My family was wrapping up a great trip to Scotland and this was to be our final evening meal at a strongly recommended restaurant. We were looking forward to a top notch experience. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow, the food was cold, and my steak was cooked to shoe leather. I could write a lot about this but will only hit the low points. In summary, after placing our order, we waited for over an hour before our meal was starting to be served. I had to flag down a waitress and she seemed genuinely shocked that we did not have our food. When it was served, it was clear that it had been sitting around somewhere. My steak was improperly prepared, over cooked and rubbery, and again, cold. We had to flag down a waitress to tell her about our food being substandard as the original waitress disappeared. An other wait staff person came by and they offered to have another steak cooked up. As we had been at the restaurant for nearly two hours, we did not want to wait any more so she took it off the bill. She offered to send the manager over but to what purpose, I don't know. By that point, the damage had been done. Much of the wait staff were just hanging around seemingly more focused on talking to one another, They were apparently indifferent to our awful experience. They were pleasant enough when they actually came to our table but really didn't seem to care that we had a crummy meal. The kitchen was equally culpable. 35 pounds for a steak prepared and cooked by somebody who didn't have a clue is ridiculous. The bottom line is that there are much better restaurants. The Ubiquitous Chip is trading on it's name but is putting out amateurish meals. If you want to waste your money, this is the place to go. If you want a great meal, there are plenty others that don't serve chips and deliver a top notch experience. I will be sure to tell friends who will be travelling to Scotland to avoid this place.

The Ubiquitous Chip has been a Glasgow institution since the early 70s - it is now under new management who took it over from the original owners. Perhaps because this place has always been SO good we were maybe expecting too much? We were a large, family table celebrating a birthday. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and the place still looks great with all the glass and plants however the food was largely disappointing. Because there were a lot of us we sampled a whole range of dishes - the chicken and hake were both good but we were left disappointed by dry falafel, undressed salad, dry leek tart and tasteless, watery broth which the mussels were served in. They had run out of squid in the middle of the day which was disappointing as a few of the group had ordered it. Then bizarrely they ran out of vanilla ice cream (at this point I was nearly offering to go to the shops) so no affogatos and unaccompanied dessert. I love this place and want to support it but they really need to improve on these small things within their menu or their loyal customer base will move on to the countless other eateries nearby.

Very disappointed by the quality of food here. Beetroot and onion tart was very dry and didn’t seem particularly fresh. Smoked salmon starter was a clod of fish accompanied by a bland avocado purée. Polenta and ratatouille was slightly better but again lacking in taste and no better than what we would cook at home. Partner’s fish had 8 large bones in it and the salad was limp and soggy as the oil had soaked through the leaves. We were celebrating a special birthday and had really been looking forward to this but decided not to stay for dessert as the quality was so poor. Very happy to pay for good food but this wasn’t at all worth the money. Hadn’t been for a few years and will not be returning.

Myself and my husband visited here on Saturday for the first time for food. We had previously been in for drinks and I just loved the look of the Brasserie as a beautiful indoor/ outdoor- esque dining experience. We had a few waitresses come to our table, not one particular one, and they were all friendly and pleasant. The wine I had was really nice - although I would say the drinks are on the expensive side. We ordered the oysters for starter and wow - lovely, fresh and juicy! Really nice. The ginger and soy dressing was also very tasty - and that's where the good food ended. A mistake of mine was not realizing that the brassie had a different menu from the restaurant, even though it kind of flows into one. For mains my husband had the minute steak and fries, which was like a dinner I would make my kids during the week and not a £18 meal. The portion was tiny and luke warm. I ordered the pork chop and whilst the presentation looked nice the pork chop was so tough and dry. I could barely cut it with the steak knife they provided. I mentioned this to my waitress and to my disappointment nothing was done about it. She just took it away. The table we got was also right beside a window which had the bar on the other side. So people standing at the bar waiting to be served could look right through and watch us eating. It was also situated where the waitresses collect drinks etc. so it lacked that nice intimate dining experience. We paid the bill and left. Overall pleasant surroundings but food lacks quality, finesse and is overpriced.

It looks cozy from the outside and it's even better inside. The staff are friendly and you don't feel like customer number 217. The cocktail I had was just perfect and the steak one of the best I've ever had (not exaggerating here), not to mention the venison haggis. Yes, it's a bit expensive but worth every penny. Highly recommended!

Got voucher for £100 pre Pandemic. Was unable to visit because of lockdown, illness and being careful with some family members not able to bring themselves to venture out. Wrote to ask if still okay to use voucher for family event to be told no. They feel long enough now that everyone should have been out and about. So as a tax payer( working pretty much throughout so no handouts for me) I have helped to pay them to furlough their staff, reduce their VAT liability, subsidize their business rates and probably low interest loans, they now have my and how many others cash from voucher sales not used! Poor show guys not even an offer of some kind just a straight no! I don't use the place, but the person who bought it does and is not well pleased that his hard earned cash had been taken.

