A little run down, more like an old-man's con-club than a quaint country pub, but not necessarily in an un-charming way. On a winter's day inside is cozy and inviting. Service was quick and friendly and food was hearty and homely, and well priced. Outside is a bit drab and unloved. Would return if passing.

Had heard nothing but good things about this place from many colleagues so as were hiking in the area today we thought we'd give it a go. The local scenery en route is stunning & the place is easy to find and has a large car park. The restaurant and bar are clean and cosy and there are several tables in a beer garden. Bar & waiting staff are lovely. The waitress in particular was really friendly and happy, such a contrast compared to many of the places we've been to recently. We visited as a couple and both had 12 Oz Gammon with fried egg, grilled pineapple, chips and peas (one with a salad), with a side of onion rings between us. The portion sizes are generous and reasonably priced. The gammon was juicy and tender, perfectly cooked. The hand-cut chips were perfect and the other accompaniments were also excellent.Overall, the food is out of this world. It's been many years since we've had good this good when eating out. We don't often eat dessert when eating out but there was a table of six seated nearby who must have been there a little before us and they ordered an assortment of desserts while we were still eating our mains. Their praise was so vocal we thought we couldn't leave without dessert as they were making our mouths water. From the generous range of desserts we both decided to have the Salted caramel blondie cheesecake, with ice cream. There were no regrets! Pleased to say the desserts are every bit as excellent as the mains. @ £13.50 for each main and £4.95 for each dessert, plus two rounds of soft drinks, the bill came to just under £50, not including a tip (which we felt was well deserved due to the excellent service). We feel this is a more than reasonable price for the quality of the food and have already decided we will be returning soon. The menu was varied and appears to have something for all tastes and there are several children's meals available. There seems to be a steak night, chicken night, curry night and burger night, which we will obviously have to check out! We finished our visit in the beer garden, finishing off our drinks, with the company of a very friendly cat (we assume the cat is owned by the hotel as there don't appear to be any nearby houses). 10 / 10 would visit again.

We arrived to a very cold restaurant on a cold day. We were sat at a window seat away from the the fire, when the restaurant was nearly empty. We could have been seated next to the fire. There was a radiator next to us but the heating was not on. When our meals arrived, my meal was not particularly hot. The jacket potato had been reheated and was dry, and cold. The side salad was a handful of leaves out of a bag, with nothing added to it. The peas were cold. Everyone’s meals were very disappointing, and not very hot. Everywhere felt a bit grubby, the menus had sticky marks all over them, and the table was sticky, which obviously hadn’t been cleaned properly. We will not be returning!!!

Visited here on the off-chance on a Saturday afternoon. A lovely warm welcome awaits, always staff on hand and a very busy pub. The restaurant was full so we sat in the bar area. It was slightly too small but didn’t spoil our meal. Service is quick and the food is delicious, presented well and a good selection on the menu. There is lots of character in this pub and it’s very popular. My only negative is the car park. Set on a hill and gravel but has lots of pot holes. Recommend you park & walk on the road up to the pub.

We had planned to have a Sunday dinner from them yesterday but due to new government rules we had to have it to take away so we planned to pick it up and take it to a local outdoor forestry sitting area. The pub went above and beyond delivering 20+ chicken dinners plus drinks down to the car park and even came after we had finished to collect the food containers and other rubbish. After that we will definitely be visiting the pub when things re open!! The food was amazing and the service even better!! Earlier in the day we visited Darran park at Ferndale and whilst there we spoke to a lovely lady who told us about a place called Llanwonno. She said that it was a nice drive up the mountain behind Stanleytown and that there was a pub there that didn't open until about 5. Before setting off we ate lunch at Scoops and Smiles in Ferndale which was home made and great value for money. After lunch we went to near by Penrhys park which is suitable for children of all ages. It was a little breezy but the scenery overlooking the valleys was breathtaking. A hour had passed before we set off on our journey over the mountain to Llanwonno. The drive was relaxing and the views were incredible. Eventually we arrived at the pub which I can only describe as enchanting. There was free parking and nearby was a really old church and graveyard. There were also lots of footpaths to explore. The pub is set in a beautiful location, was very quaint and had a real country feel about it. We only ordered drinks and the staff were very friendly. Can't wait to return in the future for a meal, because the menu looked appetising and great value.

