We've been here a few times over the last 18 months as it's a beautiful spot; English countryside at its very best. The food has always been reasonably priced and tuna melts with salad and crisps perfect. It seems now the ownership/management as changed. We visited yesterday and paid £12.50 for a basic ham and pickle sandwich! £12.50!! Just a few salad leaves on the side. Two pieces of bread and a slice of ham. We only had one, £25 for two sarnies would be ridiculous. Tuna melts aren't served anymore. The young guy serving had a cough, very off-putting. When did a basic sandwich become so expensive?! We won't be going back, so many other beautiful places to choose from.

If there is a better spot on earth on a sunny morning to have a coffee and sandwich, then I haven't seen it. Great entertainment watching vehicles with different levels of confidence go over the narrow bridge or opt for the ford.

Sadly I cannot share the same views regarding service - it was appaling. Having done a lovely walk around the Lorna Doone valley we were all looking forward to adelicious piece of cake and cup of tea back at The Buttery. To our disappointment when we arrived shortly after 3pm on Tuesday we told there was only one piece of flapjack which we purchased along with 3 tea cups of tea which we were told would come out in due course. What we didnt realise that we would still be waiting for these teas 25 minutes later. I went into the cafe to ask for my mney back and one of the girls stated that she had told me I would be waiting for this long. Question - how long does it take to pur a cup of tea? Not 25 minutes surely...... This is completely untrue and I stated this. had I known I wouldnt have purchased anything in the first place. Rather sarcastically she suggested "i Have a good day" to which annoyed me somewhat and no apology at any stage was given. My summary of the tea rooms was it lacked any management prowess and also appeared somewhat dirty. The young lady's demeanour suggested she lacked any customer training and any empathy. Work to do in this establishment.

Substantial breakfast for both a meat eater & a vegetarian. Excellent service which included an offer to refresh & top up our teapot. Beautiful location, so well worth the effort of seeking out this delightful eatery & it's charming staff. We will be back.

7 of us came. All ordered differently everything was great. The service is very friendly, quality of food is amazing and it’s in a beautiful setting. Shop and art gallery next door too.

Fantastic “fire side evening event” meal of chickpea curry & sausage & mash for the kids. Really good value for money, good portions. The food was delicious and a really lovely atmosphere eating outside under the tarp with the fire going! We also stopped off for a takeaway cheese scone & coffees the day before - best cheese scone I’ve had in ages!

We had a lovely lunch at the Commodore. The service was just the right mix of professional but friendly, not too pushy but not ignored either. We had a table with a lovely view which was helped by the day being sunny and warm. Our lunch was nicely presented and tasted great, I think it wasn't over priced compared to other pubs and restaurants in Instow but I think the Commodore has a nicer ambience. Definitely come back again, the only caveat is that the bar prices are maybe a bit higher than in the pub.

The Best Fish and Chips in Barnstaple – Hands Down! Pelican Fish and Chips is my absolute favourite spot in Barnstaple — it’s the kind of place that reels you in once and keeps you coming back for more. The fish is always perfectly cooked, light and flaky with that golden, crispy batter you dream about. The chips? Chunky, piping hot, and just the right amount of salt and vinegar. The vibe is friendly and relaxed, and there’s a subtle seaside charm that makes you feel like you’re just steps from the ocean (even if you’re not). It’s got that classic British chippy feel, with a little splash of something special — like the Pelican crew sprinkled in a bit of sea magic. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, drop anchor here. You won’t regret it.
