" £14 The parmesan chips was disappointing small portion in a basket with a shaven on what look to be parmesan...£4.50 Nearly £40 for 2 lunch mains and 2 can of juice 🗯️ sorry not for me had better for way less.

This was the first time I visited in a few years and it’s my understanding that the menu has changed multiple times in that period. Well, I can say I was blown away by the quality which we received. The ‘kebab’ which I had was something quite unique and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The kids meals, mac’n’cheese and fish fingers, were fast out of the kitchen and they were eating by the time our starters arrived. The staff were very kind and helpful and I will definitely be returning soon.

We were looking for a bite to eat on our way to a wedding function in this area and found this place on maps so popped in. The staff were very friendly and we were seated and served in no time. The food was really excellent I have to say. I had a lamb and mint burger and my wife had haggis quesadillas and soup and everything was spot on. Not too expensive either. There's a restaurant side and a (on our visit anyway) a busier bar area that we only spotted on the way out so you have a choice of noise and sport on the TV or a quieter restaurant. This place is only 5 mins or so off the M9 so worth a visit if you're heading back into Edinburgh from a day out or something.

Got a voucher for my birthday and we can honestly say we won’t be back! Poor value for money, as I cannot justify £32 for 2 steak pies with 4 pieces of stew and white pastry - chips were hot but it was the barrel of the chis we got!! Dessert was diabolical - not worth the money, 3 small pieces of meringue in a cup full of fruit puree. Kids meal ok - crumbs of chips and the burger roll huge compared to the beef patty. Kids dessert and adults dessert same size of bowls. Service as good though.

Have visited the Canalside regularly though after a couple of poor experiences at the tail end of 2023, decided to give it a miss for a while. Tried again today and sad to say the food continued to be poor and over priced. I don’t know what has happened as this place used to be one of our favourites and a regular haunts but it seems to have gone down hill. We thought the new menus could signal improvements but - nope. I paid £16 for fish and chips and couldn’t eat most of it as the batter was so thick, over cooked and I struggled to cut through it. When I managed to crack through the batter the fish was over cooked and had disintegrated. We mentioned the poor quality to the staff team, showing them the thick overcooked batter, who said “that’s a shame, I will show it to the chef” - nothing more and not even a reduction on the bill. No real apology either or offer of something else considering I missed out on a main. My partner got a £14 Mac n Cheese that could have been mistaken for a starter or kids portion. Tried the churros to finish, think they were frozen (£7 for 3) and the choc dipping sauce was a hard lump in the smallest of sauce bowls. Definitely no way of dipping the churros or even spreading the chocolate. We had 3 beers, a soft drink, Fish and Chips, Mac and Cheese and a portion of churros - didn’t feel worth the £60 tag with no reduction for an inedible £16 main. Think that’s our last visit now. Shame as it used to be good and good value for money.

Time was 6:30 and there was only one table of 2 in the restaurant, place was dead. Food was strange choices and below standard. Garlic bread with cheese. Basically warm brown seeded break with the smallest fraction of grated cheese and chopped spring onion, not good Macaroni and chips served with warm seeded bread. Macaroni was okay tasted of mustard. chips frozen but the best part. Chicken balmoral below standard dry Wouldn’t repeat the visit left feeling hungry and unsatisfied also quite expensive for what it is.

So yesterday I went for lunch at the canalside and it has seriously went downhill. I posted a wee comment on their page without going into detail all I said was I was disappointed, as I don't believe in totally slating a business on fb. However they have now deleted my post and blocked me from their page so I am taking it upon myself to leave an honest review. 21 pounds for 2 course isn't the cheapest so I expected something at least edible. I can't fault the waiting staff as they did their job and the food was served promptly as we explained we were in a bit of a rush. I ordered the tomatoe and roast pepper soup for starter and the festive burger for main. Bearing in mind this was 21 quid.... The soup was basically as though they'd opened a tin of tomatoes and heat it up. Nothing more, nothing less. I'd have put up with that as a starter if the burger that came next was actually so bad that we were sniffing it before every bite as there was strange whiff to the meat which us panicking it was off, which we really shouldn't be having to do. We ended up leaving it . The only part which was actually good was the pigs in blankets on top. The point of my post is why can't I post an honest criticism about food which I paid good money for without getting blocked. All I said on the page that they have went down hill. Any decent business would have wanted to know what the issue was in the hope to resolve it for future potential customers. Make your own mind up but I won't be back .

