Nice atmosphere, busy without appearing too crowded. Service was friendly and the menu was interesting as well as being reasonably priced. A good addition to the Barbican. We look forward to our next visit. The second visit was as good as the first. Not a huge vegetarian selection on a new menu, but good nonetheless. February 2023, still a good spot for lunch, although the veggie offering hasn't really increased. The staff are really welcoming, friendly and helpful, a feature which I think is a defining feature of this popular bar-café-restaurant.

We went to The Bottling Plant as a family and shared 3 platters; 2 ploughman's and 1 charcuterie. These consisted of lots of meat, some pâté, cheddar, brie, blue cheese, pork pie, bread, chutney, chilli jam and crackers, plus a few other bits I've forgotten. These 3 platters were a good amount for 6 of us The food was good and everyone enjoyed it. The reason I rated the food 4 stars is my personal reflection of the main menu. Looking at the options I wasn't sure what I would pick if I went in there for a main meal, to the point where I personally probably wouldn't choose to eat there based on that menu. I just felt there weren't any options that I would like. When you look at the dessert menu, 3 of the desserts are chocolate based and 2 of those options contain orange gel. I just feel that, although I agree with using certain elements more than once across a menu, it did leave me thinking that the dessert options were limited. I will say that we did end up ordering all 3 of the chocolate dessert options and we all enjoyed what we had. In terms of service I will say that the staff were all friendly and polite. However, at one point a waitress asked us for orders, but didn't bring a pad, so had to leave the table for that and ask us again. We also ordered teas with our desserts which I had to follow up on to receive. In conclusion I will say have a look at the main menu before you decide to go. I'm not saying the options are bad, I'm just saying I personally didn't see many exciting options for me. The sharing platters are enjoyable and worth it, and overall the service was good. I would go again and would most likely go for nibbles or a platter.

We visited Plymouth with our family for a university open day for our daughter. We arrived early on Friday and enjoyed a lovely tapas meal near the Hoe. After spending the day at the university and exploring, we walked past a restaurant that caught our eye and decided to book a table for dinner. We made our reservation a few hours in advance and arrived two minutes before our booking. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a rather unfriendly hostess who showed us to our table. We assumed she was busy and joked that she probably wished we weren’t there. A different waitress soon came over, greeted us politely, offered water for the table, and handed us the menus. So far, so good. However, when the original hostess returned to take our order, her demeanor was cold and unfriendly. Both of our children even commented on her negative attitude after she left. Our meals arrived promptly: we ordered two venison burgers, a steak, and a duck breast. The burgers were decent, but my daughter found her duck and chips overly salty, and my wife had the same issue with her steak. When I asked if they were edible, my daughter said she’d try to manage but had to scrape salt off each chip. My wife, on the other hand, couldn’t eat her meal—it was just too salty. When the waitress returned to check on us, my wife explained that her meal was inedible, leaving most of it untouched. The waitress went to get the manager, who turned out to be the same unfriendly lady who greeted us. The manager spoke briefly with my wife and offered her a glass of Prosecco but made it clear there would be no replacement meal. I questioned whether it was fair to pay for a meal that couldn’t be eaten, to which she replied that it was beyond her pay grade and called for the actual manager. I followed her to continue the conversation away from the dining area. At that point, another woman came out of the kitchen without introducing herself. When I asked if she was the manager, she stated she was the owner and that we had indeed been dealing with the manager. I pointed out the earlier claim that the manager wasn’t at the appropriate level to resolve the issue. We returned to the table to discuss further, where it became clear they were unwilling to accept any fault. They tried to make us feel guilty by mentioning their status as a small business and boasted about their awards for consistent quality, though I couldn’t find any evidence of these claims online. They refused to acknowledge the steak was over-seasoned, stating that the chef had checked it by cutting into various parts. When I pointed out the excessive salt on the other dishes, they claimed it was from the serving cups used during plating—a point we contested since the salt had been scraped off the food itself. They then said the steak had a miso jus, which is naturally salty, even though the menu clearly mentioned tarragon sauce, not miso. In the end, we paid for all meals except the one that was barely touched and left. My wife ended up buying a ham and cheese sandwich from Tesco on our way back to our accommodation. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Despite dining out frequently and eating at restaurants worldwide, this was the first time we felt compelled to reject a meal. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant.

