The Cafe Royal in Dumfries & Galloway

Most excellent Breaded Haddock and squid. Chips are superb. Nothing is greasy. The place was spotless and the service excellent. Nothing to dislike at all. I would highly recommend this place.

Looking at the great reviews we were surprised by some of the less positive comments. We both had battered haddock and chips with mushy peas. Sadly our experience matched many of the other less positive reviews. There were some positives, the batter on the haddock was exceptional but the fish was so thin it was overpowered by the batter and became tasteless. The chips were not fresh being served directly from the warmer and not the fryer, leading to warm soft chips. The mushy peas were also excellent. With regard to service this also left much to be desired the food was served without utensils and I had to go back to the counter to request knives and forks. At no time did anyone ask if our food was ok and we left without further contact. We personally will not be recommending this restaurant and when do come back to Annan will not have it on our list of places to go.

Ended up in Annan and wanted some takeaway food and met a lovely lady who recommended the fish and chips from the cafe royal. I have to say her opinion was spot on - the food was freshly cooked, generous but more importantly, delicious. Loads of locals using the dine in facilities too. Can thoroughly recommend.

Called in for fish and chips after a walk along the Solway coast. Got two haddock and a large portion of chips, beautifully done, not an ounce of fat to be seen in the trays after eating, batter was crisp and the chips perfect. Asked if we wanted sauce after ordering, It is rare to see free sauces offered nowadays tbh, anyway, we got enough sauce, salt and vinegar to sink a ship with and two pots of fresh tartar on top lol Service was excellent as well, friendly and helpful, watched the young man serve a woman ice cream and he took each cone out for the children who were still outside the shop.

Not good. I ordered 2 items, waited 1hr 45 for it. No show. Called them up for them to say it was delivered, but it wasn’t. Could only offer me a refund as they had closed. Won’t be back for a while. Delivery drivers need to check orders before giving it to the wrong address. Only getting 2 stars for the fact I’m getting money back.

Holy smokes what a meal! I came in a couple of days ago and had a latte & toasted teacake which was lovely but had to come back because the chippy smelt so good. A beautiful piece of haddock which I chose breaded instead of battered which was a nice touch; not many places offer a choice. It was so lightly breaded that it didn't take away the flavour of the fish. The curry sauce was amazing; that lovely sweet curry and it complimented my meal beautifully. To top it off all the staff are lovely and friendly. I'm away with work and go home in a few days but I think I'll be visiting again for my last supper. A must do in Annan

Food was good but what is going on with the vinegar??? It was a pale colour in the bottle so I already expected it to be weak, but I emptied half a bottle on my chips and still there was no flavour whatsoever. I know places are trying to find ways to save money but I part of the experience is having salt and vinegar and it was a real let down. I feel insulted that I was expected to overlook the clear watering down - I’d say it was probably a third vinegar and two thirds water. What a shame.

This is our local and we've ate breakfast,dinner and tea here for years without bothering to write a review ....... but now we are. The staff in the Royal are lovely ,friendly and always eager to please.The owners , Michael and John Pagani,are two great guys who have worked hard over the years to make this cafe the success it is. It is tastefully decorated with a homely feel and is always welcoming . As I said above we have eaten breakfasts,dinners and teas here for donkeys years and the food is awesome. Whether it is the gorgeous square sausage at breakie time or the brilliant battered burgers at lunch time or the fish and chips at tea time ,the food is gorgeous. We urge anyone visiting Annan to try it out and we are sure they won't be disappointed because it's simply the best.Well done everyone . Keep up the good work.

Well worth the trip down from Glasgow and our first visit of 2024. Wandered in off the street and noted more new technology on view, to help customers see how their order was progressing and when it will be ready. Very pleasant young lady welcomed us and took our order efficiently and with a smile - so we were off to an excellent start. Mr P was behind the fryer and obviously in full control of his brigade, so further reassurance that this was going to be an excellent dining experience. We ordered our usual meals of the special breaded haddock and awaited the meals being cooked to order - now we have never been disappointed or indeed had a plate of indifference served up in The Cafe Royal - and once again this turned out to be an epicurean delight. The meals we ordered were absolutely superb - the quality of the fish, the quality of the cooking and the quality of service were all 'top drawer'. This venue just continues to excel and suddenly the long drive down from Glasgow seems well worth it. Thoroughly enjoyed The Cafe Royal tartare sauce served on the side, another sign that this team are masters of their craft. We finished off with two proper coffees (no vending machine ersatz nonsense served here) and a quick visit to the spotless loos before departing for the long journey back to Glasgow via Kilmarnock. We look forward to our next trip to Annan and know exactly where and what we will be eating. Thanks to the team and Mr P - your efforts and attitude are both noted and appreciated.