I have had meals over many years at the Chip and without doubt when others have faltered this has remained a constant. The night we went they were, like many places, obviously suffering from staff shortages. Service was slower than previous visits but no less professional. Apologies were offered for any delays and I appreciate being kept informed. Food was splendid. Definitely recommended.

Having eaten at ‘The Chip’ a few times pre lockdown, I was looking forward to having a nice meal with my wife and friends. However, we were disappointed with both the quantity and quality of the food. It would appear that since the end of the lockdown they have increased the prices and reduced the quantity at the same time. I am really sorry to say we will not be returning as there is much better value elsewhere. My advice to anyone going is to stay away from the ‘ Charcuterie Board ( fish ) as in my opinion, it grossly overpriced for what you receive.

Went with my better half. We both had as described on the menu the big plate. A potential feast of sea bass - with bottle of Sauvignon plonk. However portions were small. We both had half a wee half starved bass each with sauce vierge and green leaves ( in reality more like a fig leaf to hide the wee tiddlers anorexic embarassment). The wine was acceptably cold but was placed in a warm wine cooler that had clearly by its temprature just come out of a dishwasher. We asked the staff who were pleasant but clueless to add ice and water to the cooler. In summary. Service was middling to poor. Portions small and overpriced. Finally, to be clear this is not my first trip by any means to the ubiquitous chip but it is my first post lockdown. The impression I have is that the establishment is reducing its quality and maintaing its prices to compensate for lockdown. But this short termist approach of milkng it's reputation will run the well of customer good faith dry. In fact went for a post prandial meal in Little Italy on Byres Road. Reasonably priced, lovely fresh food served by wonderful attentive staff. What a difference.

I looked around before I chose this restaurant based on its reputation. I was not disappointed. I was celebrating a landmark birthday with a small group of friends and as well as the whole area being spotlessly clean with a brilliant atmosphere, the staff were very attentive and helped us with the birthday cake, candles etc. They made sure all of us were well looked after. This is such a beautiful place and I will consider it for future celebrations when "normality" has resumed.

This was our Valentine's evening treat so I guess you have to read the review through those eyes. What a let down. The menu has changed and nothing really grabbed us..so.. we wanted to share the Octopus starter. They forgot that order. We opted for the most expensive steak (they forgot the chips) and the rabbit. All the other options were pretty average fair.. stuff I could cook at home like haggis, mussels and cod. Unimpressed! The steak was great but kinda expected for £30. The rabbit was tiny. Don't order this if you're hungry. It tasted ok.. but not very gamey. The negroamaro wine was lovely and fairly priced. The staff were very young and a bit rushed so you can't be too harsh. Plus they gave us the desserts for free (cheese cake was nice and the cheese board was straight out of the fridge so tasted of nothing much! This really annoys me) Overall this place is rammed most weekends but I really can't see why. The ingredients and dishes need a rethink and the staff need a shake.. overall.. very underwhelmed for the prices being charged.

Thirteen pounds for two scallops? Really? Both fish main courses sounded great but were, in fact, mediocre. Perfectly cooked fish to be sure but then so it should be. Not sure how to review the smears of sauce that came with the fish.....so I will not bother . Chips were too big, dry and served with a tiny saucer ('saucer' is being kind) of tomato ketchup which I'm willing to bet wasn't a big name brand. Disappointing first visit in 22 years to find this restaurant still over priced and seemingly trading on past glories...whatever they may be. If you want value for money AND tasty food (demanding of me, I realise) this ain't the place for you. Nice pudding but nothing spectacular. For the prices charged, I'd really expect something special. Nice waiting staff but still not enough to rid you of the feeling that you're being taken for a mug.

Here for a night on my way home, I dined with good friends. I expected a fine meal but was astounded by the quality I was offered. Yes, the food was sourced locally but the treatment was exemplary and gave an exotic flavour, even to the venison haggis! We started with a smoked haddock and salmon chowder. This was unctuous, just perfection.. our guests had Barra scallops which were the best I had tasted in decades. The chosen wines were perfect and the atmosphere calm and the staff welcoming. This is a well Kent eatery which has significantly improved over the decades.

