The Blacks Head in Derbyshire Dales

Haven't been to the Black's Head for a couple of years. Went early this evening, lovely welcome, dog friendly. Will definitely go again.

Excellent little pub great atmosphere great for special events always a warm welcome they have some excellent live music on certain nights

We (a group of 18) stayed in Wirksworth for a weekend of walking in the Peak District and went for a night out at The Quarryman, and what a great night it turned out to be. The landlord and landlady, bar staff and locals were incredibly welcoming and the pub had a great atmosphere and played some great music. Thank you The Quarryman for giving us such a memorable night.

A very welcoming little town pub. Staff are very chatty and dogs are welcome. We didn’t have any food but they do cater for parties. Attended a little live music gig on Sunday night and the pub was packed. It had a great atmosphere and locals were very friendly.

We went in tonight for a quick pint with our dogs (one of which can be a bit ‘temperamental’). They were so welcoming and understanding, that combined with a good pint. We will certainly visit again during our stay (and again if in the area).

Popped in with a ten pound note after carols in the market place! Great welcome! Fully recommend! Lots of nice locals!

Really nice cozy pub, not huge but plenty of room to relax and have a nice pint. Very nice friendly staff which always makes a difference and in a lovely location. Top marks!

We always stop here for a drink and sit in the square. The pub itself is a wonderful little place with a cosy feel and a old world look. The beers are always well kept and the service is good.

British flag outside says it all, doesn't get much better inside I'm afraid. If a non British person or internationalist maybe steer clear if you know what I mean.

The "secret beer garden" out the back is the draw. Nice selection of beers to choose from, and the aforementioned beer garden (really a terrace) is sheltered and "cosy". Worth a visit.

Nice little pub catering for large groups Has a bit of an incline for anyone with walking difficulties but parking is nearby if required Nice beer garden but steps to it are dicey!

Quaint pub that will accommodate approx 24 people.... two outdoor patios ....one has a shade sail and the other is rooftop....frequent live entertainment ....local pork pies and sausage rolls for snacks ...clean toilets....dog friendly.....classic local English pub with ' regulars' ....management staff are welcoming and bar staff is friendly....

It's a cosy little pub that usually has nice bears on. The staff are super friendly and it's a good place to go as a couple or with a small group of friends. If there's lots of you though you'll need to go elsewhere as it is very small.

Had a drink here on the 24th October, really welcoming dog friendly pub. Great selection of beers and Gins. Really nice owners/landlords will visit again.

A fantastic friendly cosy pub in a beautiful part of the peak district. The beer is kept in top condition and from my visits there was a great selection of real ale available. A warm friendly genuine welcome awaits - dogs very welcome too. They offer food specials from time to time - but there are plans to extend the kitchen and offer regular meals.

Recently taken over by a new Landlord. This normally quiet venue is now buzzing. Although not a restaurant, they do provide hot snacks and special curry/chilli evenings. The food is good and publican friendly and helpful. A real "pub" small, but full of atmosphere.

We visited the Blacks Head for a drink nearly every night of our week long holiday while staying in Wirksworth. It has a lovely traditional pub atmosphere, with friendly bar staff and quality beer. There is a hidden outside roof terrace which was great in the summer's hot weather.

Quite a small pub located in the centre of town. Landlord was extremely welcoming and made us feel right at home. Great selection of beers (but no food) and a charming "secret" beer garden enjoying an elevated position and accessed by a flight of stairs to the rear of the building.

We popped in to the Blacks Head just after lunch and were given a lovely welcome by John, there were a fine selection of ales available, those that I tasted beautifully kept. The pub is under new management by John and Maggie and finer hosts you couldn’t wish for.

Regular visitor to this pub, when ever I am driving through Wirksworth. Fantastic selection of Ales and their selection of pork pies are the best I've had! Personally I have a Cider and a sausage roll that put Ginsters to shame. Recently has had a change in Lady and Lordship whom are very accommodating and make all feel very welcomed. 100% recommend a visit.

We went here several times during our short stay in Wirksworth. There's a new landlord who was very friendly, the ales were well kept and we enjoyed sitting in the beer garden.

This pub is set in one of the nicest old quaint towns in Derbyshire, Wirksworth. The welcome was friendly and it had everything you needed from a cozy pub, warmth, good beer and food. A really excellent establishment

Just at the end of a week in Wirksworth and this is a fantastic pub. Serves really well keep real ales landlady and the locals are really friendly. Speak to the locals and you will learn lots of history and social history about the area.

We popped in on our first night staying just up the road. It was a locals pub but we got a very warm welcome. Our dogs were welcomed too despite our grumpy old spaniel snapping at the pub dog! We returned for another beer the next night. Loved this pub.

A friend and myself turned up with our wives and five children, three of which were under 4.

A must visit in this area. The Landlord/Landlady have only been in since early December but you wouldn’t know it. The locals are welcoming and the beers are spot on. We will be back. Thanks to Steve & Tracey for making us feel welcome.