We went to lunch at the Cafe Royal on Sunday ( 10thDecember) We travelled from Dumfries to go there as usually the food is lovely. My husband had fish & chips & I had the gammon & macaroni cheese combo. To cut a long story short the food was not up to its usual standard. The mac cheese/gammon dish was horrible. I managed to eat about half of it but was put off by the chunks of gammon that looked discoloured & were overcooked & also there was hardly any flavour from the macaroni cheese. My husband got a very small piece of fish & the batter was soggy so he didn't finish his meal either. We were very disappointed with our meals & we have been to the Cafe Royal numerous times. For the prices they are charging now the meals they should be a LOT better. WE will not be back there now. There are lots of other eating places with better food to spend our money in.

Food was ok,not as good as advertised,but it was delivered to my door. The driver could hardly speak. He seemed to be under the influence. He dropped my order as he was walking to my door. When I asked about it,he said he didn't. As he drove away he mounted the pavement and was shouted at by a pedestrian. Not a good advert for cafe royal.

We stopped to get F&C about tea time because we’d read and heard good things. It’s a nice clean place that cooks lots of things. The chips were ok the fish, haddock was thin and very dry. We wouldn’t return.

We are regular customers at The cafe Royal.. All food is freshly made to order.. The fish and chips are exceptional. Staying in Carlisle we frequently travel to Annan for a fish supper. Regardless of the time of the day the food is always of a very high standard.. I'm yet to be disappointed.. John and Michael are great lads with a good team of staff around them. They always make us feel very welcome..

Situated on the main High Street this cafe/take away is easily accessible to everyone.. It has 3 access points which is a great plus to those with mobility issues or those with pushchairs...A free car park is also situated at the back of the premises, something that is as rare as hens teeth south of the border.. A family business which is effectively run by a team of hard working staff that are very customer friendly,focused and helpful. To many locals this is the heart of Annan. Where many regularly meet up.. I was particularly touched by the "chip in to tuck in" scheme launched by cafe owners during the covid19 pandemic.. This was a big help to those who were struggling financially.. A heartfelt gesture that was appreciated by many....You can clearly see by the surroundings the time, effort, care and passion that is put into this business.. Staying in Carlisle we frequently make the 36 miles round trip for some of the best food.. Serving some of the finest Scottish produce. (The Scottish breakfast is a must)The fish and chips are exceptional some of the best we have personally ever tasted.. A family business serving some of the best food in the area.. Quality, freshness and consistency is impeccable 👌

Back in 2019, visited this place twice in 4 days, it was that good. Best fish and chips we had ever tasted. Could not wait to go back and visit again, however it was extremely different, nowhere near what it was, chips were soggy and the batter on the fish was nothing special. I don’t know what has changed since 2019 , but we were left very disappointed

Ordered a takeaway to be delivered and I must admit I was not impressed at all. Before COVID you would get a full fish, but now it’s that fish has been sliced? It very thin and not worth the money they are charging- fell ripped off!

We ordered haddock and chips to take away, when we got home (10 mins away), the chips were lukewarm, seemed stale and chewy, and there seemed an awful lot of batter in proportion to the amount of fish. The overall flavour was ok, but we appeared to have a residue left in our mouths which was like a white fatty substance that resembled 'lard' on the roof of our mouth. At £10.00 for a portion of haddock and chips we can honestly say we won't be back in any hurry to return..... PS; the fish was cooked to order which took 15 mins (don't mind waiting for freshly cooked food!), therefore, we expected a hot, fresh, premium carry out of haddock and chips, given the accolades this restaurant has received. We won't be back given it's one of our local chippies.....

