I was very disappointed to discover that my gift voucher had expired after 6 months and a good friend’s generous £50 gift went to waste. I’d hoped the restaurant would show some good will. The manager apologised, shrugged her shoulders but showed no desire to help. I’d expect at least 1 year validity on a gift voucher and feel that it’s quite underhand to profit this way. We took our custom elsewhere and would be delighted to recommend the service and food at Mara, whose vouchers, incidentally, do have 1 year validity.

Went with three friends on a Friday night. The food was excellent and service was friendly and quick. The beef bourguignon was gorgeous and an enormous plateful. Everyone else enjoyed their different dishes also. We had shared the hummus for starters which was also very good. Unfortunately no-one could manage a starter. Strong recommend.

Came for Sunday lunch and had the roast beef, meat was cooked to absolute perfection, so tender. All the trimmings including crispy roastie, a giant Yorkshire pudding and delicious gravy, the best roast I've had for a long time. Excellent value for money. Service was quick and non intrusive. 10/10 all round.

I have walked past this restaurant many times on my way to mcnastys next door and finally decided to go in. The place is very cool inside. Very modern. Very chic. You could come here for just drinks if you wanted. I'd call this a lounge and a restaurant personally. Food was good and so was service. The menu isn't massive so unless you like the tried and trusted dishes, you might struggle. Modern Scottish cuisine I think is my classification of the food served here.

Another visit to one of my favourite restaurants in Aberdeen. New menu to try so we gave it ago. Never a disappointment. The food was its usual high standard. As always compliments to the brilliant chef. Due to the lovely weather we were sat at the open window, just a memorable dining experience. Our waitress today was Rachel. Thank you Rachel. She was very polite, and attentive without being in our face. She was very knowledgeable about the food. Explaining what she was serving to us. She helped make our lunch so enjoyable. Again a highly recommended dining experience. I would say to anyone to try The Braided Fig.

Waked in with a booking and was seated at a table in a tight corner when other tables were empty as there was only two couples in the place. It felt like we were put n the naughty corner. We booked a table after looking at the menu on the restaurant website.we were handed a menu and were told that a couple of things were not available from the menu as they are in the process of changing the menu. On looking at the menu we noticed that the things that were on the online menu that drew us into booking were missing ie fish, scampi, duck breast pretty staple dishes in any Aberdeen restaurant. At this point we decided that there was nothing on the menu that appealed to us. The waitress arrived at our table with the drinks order and we questioned her about the menu and were told that the online menu is just a sample menu. Well it is one of the most varied sample menus I have seen. We told her that there was nothing that appealed to us and that we would be leaving. As we got up to leave she stepped across my wife as if to block her and rather rudely said “well Madam you will have to pay for the drinks ordered” to which my wife told her the drinks were ordered on the pretence of having food and we were not going to sit there and drink with no food. My wife had to squeeze past her to leave. On the way out I noticed that they have a big board at the entrance displaying the very menu that we were looking at the night before. Surely this is getting customers to come in to the restaurant under false pretences. If you are going to change a menu then you need to withdraw the old one first. First time we have been there and it will be the last. Not a good experience 1 star awarded only because it won’t allow me to post with none!!!!!

It was very quiet for a Saturday night, but Union Street was also quiet. The food and service was spectacular. First time I had eaten here and was pleasantly surprised. The presentation to the variety on the menu was what you would expect in a top restaurant. Each plate that the food was served on was picked for the food that was laid on it. The menu choice was varied and catered for everyone. Fully recommended 👌.

We dined here on a Thursday night. The restaurant was very quiet which was a shame as the food and service was brilliant. Our waitress explained the menu to us and talked us through the dishes when they arrived too. Due to a changeover of menu there were a few dishes not available and also worth noting that the online menu was different to the menu that is served. For starter we had the Korean chicken and red, white, black and haggis puddings. Both delicious big portions and lots of flavour. The steak frites was so tender and the wontons were amazing. Really big portions. Staff went out of there way for you and were so attentive. Will definitely be back

We stopped off here whilst visiting Aberdeen to see a show. We chose this restaurant based on their online menu and the one outside the restaurant as we wanted somewhere that could give options for both ourselves as meat eaters and our friends that are veggie and vegan. The restaurant was very quiet when we got there and we were quickly seated. The decor is lovely and the fig tree in the middle of the restaurant was interesting. However the first disappointment was that the restaurant menu was nothing like we had looked at online/outside and offered very little choice for our friends and that as they were changing from an off to a peak season menu several of the choices were not available. Most of the meals did not come with any side dishes , with things like veg or chips having to be ordered as extras. We had a very long wait for our meals to come, which we could not understand as there was hardly any diners there . They also seemed to be very over staffed with 5 staff standing around the bar chatting most of the time we were there . Meals were ok , but nothing special , and the pie that I had was was so scalding hot it had lost all its taste and I had to wait 10 minutes before it was cool enough to even try to eat. We ordered dessert but had to ask them to serve it quickly or we would be late for the show , ( we had already been there 1.5 hrs ) but they made a real fuss about having to ask the chef if he could do this. Would have really liked to have given this restaurant a better review but think they need to think about the menu they offer, make sure they keep it updated everywhere and improve service and wait time

