Stayed here during a recent motorcycle tour of Scotland for two nights, SHAME ON ME for not staying here on previous tours! An ideal location and geared up for bikers with secure parking, air line, wash bay and cleaning and oil products to keep you topped up and on the road. Rooms were ideal and the food excellent, hearty with big portions. Staff couldn’t do enough to help us. Would 100% stop again.

Absolutely fantastic hotel, highly recommend. Second time staying here on a bike tour. Owner/staff are superb, can’t do enough for you and have on both occasions helped me resolve issues with my bike no questions asked, nothing being too much trouble. Great grub and beer and a nice bar/lounge to sit in after a long day on the bike. Rooms are good and the secure bike parking gives a lot of peace of mind. Will be going back for a third time without doubt.

5 stars really isn’t enough for this place! I came to the Buccleuch after a couple of days of walking and wild camping and I have never been so well looked after in my life. The room was very clean and comfy and the building is lovely, but most of all the family running it are the kindest of people and went the extra mile to make sure I was comfortable and felt at home. Outstanding service to say the least. 10000% would recommend!

Returned to the Buccleugh again this year. Previously stayed here but they were fully booked. Sat in the beer garden and had a drink before the meal. Great to see all the bikes parked up in front of the little green 'garages'. I was looking forward to ordering a Flaming Nacho Man Burger, but it wasn't on the Menu. Still we had a nice meal and couldn't manage a dessert. As always staff are very friendly. Sad to say there wasn't any draught Guinness.

Have been here few times & food has always been delicious with a great selection on the menu. Today (bank holiday Monday) the food was not quite as good as usual - chips slightly over cooked, prawns missing from swordfish & prawn noodles. However, still tasty & service was great. We will be back again & would recommend.

Arrived at 5.15pm where no one was in restaurant/bar for dinner. Expected to have fast service due to this. Very friendly waitress greeted us and initial warm welcome, sat at table to but then experienced very slow service for the rest of dinner. Ordered cheese whisky haggis mince pots for starter, very overpowering with pure Whisky within, we couldn’t finish. My kids had pizza, chips and chicken nuggets. All the same standard of oven food you would get from Tesco. Had to ask 3 times to get my daughter a glass of water, which arrived 15 minutes later. By then we had ran to our car to get her water bottle. My husband ordered Beef Burger and chips. Again this was the same standard as supermarket oven food. Will praise the curry for main course which was excellent but in all very disappointed with food quality, particularly kids menu, and service. Costs also overpriced for quality. They did apologise when paying as said service bad as place became get busy all at once. I don’t recommend.

Everything on the menu looked really promising. Two ordered the pork belly ribs and one the lamb shank. The ribs were pretty good and we loved the crumbled mushroom, chips and onion rings that accompanied them. The lamb shank was ok. At first it was served undercooked/cold in the center. After notifying the waitresses they apologized profusely and rectified with a fresh plate. Service was polite and quick. Decor is a little dated (not in the charming way).

Such an extensive menu where you have to work hard to understand what's what is generally a bad sign. However, I liked the monthly specials menu with each chef's name against what they'd created. Service was warm and friendly, if perhaps a little slow at times, but they were quite busy. I had a steak, which was tasty and well cooked, but lacked real flavour. The hot smoked salmon salad was a bigger hit, and the sharing platter of starters was pretty nice, though was more or less what you'd pick up from a supermarket.

One of our party does not have a big appetite and requested only a starter as a main meal, however unfortunately it arrived with the other three starters. That said we all thought the starters were great, especially the prawn twists. We had a variety of main meals and everyone enjoyed their meal. The larger portion of steak pie is a tasty challenge! My mum and I ate here one evening whilst staying in Moffat. we had the arbroath smokie starter and both had the Barnsley chop for mains and a sticky toffee pudding and and the quartet of flavour bursts for dessert. The starter was nice with warm bread. The main course Barnsley chop was a bit disappointing. It came with chips and a grilled onion wedge The grilled onion wedge was bordering on raw onion. Even my mum struggled with it and she loves raw onion. The biggest disappointment was paying £1-80 each for an extra of mushy peas which was really only big enough for one person. we asked for mint sauce to have with the Lamb Barnsley chop and was shocked to find that this was classed as an extra (there were sachets of vinegar and sauces for free on the table). 50p each for a small pot of mint sauce to us was excessive and we thought it should have been served free with the lamb. my quartet of desserts was lovely and my mum enjoyed her sticky toffee pudding but it was served with a tiny jug of custard. If we come back to Moffat i don't think we would eat here again.

Came her for Sunday carvery lunch with the family - bad choice by us. Meal was dull, uninteresting food and not what we would call a carvery. Two thin slices of meat placed on our plate - also available sweetcorn, carrots, hard roast parsnips and overcooked roast potatoes all at a price of over £10. At home we can get a 2 course carvery meal for £13.95 consisting of a huge variety of meats, vegies and potatoes following by a stunning array of sweets - come again as often as you want to refill your plate. Perhaps chef could go on the web site of the Castletown Hotel and get an idea of what a proper carvery looks like. On booking I was told that it was only the carvery on offer on a Sunday but while there we noticed other diners being served baked potatoes, burgers etc so feel very let down having driven a long way to meet family for a special occasion - would have been better to go to a local chip shop and had a decent meal there. Will not be back and would not recommend eating here.

The Beef Tub Grill was our dinner stop in Moffat as we we traveled to Yorkshire. My lamb chop dinner was nice. The only problem with our meal was that a large group was coming in to dinner after us. They were loud which made our dinner uncomfortable. That's not the problem of the restaurant, but the fact that we sort of got forgotten was. Nobody checked on us and we had to shove through the crowd to pay. I know that the big party pays the bills, but if you are going to serve us do it or tell us you can't. Food was good enough that I'd try again, but avoid nights with large groups.

Mum and I stopped here for lunch on our way home to Stirling from a weeks break in Sandyhills, Dumfries & Galloway. We chose it because of the gluten free choices on the menu as my mum has coeliacs disease and we were very impressed by the choices available including sandwiches, toasties, burgers and even a savoury tart. Not forgetting a very good selection of main meals and desserts. We both had the pulled pork burger. Very tasty and plenty of chips. We then had coffees inclusive of GF biscuits for mum! Don't get that in many places. Special mention to our lovely waitress Sophie who was very helpful and attentive without being intrusive. She put another log on the fire for us and asked us if the music as too loud (it wasn't). Thank you Sophie and we hope your mum manages to try the new GF hobnobs