Great selection of beers, wines and spirits. Bar snacks rather than food service. This is a proper pub where old, young, rich, poor and all manner of people from all walks of life come together and create an ambience which is second to none

Perros donde puede estar con ellos en el bar o ir a la terraza al aire libre - es subiendo por las escaleras que están un poco empinada, así que no es fácil negociar si estás informar (o después de una pinta! ), pero es encantador, no te dejes engañar creyendo que es la mesa se puede ver desde el bar. Tienen una buena selección de cervezas con cervezas. Habíamos visitado en Halloween donde habían sacó todas las paradas y las cervezas eran deliciosos.

The minute we walked into this tiny pub, I knew that we would not be stopping long! Not only were we stared at with our dog, especially by an old guy who was glaring at me with total distaste, we were abruptly told to move away from the bar. Its such a tiny place, and obviously popular to have a pie with your pint, but in my honest opinion I think far too small to allow dogs in!! We were made to feel very uncomfortable and I would not go back there. My hubby drank his beer, which he wasn't that keen on, I drank half of mine and then we left! We walked up the hill to the Red Lion, and the minute I walked in I got smiles and hellos of everyone in there, so thats where we stayed. We stayed a week in Wirksworth and apart from that one bad experience we found the town lovely, with friendly and helpful people

Came in out of the cold after the chatsworth Xmas fair. Great beers and lots of locals in. 6 different real ales, local made pies anx snacks and a great publican. Would cone back.

nestled in the corner it can be hard to miss but after a long walk it was a nice pit stop, clean inside with a nice range of green king beers, friendly staff and nice historic building

We went into the pub as advised dogs welcome well quiet ones advised the landlord.. We went in and it did get quite busy for a Tuesday night. Lots of locals who seemed to know landlord and he knew the drinks they had...no pub food as such but rolls/scotch egg and pies... Hubby so keen on the beer old trip and had a speckled hen next not his favourite. Think a few more ales on offer be better.Good atmosphere. Watch the steep slope straight outside door with wet leaves could be lethal!

A very friendly local with a lively atmosphere and an excellent selection of real and guest ales at reasonable prices. In summer, the elevated back patio makes for an interesting terrace at roofscape level.In winter the pub is warm and cosy. Whenever I pop in for an early evening drink or when festival events are on in the town I always enjoy the atmosphere and well kept beers.

We drink here quite often as we sail locally it always has a wide choice of really good beers and a great atmosphere and a really quirky beer garden at the back well worth a visit

Great pub right on the market place, been there for the best part of 300 years so they must be doing something right! Food is basic but good, cobs pork pies etc. but 5 or 6 real ales on every day and a good selection of wine and whiskey's. If you're in Wordsworth pop in, it's worth it.

Best pub in Wirksworth based on an in-depth survey weekend just gone. Friendly landlord and locals, great beer. Was a treat to be able to dine on donners from the local kebab shop in the comfort of the beer garden. Highly recommended.

On a pub crawl , or as my wife would say , visiting the local pubs.This one was , what you say , real!. 6 real ales ,bit of a throw back to 80s, but sociable . Very good beer garden, one of the best pubs in town .

We tried this pub on local recommendation's. The bar is fairly small but nicely furnished.The landlord was welcoming, polite and helpful.We enjoyed a couple of beers sitting on the bench in front of the pub with a view over the village square and over to the surrounding hills. It's a long time since I sat on a bench and was able to swing my legs but what a great environment to do it in.Treat yourself to a drink.

Lovely pub we didn't eat here but only because we had made other plans. Very good atmosphere and had gluten free larger. Bar staff very helpful and a really good garden area to sit.

Sat on hidden terrace upstairs at back in full sunshine. Great location, good wine and beer, nice bar staff. Good old fashioned pub. No bells and whistles.

14 ladies decided to pay a visit and very pleased we did. Nice for afternoon drinks out the back on the decking in the sunshine.

A tiny pub squeezed up an alley in the little Derbyshire town of Wirksworth. Good range of real ales. But it's definitely a squash - not a place to relax and take it easy, but a real experience and the place to head for in Wirksworth !

Good beer range,welcoming locals, tasty bar snacks and dogs welcome.The Barmaid happily made someone a cup of tea as they were quiet a the time.We weren't there for quiz,live music or vinyl nigth but can imagine it would have been great.Wish it was our local despite being a bit pricey.

Stopped at this pub for a quick drink and a few nibbles after our 6.7 mile walk around the Derbyshire Dales. Nice location for a pub, with a friendly atmosphere. Drinks were very satisfying!

Good place for a traditional ale and conversation with locals. We sat in the beer garden on one of the last nice days of the summer. The ale was delicious and the people very nice. There is not really any food here - we went elsewhere for dinner.

We came here during a weekend stay in Wirksworth and would definitely recommend. The staff at the bar were friendly, as were the locals who we shared a table with. We didn't try the food, but my partner was a fan of the ales. It got quite busy on the Friday night, but there was room to stand - will definitely visit again if in the area.

The Blacks Head is a small but well appointed pub on Wirksworth Market Place. There are usually about 6 different real ales on, and not a bad one amongst them. I haven't tried the food, so it would not be fair of me to comment on that, but the beer, the atmosphere and the service are all top notch. Oh and the view from the front window isn't bad either.