Been here a few times with wife and her family. I like it. It’s not pretentious and does what it says on the tin - which is a decent Sunday dinner. One things I really liked recently is that they quietly offered my octogenarian mother in law a smaller (ie children’s) portion; it’s just a small touch, but it was a nice one that she appreciated. Outdoor seating a plenty with nice views dog friendly too, inside and out, water bowls provided. Sadly they no longer do their legendary Ploughmans Lunch, something that upsets me greatly lol, hope they bring it back it really was superb and I can say I am an expert on ploughmans lunches lol. Still I ordered the daily board special, a hot pork roll with roasties and gravy, misses had tuna mayo baguette with salad, gorgeous coleslaw and crisps. Oo I can recommend the Orchard gold cider too, lol. Beef -there was loads of it but was so overcooked I took it for my dogs which they are still chewing. Took our plates. 25 mins later after trying to get what waitress was left to acknowledge we would like a drink we was ignored. Wanted a dessert but after seeing the young waitress definitely not afraid of the bogey man as she was picking her nose on way in I decided to pay up and get out . The best part of this meal was the starter of Nachos! Although even then, the sour cream, salsa and jalapenos were just 'dumped' on the plate of tortillas - no thought to presentation whatsoever. I had a medium-rare steak which was slightly more on the 'medium' side and (along with the other steak-eater) appeared to be totally unseasoned. Again, no thought seemed to have been paid to presentation. The waitress never once asked if everything was all right - not even when we were paying the bill. As we wanted to leave, two of us took advantage of the 'take home' service for the desert - but the cheesecake ended up in the bin, tasting at least two weeks old. We did have a giggle though, as they had 'decorated' the cardboard box with squiggles of sauce....Ah-Ha, we thought....presentation at last!!!!!

Samantha, the manager continually lied to us, saying they had paid for the band etc. but I contacted the band privately who confirmed THEY HAD NOT BEEN PAID. We were offered only one alternative night which was the following Friday (15/12) but unfortunately we were all unable to attend with it being so near to Christmas. She then offered us a £10 voucher to be used towards a meal there. On both visits we were greeted firstly with a list of items on the menu that they didn't have, not a great start eh?. The food itself is ok but that's it, it's nowhere near the standard it once was. We were told that the place is under new ownership, unfortunately the owners are not all that has changed and as the pub/restaurant is quite out of the way we no longer feel it is worth making that special journey.

Have eaten here as a family many times before and always had outstanding meals and service. We booked here hoping for another great celebration and booked for 17 people...with booking for this many we were aksed to give the kitchen our chosen meals a week before arriving, which we did however on the night were told they had run out of some the starters... not sure what the point in pre ordering meals was for if they still aint going to be available?! Goats cheese on crumpets was one and one of our party settled for goats cheese on toast instead (with no deduction from the bill or apology) Had mixed reviews from our party about meals but nobody really said their meal was lovely...just standard or not very good. Service was also poor and meals were slow in coming out (im aware a table of 17 is difficult) but some had finished meals before others had even recieved them. Some staff were really trying their best whilst others were just rude.

We live in the area and have been several times now to this pub for lunch, bringing friends and family. It's fairly priced, the portions are huge, and we've always found the staff to be nice.I recommend the goats cheese and beetroot burger in particular, though you might want to swap the chips for salad if you want to stand a chance of finishing it!

Last weekend I stayed in Pontypridd with my husband and a friend. My husband had done the ground work the week leading up to this to find an establishment that would cater gluten free for me, I have Coeliac Disease. He found this hotel online and rang and spoke to someone to discuss gluten free and then booked as a result of this. We dined at the restaurant Saturday night. The waitress was lovely and gave me such confidence that gluten free was catered for and advised the menu selections I could choose from.I had garlic mushrooms.Chicken curry and chips. There's no denying the food was delicious. It was a shame there was no dessert available for me.After my husband and friend had selected their desserts, and as I sat with them as they ate, I began to feel unwell.I was sick 8 times before I left the restaurant. I had all the symptoms of having eaten gluten. I maintain a strict gluten free diet for obvious reasons but unfortunately have experience of mistakes being made in restaurants before. My teeth were clenched, I was shaking, by the time we tried to leave (hoping I'd been sick for the final time) I could barely stand.I was sick again in the car and my husband had to undress me and put me to bed.Sunday was a wash out. I couldn't partake in Sunday's activities we had planned for our rare weekend away and had to endure the 5 hour journey home with a searing headache and stomach pain.I wasn't back to normal until Tuesday evening - my appetite affected now until Thursday. My husband spoke to the waitress and kitchen hand (the chef wasn't on site?)... on the night but he really got no answers. During this week both my husband and I and another friend of mine have tried to obtain gluten free information by using the contact form on the website but how odd that asking for the hotel manager's email address is only 1 out of 4 enquiries we have received response to. Having sent a letter very much to the effect of this review to the Manager early Thursday morning I have still received no response. I want to raise awareness to both the Hotel and its customers to prevent this from happening to someone else.

Lovely meal, could have done with more time between starter and mains but otherwise all good. Good menu and big meals, well worth the trip. There were six tables occupied when we visited and of the three we heard they all had mistakes with their bills but these were rectified with no fuss.

The first thing I would like to say is that the food is amazing. However the service in this place is horrendous, it was clear that the bar staff and waitresses didn't like each other making me and my family feel very uncomfortable. We sat out on the decking then ordered are food when the food came out nothing was said to use, the food was slapped down on the table that hard that food came off of the plates over the table and still nothing was said. There was no knife and forks or salt and vinegar. So I went back to the restaurant to ask, only to be told they where in a cupboard by the bar. Once I found the cupboard I had to get down on my hands and knees to find the salt. The hole time the pub staff displayed a 'can't be assed' attitude. This pub needs lessons in customer service.