Booked a table for dinner in the restaurant but when we arrived at the bar for a pre dinner drink we were informed the restaurant was closed Monday to Friday and meals were to be eaten in the bar. We have done this before and it hasn’t been a problem, however we have been avoiding the restaurant for some time as we like to have a pre dinner drink in the bar, but the bar experience has gradually deteriorated. There have always been big television screens, which although I don’t like them I have tolerated as the sound was either off or very low. But our last couple of visits have been spoiled with a very loud television dominating the room showing game shows. I don’t watch these at home so I object to being subjected to them on an evening out. I don’t know for whose benefit these are on but it complete spoils any atmosphere. The lights are far too bright and the drinks are definitely overpriced for where the bar is situated, I’d say even pricey for Glasgow and Edinburgh which we visit regularly. We have been regulars for years and usually enjoy our meal, on this occasion we left for somewhere we could enjoy our meal without the awful atmosphere. Was going to rate it a 2 but since we have had many nice meals in the past settled on a 3.

Staff were lovely and welcoming. Beautiful place to have a meal/drinks. Food was okay. Calamari was rubbery and a very small portion for the price. It was served with deep fried veg which was odd and wasn't pleasant. Chips weren't crispy and tasted like oil. Burger was very pink in the middle. We weren't asked if we were okay with that. It wasnt very flavoursome, had to add bbq Sause. The roll wasn't toasted so went soggy with the red juices of the burger. The chicken starter tasted like oil and The haggis balls were soggy in the middle. Over all we feel the oil wasn't hot enough and hadn't been changed in some time. The food was over priced for the portion sizes and quality presented. We will definitely be back for drinks but sadly not food.

Dinner for 2 - Saturday night Restaurant was not full but the service really ruined the evening for us. Initial drinks order was only taken after 15minutes of waiting. Looking around it was clear to see many empty glasses on several of the tables. Mushroom starter was good, Noodle starter was not great no sign of any chili, garlic or lime as mentioned on the menu. When plates were cleared we were not asked how the food was. The drinks menu on the table was full of finger prints made by someone with food all over their hands. Food menus were also sticky. Main course took over 30 minutes to arrive, our drinks were empty in this time. Table behind us got another round of drinks which where put down next to empty glasses - table was never cleared. There is one waitress with long hair and glasses who kept wandering to the bar to look at her phone or play with her hair, she was really disinterested in serving it appeared. The lack of attention and slap dash attitude of staff was really disappointing. The main course was great but unfortunately the service let the restaurant down and for that reason we will not be returning. Some basic staff training is needed at this venue.

This was a first visit to Canalside. (Living in Linlithgow, I'd eaten at their other restaurant here and enjoyed the experience). I assume it was in an effort to cut costs (understandable) that the restaurant wasn't available and instead food was served in the adjoining bar. As a senior citizen, I did not enjoy the atmosphere - large TV screens with intrusive music, so not what I was expecting. The food options were quite different from what's on offer in L'gow - more emphasis on high carb options - I enjoyed the gnocci I'd ordered but didn't appreciate the unexpected garlic bread - I'd much have preferred a side salad for a better balanced plate. There was little emphasis on vegetables in general which was disappointing. My other half really enjoyed the chicken caesar - not too heavy for a smaller appetitie. I won't be rushing back.

Partner and I booked last minute and were very pleased we could get a table. 7.45pm Sat evening. Advised no rice as we were seated but could substitute with chips. Straight away what we had earlier looked at was off the menu. Ordered drinks and water for table, still waiting on the water! Friendly staff but service a bit slow in general. Ordered meal then waiter returned to say they did not have enough of the ingredients to produce it. No onion, pepper, salt chicken… which sadly means many other dishes are now unavailable too. Opted for chicken burgers. Sadly it is chargrilled and the chicken and roll was overly so, (burnt) drowning out all other flavours. Needless to say we left without even browsing the dessert menu. Paying the bill was a delay with confusion on their part and frankly will never be back to this restaurant. Very disappointed.

The main restaurant was closed when we visited but the bar area is also lovely, and the service was warm and welcoming. Great food totally helped round off a lovely visit. Plenty of parking and worth a visit.

Food was good value for money and the cocktail/mocktail selection was excellent. Staff were really friendly, but service was a bit uncoordinated at times. However, every issue was dealt with and we had a lovely meal and evening!

This is my local restaurant and I would really love the Canalside to be my go-to every weekend. I’ve been several times over the past few months and the experience has been underwhelming unfortunately. The fajitas were basic for £12. Chicken balmoral lacked effort - haggis was just a slice on the top of the chicken (like what you would get in a fry) rather than stuffed inside the chicken. The veg and roast potatoes were clearly frozen. Tasted ok but at £13 I thought it was expensive for what is served. My wine was served warm and although I asked for it to be chilled it arrived back to the table still warm. The serving staff are always friendly but the food is hit and miss. It’s a shame as the Canalside could be a fantastic place.

Great wee pub. Full of character and you get a great pint out of there.

Thank you to Eli who not only cleaned up the babycino, my son dropped on the floor, he also made a fresh cuppa for him.
