We visited the Black Lion whilst on holiday and staying in Ystrad Meurig. The pub has a lovely traditional feel and the staff and locals were very welcoming. We ordered pizza from the menu and they were beautifully cooked, tasty and very well presented. Well worth a visit.

A cosy and comfortable traditional pub with excellent food. Staff are friendly and accommodating. They cater for food allergies and vegetarians. (If you phone 24 hours before dining more choice would be available). Only disappointment was the cafetière was weak. Luckily the espresso was excellent. Dogs allowed, biscuits available. An unexpected little gem.

Visited this evening while on holiday locally having been recommended. From the outside, it doesn't look up to much, but inside is quaint and cosy, with a friendly welcome. From the varied menu, we had gammon, mushroom and red pepper stroganoff and pizza (made to order with choice of toppings). All fresh and very tasty. For pudding we had a rhubarb crumble, chocolate brownie and a waffle with peanut butter ice cream and Nutella. Again, all delicious. Helpful waitress offered suggestions for things to do in the local area. We hope to return during our stay for another meal.

Lovely friendly little pub, popular with locals but also very welcoming to visitors. Good above average very tasty food using locally sourced meat such as Welsh lamb and beef. Highlights for us were the Welsh lamb shank and gorgeous shepherds pie with plenty of nice chunks of local meat and the homemade apple crumble. Pizzas also hand done from scratch with toppings made to order which we didn't have but heard the impressed comments from the next table! You can order a 'pizza and a pint' which was very good value. The food is all very good value we thought. There are vegetarian options which also looked good such as mushroom and red pepper stroganoff. Dogs are welcome and they even have a jar of doggy biscuits on the bar. It's a small but cosy pub with a nice feel to it. It can get busy at weekends as there aren't a lot of tables as it's a small village pub, so would strongly suggest booking a table. Reasonable amount of parking space and a nice peaceful garden area which has one 6/8 seater wooden bench on the grass area and another plastic table on the tarmac area. Suggestion for the owners...it would be nice to have another one or two smaller tables or benches as well as the big long one on the grass area. We noticed a separate room off from the main pub which was set up as a children's play area with toys etc and looked like a nice addition. We were visiting the area and staying here so ate here on several nights as it was so good. Breakfast was also very good. One of the best we've ever had. Would highly recommend. They are trying really hard with this pub and deserve to do well.

I visited The Black Lion with 4 other girls on a Tuesday evening and we really enjoyed it! The man behind the bar was very helpful and friendly. I had the lasagne and it was delicious but unfortunately I couldn't finish it because it was such a generous portion which was very reasonably priced!! My friend has the 'Make your own pizza' and nonce of us were expecting it to be that big and she loved it! She couldn't finish it so we took the rest home. The atmosphere in the pub was a nice and friendly. I definitely would visit there again if I was staying in the area or even just passing through.

Very cramped eating area, left waiting at bar for a time as barman doubled as the waiter. When our Sunday lunch arrived meat was cold, left sitting on plate to long in kitchen, bowl of veg very sparing, certainly not enough for two people, and frozen Yorkshire puds!! Decided to have a pudding, as we were both still hungry😮😮 they only had a choice of two, plus ice cream, when I asked why they served only two, which by they way were the same two as most of the other pubs in the area serve, I was told it was for convenience, plus I only had the choice of cream with it. Will not be returning, was a poor show, I like to feel I've had a good Sunday lunch, not go home hungry.

It's a tiny pub with only about 5 or 6 tables to sit at so I'd recommend making a booking on a weekend. I chose the pint and pizza from the menu and can honestly say I've never been full up on pizza but this one was fab. Handmade not frozen and you get to chose your toppings so it's taylor made to you. Nice traditional pub, quite small so was nervous as my younger son has autism amd is sensitive to noise. We arrived just as a part of about 10 had sat down to order food, so barman warned us there may be a delay (we hadn't booked for a Saturday night) Even so the welcome was warm and friendly, the food was quicker than we expected and extremely good, a cut above normal pub fare. Would definitely recommend for an informal bite in friendly surroundings and are thinking of staying next time we go back which is probably the best recommendation I can give.

