Beautiful traditional Welsh pub out in the middle of nowhere. Went for Sunday roast and it did not disappoint. Tasty and generous portions. Sat in the bar as had the dog with us but the restaurant area looked lovely. Highly recommend.

I have been here several including a large family birthday meal. I have never been disappointed coming here, the food is proper hearty pub food. Especially the Sunday dinners! They were also very friendly and accommodating when it came to organising the birthday meal. There are two separate parts to the pub, they have a bar where they serve food and allow dogs and then they have the restaurant area. They also have outside seating and is opposite the historic llanwono church.

We went here for a family meal. Getting here was an experience in itself as our route took us along steep, winding, single lane country roads, with few car passing passes, but fortunately few people needing to pass. The pub is on the side of the hill so as you look out the windows see the angle of the road. The food was very good especially when you look at the prices : £15.99 for locally sourced rump steak. We fed a family of four with two courses for about £75. The puddings also went down well, all served with ice cream.

We had Sunday lunch here and all our party enjoyed the food. The chicken was so tender, we were served by lovely friendly staff and the service was first class. We did have a little bit of a wait, but the food and service made up for it all. Our party had different roasts and everyone said how tender the meat was and tasty the gravy and vegetables were. I would totally recommend the Sunday lunches. We'll worth a try and value for money, as you get loads of vegetables and gravy. You can also ask for more without any cost. There is also a choice for vegetarians. That looked stunning too.

Never thought to have food here before, but went and tried it for the first time tonight with my children and our farm friends, and fair play the food I had (hunters chicken, chips and salad with a side of mushrooms) was amazing. Not sure of the name of the lady, but she was very helpful and went out of her way to fetch their broadband router downstairs so that my autistic son could connect to their wi-fi to try and make it a more pleasant experience for him, (I really appreciated that, thank you very much🙂). Had heard nothing but good things about this place from many colleagues so as were hiking in the area today we thought we'd give it a go. The local scenery en route is stunning & the place is easy to find and has a large car park. The restaurant and bar are clean and cosy and there are several tables in a beer garden. Bar & waiting staff are lovely. The waitress in particular was really friendly and happy, such a contrast compared to many of the places we've been to recently. We visited as a couple and both had 12 Oz Gammon with fried egg, grilled pineapple, chips and peas (one with a salad), with a side of onion rings between us. The portion sizes are generous and reasonably priced. The gammon was juicy and tender, perfectly cooked. The hand-cut chips were perfect and the other accompaniments were also excellent.Overall, the food is out of this world. It's been many years since we've had good this good when eating out. We don't often eat dessert when eating out but there was a table of six seated nearby who must have been there a little before us and they ordered an assortment of desserts while we were still eating our mains. Their praise was so vocal we thought we couldn't leave without dessert as they were making our mouths water. From the generous range of desserts we both decided to have the Salted caramel blondie cheesecake, with ice cream. There were no regrets! Pleased to say the desserts are every bit as excellent as the mains. @ £13.50 for each main and £4.95 for each dessert, plus two rounds of soft drinks, the bill came to just under £50, not including a tip (which we felt was well deserved due to the excellent service). We feel this is a more than reasonable price for the quality of the food and have already decided we will be returning soon. The menu was varied and appears to have something for all tastes and there are several children's meals available. There seems to be a steak night, chicken night, curry night and burger night, which we will obviously have to check out! We finished our visit in the beer garden, finishing off our drinks, with the company of a very friendly cat (we assume the cat is owned by the hotel as there don't appear to be any nearby houses). 10 / 10 would visit again.

We arrived to a very cold restaurant on a cold day. We were sat at a window seat away from the the fire, when the restaurant was nearly empty. We could have been seated next to the fire. There was a radiator next to us but the heating was not on. When our meals arrived, my meal was not particularly hot. The jacket potato had been reheated and was dry, and cold. The side salad was a handful of leaves out of a bag, with nothing added to it. The peas were cold. Everyone’s meals were very disappointing, and not very hot. Everywhere felt a bit grubby, the menus had sticky marks all over them, and the table was sticky, which obviously hadn’t been cleaned properly. We will not be returning!!!

It was slightly too small but didn’t spoil our meal. Service is quick and the food is delicious, presented well and a good selection on the menu. There is lots of character in this pub and it’s very popular. My only negative is the car park. Set on a hill and gravel but has lots of pot holes. We had planned to have a Sunday dinner from them yesterday but due to new government rules we had to have it to take away so we planned to pick it up and take it to a local outdoor forestry sitting area. The pub went above and beyond delivering 20+ chicken dinners plus drinks down to the car park and even came after we had finished to collect the food containers and other rubbish. After that we will definitely be visiting the pub when things re open!! The food was amazing and the service even better!! Earlier in the day we visited Darran park at Ferndale and whilst there we spoke to a lovely lady who told us about a place called Llanwonno. She said that it was a nice drive up the mountain behind Stanleytown and that there was a pub there that didn't open until about 5. Before setting off we ate lunch at Scoops and Smiles in Ferndale which was home made and great value for money. After lunch we went to near by Penrhys park which is suitable for children of all ages. It was a little breezy but the scenery overlooking the valleys was breathtaking. A hour had passed before we set off on our journey over the mountain to Llanwonno. The drive was relaxing and the views were incredible. Eventually we arrived at the pub which I can only describe as enchanting. There was free parking and nearby was a really old church and graveyard. There were also lots of footpaths to explore. The pub is set in a beautiful location, was very quaint and had a real country feel about it. We only ordered drinks and the staff were very friendly. Can't wait to return in the future for a meal, because the menu looked appetising and great value.