Friends told us about this lovely hotel , set in the middle of the valleys with only a church and grave yard as its neighbours.Friendly welcome from the staff, good menu and lovely meal, The vegetarian option of cheese and vegatle bake was first class, as was the burger and all the trimmings. No room for a sweet !!A lovely find in a beautiful setting

This pub is seemingly plonked right in the middle of nowhere, and this is certainly not to it's detriment. More a benefit to those who find it!I'd been walking in Llanwonno woods, and happened upon this place as the road winds it's way through the forest. Perched up on the hill, opposite a rather picturesque old church, I thought it'd be good to stop for refreshment thinking that the food may be so and so...How wrong I was. I ordered garlic mushrooms to start and they were the best I've had in an awful long time. Buttery, garlicky (surprise surprise!) but just very tasty. I had scampi for my main meal and enjoyed this also. The pub is rather quaint, very olde worlde. I may head back there in the winter as there looked to be a cracking fireplace in the corner of the main bar that would keep you toasty warm on a winters day.I'll definitely head back here again...

Up high on top of a mountain lies this hidden gem of a place. The pub is full of rustic charm and you are welcomed by polite and friendly staff. We were booked in for afternoon tea and were directed down into the beautiful marquee. We were greeted by the staff and led to our beautifully laid table. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and our afternoon tea was served promptly along with copious amounts if tea and coffee. The afternoon tea was delicious and fresh and all homemade, cakes were moist and the scones were still warm from baking, we were even offered boxes to take home anything that we couldnt finish. At £15 per person we found this fantastic value and knocks the socks off many other competitors ( and weve tried many) . We would throughouly recommend this venue to others and will definately be returning in the near future.

Just back from a fabulous lunch at the Brynffynon after a lovely walk in Llanwonno woods seeing the superb waterfall and lake. Miles of lovely woodland to explore on foot or cycling, plenty car parks along the road or park at the pub and enjoy food and some lovely local beers and ciders. The ploughmans lunch and tuna baguette were absolutely superb, I have taken loads of photographs but for some reason my phone will not allow me to share them, shame as they are superb pictures lol, friendly staff great location, opposite a quaint church where the grave of Guto Nyth Bran of Nos Galon fame, well worth a visit.

We ran across this pub while driving around the valleys. The restaurant was half full and there were three waitresses, so not what I would call busy. The menu was varied, we chose what we thought could be served quickly, faggots n chips, pie and chips. How wrong we were! After waiting to order, it took more than an hour to receive our food. There was a constant din from the kitchen, so we expected a brisk service. When the food eventually arrived it was like a good school lunch, nothing more. Pale chips !Very disappointing after the good reports we had heard.

I was slightly unsure what to expect when I arrived, the decor is a little tired and the place was empty at 12:45 on a Saturday. The table service was friendly but we had to wait ages for our meals but my oh my was it worth the wait. I had the burger and others ham, egg and chips. The portions were huge with loads of tasty good quality meat. This is one of the better meals I've had in the area and I'd definitely be returning.

The Brynffynon is an old hotel I have been visiting for the last 50 years. Today it is probably better than the years gone by. The current owners have turned it into a very good dining facility. Without it, it would struggle to survive this modern era.It has gained a reputation for Sunday Lunches, three sittings every weekend from 12.30 till 4pm. It also does evening meals most nights and again it is very good.I could recommend this eating pub to anyone, with its old world charm warming the hearts of people from far away. There is a marquee at the rear nowadays, to welcome and accommodate wedding couples and guests. A picturesque and lovely location.I days gone by there was a Martini Henry above the old bar fireplace, which once featured in Stanley Bakers file Zulu. Long since gone but the memory and charisma lives on. You won't be disappointed in this place of Welsh Heritage, and the food will delight as well. Good food, good selection, nice staff. The drinks are not bad either ( just make sure the wife agrees to drive)

Visited here on Sunday 26th Feb for a friends birthday. Living near to Porthcawl, the distance was quite far, but it was all worth it. We all had the Sunday lunch and it was very good, served very quickly too. More than enough food there, and the meat was literally melt in your mouth. For desert I had the chocolate fudge cake, and that too was amazing. The place is a little hard to get too, but that's coming from someone who lives nearly an hour away. That's the best thing about Wales, all of these hidden places always have a nice home feel to them, and are always high quality, and the Brynffynon is without a doubt in this bracket.I would most certainly return again, even though it was nearly a 2 hour round trip, it was worth it.

Went for afternoon tea with my friend and our daughters. The home made cakes were delicious. They do a child's individual tea which is a lovely touch too. The quality for the price was excellent. My only criticism is that it would have been nice to have our own pots of tea rather than having to keep trying to attract the attention of the waitress for refills. Would recommend highly and visit again. Far nicer than some of the big hotels I've been too in the area.

Having taken afternoon tea at a number of restaurants I was keen to try the Brynffynon. Unfortunately I was rather disappointed as I felt the white bread used for the egg sandwiches was of an inferior quality. Also I feel that there should be a choice of sandwiches with or without mustard and pickle. I don't eat either of these so had to exchange those sandwiches with my partner. We were offered refills of tea and coffee and the staff were friendly.