The Cafe Royal just keeps getting better under the stewardship of the hard working Mr P's. Sunday afternoon as I'm passing through Annan en-route to Glasgow and I just couldn't resist stopping for an early dinner. The sun was shining and a table outside on the pavement looked very appealing as shortly the Autumnal weather will end that option. Plus the locals were driving past on a group of vintage tractors, so plenty of visual entertainment to absorb. Ordering their signature 'special' fish supper I noted the cheery staff were keeping busy attending to their customers needs, no shirkers at The Cafe Royal. Superb mug of latte arrived as I waited on Mr P working his magic at the fryer - I know not the specific roast of coffee they use but the flavour was excellent and rather satisfying. When the main course arrived it looked visually superb - a full sized fillet of haddock with a very light dusting of crispy breadcrumbs. Breaking through the breadcrumbs, the fish was cooked to absolute perfection - flaking, white flesh that was full of flavour and accompanied by chips that also were beautifully cooked. I literally cleared my plate - not a single chip went for recycling. Mr P evidently knows his trade but I will remind others - this man and his business are at the top of their game. Once again, thanks you to the team for your culinary efforts (and as usual your loo was spotless) - which this customer certainly appreciates. It's also a pleasure to eat in a venue where you don't feel that an accountant has value engineered every ingredient to use the cheapest ingredients available on the market - the fish, the potatoes and the coffee really do taste of quality!

Food is always great however thought would phone for a collection tonight to save waiting. Turns out that still had to wait 20mins after pickup before leaving with food. Would have been better not phoning at all. Staff when questioned said that phone orders are only to know what they have to cook and not a time to pickup. If return in future then won't bother phoning in advance.

Pretty mediocre meal overall, felt like some of the chips were refried more than once, the smaller chips were very dry and chewy, the half chicken portion, as well as being roasted and fried was microwaved to within an inch of its life, had it not of been for the gravy it would of been like eating jerky. Save yourself some money and pop along to the solway cafe, family run for over a hundred years.

Super friendly staff greeted us after we arrived to get takeaway fish and chips. We waited a very short time for our food to be prepared and how delicious it was! Battered Haddock and chips! A huge piece of haddock cooked perfectly. We followed the advice of another review and took our dinner down to the seafront at Powfoot. (Thank you 😊) A great end to our trip around the NC500, thank you.

When there is a queue outside the fish and chip place at lunch time it gives you some idea of how popular it is. We sat in the restaurant. The haddock with crispy batter was flaky and hot so were the dry chips ( not greasy) and a lovely copper pan of mushy peas. Service was excellent from a young service staff. Would recommend this place.

Great lunch! I had the steak pie with chips and it was delicious, my boyfriend had fish and chips and ordered a curry sauce separately, the portions were big and everything was lovely. Clean inside, staff were friendly and food came quickly. Highly recommend

Was this the best fish supper available in Scotland on Friday night? Certainly gets my vote - an absolutely superb fillet of quality breaded haddock, carefully prepared and cooked to perfection - thank you Mr P (Annan's resident subject matter expert). The team were displaying their usual attention to detail - my latte was also prepared with real care and their coffee beans certainly aren't some sort of ersatz grounds. Not the cheapest cafe I frequent but consistently the best in terms of taste, texture and freshness. Before leaving I made a quick visit to the loo - once again the team are well on top of housekeeping - spotless. A textbook example of delivering consistency and they really care about customer service. Free entertainment also provided by those customers who still like paying by cash - into a machine - which really didn't like some of the 'currency' being offered. I've never had a special fish supper at The Cafe Royal that was a disappointment or even mediocre - but then again Mr P demonstrates clear leadership and is backed by a talented and committed team. I'm now planning my next trip to Annan - 200 mile round trip for a fish supper - I think I may need intensive psychotherapy.

Dropped in on way through Annan for a healthy snack failed miserable. Large portion of chips one with gravy the other with curry. Only thing missing was a thick slice of bread and real butter. Followed by a freshly baked scone. Lovely grubby.

Great reviews and lots of awards displayed everywhere but a bit on the disappointing side. A bit scruffy, perhaps not the cleanest. Chips OK, but fish less than average. Pricey as a result.

As so many people have said this really is first class fish and chips. Tasty, beautifully cooked haddock, excellent chips and lovely mushy peas all of generous portions. Spotlessly clean this is a standard above a usual fish and chip shop restaurant.

Popped in on a wet day for some fish and chips to take back to holiday cottage. Good distancing rules throughout. fish cooked fresh, and was amazed with the huge portion sizes. Added sausage & peas, and parcel included mayo, salt & vinegar. yummy. No wonder the carrier bag was so heavy. Cheered up my day. Top stuff. Oh and check out the personalised number plates!