This was my first visit and I was delighted that they served one of my favourites, scallops. I would have liked them more caramelized and a tad warmer but I enjoyed them none the less. My sea bass main was lovely and very enjoyable. I am always disappointed with the sweet menu nowadays, as they always seem to have the same, brownies, sorbets etc. The staff although young were excellent, attentive without being intrusive. I wasn't very happy with our table as we seemed to stick out parallel with the front door and I was quite cold. My companions really liked the coeliac and vegetarian menus. We visited as a family of 7 … 4 Adults 3 children. On entering the restaurant it has the “braided fig” tree as a centre piece which sets the scene of a smart but not pretentious restaurant. The service was great, attentive and helpful. We got drinks and ordered the food. As requested the children got their food out first and it was not only delicious but you could tell it was quality. There was then the potential of an issue that the adult mains were taking a while HOWEVER, after asking the question they duly came … and to refer to the heading … my goodness it was worth the wait .. 2 roast dinners 2 x chicken pies. This food was clearly freshly prepared and delicious doesn’t do it justice… The Braided fig is off Union St and it is absolutely worth searching out if you want an a meal that will send your tastebuds into a frenzy !

We enjoyed three courses to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant we both felt lacked atmosphere it was not busy on a Friday night and all the customers were seated together in the same section. Allergies well catered for without fuss and as the menus are printed on paper, the dishes that were suitable for me were clearly indicated. Good selection of wines although some were on the pricey side. The only real negative - the place was very cold! All of the waiting staff were efficient and friendly. Service charge is added on but you do have the option to remove it.

Lack of vegetables and salad options, seemed like the Chef was happy we didn’t order desserts so he didn’t have to prepare them. Menu options were confusing and not explained. Copy of the email below I sent to the restaurant ( 8th Dec 23), sent a reminder... No reply back. hello, I thought would like to highlight how our meal went on Friday. we had a table booked with 21 guests on Friday at 15.30, we turned up on time but the tables were not ready, some people left and went next door for a drink while others waited. we came back approx 20 mins and still waiting for a table, eventually at 16.45 we were all seated. as our food choices were selected prior to the day it would be quick service, far from it. approx 30 mins for the starters to arrive and then another big wait for the mains approx 30 to 40 mins , the meal was nice but everybody potatoes were cremated and there were not a lot of vegetables. then finally desert this was the biggest wait at least 45 mins, we also ordered Irish coffees and some liquors for the tables of which never turned up, at the end of the meal we checked the receipt and were charged for them. I did speak with the bar person and refund was given back for twenty pounds all in all it was about 20.00 before we left the restaurant for a table booked at 15.30. I am not speaking on behalf of the company but as an individual who paid to have a Christmas meal, with the delay of table, the time to be served, potatoes not eatable, charged for drinks we never got ill leave it to you how you think it went prior to me writing reviews on forums.

We visited The Braided Fig as part of Aberdeen Restaurant Week. The menu offering compared to some of the other venues taking part seemed one of the best. We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and were told that it would be a bit of a wait until we could order our food. I thought this was odd and a bit concerning that they were somewhat unwilling to accommodate early dinners. Anyway, they said that we could have a drink while we wait, which was fine. That said, it took them almost 15 minutes after sitting down to offer a drink. When we were eventually given the menu, everything sounded tasty. We asked if we could order our desserts after our main meal, which I understand to be standard procedure, and were told we had to order everything at once. Again, I found this odd and a bit awkward for the sake of it. The food was good and tasted very nice, and I had no complaints really. A small point to note is that it was disappointing that that the Chicken "K.F.C" starter was clearly frozen chicken fillets as opposed to home made fried chicken. Also, again I was a bit disappointed that the burger was not home made, which you could tell from the taste. The service was so-so, some of the servers were more on the ball that others. The wait between courses was a tad too long. We were in there for around 2.5 hours and didn't ever request a break between courses. In terms of the restaurant itself, I am of the view that it could do with a freshen up in decor. I remember visiting here probably over 10+ years ago and recall the place looking the same. My partner thought the same and he has never been before. Would I visit The Braided Fig again? Yes, but not in a rush. I think it is in a prime location, with overall good quality food. I think with a freshen up on the decor and some further staff training it would really be a fantastic venue.