Been here a few times with wife and her family. I like it. It’s not pretentious and does what it says on the tin - which is a decent Sunday dinner. One things I really liked recently is that they quietly offered my octogenarian mother in law a smaller (ie children’s) portion; it’s just a small touch, but it was a nice one that she appreciated. sunday lunch - how disappointing, we went for a family lunch as a celebration of our daughter in laws birthday. We arrived expecting a home cooked Sunday lunch that would really be something that was second to none. Let's start with last week . We went for a meal in the week which was very nice with real chips and chatty staff. Unfortunately I went for a Sunday lunch today . Good bits . Nice gravy ok veg. Bad bits . Didn't have our reservation . Finally got seated. pate with balsamic vinegar please taste it together it's absolutely foul maybe a chutney. lamb left under a hot light so you could see it had dried up . Beef -there was loads of it but was so overcooked I took it for my dogs which they are still chewing. Took our plates. 25 mins later after trying to get what waitress was left to acknowledge we would like a drink we was ignored. Wanted a dessert but after seeing the young waitress definitely not afraid of the bogey man as she was picking her nose on way in I decided to pay up and get out . So don't really know what to say one very good and one very bad . Is it same chef on Sunday and part time staff should be changed or trained in customer service and the old nose picking rule

The best part of this meal was the starter of Nachos! Although even then, the sour cream, salsa and jalapenos were just 'dumped' on the plate of tortillas - no thought to presentation whatsoever. I had a medium-rare steak which was slightly more on the 'medium' side and (along with the other steak-eater) appeared to be totally unseasoned. Again, no thought seemed to have been paid to presentation. The waitress never once asked if everything was all right - not even when we were paying the bill. As we wanted to leave, two of us took advantage of the 'take home' service for the desert - but the cheesecake ended up in the bin, tasting at least two weeks old. We did have a giggle though, as they had 'decorated' the cardboard box with squiggles of sauce....Ah-Ha, we thought....presentation at last!!!!!

Booked in advance for our xmas works party. We had snow and whereas I realise this is in no means their fault but they treated us all appallingly. They cancelled the event and refused to give us a penny back from the £25 we paid per person. Our party alone lost £400 and I know there are many other groups in the same position. Samantha, the manager continually lied to us, saying they had paid for the band etc. but I contacted the band privately who confirmed THEY HAD NOT BEEN PAID. We were offered only one alternative night which was the following Friday (15/12) but unfortunately we were all unable to attend with it being so near to Christmas. She then offered us a £10 voucher to be used towards a meal there. Totally unacceptable as principle would not allow us to give them another penny as no doubt we would be putting additional money in their pockets for drinks etc. I am bitterly disappointed and amazed by their underhanded actions.I strongly urge you to think twice before visiting this underhanded, unprofessional, amateur, incompetent excuse for a business. Shame on you BRYNFFYNON!!!

booked in at half 7 but had to wait till about 8 to be seated. all four of us had brie wedges for starter. they came with cranberry sauce and salad. they were nice we all had 4 each so plenty. they were like frozen wedges. so bit pricey at £5.95 each for what they were but we did enjoy and they were brought to us very quickly. so all together our starters came to £23.80. then for mains my boyfriend had gammon. it was very large he thoroughly enjoyed it. it came with 2 eggs chips and peas. my boyfriends brother had gammon and also enjoyed. his girlfriend had lasange it was plenty there with chips on the side. and i had penne arribbiata it was £8.50 so again pricey for what it was as there was not much taste. it said on the menu with chilli and garlic. it however was just pasta with tinned tomatoes. it came with garlic bread which was a bread roll buttered with garlic butter. which was surprisingly a very good idea it tasted lovely. my boyfriend had two sides and his brother had two sides. all sides were plenty. i was last to receive my food a while after everyone else. our whole meal came to £80. we would return but i would try something else from the menu. there was also a very noisy party of 12. we could not hear yourself speak. however this isn't the restaurants fault. but next time hopefully it will be a bit quieter.