I went there Saturday evening with a friend and family who were visiting Plymouth.I have been there a few times before, so I knew all would be well. I wanted to take them to the iconic Barbican for a good meal in the top eatery. No steps here, so good for elderly, excellent service throughput especially by Kate and Lia(Portuguese lady, sorry about Spelling) We had ribeye steaks, duck brest, and cod(duck a little tough,(experience has taught me to avoid that one) But rest excellent, followed by lovely dessert. It's hard to pigeonhole this restaurant. It's part wine bar part bistro, but 100% quirkey, From convex mirrors and stopcock pipe toilet roll holders in loos to copies of famous pictures on walls. And all types of furniture from leather sofas to banquet tables. But it all comes together wonderfully. I would recommend this establishment to Janners like me and visitors alike.

This rather unusual eclectic bar ought to have 5 stars if it wasn't for the ridiculous wait for drinks. It has a quirky feel to it, which lends itself to private seating arrangements that make for a cool vibe. The drinks selection is reasonable, and the whole atmosphere is sophisticated, albeit jaunty. Where it fails to deliver is the ordering of drinks. Whilst I can understand what they are trying to achieve, the reality is that it can take an inordinate amount of time (25 mins for us) from the time of purchasing a drink, to it actually arriving. Regardless of how busy a bar is, that simply is unacceptable, and put us off ordering more drinks.

Disappointing service. A great place, with plenty of staff but poor systems. We just wanted a quick drink. We didn’t were told to sit down, they brought us menus so we assumed it was table service, after waiting we enquired to be told we have to go to the bar. So I did, but apparently I went to the wrong side so I hade to join a que the other side. We then had to wait ages for our drinks. All this time there was a lot of staff standing around doing nothing. For £6.95 a pint I would expect better, especially when there is more than enough staff to enable a customer to feel appreciated

Booked in here having read some good reviews and have been previously for drinks and cake. The staff were very nice but lacking in knowledge about the dishes. We ordered a smoked pear and blue cheese salad, a ploughman’s sharing platter, some roasted potato fingers and some local specialty bread and butters. The salad had a pear, not smoked, diced into it, very little cheese, no salad dressing on it or offered, no pumpkin seeds as advertised and was more like a starter portion. The ploughman’s board was incredibly bland, very poorly prepped coleslaw with big pieces of unsliced cabbage and red onion with the skin on, cheery tomatoes straight from the fridge and tasted of nothing, at over £30 for this board we expected far better quality produce and some interesting flavours. The roast potato fingers were deep fried fat chips, hot but absolutely not roasted! At over £5 for the bread, i was appalled to have two small slices of brown bread and then enough butter for a whole lot more, if you were running short just say and charge accordingly! The wine was very nice and the ambience also but the food was a huge disappointment. We did not make a fuss at the time as we did not want to spoil the atmosphere of our family get together. All in all the food appeared to have been prepared by untrained hands and did not in any way represent value for money. Big fur coat and no knickers is a phrase to describe our meal.

A very poor experience. While the food was ok, the service was just awful. We ordered drinks and food and while the food arrived in about 30 or 40 minutes, they completely forgot our drink order. The young man who took our order was always around, yet never asked if we were ok when we were waiting. We wanted to enjoy a couple of drinks before our meal, so when they didn’t arrive I wanted to ask for them to take the food back and bring our drinks first, like you would expect in any decent eatery. I didn’t because the girl who brought our food seemed very apologetic, so I thought she’d rectify their mistake and try to make it up to us. She didn’t. She simply said “that’s not a problem, I’ll get them done now”. Well, for us it was a problem, she should’ve asked. When we said that we will not be having drinks anymore, she pushed us having them and we had to be rather firm about refusing and getting them off our bill. Should you have considered your customers, and maybe offered those drinks free as a compensation for the wait, upset, and your staff messing up, you would not have lost a couple of customers. The food was ok, but not good enough to put up with such poor service and disregard.