This place is really wonderful, but. The food is pretty good but we wouldn’t say it’s excellent. We asked for water they offered still or sparkling. We unknowingly asked for still water. We soon noticed that every other table had a carafe (pitcher) of water. Dam, we we’re tourist tricked into buying water in a bottle. Our meals (salmon and chicken) were good but we noticed that we were served small portions (I received a pre-cut portion of a chicken breast) considering the price I expected more. Having read a number of reviews recommending this Glasgow 'institution' we were very pleased to get a last minute reservation for the brasserie. I was surprised when I saw the venue - it looked like an 'olde worlde' pub in need of updating and our table was wobbly. We ordered and then were shocked to see two dogs being led to the next table- soon realising there were two dogs already at other tables. We are dog and animal lovers but as one of our party has asthma and an allergy to pet hairs the close proximity of two dogs, aside from the hygiene aspect, was frustrating - we would have walked out if our order wasn't already in. The food when it arrived was definitely only average - whilst we appreciate locally sourced food the lamb/chicken and steak main meals were in our view over priced. The service was lacklustre and it was quite bizarre when a guy came to the table selling newspapers. Paying a premium price we would have expected far more in terms of food, service, and decor and the presence of dogs made for an even more disappointing experience.

The UC Brasserie is a sprawling eatery and bar labyrinth over multiple levels. From roomy atrium fine dining to cosier tables and nooks or bar stool snacking, you could struggle to find your companions unless they stand out! The Carte does not mean a map in this case unfortunately and I fear a trail of breadcrumbs would quickly be tidied away by the energetic and youthful crew! The venue is Busy but Roomy, They might want your table back for later reservations but they still want your post prandial pocket and they go the extra mile to encourage your lingering libations on premises. Reasonable prices but not cheap but the food always a cut above the more ubiquitous venues ;)

Lovely place, dedicated staff, amazing food... not so kind on the wallet though! This is the place to bring your special one in a special occasion, but make sure to book, as it can get quite busy. They have some fancy wines and fancy food (it comes in small portions), so I guess it's good also if you're feeling a bit experimental.

Yo ido hace algunas noches.

As always the setting was lovely and the staff very friendly. Put in a corner table which was a bit of a squeeze but fine. Starters were very good particularly the celeriac soup. We were a party of four and each couple ordered a sharing platter, one seafood and the other various meats. We have had these several times in the past and unfortunately they were not as good as previously, both in quality and quantity. Wine selection was good if slightly pricy.

Comida maravillosa aquí, me encantó mi vegetariano haggis.

Friends recommended we try The Ubiquitous Chip and we weren't disappointed. We ate in the Brasserie upstairs; the mezzanine is very pretty and has a jovial atmosphere. The staff are very attentive and really know their stuff - our Sommelier recommended the perfect wine to compliment our selected dishes. We had the venison haggis to start - it was delicious, perfectly seasoned and came with a lovely, buttery whiskey sauce - then followed it with a beautifully balanced pigeon dish featuring smoked potatoes and hazelnuts. Dessert was a yummy peanut butter parfait and a luxurious rice pudding. We had a great night at The Chip; it was the perfect way to start our Glasgow adventure and we'll definitely make a return visit next time we're here!

This restaurant is a highly acclaimed , well known establishment in Glasgow. Maybe it was just my family , but we were all slightly disappointed. The mussels were good but we felt the venison haggis was overpowering , with under seasoned neeps and tatties.Peanut parfait was pleasant .Service was friendly and prompt.

Seeking Sunday lunch in Glasgow before returning to London we ploughed countless menus online and just couldn't get inspired. We said 'oh well let's just go back to the Ubiquitous Chip' - against our normal rule of not repeating restaurants when there are so many new experiences to be had in other places. This time it was the Brasserie though, having done the restaurant several years before on another trip up north. The Brasserie shone as much as we remembered the restaurant shining! When ordering the haggis we felt the whiskey sauce to accompany it might be a hard sell ... But thank god we were sucked into it .....mmmmmmmmm just heaven. Would recommend this establishment (and the haggis) to every single person visiting Glasgow. Might plan my next trip back AND break the rule and go again!!! Superb......

We loved this place. The waiter we had was a star, and introduced me to Rock Rose gin - he was knowledgeable on all of their wide selectionMy venison haggis with neeps and tatties was a greats starter, and the pork belly was as good as I've had anywhere. I finished with the rice pudding - very, very different from the one I make - not as sweet, but beautifully done. We'll return there on our next visit to Glasgow

My husband and I ordered several small plates. Everything was delicious and presented beautifully. I especially loved the venison haggis and the pork belly. The soup was also delicious. The wait staff was very hospitable and answered any questions we had with grace. If you've never had haggis, I would definitely suggest trying it here. Enjoy!

This place was the best. I arrived well before my booking time and they were very accommodating. Got a quick whiskey tasting lesson with my lowland flight. Ordered the vegetarian haggis with the whiskey sauce and it was delicious. I also had the Highland Crowdie cheesecake and it was also great. The staff was very friendly and the place is pretty. I recommend it!