Today is the 2nd time to visit The Brynffynon in recent months. We had a lovely Sunday dinner. The staff serving were lovely and the food was excellent for the meat eaters and vegetarians. They were so accommodating for me in particular as I do not eat meat or fish and now have an increasing intolerance to Gluten. Thank you so much for sorting out a lovely meal for me. Much appreciated. Will be returning in near future.

Myself and girlfriend have visited for food on many occasions and always found the meals to be of excellent quality. However on the two most recent occasions we felt the standard of both the food and the service has dropped, the girls serving don't seem to want to be there and it shows. On both visits we were greeted firstly with a list of items on the menu that they didn't have, not a great start eh?. The food itself is ok but that's it, it's nowhere near the standard it once was. We were told that the place is under new ownership, unfortunately the owners are not all that has changed and as the pub/restaurant is quite out of the way we no longer feel it is worth making that special journey.

Visited many times but will not return. Service poor despite restaurant very quiet and meal received not as ordered. Offered free meal but decided not to accept. Disappointed.

This place has a great reputation locally especially for their Sunday lunches. We went there early on Fri lunchtime without booking a table and there was plenty of space, although it did get busier during the service. The food on offer is excellent home made...

Have eaten here as a family many times before and always had outstanding meals and service. We booked here hoping for another great celebration and booked for 17 people...with booking for this many we were aksed to give the kitchen our chosen meals a week before arriving, which we did however on the night were told they had run out of some the starters... not sure what the point in pre ordering meals was for if they still aint going to be available?! Goats cheese on crumpets was one and one of our party settled for goats cheese on toast instead (with no deduction from the bill or apology) Had mixed reviews from our party about meals but nobody really said their meal was lovely...just standard or not very good. Service was also poor and meals were slow in coming out (im aware a table of 17 is difficult) but some had finished meals before others had even recieved them. Some staff were really trying their best whilst others were just rude.

We live in the area and have been several times now to this pub for lunch, bringing friends and family. It's fairly priced, the portions are huge, and we've always found the staff to be nice.I recommend the goats cheese and beetroot burger in particular, though you might want to swap the chips for salad if you want to stand a chance of finishing it!

Last weekend I stayed in Pontypridd with my husband and a friend. My husband had done the ground work the week leading up to this to find an establishment that would cater gluten free for me, I have Coeliac Disease. He found this hotel online and rang and spoke to someone to discuss gluten free and then booked as a result of this. We dined at the restaurant Saturday night. The waitress was lovely and gave me such confidence that gluten free was catered for and advised the menu selections I could choose from.I had garlic mushrooms.Chicken curry and chips. There's no denying the food was delicious. It was a shame there was no dessert available for me.After my husband and friend had selected their desserts, and as I sat with them as they ate, I began to feel unwell.I was sick 8 times before I left the restaurant. I had all the symptoms of having eaten gluten. I maintain a strict gluten free diet for obvious reasons but unfortunately have experience of mistakes being made in restaurants before. My teeth were clenched, I was shaking, by the time we tried to leave (hoping I'd been sick for the final time) I could barely stand.I was sick again in the car and my husband had to undress me and put me to bed.Sunday was a wash out. I couldn't partake in Sunday's activities we had planned for our rare weekend away and had to endure the 5 hour journey home with a searing headache and stomach pain.I wasn't back to normal until Tuesday evening - my appetite affected now until Thursday. My husband spoke to the waitress and kitchen hand (the chef wasn't on site?)... on the night but he really got no answers. During this week both my husband and I and another friend of mine have tried to obtain gluten free information by using the contact form on the website but how odd that asking for the hotel manager's email address is only 1 out of 4 enquiries we have received response to. Having sent a letter very much to the effect of this review to the Manager early Thursday morning I have still received no response. I want to raise awareness to both the Hotel and its customers to prevent this from happening to someone else.

Lovely meal, could have done with more time between starter and mains but otherwise all good. Good menu and big meals, well worth the trip. There were six tables occupied when we visited and of the three we heard they all had mistakes with their bills but these were rectified with no fuss.

The first thing I would like to say is that the food is amazing. However the service in this place is horrendous, it was clear that the bar staff and waitresses didn't like each other making me and my family feel very uncomfortable. We sat out on the decking then ordered are food when the food came out nothing was said to use, the food was slapped down on the table that hard that food came off of the plates over the table and still nothing was said. There was no knife and forks or salt and vinegar. So I went back to the restaurant to ask, only to be told they where in a cupboard by the bar. Once I found the cupboard I had to get down on my hands and knees to find the salt. The hole time the pub staff displayed a 'can't be assed' attitude. This pub needs lessons in customer service.

I stopped at The Afan Lodge today, while walking my dog as it is a dog friendly venue. I was served by Sam & Fran, whom were absolutely delightful, helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was cosy and the views beautiful on this sunny day. I had a pub lunch, which was amazing too! A recommended stop off if you are in the area 💗

Cold beer served by Scottie himself (the landlord, not the chief engineer) but the best thing about this place is the food - there isn't any :))