Have visited many times for dinner /lunch so had high expectations of a social xmas lunch with friends. As a group of 26 who had pre booked our menu it was a surprise that we waited an hour for our starter. It was also a surprise that the staff apparently were aware how cold the premises are!!!!. Many in our party were unable to take their coats/hats off throughout due to the temperature. There is one radiator visible , but we were told the building is a cold one and difficult to heat. The food once it arrived was variable. The beef for which a supplement was paid I am told was brilliant; The turkey was apparently lovely and certainly was a huge portion but the vegetarian option , celeriac, although pleasant , was not particularly exciting and as a main course was unacceptable ( some grated carrot in a dressing with a gungy sauce . a miniscule scraping of apple accompanying maybe 5 small slices of celeriac. .where was the trimmings that went with everyone else's meal???? ) The puddings were all lovely. The staff were all lovely but.............as lovely as they all were , appeared to have little training? One waitress when asked about the soup had no knowledge what it was(she had had one hour to find out what she was serving???) when coffee/tea came the distribution was extremely haphazard..as a former waitress I appreciate it is hard to negotiate older/deafer/ and large groups where alcohol is involved but as a non drinker in the group I did feel that by coffee I had given up, as had the staff who seemed to have little interest in whether tea/ coffee was delivered; the young lady serving my husband and I seemed reluctant to actually pour any into our cups. Overall it wasn't the worst service/meal I've ever had , but there is definitely room for improvement which is why I have written this review as constructive(hopefully) criticism because the staff were all very smiley and lovely and will hopefully continue to be.

We went down for restaurant month, and was giving a choice 3 course £25 or 5 course for £30. The 5 course contains alcohol without alternative. There timing we're all over the place, mostly waiting 25mins between courses. We arrived at 7:30pm and left at 9:30pm. They put a Service Charge on the bill of 10% which is frowned upon in Aberdeen. Normally you would give a tip if you think the service is good or not. The men's toilet was broken and I had to used the disabled toilets instead. This looked like it was used for storage and didn't feel like they used this toilet seriously. Food: Starters Bread with chicken butter Crab on toasted bread The choice to use sour dough bread twice felt like eating half a loaf of bread, I would consider this poor choice. The Crab paste used was too little Main roast chicken The roast chicken was consider well cooked and would consider this a 4/5 for tastiness unfortunately the presentation was lacking. Intermediate The gin sorbet Can't comment, was driving afterwards and contains alcohol, there was no alternative. Desert Lemon tart The lemon zesty was correct, but unfortunately the amount given was far less than acceptable for a Desert. Overall I was left hungry, annoyed, and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone until they change there attitude of this restaurant.

Mixed experience of dining here at Sunday lunchtime (1pm). Arrived to a very quiet restaurant , and seated very close to another table despite there only being 3 tables full in the restaurant at the time. No background music so atmosphere was very quiet and intense, until someone remembered to put the music on! Pros: •Food was amazing. Couldn’t fault it. As good as photos show and more! •Service was very good. Friendly, attentive staff Cons: •Menu not what is shown on website, which for someone who likes to plan their food ahead, was disappointing. •No drinks menu … at all! Had to ask what options were for soft drinks and got listed the usual coke, Diet Coke, lemonade etc… but would prefer a drinks menu to consult •Food took about 20-25 mins to come out, which given there were only 1/2 other tables waiting for food at the same time, seems a little lengthy to me All in all a good experience, but could be improved!

Oh dear! I went here with friends for my birthday and the food was lovely so I decided to book a big family meal here for November. The booking was problematic from the start as they wouldn't give us a 7pm or 7:30pm time as group bookings can't be taken then due to the kitchen being busy! I called back to secure a later time, despite the fact that this was more difficult for us, and was then told they couldn't necessarily seat us together as it would depend on how they decided to lay out the restaurant on the day!! I requested that we were seated together regardless of where in the restaurant that might be but they wouldn't guarantee that. Clearly business must be booming there if they can put so many hurdles in the way of a 15 person booking. I wanted to support local...obviously The Braided Fig don't need it! Update to reply below A prompt response albeit mostly inaccurate. I could have posted the reservation confirmation but why bother? Ultimately, this reply says everything potential customers need to know about the experience on offer. When requesting a 7pm slot and asking that my family are seated together for a birthday celebration makes me a difficult person and becomes "not getting my own way" I think it's fair to say that customer experience is not a priority here.