While we typically enjoy our visits to The Bottling Plant, our outing last night was ruined over a very simple understanding about a drinks order. My partner had ordered an alcoholic cocktail for herself (which she ended up getting two of as part of the Saturday deal, which she did not ask for as she doesn't drink much) and a non-alcoholic one for me as I was driving. After finishing our drinks, we reviewed the prices and realised we had been overcharged as I had actually received the alcoholic version of the drink and hadn't realised as it was quite sweet. When my partner clarified with the staff member who served her that this wasn't what she originally ordered, she tried to rebuke her and adamantly state that it was. This staff member then refunded "the most expensive drink" (which was redundant as the drinks we had been served were the same price) and then ended up taking away the second drink my partner had yet to touch. This was not what was agreed but again, they were adamant it was and even claimed to have CCTV to show us that proved them right. I feel this was just said to get us to leave without further challenging them for their mistakes. The tone that this staff member used also made my partner very upset, as she was cordial and polite throughout this entire ordeal whereas they were very rude and dismissive. It is a shame as this venue does have a good atmosphere with a nice selection of drinks, but we cannot recommend it in good conscience due to the actions of one rude staff member.

It was about 7:30-45 we were seated, they brought the drinks at 8pm starters arrived at 8:10 and main dishes 8:40. I didn’t want to have my drink in my empty stomach and buy that time my beer was already warm and not pleasant to drink. Also my husband, who ordered fish, asked for a bread and it took them another 10-15min to bring the bread( they said it’s still in the oven). Comparing prices, food quality and service I would say that this place is unreasonable overpriced.

Lovely place, came here for cocktails originally which are tasty and 2 for £12.50 before 7 then decided to stay for dinner. Great service lovely starters, shame about the duck being tough and hard to cut through. There was an issue with my main too but that got sent back and remade. Owners are pleasant to chat to and make you feel welcome.

Great vegan options!!! Vegan curry was an interesting twist it was cold but very refreshing. Vegan share plater was very filling lots of flavorful bits. My boyfriend also tried the mules he said they were very tasty. Staff super friendly and accommodating

£5 for a 1/3 of a cup of mulled wine that tasted like hot orange juice with a shot of wine (if that)

Nice place, but when arriving at 10pm we were told it was last orders and they were closing? Surely open for another hour? Disappointing

Work Christmas party. First course very tasty, served at 7.30pm but main didn't arrive until 9.10pm and most of us were unfortunately dissapointed. Despite the wait, meals were not piping hot and meat dishes were bleeding and not rested. The pudding, served after 10pm was the best dish of the night but we were shocked at the time needed for the meal. Waiter was lovely but for a group our size we needed more staff as drinks, including tap water, took an hour to arrive. At £42 per person for our meal, we were unfortunately left dissapointed. Usual dining may well be better and it was certainly a full house downstairs but we felt a little forgotten about upstairs.

Visited without booking and luckily they had room for our group of 8, and there was plenty of variety on the menu to suit us all. I opted for the vegetarian stilton pasta, as I absolutely adore blue cheese. My husband chose the seafood pizza and we shared a side of nachos. We enjoyed our meals and the service was swift and friendly. Good options for vegetarians.

Have purchased from here several times - both the cake slices and celebration cakes. Most of the time the cakes are great - light and fluffy, but have been two occasions where the cake was too sweet and did not taste very fresh (seems more of an exception), but will still be purchasing nonetheless.

Very nice as usual, asked for my Korma to be hot and spicy but unfortunately it wasn't. Still very nice though.

Second visit after such nice meals the first time, I chose the carbonara as I had this on the first visit and really enjoyed . This time it was completely tasteless. My wife and daughters meals were very salty and my granddaughter’s spaghetti bolognaise was nothing like a bolognaise with hard carrots and crunchy celery! My granddaughter has a severe food allergy and we are always worried about eating out but as we had eaten here before, and she hadn’t been poorly we were happy that she would be safe. There was nothing suitable for her in the starters section so she chose to have a dessert instead as part of the set meal. Half way through she alerted me to the fact that she had a small piece of plastic in her sorbet. I was a little bit horrified but didn’t say anything and thought,,, these things can happen. After a couple more spoonfuls and a larger piece of plastic I told the waiter and he took it off me and apologised saying it must have been from the sorbet container. No gesture of goodwill offered, not that we would necessarily have accepted but not good service and certainly WONT be going back!