While in Annan for a short stay we had a take away fish & chips from the cafe royal. These were delicious & the best we have tasted in a VERY long time & we frequent some of the chip shops which have been winners & finalists for the best chippies in Ayrshire!

We came here on a Friday lunchtime to meet with some friends on our way to holiday in Scotland. They checked on Tripadvisor where was good in the area and this place popped up as being good food and Covid safe. What a find! Staff were friendly and welcoming. Though they've done much inside to make things Covid safe, one of our party was still nervous, having been shielding, so we opted to sit in the spacious garden. Staff came out to take our order. All were wearing masks and visors. Menus were all laminated to ensure they could be cleaned. Sanitiser was there. Track and trace was adhered to. We felt very safe with them. As for the food. Really superb. Amongst the best fish and chips I've had anywhere in the UK. The haddock was delicious and beautifully cooked in light batter. Chips were equally good. They did excellent mushy peas. And as a northerner who can't get chippy gravy in the south where we live, they did the best gravy I've had in a long time. We were absolutely delighted with this place and can't praise them enough. For the food, yes. But also for genuinely doing their best to protect their valued staff and customers. I hope they win awards!

Never lets you down the cafe royal , even in these strange times , still decades later serving tasty meals, the lady that served us in the restaurant today was outstanding and the place was wiped down after people left , I remember the rotisserie chicken in the window as a small child , the chips wrapped in newspaper , still the same kind and helpful staff , you are a credit to the town thankyou ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fantastic, good quality fish and chips. Very large portion sizes. The peas and curry sauce were also delicious and we had battered haggis too. The covid measures they have in place were also brilliant. Definitely recommend.

The Café Royal has pulled out all the stops. Not only do they provide delicious food, they have taken every step possible to ensure your safety.

A trip back home to Annan is never complete without a customary trip to Cafe Royal. Really good fish and chips and very large portions. What more could you ask for.

Called in today for a takeaway lunch. We have a caravan not too far from Annan and need to go through Annan to get to the motorway for home. We haven't been to caravan now for 18 weeks due to the pandemic, so really missing our fish and chips. I can only say 'well done' for managing a difficult situation so easily, good signage and instruction on what to do and how to queue, and not to mention the excellent fish and chip lunch, just as good as ever. Hopefully your restaurant will be allowed to open soon and some normality resumes. Thank you for lunch from a safe environment.

A big shout out to all the amazing staff at cafe Royal who are going above any beyond the call of duty during a very difficult time due to covid19. Here are a very motivated staff team that "think outside the box" to continue to provide a much needed service in the area. Very friendly and efficient staff, clean, warm and pleasant cafe. We sat in the cafe and had fish, chips and curry sauce, with a pot of tea, which we thoroughly enjoyed! Highly recommend and will definitely be back

I myself find the food first class but I took my granddaughter in for a meal and she couldn’t have any chips as she is a vegetarian and although they are vegetarian friendly they do use beef dripping for cooking chips which is certainly not vegetarian friendly, so I had to cancel my meal and take her along to the Solway cafe as they use vegetarian oil.

I see that they are vegetarian friendly yet my granddaughter won’t eat here because they fry chips in beef dripping, hardly vegetarian friendly, she won’t post anything on Facebook because they don’t take criticism very well

Had take away fish and chips, and it was the best we’ve had in ages. We would have gone back for breakfast on Sunday, but headed home early because of high winds. Really would recommend.

Turned up as a group of 8 on a Sunday night with no booking. Had a really delicious meal. The service was very prompt and the staff were delightful and extremely welcoming. The food here really is very fresh. The potatoes are still cooked fresh for the chips - a real rarity these days.

Five of us waded in to the Cafe Royal without a reservation for a sit down fish supper, what to say it was just brilliant, the battered or breaded haddock and chips with mushy peas, bread & butter was superb, we all went home happy and full.

The best chips you will ever ever eat. Takeaway or sit in you won’t be disappointed. I like their sausage and chips - ask for a sausage supper. Amazing.

Popped in for breakfast on Christmas eve with my husband after braving asda, the service was fab, efficient & the food was lovely. Cafe was nice and clean. Will be back soon.

Always wow food and great service. Was open at 7.45. Great selection of breakfasts. Generous portions at good prices.

We decided to sit in and have fish and chips. The portions were large with one and a half haddock and the fish was so fresh. The chips were excellent too. Good friendly service added to the experience.