We had two very enjoyable evenings in the Black Lion, where we were made to feel welcome and everyone was very friendly towards usand owners, especially Tom the barman. The food and beer were both excellent along with the friendly staff. We were staying at the Red Lion for 2 nights on the 2nd and 3rd August 2016 and after travelling for over 250 miles we decided to ask for dinner in the evening, which we were served. There wasn't any tables available, so we had to sit at the bar to eat, we didn't mind that, but I ordered a sirloin steak to be cooked rear, and it came up well done, It said on the menu it was served with chunky hand cut chips peas mushrooms, onion rings and tomatoes. When it was brought up the chips were oil soaked in oil and were frozen chips, there were peas but no tomatoes or mushrooms, My husband asked where they were and the barman said he would speak to the chef, About ten minutes later when we had nearly finished our dinner the barman came and told us they had run out of mushrooms and tomatoes, it would have been nice to have been told when the food was served. My husband had originally ordered the Lamb Shanks, but they had apparently run out of those as well, another group of people tried to order the lamb shanks and were also told they had run out so they ordered burgers instead and without any surprise they had also run out of them too, the barman told them they had some lovely rump steaks (as he was the butcher that supplied the pub), but I have never eaten in a pub where the barman has to tell you what to order, because they have run out of everything. The interior of the Red Lion was very shabby and not inviting, so please don't make the mistake of staying at the Red Lion. BOOK THE BLACK LION AND GET THE STANDARDS YOU EXPECT.

We found ourselves one of the three picknicktables outside, in front of the pub in the sun. We hadn't booked en were told that it should take some time to order tonight. After an hour staff came to take our orders. The food (the homemade beefburger and the vegetarian dish) arrived in another 40 minutes. It looked nice and the taste was very good indeed. Desserts took another 30 minutes to order so al together it took a long time for two rather simple meals with dessert and coffees. A good meal en dessert but you must not be short of time.....

The car park is a mess with a derelict caravan and a couple cars that, I think, were not going far if anywhere, but that is the only criticism. A friendly pub with a new landlord who managed to serve drinks at the bar and food from the kitchen at breakneck pace without tripping over dogs or spread out legs and taking orders at the same time. The food was staple pub food - well cooked and plenty of it. My gammon covered the plate and came with egg, pineapple ring and a mountain of chips. The other customers were pleasant and chatty. On this visit, the food was of the usual good standard but the room was so cold that we almost froze to our seats, which spoilt the whole experience and resulted in a heavy cold 3 days later. As it was mid-week I think they only opened in the late afternoon so the fire might not have been on for long. And as it was not busy, maybe there was no motivation to put some more coals on the fire. So I guess we will postpone our next visit until it is significantly warmer outside.

I ordered the Game Pie, now I might be wrong but I was expecting a pastry base and top, filled with dark game meats in a rich thick brown gravy. What I got was totally different, it was in reality an orange stew in a bowl with what resembled a bath sponge on the top. I lifted the lid to find the orangey/red filling complete with what I think was Kidney beans. It seemed more like a Chilli to me that a Game Pie as I expected. The meat seemed to be white and not much of it and the taste was not what I was expecting at all, for me it was a big let down. The price was also at the top end of the pub food scale.

We found the Black Lion by mistake as we arrived late to the area on a Sunday. The young lady working the bar was really lovely and helpful and managed to get us a table for a gorgeous meal. The Chef done a great job and both my fiance and I left the establishment very content.

We had a lunch in the Black Lion which proved to be hot, tasty and very reasonable in price.I opted for the chicken roast whilst friends had the beef. Plenty of food and veg which catered for 4 adults and two children at the very reasonable price of £45.00.

Nous avons goûter des plats assez épicés mais très bons. Dessert excellent : le sticky toffee pudding à tester absolument ! Ambiance chaleureuse dans cet établissement historique et très typique, fréquenté par des locaux et des randonneurs.

Went into the bar (four of us) . Wanted to order food and drinks. We were told all the available tables were reserved!! Had to eat in the lounge. Went back into the bar later and reserved tables still vacant. Place looks good outside but that's all. Difficult to recommend anything else.

Relatively new owners who now seem to have got a grip on the place and are making an excellent effort to produce good quality food with a speciality in home made enormous pizzas

Had 3 courses and everything was well cooked, but the highlight was the pancake with golden syrup and ice cream to end a very good meal

I've eaten here at least four or five times, never disappointed and this time was no exception. We were cheerfully served up a fine meal and the staff coped with our drunken demands admirably! Fine food, good beer and a pretty good selection of wines and spirits. Worth booking as it can get busy at times. Especially nice in the winter with the fire roaring.