Offering both small (similar to tapas style) and larger portions is a great idea and I think more places should do it! Plus, you can save room for dessert if you have a smaller portion of dinner! I had the very Scottish venison haggis with whiskey sauce (yum!) and a friend had a very tender and delicious pork belly. The deconstructed cheesecake I had for dessert was also equally fantastic. Plus, the atmosphere is great, like one big greenhouse, and the staff is very friendly.

Friday night in the ''Chip'' and it is heaving, only booked the night before but they squeezed us in at 8:45pm. It was really busy but the service was good considering. We had brought our drinks in from the bar, as we waited there until our 8:45 time slot, but that isn't a big problem as the bar is buzzing and has such a great atmosphere. Anyway the girls shared a starter of Pastillia? The guys had two Wee mussels to start. The mussels were fantastic, it was a starter portion but lots of them and a great sauce with 2 big chunks of crusty bread. I would say they were worth the money. I had a Wee meat filled Cannelloni on a bed of green beans and peas, it was so, so. My friend had the Big Haggis Tatties and Neeps with the whisky sauce, he said it was superb, but couldn't finish it as there was too much. My wife had the Salmon on a bed of shrimps which she thought was a bit overdone. If you want veg you have to order that on top of course. It was £98 for four with a bottle of wine, a glass of white wine and pint of lager. It was OK but not enough choice for me, I only fancied a couple of things. We retired to the bar and didn't leave till closing time at 1am so it was a good night taking everything in to consideration.

I love the upstairs because no matter the weather it's a magical place to be. We had a short window to grab a bite to eat and thankfully we were served within this window in a very relaxed way but also meant there was no anxiety on our part to get fed and the bill and out. Food is always good. The staff are really sweet. Only point of improvement is that I asked for a glass of champagne but was told it's not served by the glass they could offer cava which I reluctantly agreed to only to find on their menu they offer two appertifs and one being a glass of champagne. To add to that they brought Prosecco and had to be told few times the order was for Cava... Anyway this is small thing but equally shouldn't really happen.

I hadnt been here for over twenty years so arrived with a visiting friend from London. nice service , attentive, pleasant. However the crunch is the food. The menu was rather limited. Three choices on each course - though this was the pre theatre menu. A complimentary starter of essentially some cold garden peas with a foam on top. Didnt really taste of anything. The hake was essentially a square of fish with some green vegetables. again not really seasoned and again just really bland. Main course was salted beetroot with feta and spring onions. Even the feta for all its blandness judt didnt taste of anything nor particularly go well and the beetroot were so small they were almost hidden behind a spring onion. Dessert was a white chocolate with creme something. Again two lumps of cold creamy stuff - one frozen and one not frozen - beautifully presented but I have really had better tasting yogurts. Our vegan guest having enjoyed his vegan meal wasnt able to have a coffee as there was no milk alternative. Bit short sighted when they offered an entire vegan menu. I am sorry to say massively unimpressive. I cant honestly say I have had a more bland or tasteless meal. £200 for six people and this was the cheaper menu. I realise its a bit of a Glasgow institution but if you want a reasonable amount to eat of falour some food I would try elsewhere ,

Lovely atmosphere if you can get a table in mezzanine level amongst the plants but book early. Food is good and service too even during busy graduation schedule. Lots of places nearby for aperitifs and walk in nearby botanical gardens afterwards maybe - it's light until near 11pm just now!

I tried their Haggis Neeps and Tatties with the whisky sauce and it was excellent. The portion was too big for me, so, unfortunately, I didn't taste one of the desserts. I think it is a really nice restaurant in what it seems like an old greenhouse. The service was good. I would definitely recommend it.

Visited for the first time for a pre concert meal. Meal was nice - the starters (lamb and cannelloni) probably better than the venison and sea bass mains. The veg side of broccoli and cauliflower was very dry though the chips were great. The waiting staff were very friendly but overall service was slow. On balance we enjoyed our meal but wouldn't rush back.

Restaurant was recommended to us before we set off for a holiday in Glasgow but we decided to go to the brasserie upstairs instead. The ambience was lively and the food was excellent, Scottish flavours beautifully presented and plenty of it, the wee portion of mussels was huge and the chips were perfect. Service was a tad slow, they were very busy, but didn't affect our enjoyment of the meal. Ubiquitous Chip is just round the corner from Hillhead subway station so easy to get to from the city centre. This is a must do experience for visitors to Glasgow. If I lived here I'd be a regular.

Great find - best coffee I've had in Glasgow - they really know what they are doing here with the coffee. I've tried many rated coffee shops and this surpasses all by quite a way. The offered pastries were also very good. A must visit in Glasgow - you will not be disappointed..

The Brel in Ashton Lane in Glasgow is a place that strikes you first and foremost for its atmosphere. Located in one of the most particular streets of the city, it offers a welcoming and refined environment, perfect for a relaxing evening in company. Prices are average, especially considering the area. Overall the experience is worth it.