Lovely Yorkshire pud and a little extra pot of their gravy which was perfect. Tasty veg - glazed carrots, broccoli and cauliflower so quite a plate of food. Perfectly presented on warmed plates by our friendly and knowledgeable server. Really can’t fault it and I’ll be back here very soon to try the rest of the menu which also looks superb. What a little gem of a restaurant - superb service from Calum (thank you Calum) and superb food. We recommend the Cullen skink, the scampi and the Braided Fig burger 👍

Booked for Father’s Day lunch, lovely relaxed atmosphere. No hurry to order or to then finish our meal. Food was delicious and made as orders went into kitchen (which meant a bit of a wait BUT worth waiting for!) Well worth a visit

Always liked this place, simple tasty menus. First time back since Covid, the style is the same, we were told that service might be slow as they were short of staff on the kitchen, as we were there to catch up with friends this wasn't an issue. We had a great meal out, although my panko Scampi (langoustine tail) was too dry - perhaps held in the warmer while the other meals were prepared? The others were delighted with their meals. We didn't think the service was slow but then we were there for the conversation. Only 3 or 4 other tables that night. I'd recommend this place, Enjoy.

I have dined at The Braided Fig several times over the years however hadn’t been for a few years. I chose to dine here on my birthday with friends as it has consistently been a nice place for a drink with good food and a nice atmosphere. However on this occasion I was left very disappointed with both the food and the service. We were a table of 11 people with a booking for 6pm - all of us were seated and awaiting one individual who hadn’t yet arrived at 6:10. We were approached by staff who asked where the other person was and they were assured the individual was on their way and would arrive in the next couple of minutes. This staff member proceeded to state that I should tell them to “hurry up” as if they weren’t there within the next 5 minutes then we would risk losing our table and not being served due to “clashing with other tables” (…there were no other occupied tables in the restaurant at the time). I was aware of this 15 minute rule which was presented to me after I had booked the table within their “terms and conditions”, and I can appreciate the need to have these in place to ensure a business can run smoothly. However, the way in which it was approached and the tone we were spoken to in was not, in my opinion, acceptable - especially given it was only one person we were waiting for, and we were a large group willing to provide them our custom. I have dined in most restaurants in Aberdeen and a variety of restaurants throughout my life and I have never been presented with such a bizarre requirement. The experience overall after that was pleasant enough, we were served by a selection of the waiting staff who were friendly and had good customer service. We did however wait a particularly long time for our food - which was quite ironic given we were told to hurry up at the beginning - and made even more damning by the fact that all our food was overcooked. I ordered the lamb and while the presentation and dish itself was nice, it was let down by the severely overcooked lamb which ruined the dish. The starter (bruschetta) was just ok. The best part of my meal was the wine. At the end of our meal, my friend actually had to approach the bar staff to ask for the bill which again was quite odd given we were essentially told to hurry up and order from the get go when we first sat down. This experience definitely tarnished my views of The Braided Fig and I won’t be returning. It is unfortunate that one member of staff approached our table in the way she did. This is clearly detrimental to the custom this restaurant will receive in future given all 11 of our table would not return! Hugely disappointing for a once much-loved local restaurant.

I had delicious crispy langoustines which was served with lovely tartar sauce. The waitresses were lovely and attentive. Policies far too strict and makes for an unwelcoming vibe. We were a table of 10, dining at 6pm when the restaurant was completely empty. At 10...

Food was great when it eventually came but the service let it down. We (a table of 3) waited more than an hour between starter and main. We'd clearly been forgotten about as we watched tables come in after us and be served. And when we asked, we were fobbed off with "we're really busy" (they weren't). Own up to mistakes and don't patronise your customers.

The food was delicious, and the staff were lovely, but the service was extremely slow. I’m not sure if it was because it was busy or if the kitchen was understaffed but it took 1.5 hours between finishing our starters and getting our mains. We...

Went in with my colleague for Lunch about 1pm, the atmosphere was colorful, nice and quiet. But unfortunately most of the things in the menu wasn't available. Its quite sad as you would think the Manager or Chef would know what is and isn't available before one makes an order and hoping the food comes, only to be told apologies 😀 We just had drinks and left.

Lovely place. We arrived just after opening & settled in a comfy chair for a coffee & a perusal of the menu. The kitchen opens at 12, so a nice coffee to take the chill off on a dreich Aberdeen morning was just the ticket. Lunch was lovely. Our dishes were Black Mac & Langoustine Scampi. If I'm honest, I'm not sure the addition of the black pudding added anything to the delicious macaroni cheese, but the pancetta was nice with it. My husbands only complaint was that his meal was served in little baskets on a wooden board! His exclamation of Oh no, it's on a board! was met very politely by our waiter immediately offering to put the meal on a plate. With a, now, happy husband, the meal was eaten without further delay. He loved the tartar sauce & the lemon in a muslin bag. My only real complaint (its not a biggie either) was that the only decaf coffee they had was instant, so a bit of a shame, but hopefully they can look into that & next time it won't be. All in All a nice experience. We will definitely be back.