Whilst visiting family in Wales, we were booked in for a Sunday lunch at the Black Lion.Good choice of food on offer, with a selection of meat/fish main courses available. I plumped for the roast sirloin of beef - and it was served up medium - just how i like it. Vegetables were fresh and tasty......and the individual apple crumble dessert.....well that just topped off what i thought was a fabulous overall meal - and at only £11.95 for 2 courses (with a free child's meal along with two full paying adults)...i just wish they were closer to Coventry. I certainly wont moan if i am told we are going here again next time we visit.

Occasionally, chance comes up with an absolute Ace. Looking for somewhere to stay, and eat, in close proximity to Tregaron, good old Google came up with The Black Lion. The room was cosy, clean and comfortable. The bar had a welcoming feel to it, with a woodburner in the hearth casting a warm glow over the place. On the food side, my wife ordered the the Salt & Pepper Squid, which she pronounced 'excellent' (no mean achievement!) I had the home made Vegetable Soup (very tasty and warming on a freezing cold night). For mains we both were tempted by, and succumbed to the Sirloin Cottage Pie. Fabulous. Real chinks of meat in a rich sauce, topped with cheesy (Welsh, of course) Mash. Deffo the best Cottage Pie I have ever tasted. Good selection of cask and keg beers available. I settled on 'Scrooged' from Cottage Brewing, whilst 'her indoors' decided to give the Welsh Whiskey a tasting. If you're travelling in the area, it is well worth a visit.

Friendly bar and glad that we visited. Got there at 5.40pm no menu available but by 6pm all on the board and good to go. Curries were the order of the day we ordered 2 which were ok. I had scampi which was very nice. Beer was good. Nicely presented good portions and cheap. Probably would not re-visit but overall ok

We had a lovely meal at the Black Lion on our final day of a week's holiday. The pub is quite small and cosy, but there is a larger restaurant area at the back for busy days. The starters were delicious and just the right size, an appertiser rather than a meal in their own right. There was no meat curry on the menu the night we visited, but they produced 2 different ones when asked; all the main courses were full of flavour and perfectly cooked. A variety of desserts rounded off the meal, the carrot and apricot pudding was unusual and delightful. Thoroughly recommended.

I was told when I moved to the area that The Black Lion had good food. Despite a change of ownership this year they seem to have maintained the high standards as I've eaten twice here this week, burger then lamb. Both have been outstanding especially for the price. My Dad had the best cottage pie in his life and my mum a delicious curry. Impressed all round and would recommend anyone come here. Staff have been friendly as a bonus and dogs are welcome. Wood burner keeps the place nice and cosy

i stayed here with a friend after a ill thought out mountainbiking trip to ride the raven trail in mid november, due to the fact that the trail was strewn with leaves and we couldnt see where we were going we ended up riding the nearby abergorlech trail. after having endured the conditions until we completed the trail we still had to get through some immense puddles along flooded country roads in to reach pontrafendhydigaid, where our lodgings for the night at the black lion were. it was a long trip but when we reached the black lion all the bad stuff was forgotten. Dominic showed us to our rooms which were very nice and in a separate building behind the pub, and after a quick shower and a coffee, we entered the bar where an open fire was burning, BB king was on the jukebox and a real fine ale was on tap, we ordered our food and took our seats next to the fire to talk about how good the riding had been today, even though about three hours earlier it was the worst mtb trip wed been on. we had a three course meal for tea and the food was great, and very reasonably priced, it was served quite quickly as well the same goes for breakfast the next day, which was served at 8 on the dot which was good cos we were up early so we could hit the syfydrin trail and salvage the weekend.all in all id recommend this place to anyone wholeheartedly, its definitely one of the best places ive stayed on a mountain biking excursion

We went for Sunday lunch. There was Pork loin or Beef to choose from. We chose pork and it was lovely. There were 7 side vegetables, all beautifully cooked also Apple sauce and gravy. For desert there was a large choice. I chose the home made meringues with summer fruits and whipped cream. The meringues were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. They were beautiful as they were not too sweet and the fruit and cream complemented the meringues very well. My husband chose the home made apple flan with ice cream and that was also very much enjoyed. The staff are very welcoming and we will certainly be back. Thank you.

The View certainly has the Wow Factor! From the comfortable, modern vibe to the fabulous hosting, Lorraine with her team made our Sunday lunchtime ( and Friday coffees) an absolute pleasure. It really did feel like the customer’s needs were at the heart of what is offered. The carvery totally reached the spot with a very reasonable price tag. What more could we have hoped for. Thank you x