We stopped here for a drink nearing the end of the Workswirth Art Festival so we could listen to the live music in the market place. They had hay bales outside to sit on and the American Pale Ale was really tasty, good nose, sharp and thirst quenching.Very busy but the staff worked well.

One of the friendliest and laid back pubs you'll find. Well positioned, excellent staff and landlord, very well kept and if you last visited during the time it was run by the old landlady, be sure to revisit, things are run right now by someone with experience and knowledge.

I must admit the Rosa Kleb comment made me chuckle.Fortunately the new landlord and the staff have totally changed the atmosphere and you will get a friendly welcome, served a great pint, and order a tasty pork pie.The pub is very clean, log burners keep it warm in the winter, and the garden is great in the summer.Perhaps a guest appearance by Rosa could be arranged to remind everyone how not to run a pub.

Visited whilst on holiday, on the recommendation of our hosts. Small pub with a secret garden. Good range of beer, and a friendly landlord. Enjoyed our evening so much we visited again before returning home.

The last few years were not kind to the Blacks Head. Visits were an ordeal courtesy of Rosa Klebb.Happily a new guy now runs it. He has done nothing spectacular except reintroduce food and be pleasant to people Food options - rolls/baps/cobs, pies sausage rolls. The Scotch egg is locally made and is so far removed from supermarket muck its untrue.Beer is much improved too. If you are walking around Wirksworth and need a break go to the Blacks Head

Popped in for drinks whilst waiting for the return journey on the Ecclestone Valley Railway. Spent a very pleasant couple of hours there!

An old style "drinkers" pub on the edge of the market place. A good place for a drink next to the log burner, but may be not a place for eating on a regular basis

I love this pub, it is so cozy and relaxed with a beer garden out the back. One of the great things is that they'll pull the beer through a sparkler, which most pubs in Wirksworth don't do. There's always a few beers on; it would be nice if there was more of a variety in types of beers, especially having a hoppier one on from time-to-time. It's my favourite pub in the town though.

We went to a number of pubs in Wirksworth and this was probably the most welcoming. Good ales, but cannot comment on food.

My partner and I were delighted to discover this little gem of a pub on a day out during our Derbyshire holiday with our 9 month old son. We were sat in the square outside with our lunch when the landlady offered for us to eat our sandwich in the pub. We were more than happy to do so and spent a lovely lunchtime in The Blacks Head. The landlady was so hospitable and the clientele very friendly. Our great thanks go to the landlady - it was truly the highlight of our day

I called here a couple of weeks ago, mainly for a pint with my brother in law. I was asking him and wondering if they did food here. Fortunately the friendly Landlady over heard me and we had a nice little chat. It appears she hasn't been here too long. At the moment there isn't any food to be had, but there are plenty of places for a sandwich in Wirksworth. The main reason for a pub to me is beer, and I have to say the pint we each had was perfectly well kept, and the pint of Lager I had was lovely and cold, just right for that hot summers day. I have since called in on the Wirksworth festival Sunday, and had a drink, which was very welcoming. All in all I recommend this pub, and am looking forward to calling in again.

This is a small, unpretentious, cosy pub, tucked away in the Market Place. The landlady is very friendly. Well worth a visit.

The Blacks Head is a quaint pub with a good atmosphere. We met Joanne who is the land lady who remembered us the following day and even our parties names following our conversation. Joanne was very friendly and chatted to all customers who came in. The guiness is excllent and the real ales were very good. Overall this is a geat place to call in for a pint or even a night out. My wife and I visited this pub earlier today and found it to be a fantastic, traditional place. There are two real ales in barrels on the bar and a further six on handpumps - the beer was excellent. Dave M. - Ashbourne.

The Blacks Arms is a top class countryside town pub!Log fires, a warm welcome and friendliness all about the place. Fantastic range of well served beer and the locals were a very friendly bunch with some real characters and everyone was happy to chat and recommend local points of interest and share a joke.

If you are visiting Wirksworth then I suggest you visit The Black's Head. It is a remarkable pub with excellent beer, especially the Abbott(now served from a jug behind the bar). I live six miles from Wirksworth but gladly make the journey there to enjoy its beer and friendly pub environment. In my family it has become a very special place; we have celebrated many special occasions there, amongst them safe returns from Afghanistan. The current landlady, Joanne, has made The Black's Head an absolute delight. And, if there are any prizes for the loveliest landlady in Britain she would win hands down.

This is not a restaurant as such, although it served Sunday Lunches and has a Pie night each week. What the Black's Head is, is a good old traditional pub that serves excellent beer. It has roaring log fires and a good atmosphere.

Enjoyed ourselves at The Black's Head - good selection of beer, friendly barman, nice atmosphere in a small cosy bar.

This really is a proper old pub which goes back a great many years. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, the beer the best. There is out door seating if you need it in the summer. It is well patronised by locals and visitors from further afield.If you want to try a traditional pub you couldn't do better than the blacks head.
